* BearyFriendly: Zigzagged, as while Bartholomew has not been seen causing harm to the good, honest people of the world, he hasn't exactly acted as a perfect guardian either. Oftentimes, he is less so summoned by someone in need and more by a witch that knows how to specifically summon the Green.
* BigGood: The ultimate example seen thus far in the series. While we're not sure if it's responsible for imprisoning Those Who Sleep Beneath, it acts as its jailer and a guide for the witches of the Green.

[[UpToEleven This gets worse after he sees the Sentinel's true form.]]
* EmbarrassingFirstName: Even the Narrator notes he'd have to knock out his parents for naming him Wallydale. Credit to Glory Ann, it was Waylon's idea in the first place, trying to give his son a prestigious "high falutin'" name.

[[caption-width-right:350:The Dead Queen and Her Cursed Babe (Art By Darcy Rose Morgan)]]

[[EvilCounterpart The other queen in Appalachia]], and much more villainous than her older counterpart. Legend says she was a girl impregnated at a young age before being murdered, and can be seen wandering with her child between the world of life and death. She comes upon a young Caleb Gibson, and bestows a [[KissOfDeath small kiss]] on the young boy, setting in motion the events of season 2...
[[spoiler: And there is much more to her than meets the eye. She is dangerous enough to cause an EnemyMine between both h'aints and the Witches of the Green, and is actually a result of a clash between the Green and Inner Dark.]]
----
* TheBeastmaster: In the finale of season 2, she summons hordes of beasts to stop those trying to renew the seal, [[spoiler: with one such horde obliterating Skint Tom.]]
* BigBad: Of Season 2. She is the cause of Cowboy's uniquely incurable curse, as well as being the saint worshipped by Good Mother Ministries. She is bad enough to cause cooperation between the [[ArchEnemy forever opposed]] forces of the Dark and the Green, and engages in a face off against a group trying to re-seal her in the season finale.
* TheDreaded: Oh yes. The Narrator states both the Inner Dark and the witches of the Green fear her rising the way Church folk fear the goddamned Rapture. [[spoiler: Sealing her is important enough that Bartholomew himself manifests to make sure a crew capable of doing so is assembled.]]
* FinalBoss: Of Season 2, [[spoiler: or rather, the baby that Daughter Dooley tried to save, seeing as its destructive shadow is the force behind the Dead Queen's horrible behavior.]]
* HumanoidAbomination: A pale woman and her child who are dangerous enough to inspire unity between servants of the UltimateEvil and GaiasVengeance? Check.
* InstantDeathRadius: Those who touch her find themselves little better than a pile of dust. Those who she decides to give a kiss don't get off so easy...
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: The Dead Queen is a result of this. [[spoiler: Daughter Dooley fighting for her life to defeat Horned Head in single combat to save the baby he wanted to sacrifice results in the baby's inner shadow clashing with her Green. In turn, they are stuck in symbiosis as the Dead Queen, with the child craving death and destruction while Dooley attempts to restrain it.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to talk about who she REALLY is without getting into extremely spoileriffic territory.
* WhamLine: "So, old friend, how bad was it?" [[spoiler: Said in a distinctive, familiar Irish accent.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: Killed Caleb Gibson and his entire family, cursed him with ResurrectiveImmortality and a curse that would summon a beast similar to Bartholomew should his life be put in danger. So, yeah. [[spoiler: Ironically, the Dead Queen was born out of the fact that Daughter Dooley WouldntHurtAChild, trying to cure the sacrificed child of its Inner Dark. The resulting clash between the shadow and the Green created this abomination]]

