'''''A Note''''': CharacterDerailment is ''not'' negative CharacterDevelopment. It is not a character acting in a way you don't like, or acting illogically, or even being subjected to CharacterExaggeration or {{Flanderization}}. It is a character acting completely and utterly against they're own previous characterization, to the point where it approaches a WallBanger. Please consider this before adding examples of it to this page (and when you do, ''explain'' how it is CharacterDerailment so that it can be argued against or agreed with); if you are not sure, kindly post it under Discussion.

!Crew of the Minerva
!!Shinn Asuka
--> "Do you people want another war?"

The show's protagonist (at least to begin with). During the events of the first Bloody Valentine War, he lost the rest of his family while attempting to evacuate from the Orb Union when it became a warzone. Since then, he has carried a hatred for Orb in general and the Athha family (whom he views as responsible for dragging the country into the war) in particular. After the war, he migrated to the [=PLANTs=] and was accepted as a ZAFT Redcoat. He frequently clashes with Athrun, and [[spoiler: mid-way through the show, becomes one of the primary antagonists, opposite Athrun and Kira. He remains more or less sympathetic, and is shown to have [[HeelFaceTurn Heel Face Turned]] post-war]].

A skilled Mobile Suit pilot, he is initially the pilot of the Impulse, and later receives a MidSeasonUpgrade to the [[TitleDrop Destiny]] Gundam.

