However, this is deconstructed with Dadan's mountain bandits and his own family, as he would force them into compliance through intimidation and imprisonment whenever they try to speak up, question or object to his parental methods about dumping Luffy and Ace on them, having no idea how to train them into marines even if they wanted to. It also made his grandchildren fear him more than anything due to the TrainingFromHell he subjected them to during their HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood, giving them something of a distant and tense relationship with him when they reached adulthood. [[spoiler:Tellingly, when he appears on Fullalead, most of Blackbeard's men are ''scared shitless'', and the few who aren't are very quickly chastened when he sets the mood by creating Whitebeard levels of devastation with one Haki-infused blow]].

Note: Although we don't see it, the cover story did happen offscreen, as did all others not seen in the anime, such as Eneru's adventures on the moon. The fact that Jango is in the Marines in the anime is proof that the cover story still happen even without us seeing it.

* AdaptationalJerkass: The anime doesn't adapt his cover story, and as a result Jango doesn't get his PetTheDog moment where he sacrifices his freedom to save Fullbody.

these scenes are always played for laugh, and Luffy is not angry at garp for hating shanks

* UngratefulBastard: He feels nothing but hatred towards Shanks, blaming him for supposedly corrupting Luffy into wanting to become a pirate. He only started to hate Shanks ''after'' he saved Luffy's life, something that his grandson is quick to call him out on, along with [[NeverMyFault pointing out that he already told Garp he wanted to be a pirate long before they even met Shanks.]] Considering the HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood he put Luffy through due to his wishes to enlist Luffy into the Marines, it's no wonder that Luffy feels pissed towards his own grandfather for refusing to give any sort gratitude towards the man responsible for saving his own grandson.