[[folder: J.T. Fields/Jack]]
!!Mr. J.T. Fields of Dorchester/Jack

[[TricksterGod A trickster as old as Appalachia itself]] who likes making deals with folks down on their luck, said deals often turning out to have more to them than meets the eye.
----
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Seems to operate on this, being motivated purely in his interactions by if something benefits him or is "profitable."
* BullyingADragon: Some folks he scammed their land out of show up looking to pick a fight with him. He invokes [[DealWithTheDevil an old deal their Papa made with him long ago to get their crops growing again.]] [[OhCrap They promptly go on their merry way.]]
* TheChessmaster: Seems to be in some sort of LongGame against B&L, if not the Inner Dark on the whole.
* CompositeCharacter: A combination of the Jack that jumped over the Candlestick and climbed into the sky and slayed the Giant. Naturally, his chores for Tommy Fields in paying off his debt to him all invoke different parts of both legends.
* DealWithTheDevil: Loves to strike these with folks down on their luck, turning them into pawns that will either perform chores for or be used as spies. [[spoiler: Even spying on one as dangerous as Nathaniel Locke himself.]]
* EvenEvilHasItsStandards: Is a TricksterGod tried and true, possibly even older than the Inner Dark itself but is always on edge and horrified of them, fleeing to the other side of the world when they were sealed and nearly screaming for the first time ever after reading Horned Head's mind. When his agent, Tommy, is forced into working for a member of the Lockes, he grows apprehensive and openly threatens the boy so his deal with the Lockes will be fulfilled, clearly indicating horror and apprehension on his part.
* HorrifyingTheHorror: Abhors the Inner Dark, but is stuck in their service for most of Build Mama A Coffin after an encounter with Horned Head hundreds of years ago after mistakenly thinking he was tricking some simple deer.
* PublicDomainCharacter: Is said to be the same Jack who jumped over the candle stick AND the Jack from {{Literature/Jack and the Beanstalk}}.
* RefusalOfTheCall: Was called upon by the [[BigGood the Light that sealed the Old Things]] to be the warden of their prison, but Jack couldn't be bothered with the responsibility and promptly fled to the other side of the world until the mountains of Appalachia were done forming.
* TimeAbyss: Is noted to be as old as Appalachia.

[[folder: The Boy]]
!!The Boy
A Free Agent who manifests as a boy with a man's voice, although the age of the form seems to fluctuate. Acts as a spirit of vengeance for all the little boys killed in the name of progress.
----
* AllegoricalCharacter: Is one for child labor and exploitation, acting as punishment that many employers of that time would not receive today.
* CreepyChild: A child with the voice of a man out to punish the sinful.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Actually, yes. He only punishes those cruel enough to exploit children to the point of their deaths. While he may be driven by rage and hate, no innocents actually suffer by his hand. This alone gives him a better track record than pretty much every supernatural character not associated with the Green.
* VengefulGhost: Punishes all those who exploit and hurt children.
* VocalDissonance: Noted when he speaks in the voice of a full grown man.
[[/folder]]