* [[spoiler: AntiVillain]]: One of the best examples out there. No one does [[spoiler: all the wrong things for all the right reasons]] quite like Shinn.
* BackToBackBadasses: With [[ZetaGundam Kamille]] in AnotherCenturysEpisode: R, alongside Amuro and Kira, and Quattro and Athrun.
* BadassAngster: He can be a {{Wangst}}-ty little jerk. He's also one of the best pilots in the series, and can even go after Kira and Athrun on a relatively even footing.
* Main/ByronicHero (his intentions are good, but they are damaged by the fact that he cannot let go of his hatred towards Orb and the Earth Forces, or trust anyone outside his immediate circle of friends)
** Main/HeroWithAnFInGood (Specifically this type. He is ''not'' without flaws, but he disobeys orders only to protect people, [[spoiler: almost]] verbally manages a CooldownHug ''repeatedly'' for Stella, and accepts Kira's offer to continue defending peace.)
*** Becomes an [[spoiler: AntiVillain after the perspective flip, doing all the wrong things for all the right reasons]].
* BlackAndWhiteMorality: Shinn's biggest problem is his inability to see ''anything'' in shades of grey. His friends are right, everyone else is wrong, [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope and away we go]].
* TheBerserker: Shinn's anger is his driving motivation. Throw in a love of close-combat, a huge ego, and little respect for his own safety, and Athrun and Kira have a serious problem on their hands.
* TheBrute: Ever heard of subtlety, Shinn? No? I didn't really think so. He's more sympathetic than most, but Shinn meets most of the requirements for TheBrute with ease: First into a fight? Check. Limited sense of tactics? Check. Manipulated by [[spoiler: TheDragon and the BigBad?]] Check. Incredibley stupid...? Okay no, he's [[GeniusBruiser far from dumb]], but his anger and [[BlackAndWhiteMorality inability to see shades of grey]] have a similar effect on him.
** Before the perspective flip, you could argue that he was both TheLancer and TheBigGuy to Athrun's TheHero, even though Shinn is technically the "hero" of the series.
* Main/CatchPhrase (''Anta wa ore ga utsunda! Kyou! Koko de!'', translated as, ''I'm defeating you! Here! Today!'', due to its appearance in a number of games, is quickly becoming Shinn's de-facto catchphrase.)
** Other possible candidates include ''Mata sensou ga shitai no ka, antatachi wa?!''/''Do you guys want another war?!'' and ''Kona tokoro de...kona tokoro de ore wa...!''/''Not here...Not in a place like this...!'', both of which show up almost as much as the above.
* Main/ChaoticGood: Arguably becomes ChaoticNeutral after TheReveal. He remains fully convinced that he's the former though.
* Main/CharacterDevelopment: Gets the most of any character, all of it negative. In the beginning, Shinn is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold, and a relatively sympathetic character who has difficulty controlling his anger, and serious problems with depression. As the series' progresses his personality conflict with Athrun, war-trauma, stress from his relationship with Stella, and inability to see things in shades of grey take a [[SanitySlippage steady toll on his sanity]], leading him to rely more and more on [[TheBerserker Seed Mode]] in order to be effective. He becomes increasingly convinced of his own self-righteousness, even as he grows steadily more unstable, and comes to rely on [[ManipulativeBastard Rey]] to make sense of the war for him. [[spoiler: Stella's death]] more or less sends him over the edge, leaving him incredibley vulnerable emotionally, and more susceptible to Rey and the Chairman than ever. Then [[spoiler: Athrun defects]], Shinn loses his SympatheticPOV, and the audience starts seeing him the way the other side does: as an [[AntiVillain Anti-Villainous]] JerkassWoobie.
* Main/DeadLittleSister (his whole motivation is his deceased sister Mayu. Sadly, this is all many fans remember about him)
* DecoyProtagonist: Which is probably what split the fanbase as badly as it did.
** Mainly within the main show show. In most video games, he is almost always gets the most focus of Destiny's story. With the exceptions of Super Robot Wars Scramble Commander the 2nd, SuperRobotWarsK, and (probably) [[GundamVsSeries Gundam Extreme Vs]].
* Main/{{Expy}} (is very similar to [[ZetaGundam Kamille Bidan]])
** In terms of personality? Yes. But there's also a number of parallels between Shinn and [[{{Gundam0083}} Kou Uraki]]. Both start out as test pilots for their respective side, both of them had new Gundams stolen right out from under them, and both end up failing to completely stop a colony drop. The Impulse also has more in common on a technical term (using a core block system similar to the RX-78) with the GP-01 than the Mk. II.
* {{Foil}}: Shows how Kira and especially Athrun might have turned out if they'd continued to blindly follow orders and never question their own sides' moral superiority.
