Both were born Quirkless and were shunned by their peers as a result and were given Quirks later in life to achieve their dreams, with said Quirks giving causing harm to their bodies if used wrong. But while Midoriya received his Quirk from [[BigGood All Might]], Aoyama received his from [[BigBad All For One]]. Midoriya's mother was initially unaware of One For All's nature and how he received it, while Aoyama's parents took him to All For One in the hope he would give their son a Quirk. Additionally, All Might and those in the know about One For All did their best to nurture Midoriya's newfound power, with the negative repercussions being due to details outside of their knowledge or control, or due to Midoriya's own self-destructive tendencies. Aoyama's Quirk came with the caveat of All For One having leverage over him, forcing him to committ evil acts that would weigh heavily on his conscience.]]

* IWantToBeARealMan: A major part of his characterization is his pursuit of manliness. He idolizes the strong and chivalrous Crimson Riot, describes his likes and dislikes as "manly" and "unmanly", and has masculine interests (such as working out). This is partially driven by his own insecurity.