!Normal Folks
[[folder: As A Whole]]
[[AffectionateNickname The Family.]] The normal folk of Appalachia who, on the whole, are just trying to do their best with what they've got. It just so happens that they're smack dab in the middle of a CosmicHorrorStory, and can hardly ever catch a break.
----
* DescentIntoAddiction: [[AuthorAvatar The Narrator]] implies that all Appalachians are aware of the AwfulTruth, and deal with the pain of this knowledge with medication.
* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: Usually the case unless they're saved by Witches of the Green. Expected, considering they're normal people who find themselves fighting against [[EldritchAbomination eldritch horrors.]]
* FateWorseThanDeath: Those whose dying bodies are puppeted by the Things are said to find no peace in death.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: So people know that the establishment is controlled by a GodOfEvil. They know their employers are some variation of HumanoidAbomination even BEFORE they see [[YouHaveFailedMe to those who failed them.]] They know those who control the Appalachian region are evil. So what do they do? Does someone [[RebelLeader lead a fierce resistance against them?]] Do they revolt en masse and get the word out, leading to a BrokenMasquerade? [[ThisLoserIsYou Nope.]] They go to work day after day, collect their paychecks, and hope that if they lick the boots of their masters long enough, then [[HumansAreBastards they'll get promoted]] (although the viewers know this, at best, leads to abominations like the Hollowed Men). They slowly succumb to addiction outside of work, haunted by the things they've done in the name of pay, but they're unwilling to act to change it, lest their livelihoods be put on the line.
** That being said, there are occasional moments where either [[ChildrenAreInnocent a child's sense of justice]] or [[PapaWolf parental]] [[MamaBear instincts]] come in and allow humans to stand up to the Eldritch Horrors before them and try their best to [[HumansAreSpecial make a difference.]]
* ThisLoserIsYou: Generally, when faced with the evils of the Things, the normal folk of Appalachia cave and make a deal, or end up horribly, horribly scarred from the experience.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Cletus Garvin]]
A pastor in Barlow, Kentucky who made a DealWithTheDevil to prolong his own life. In exchange the [[HearingVoices Voices From the Mines]] would get invocation and sacrifice.
----
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of a SinisterMinister in a CosmicHorrorStory. Yes, he leads a ReligionOfEvil that makes sacrifices to the Old Gods of Appalachia in exchange for extended life. Yes, he bares some responsibility for the Old Number 7 Disaster. Yes, he's implied to be a racist, too. But his deal with the Things came from a place of wanting his family to be taken care of, and the devolution into a CorruptChurch comes from a slow perversion of their Christian values out of necessity moreso than any divine vision.
* DirtyCoward: Deep down implied to be this, being unwilling to die and being willing to sacrifice the lives of the scabs working Old Number 7 to do so.
* PapaWolf: For all his character flaws, he is redeemed by this. Seeing his sons injured and killed by Old Number 7 leads to a furious invocation on his part that ends in failure. It leads to him turning away from the Things, and to his death.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Seemingly. He finally turns away from the Things after they refuse to save his sons. Their response? Brutally kill and possess his entire family, before doing away with him.
* SinisterMinister: Sort of. The narration goes out of its way to show his line of thinking before he makes a deal with the Things, and he tries his best to stay true to his Christian values even as he's [[OfferingsToTheGods sacrificing animals to them.]] However, it's still implied he bares some responsibility for the Old Number 7 Disaster with his corruption of the church.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: The Things got what they wanted out of Old Number 7, and brutally slaughtered him and his entire family afterwards.