* GeniusBruiser: Or at least the Gundam equivalent of it. Shinn's not stupid, but he tends to eschew tactics in favour of brute force, only utilising strategy when the situation absolutley demands it.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff (in a contrast to Kira, he is better received on the other side of the Pacific. Still a ReplacementScrappy for many, but still gets at least a little sympathy. SuperRobotWars helped a lot)
** YourMileageMayVary: There's a sizeable portion of the fanbase that wants him dead, and many others who want him to grow up. When you get down to it, the Seed Destiny fanbase is more or less split between Shinn-backers, and those of us who prefer the Old Guard of Kira, Lacus and Athrun.
* [[spoiler:HeelFaceTurn (not that he was ever evil at all, but since he joined what apparently established "good guys" at the very end, I guess he and Luna could be be last second examples.)]]
* Main/HeroesWantRedheads (if you don't believe Luna to be a rebound...)
* HotBlooded
* Main/TheFaceless (In the Special Edition, although he is present in a few scenes early on, his face is hidden until a few seconds before the Impulse forms for the first time.)
* Main/JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Approaches being a full-fledged {{Jerkass}} as the series progresses, especially after [[spoiler: poor Stellar's death]])
** He's probably best described as a JerkassWoobie.
* Main/KenichiSuzumura
** TalkingToHimself (with [[{{Gravion}} Eiji Shigure]] in SuperRobotWarsZ and, to a lesser extent, with [[NamesTheSame Shin]] [[MacrossZero Kudo]] in Super Robot Wars Scramble Commander the 2nd and AnotherCenturysEpisode: R.)
* Main/MatthewErickson
* Main/PaleSkinnedBrunette
* Main/RedEyesTakeWarning
* Main/ReplacementScrappy (Apparently, even some of the ''staff'' didn't like him.)
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap (MassiveMultiPlayerCrossover games like SuperRobotWars are often considered to have handled him better than the actual show did. [[YourMileageMayVary There's a slight chance your mileage might vary]] as to the extent.)
* SanitySlippage: The war seriously screws with his mental health, leaving him ever more dependent on [[TheMole Rey]] to be his moral compass, as the leash he keeps on his anger becomes thinner and thinner.
* ScreamingWarrior
* ShoutOut (His Destiny Gundam has a plasma cannon in its left palm. The way is used is very similar to the finger attacks performed by various [[GGundam Mobile Fighters]].)
* SympatheticPOV: The loss of it reveals him in full as [[spoiler: an AntiVillain]], and shows just how frightening he looks from the other side of the battlefield. The suddeness of it is likely responsible for most of the cries of CharacterDerailment.
* Main/TheFettered (Totally devoted to the protecting the people he cares about and also defending the chance for peace he's lead to believe Durandal represents.)
* TheMario (Uses tactics befitting [[AcePilot a Steamroller or a Bushwhacker]], whichever his current machine is better made for)
* ThereAreNoTherapists: Kira and Athrun's lives would have been a ''lot'' easier if someone had taken the terminally depressed kid ''who just watched his entire family die'' to see a shrink. Or at least anger-management. Then again, [[ManipulativeBastard Durandal]] needs Shinn to be that screwed up for his plans to work.
* Main/TragicKeepsake (little Mayu's cellphone. )
* Main/UnstoppableRage: His best weapon in a fight, he slips into it more and more as his experiences in the war take their toll on his stability. Of all the main characters he's probably the one who enters Seed Mode most.
* [[spoiler: [[VillainProtagonist Anti-Villain Protagonist]]]]: Before the midshow perspective flip. To be fair to him, he's completely unaware of it, and remains that way.
** [[spoiler: TheReveal: This troper certainly didn't expect Zaft to end up being the bad guys again, nor did he expect Shinn, the guy who's supposed to be the hero, to not be on the good guy side at the end, and ultimately, didn't expect him to [[CurbStompBattle lose his final battle so humiliatingly]].]]
* {{Wangst}} (If we have to see that flashback one more time...)
* [[spoiler: XanatosSucker]]: [[spoiler: Shinn has no idea of the extent to which Rey and the Chairman are using him, and trusts the two of them to the end, despite being little more than a pawn in the latter's plans]].

