* MultiEthnicName: Technically, Matthaeus is the German spelling of Matthias (as Owen's nickname is "Teis" instead of the more usual "Matt").

* ExpositionOfImmortality: Artio babysat him "when bears were still in Ireland" (the last Ice Age), and he mentions that he didn't always have a name.

Lucy also recounts that he threatened one of Alima's old boyfriends by playing up his carpenter job, its heavy lifting, and its dangerous tools.

* AdultFear: He and his wife got kidnapped, he was cursed while they were escaping, and their grieving daughter is now being targeted by the same man.
** In flashbacks, Ned's at work when he gets a call from his hysterical brother Jordan, and finds out that his sister-in-law's been murdered.

* OppositesAttract / TrueLoveIsExceptional: He's a snarky trickster who's bitter and traumatized due to an ''extreme'' event of homophobia. His long-distance boyfriend Matthaeus is a talkative and clumsy jeweler.

* RunningGag: His friends constantly call him stupid, even though he shows no sign of it. Apparently, he shorted out his laptop when he was sixteen.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: One of his friends was nearly killed for being gay five years ago. Two years later, his parents died and left him to take care of Logan. Owen states that Mal hasn't told anyone the whole story.

* DamselInDistress: Initially. Upgrades to ActionSurvivor as she heeds advice and acts pretty reasonably.