[[folder: Caleb Gibson/Cowboy Absher]]
A small boy who has an unfortunate encounter with [[WalkingWasteland the Dead Queen]], leading to the loss of his entire family. He is later found by Floyd Absher and taken in, adopting the name Cowboy Absher. After a chance encounter with a h'aint in the woods, he becomes acquainted with the Walker Family.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: The Springtime In Boggs Holler trilogy acts as this, detailing efforts to finally rid him of his curse.
* BotanicalAbomination: Not him, [[spoiler: but his curse is represented as this. Glory Anne has to manually undo the vines constraining him to the Dead Queens tree, and while she can't undo all of them, she hopes that he will one day be strong enough to undo them himself.]]
* CursedWithAwesome: In some aspects. He can see the true nature of Things on the fly, such as the White clan or the Thing That Was Not Daddy, and if they bother to even try to strike him a corruption of the Green manifests and tears them apart. If he's killed, he'll just pop up a couple of hours later no worse for wear. However...
** BlessedWithSuck: Ultimately, his curse is this. He can see the death of everything he turns his eye to, even his loved ones, cannot digest any food, and his corrupted guardian will kill everyone around it that's not him. This all plays into his nature as [[TheBait a trap set by the Dead Queen,]] as any h'aints that are seen through by a young boy will take the opportunity to try to strike and kill him and be obliterated, but if its triggered when there's no h'aints around, it'll [[KillTheOnesYouLove kill anyone else around him.]]
** Subverted after his [[spoiler: visit with Glory Anne Boggs. She is able to undo the constriction on his ability to eat and take away his ability to see the deaths of those around him. It seems like he may still have his ResurrectiveImmortality for the time being, but Glory Anne hopes that someday his strength will grow enough where he can break the bonds on his own.]]
* TheCutie: Everyone who meets Cowboy seems to instantly fall in love with him and want to protect him at all costs. Even Glory Anne Boggs, who is noted to be somewhat cold at that phase in her life and weary of all those who have the stench of the Dark on them, eventually caves in and admits she'd do anything to protect him, saying he's "just a baby."
* NiceGuy: Is this to everyone he meets, being soft spoken and shy but all around sweet. The nastiest he's ever gotten is using his forbidden knowledge powers to tell a relentless bully that his Daddy died a coward. [[BigBrotherInstinct Out of a desire to protect Floyd from the bully.]]
* ResurrectiveImmortality: Is cursed with this by a kiss from the Dead Queen, who wishes to use the corrupted Green within him to cause mass death and destruction.
* TheseAreThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow: Another aspect of his curse. He can see the death of every non-supernatural being he turns his eye to. It also makes him good at digging up a DarkSecret or two on the fly.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: His visit with the Dead Queen leads to the Walkers getting involved with her resealing, leading directly to the events of the season 2 finale. Furthermore [[spoiler: Glory Anne Boggs trying to undo his curse leads to her attaining some thorns from the Dead Queen's tree, leading up to the events of Build Mama a Coffin.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Vera Blevins]]
A HookerWithAHeartOfGold, daughter of Melvin Blevins, whose profession leads her into a fateful confrontation with the Inner Dark. This all leads to an [[NoodleIncident incident with a Man From the Railroad and the local magistrate.]]
----
* BadassNormal: Manages to escape an AnimalisticAbomination who's very heavily implied to be a [[KnightOfCerebus VIP from B&L]], and evade the Hollowed Men long enough to make it to [[BadassFamily the Walker Sisters and Pleasant Evenings.]]
** However this is deconstructed slightly, in that her normalcy means she lacks proper context for many of the supernatural goings-on in Appalachia. [[spoiler: Meaning she doesn't realize the pocket watch her enemies are after is actually an ArtifactOfDoom.
* BreakTheCutie: And that's an {{Understatement}}. She's reassigned to a secret brothel where the rich clients are allowed to do [[AdultFear anything]] to them, before being sentenced to a session with one. She walks in and sees a VIP (described as a horrible pig man) cuddling with the [[IAmAHumanitarian half eaten remains of her friend.]] After escaping with a [[ArtifactOfDoom pocket watch]] as compensation, she escapes just in the nick of time from the Hollowed Men sent after her, only for them to meet [[KnightOfCerebus the Railroad Man]] and get much more competent as a result. She takes refuge at Pleasant Evenings only for her captors to come calling for her and [[spoiler: massacre the young men of the town by turning them into mindless slaves and using them as a HumanShield to break the Walkers wards.]] She is so thoroughly broken by all these events that she begs for her life before her killer, only for the ArtifactOfDoom to grant her a CruelAndUnusualDeath. One can only hope in the afterlife she found some peace, although given the track record for those who mess with the Things, even this is doubtful.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Is killed by the pocket watch she steals from the VIP, being aged to death in mere moments. The Hollowed Man even says that the pocket watch bestows a death far worse than any he could hope to. What's worse, [[spoiler: it's mere moments before her daddy shows up to save her.]]
* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: Absolutely. She took up TheOldestProfession to make her own way in Appalachia so she doesn't have to be a burden on her family, but from all accounts seems like a NiceGirl who doesn't want those taking refuge at Pleasant Evenings to die on her account.
* TheLostLenore: A daughter variant to her father, Melvin, even before her death. He had the reassurance of knowing his other daughter was married off to a loving husband, while Vera went into TheOldestProfession. Her death, moments before he arrived to save her, motivates him to help others down on their luck like [[ResurrectiveImmortality Cowboy]] or [[TragicVillain the Wolf Sisters.]]
* ShrinkingViolet: After her encounter with [[IAmAHumanitarian the VIP]], she becomes this, terrified for her life constantly. This is entirely justified, considering the power and influence of B&L. However, the thing that ultimately dooms her is choosing to use the railroad, catching the attention of a certain entity who concerns itself with the goings on of the Railroad.
* TooDumbToLive: Not too dumb, per say. But she was uninformed and naive, touching the pocket watch continuously while trying to beg for her life against a Hollowed Man even once it begins to age her to death. She becomes hysterical in her begging when the Hollowed Man refuses to touch the watch, giving it time to age her into dust.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Frank Tilley]]
An acoholic, abrasive {{Jerkass}} of a man who is found horribly murdered one night, setting suspicions on his poor wife.
----
* AssholeVictim: No one's particularly upset by his death, regardless of how horrible it was. Furthermore, the sheriff is implied to give up all investigation into the murder due to the fact that there is a MASSIVE number of people who would want him dead.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Is brutally murdered by [[WalkingWasteland the Dead Queen]] [[spoiler: after his wife prays for his demise with a church of her worshippers.]] His head is found completely detached from his body, or what's left of it. [[AssholeVictim No one really cares.]]
* DomesticAbuse: Gave out a metric crapton of it to his poor small wife, to the point where people at church openly gawked at whatever bruises and injuries she may be sporting that week.