!!Lunamaria "Luna" Hawke

One of the Minerva trio of ZAFT Redcoats. Relatively little is known about her backstory, compared to Shinn and Rey. She's cheerful and outgoing, which balances out Shinn's moody anger and Rey's calm stoicness. After Athrun joins the Minerva, she develops a slight crush on him, but it goes away after [[spoiler:he deserts the crew]] and she ends up in a relationship with Shinn instead.

She is the pilot of a red ZAKU Warrior and later the Gundam Impulse.

* Main/ActionGirlfriend (She ''tries'' to be one, but is mostly over shadowed by the males and CantCatchUp)
* Main/CharacterExaggeration (Everybody remembers that damn shuttle, but ''nobody'' remembers Luna's performance against the Gaia/Chaos/Abyss trio in the first few episodes.)
* TheChick
** Which probably qualifies as her being TheDarkChick after the persective flip.
* {{Chickification}} (Before her degeneration into a FauxActionGirl, Luna was perfectly capable of going six or seven rounds with a [[SuperPrototype Gundam]] in [[MechaMook a mass-produced suit]], something only the most badass characters in SEED or Destiny (Athrun and Mwu, anyone?) can say for themselves.)
* CustomUniformOfSexy: {{Squee}}!
* Main/DieForOurShip (Athrun x Cagalli fans bash her. Shinn x Stellar fans... well, not quite as much. Still, the haremette who takes the less heat.)
* Main/{{Expy}} (Arguably, of Fa Yuiri from ZetaGundam)
* Main/FauxActionGirl (May as well be the poster girl of this trope...)
** [[BadassDecay Or]] [[{{Chickification}} not.]]
* Main/GenkiGirl
* Main/IdiotHair
* Main/InformedAbility (She's supposed to be a ZAFT redcoat... then why is it that she performs poorly in almost every battle?)
** If SuperRobotWars is anything to go by, she'd do much better in a more melee-oriented mobile suit. Indeed, in the actual series, she seemed more effective in the Impulse rather than the ranged ZAKU Warrior, the matter of Djibril's shuttle aside.
*** Agreed. Lunamaria + Impulse's Anti-ship sword = rampant slaughter.
**** Luna managed to help take down a Destroy on her ''first flight in the Impulse.'' She's actually quite good, just outclassed by people like Athrun, Shinn, and Kira.
**** "Performs poorly in almost every battle"? Go back and watch the first five or six episodes over again, and note that Luna's fighting [[SuperPrototype Gundams]] in a [[MechaMook Gunner ZAKU]] (it's not even an AceCustom, apart from the paint job). She's at least as good as [[MobileSuitGundam Ramba Ral]], possibly better (Ral originally fought Amuro in a Gouf when those were still top-of-the-line prototype mobile suits; Luna's Gunner ZAKU appears to be the standard suit in ZAFT's arsenal at time of deployment).
* Main/MaayaSakamoto
* Main/MarykeHendrikse
* Main/MsFanservice (Her uniform includes a miniskirt and super long socks... not to mention a ShowerScene...)
* Main/PlotInducedStupidity (went out of her way to spy on Athrun where she learns the truth about Meer's identity as well as the assassination attempt against Lacus. Yet conveniently forgets this for the rest of the series).
** There are a couple of times, especially after the real Lacus reveals herself, where Luna looks like she'd really like to talk to someone about what she saw, and she remains the least convinced of the three of them (herself, Shinn, and Rey) of the righteousness of what they're doing. As for why she doesn't talk...it can't be easy trying to tell the extremely self-righteous Shinn something like that, especially with [[TheMole Rey]] around. Not to mention that Gladys told her to keep that spy-mission secret.
* Main/RunningGag (Not in GundamSeedDestiny proper, but SuperRobotWars seems determined to never let poor Lunamaria live down the fact that she missed the damn shuttle. This ranges from having a terrible Ranged score in Scramble Commander 2, despite using a Ranged Mecha, to her accuracy boosting skill requiring a whopping 30 SP to use in SuperRobotWars Z, and in SuperRobotWars K, she only learns Sure Hit at ''level 51'' when nearly every other pilot that has that skill comes with it right off the bat.)
** Averted in ''DynastyWarriorsGundam 2'', where shooting is Lunamaria's highest ranked skill. Unfortunately for her, the only [[CharacterTiers Player-class]] MS she can use when starting out is the very melee-oriented Destiny...
* Main/{{Shorttank}}
* Main/StrangledByTheRedString (Okay, it is understandable why she didn't [[spoiler:blame Shinn for "killing" her sister Meyrin, since Luna genuinely wasn't in the right state of mind due to PTSD ''and'' she thought Mey was a traitor because of the shady circumstances.]]. But [[spoiler:to actually hook up with him, with previously nothing to indicate any feeling from either side aside of [[TheStraightWillAndGrace some rather sweet friendship]], and moments right after he "killed" her sister no less?]] Even the Shinn/Luna shippers aren't happy.)
** She didn't hook up with him immediately after he [[spoiler: took out Meyrin]]. He apologised to her and hugged her when she started crying, that's all. The [[spoiler: hook-up came a couple of episodes later]]. And people have been known to fall in love quickly during warfare, especially when both of them are already pretty damaged.
* [[TomboyAndGirlyGirl Tomboy To Meyrin's Girly Girl]]
* TrueNeutral (She's pretty much the same even after the perspective switch)
* Main/ZettaiRyouiki (Uses a pink miniskirt plus long black socks and white short boots)