[[caption-width-right:350:''The oldest company to extract minerals from these mountains...'']]
One of the earliest companies to ever extract minerals from the mountains of Appalachia, and resident EvilInc. Many of the monsters of the show associated with the railroad or exploitation of the poor find themselves working for B&L.
----
* TheBadGuyWins: Whenever the higher ups get involved, usually this is the case. The Barrow family has yet to be personally defeated by any of the protagonists t hat have had the misfortune of crossing them. Even those under them know that you are best kept alive if off of the higher ups' radar.
* TheBeautifulElite: Both heirs to the company, Polly Barrow and Nathaniel Locke, are noted to be beautiful. This doesn't stop them from being [[BeautyIsBad horrible, horrible people.]]
* EvilCounterpart: Can be considered this for the Walker Family, as a BadassFamily on the side of the Inner Dark. Furthermore, while the Barrow and Locke families live wealthy and comfortable lives as AristocratsAreEvil and exploit the working class, the Walkers have found their house put in danger and under siege time and time again but always put it on the line to help those in need.
* EvilInc: An exploitative company that is willing to destroy an entire town for threatening to unionize? Check. Run by a family of [[EldritchAbomination eldritch horrors]]? Check. [[EvilIsPetty Makes employees work unpaid overtime?]] Check.
* GreaterScopeVillain: A lesser example than Those Who Sleep Beneath, considering their allegiance to the Inner Dark, but still there. They're behind many of the different monsters that appear on the show, particularly [[TheHeartless the Hollow Men]], and their operations are so vast that they cause [[TheSpook the Railroad Man]] to enter the story. Further still, they're implied to have some connection to the cause of the Old Number 7 Disaster that dominates season 1. However their influence is so vast and wide that the protagonists often only encounter field agents before meeting a [[DownerEnding horrible end.]]
** In a bit more of a direct example, when B&L is the main obstacle of the story, there will be some mention of [[TheGhost the directors of the company]], who are noted to be [[YouHaveFailedMe very unpleasant]] when their agents don't do as they're told.
* KnightOfCerebus: When a member of the Barrow Family shows up, the situation is going to end messily and with as many casualties as possible. "Pretty" Polly Barrow's appearance in the Salt the Earth special ends the episode putting an entire town in danger, in a situation that would cause even more casualties than Old Number 7.
** Another example of this can be seen in the Halloween special episode Bumper Crop, wherein a Barrow is called in to deal with a strain of invasive gourds by the protagonist. [[spoiler: While it's not seen what happens to her, the protagonist's house is completely charred and overrun with pumpkins, leading to a DownerEnding.]]

[[folder: E.P. Barrow]]
!!Elias Pontius Barrow

Elias Pontius Barrow is the head of Barrow Mineral Resources, and a ruthless tyrant over both his family and company. He extracts money from the mountains and worships the Dark fervently so that his family may find greater fortunes.
----
* AbusiveParents: Almost certainly guaranteed, given his kids grew into monsters themselves.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: By the time of Season 3 it’s unclear how much of a human he is anymore, considering what we hear every time he [[HellIsThatNoise “speaks”]]
* AmbiguousSituation: Is he a Deep Thing? Or just a man that is ''very'' devoted to the Thing he serves? On one hand, he's the only potential Deep Thing that's been shown to actually be capable of breeding, usually only associated with those who serve the Dark and not those actually of it. That being said, he seems to have way too much power for a Middle or Low Thing, actually being powerful enough to be a rival to Horned Head as the most powerful Thing on the show. And then there's the fact that he actually commands Ignatius Combs, supposedly one of the most powerful of the Deep Things...
* BigBad: Of Barrow Mineral Resources, being the head of the ruling family. [[spoiler: Is also a contender for the title of the show as a whole, being behind all the pain and suffering that Barrow and Locke has caused thus far.]]
* EvilOldFolks: Grew into quite an old bastard by the time of his death, and worship of the Inner Dark puts him firmly in this category.
* HumanoidAbomination: Oh, yes. He may appear human, but aside from the fact that he currently resides in a coffin barking orders in a BrownNote language, he's noted to have many more progeny aside from his acknowledged sons and daughter, [[spoiler: with them not being human enough to exist in the world of men.]]
* {{Narcissist}}: Is definitely this, given he viewed everyone as beneath him and expected them to act as such. Even his favored daughter, Polly, is described more as an achievement than someone he's actually proud of.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Resides in his manor in Barrow while his spawn handle the running of the company.
* OverarchingVillain: Competes with Horned Head for the title, being behind the most personal and repulsive sufferings in the show.
* SealedEvilInACan: Sort of. He currently resides in a black coffin suspended in midair by chains within a massive hole he created in the heart of his manor. It should be noted this was all his choice as part of some ritual to gain power at the cost of his remaining humanity.
* TrulySingleParent: [[spoiler: Not that he didn't create any kids with anyone else, unfortunately, but Polly in particular is a creation of his and his alone.]]

* ADayInTheLimelight: Set to be one of the main focuses of Season 3, "As Above, So Below."
* BigBadDuumvirate: Seems to be poised to form this with Nathaniel Locke for B&L, being the two heirs apparent to the company. That is, unless their forefathers stay in the picture.
* DaddysGirl: Very much, being the sole human presenting daughter of E.P., although seeing as her father is [[TrulySingleParent her only parent,]] she didn't have much choice. He still blatantly dotes on and favors her in his own horrible ways, giving her cruises and new cars at some points and imparting eldritch knowledge on her at others.
* TheDragon: To her father, E.P. Barrow.
* DragonAscendant: [[spoiler: After her father's death, she's set to be the heir to his company. However, this is a deliberate case of ExactWords, as while E.P. is sealed in a coffin, he's still very clearly in charge, making this an averted trope.]]
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: A member of TheBeautifulElite to be sure, but it doesn't stop her from damning an entire town to the mercy of a breaking, toxic dam.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Acts kind and gentile enough, but it quickly becomes apparent that it's just an act, and all she cares about is approval and reward from her father.
* HumanoidAbomination: Her arm is described as stretching and contorting, striking a dam with enough power to leave it on the verge of breaking. [[CruelMercy Giving her employee just enough time to try and save his family before it breaks.]]
* MindRape: Suffers this from her father, since she was born so close to human that any knowledge he imparts is going to hurt, a lot. [[spoiler: Although this was specifically so she would be able to control the Weapon to combat rising unions.]]
* SpoiledBrat: Fundamentally this, behind the more eldritch aspects of her creation and life. She does all the awful things she does out of hope for rewards from her father. Not of eldritch knowledge or power, but of things like a new car, or a cruise.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Invokes this on an entire town. Why? [[EvilIsPetty Attempting to unionize.]]

What his fiance hears when she reads his mind is foul enough that she is driven to murder almost immediately after, but what she sees as she seemingly ends his life is a pleading, pretty as ever face. Tommy Fields later notes the same thing, saying he seems normal enough but feeling deep down that he's not human.
* MaritalRapeLicense: If what his fiance found from looking into his mind was any indication, he was going to get his child whether she wanted it or not.
* PrettyBoy: Is noted to be this. [[spoiler: Which makes the foulness dwelling in his mind all the more striking.]]
* ResurrectiveImmortality: Is killed by his fiance in a blind panic after she reads his horrible mind. Or, rather, it seems that way. [[spoiler: The Grey Lady that blackmails her after notes that his family is far too protected to be killed by such simple means.]]

* AlmightyJanitor: Seems to be this in the present, having been the eldest of the Deep Things and one of the, if not THE, most powerful once, but now acts as naught but an errand boy for B&L. [[spoiler: Not that any of this saves Carol Anne.]]
* ArcVillain: Can be considered this for the Barlo, Kentucky portion of the story that deals with the Avery family, considering he purchases the land out from under them after Pinky's death and is responsible for both [[spoiler: Carol Anne's death]] and the Hounds that pursue Sarah Avery for the first two episodes.
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: Was the first among the Deep Things and formerly much more powerful, where it's doubtful even Horned Head could have held a candle to him. Now he works as a representative for B&L. While their relationship is unclear, no one as high ranking as the Barrow family would be sent to [[spoiler: simply kill two members of the Walker clan.]] Furthermore, while fellow Deep Thing Horned Head was able to survive a defeat for over a century, slowly returning to power, we never see the Swarm do much of anything but [[spoiler: kill Carol Anne and sick his Hounds on her young daughter,]] and the former act completely puts him out of commission.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: [[spoiler: He doesn't accomplish a lot before Carol Anne's magic mulches him and his bugs, but his attack on the Avery house causes Sarah to open herself to the Green, not to mention setting the stage for the Walker Sisters to enter the story proper.]]
* TheSwarm: His title, and it's heavily implied that he's a literal case as his skin is described as constantly writhing, with millions of insects beneath. However, we don't see him make much use of this before the bugs making him up are turned to mulch.
* StarterVillain: From an episode standpoint, shares this with his Hounds. He is the highest ranking Deep Thing we see in the Barlo, Kentucky portion of the story, but is killed off before he can do more than [[spoiler: kill Carol Anne]], and seems too weak to have survived the aftershocks.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: [[spoiler: We don't see him do too much besides killing Carol Anne before her Green magic seemingly annihilates him.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Hollowed Men]]
Men who work for B&L, acting as field agents when someone needs to be silenced or their assets need to be protected.
----
* BodyguardingABadass: They act as personal bodyguards for the Barrow family, who prove time and time again they [[HumanoidAbomination are plenty dangerous on their own.]]
* EliteMooks: Act as this for B&L, being more effective and having more agency than, say, [[SlaveMooks the Hounds]]. However, they're still weak enough to be destroyed by a Green witch's ward [[spoiler: as seen during the assault on Pleasant Evenings.]]
* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler: When Vera starts offering the ArtifactOfDoom to one of them at Pleasant Evenings, the Hollowed Man is horrified and promises a death from him would be more merciful.]] It doesn't end up helping her, though.
* TheHeartless: Described as having their human selves scooped out of them by the power that reforged them into what they are now.
* HorrifyingTheHorror: The two Hollowed Men sent after Vera Blevins are approached by a certain Man from the Railroad, who asks them to really look into his soul if they doubt his intentions. What they see completely cows them into submission to the Railroad Man's goals.
** The ones that work for Polly Barrow, previously domineering and smug, are seen as pitiful and afraid in her presence. [[NightmareFuelStationAttendant They have good reason for this.]]
* HumanoidAbomination: They all seem on the surface like regular, if B&L higher up, men. This changes the moment they're sent on the chase.
* {{Jerkass}}: Every.Single.One of them. It doesn't matter how pleasant they try to be, they will always cave into their primal urges as little more than wrathful beasts.
* OneWingedAngel: They can stretch and distort into more monstrous forms, although this happens more often when they're far away from their masters at B&L and they lose control over themselves, causing this to overlap with ClippedWingAngel.

!Outside Forces/Free Agents
[[folder: As A Whole]]
Supernatural forces existing outside of the Green or the Inner Dark. It is not known if they're older than either or simply came into being along the way.
----
* OutsideContextProblem: Very much so, although most seem to be less proactive than the Inner Dark and thus less troubling. Essentially, they seem to be the FairFolk or some sort of AnthropomorphicPersonification of human nature more than an EldritchAbomination like the Inner Dark, or GaiasVengeance like the Green.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: The Railroad Man]]
->'''Voiced By:''' [[{{UsefulNotes/YuriLowenthal}} Yuri Lowenthal]]
The most malevolent of the Free Agents seen thus far. Manifests as a man with a salt and pepper beard and charcoal grey suit. Seems to be the personification of man's progress, with all the bloodshed and sacrifice that comes with it.
----
* ArcVillain: Of the Walker Sisters arc in season 2, coming to their home to pursue Vera Blevins on behalf of the Hollowed Men and laying siege to Pleasant Evenings.
* TheBeastmaster: Becomes this in the climax of his arc, [[spoiler: using a card he handed out to the poor of the town under the promise of a work opportunity and turning them all into some variant of Humanoid Abomination,]] so he can use their bloodshed to enter the Walker Property.
* BigBadDuumvirate: Teams up with the Hollowed Men to pursue Vera Blevins during the Walker Sisters arc in season 2, although he's clearly the dominant member between the three of them, and far more dangerous.
* CatchPhrase: "Ever onward, ever forward."
* DealWiththeDevil: Seems to operate on this, saving a magistrate's life with the condition that he will owe him later, only to [[spoiler: rip his throat out when he notices the magistrate can't stomach the carnage he brings.]]
* HorrifyingTheHorror: Does this to the Hollowed Men, one of only two characters to do so. This is no small feet, considering the only other creature capable of doing so is the Dead Queen, whose rising causes an EnemyMine situation between the Green and Dark.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: He engages in some rather nasty SlutShaming over the Walker sisters' and mother's history as prostitutes.
* PyrrhicVillainy: Pleasant Evenings is mostly destroyed and the surrounding town devastated. The Railroad Man retrieves the pocket watch he set out for, but he is badly wounded, perhaps even crippled by the Walkers and banished from their place of power with a horrific scream of pain and ra
* RailroadBaron: Is this trope taken to the extreme, being a personification of the worst aspects of the railroad and the progress it seeks. He applauds the local magistrate's handling of men who died while building a tunnel, stating with no small satisfaction [[NightmareFetishist how many men will be dead by the operation's end.]]
* SlashedThroat: His throat is slit by Ellie Walker to sever him from Pleasant Evenings and banish him.
* TheSpook: Pops out of nowhere with no indication as to where he came from or what he truly wants. All that we really find out is that he likes making deals, and wants the [[ArtifactOfDoom fancy watch that Vera Blevins stole from a monster of the Inner Dark]].
* SurroundedByIdiots: He has a very low opinion of the Hollowed Men and the other haints he brings with him, particularly when Mr. White cannot understand a simple metaphor.
* VerbalTic: Occasionally engages in one of these, mmmyesssssss?
* WickedCultured: He's knowledgable, intelligent and extremely eloquent while exuding an aura of pure, cruel menace.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: When judge Jerry Brotherton is no further use, he rips out the man's throat as a blood sacrifice.

[[folder:The Dead Queen]]
!!The Dead Queen/The Other Queen/[[spoiler:The Daughter Dooley]]

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_20220401_171522_patreon.jpg]]

[[/folder]]

[[/folder]]