!!Rey Za Burrel

The third of the Minerva's pilot trio. He is calm, stoical, and very loyal to Chairman Durandal, who apparently raised him. He does his best to curb Shinn's anger issues, and dispenses advice and wisdom to his friend when necessary. [[spoiler: He is slowly revealed to be Durandal's [[TheDragon right hand man]], a clone of [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Rau Le Creuset]] the previous show's BigBad, and a WellIntentionedExtremist, who, like The Chairman, is out to impose genetic determinism on the world in an effort to prevent future conflicts. Ultimately defeated by Kira, he snaps, assassinates Durandal, and dies in the wreckage of Messiah Base, alongside The Chairman and Gladys]].

He pilots the Blaze ZAKU Phantom, later on obtaining the Legend Gundam from Durandal.

* [[spoiler: {{Archenemy}}]]: Would like to be Kira's, as revealed near the end.
* [[spoiler: AvengingTheVillain]]: We're never really told how much this plays into his motivations, but given his obsession with killing [[spoiler: Kira, who defeated and killed Le Creuset it seems likely that this is a driving factor in Rey's life]].
* BeamSpam: With the Legend.
* {{Bishonen}}: Probably the prettiest member of the male cast.
* [[BlondGuysAreEvil Blond Guys]] believe UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans
* BlueEyes: Of the cool and unflinching type.
* Main/CloningBlues ([[spoiler:He is a clone of Rau Le Crueset, who in turn was a clone of Mwu's father...]])
* [[spoiler: TheDragon]]: Tries desperately to be Durandal's.
** During Athrun's time on the Minerva, Rey would probably qualify as TheSmartGuy of their FiveManBand (technically four, though).
* Main/{{Expy}} ([[spoiler: Of Rau [[CloningBlues obviously!]].]] And arguably [[MetalGear Solidus Snake]] [[spoiler:given that both doesn't share the ages of their two predecessors, which in fact significantly different from them. They also share a connection with the new hero of the story.]])
* IllBoy (Has seizures once in a while [[spoiler: just like Rau]])
* IsntItSad (Despite becoming a more major character near the end of Destiny, he isn't featured in some of the crossover games while Kira, Athrun (the 2 leads from SEED), and Shinn (the new lead) are. AnotherCenturysEpisode: R somewhat justifies this by being set after the final episode of Destiny, [[spoiler: by which point Rey is already dead]].
* KirbyMorrow
* LawfulGood (reveals himself as Main/LawfulEvil post perspective flip)
* LightIsNotGood
* [[spoiler: [[ManipulativeBastard Apprentice Manipulative Bastard]]: He's no Le Creuset, and he's probably not even on Durandal's level, but Rey's still an expert at playing with people's emotions, especially Shinn's. Rewatching the series, it becomes very obvious that Rey is manipulating Shinn more or less consistently, keeping him isolated from the vets like Athrun, and susceptible to Durandal's promises. To be fair, he does legitimately seem to be friends with both Shinn and Luna, but then again, [[GreyAndGrayMorality what do you expect]] in a {{Gundam}} series?]]
* [[spoiler: TheMole: In an odd way, as he serves as Durandal's eyes and ears aboard the Minerva]].
* NietzscheWannabe: Like [[spoiler: The Chairman, Rey tries very hard to avoid becoming one of these, but struggles due to more or less accepting Le Creuset's nihilistic belief that [[HumansAreBastards people are inherently bad]]. Hence his LawfulEvil and UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans tendencies: he wants to create meaning, rather than just [[KillAllHumans destroying]], the [[OmnicidalManiac way]] [[SuicidalCosmicTemperTantrum that]] [[ChaoticEvil Rau]] [[ApocalypseWow did]]]].
* NumberOfTheBeast (His Gundam, the ZGMF-X'''666'''S Legend)
* RonTheDeathEater (Not as blatant as Lacus, but he gets utterly vilified in fics and nobody seems to remember he ''willingly'' helped Shinn return Stella to the Earth Forces, without any second intentions)
** Except that returning Stella ''did'' help to cement Rey and Durandal's control of Shinn, while further separating him from Captain Gladys, Athrun or anyone else who might have provided an opposing viewpoint. Still calling him a being of pure evil is a [[CharacterExaggeration serious stretch]].
* TheReveal: [[spoiler: He's a clone of [[OmncidalManiac Rau]] [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Le Creuset]], the BigBad of the previous series and is helping Durandal to try and make up for what his previous self did]].
* Main/SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan (The Sensitive half)
* ToshihikoSeki
* [[spoiler: VillainousBreakdown]]: [[spoiler: An utterly epic one. It culminates in him shooting Durandal, and dying alongside he and Gladys as Messiah Base collapses, [[TearJerker crying for his mother]]]].
* Main/WellIntentionedExtremist (Supports his adoptive father Durandal's Destiny Plan, since he thinks it will prevent the birth of other cloned children like him)

!!Athrun Zala
--> "The enemy? And who are they?"

Kira's old friend from SEED. He rejoins the ZAFT military when war breaks out once again and is assigned to the Minerva. His accomplishments and fame earn him the adoration of much of the crew, apart from the surly Shinn. He initially opposes his old friends on the Archangel, citing their actions only exacerbating the conflict, but he defects when he catches on to Durandal's true nature.

He pilots the Gundam Savior while on board the Minerva, and upon rejoining the Three Ship Alliance obtains the Gundam Infinite Justice.

* TheAce
* AesopAmnesia (All those lessons about what is worth fighting for from SEED have atrophied away by the time of the Second Bloody Valentine War. [[CharacterDerailment Peace apparently makes you dumb]], folks.)
** Or PTSD leaves you searching desperately for something to believe in, even if it comes from a rather suspicious person.
* AkiraIshida
* BackToBackBadasses (With [[ZetaGundam Quattro]] in AnotherCenturysEpisode: R, alongside Kamille and Shinn, and Amuro and Kira.)
* BadAss
* BigBrotherMentor (To Shinn, with limited success)
* ChickMagnet
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: His reasons are justified, but still..
** Actually, Athrun is a subversion or inversion of that trope as he is repeatedly betrayed by people he trusts.
* {{Determinator}}: Fully demonstrates this part of his personality on his first flight in the Infinite Justice. He's just out of the hospital, he's got a gaping chest wound, and he not only manages to help defend Orb but [[spoiler: [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome drives off]] [[TheBerserker Shinn]]]]
* EnsembleDarkhorse: [[ChickMagnet You know]] [[EstrogenBrigadeBait why]]. Also maybe due to Kira and Shinn's fans [[SeriousBusiness loudly bashing]] each other that [[TakeAThirdOption some fans prefer him as the main character instead]].
** Arguably, that's [[AuthorsSavingThrow what Fukuda himself did in the special edition]].
* EstrogenBrigadeBait (He retains this status)
* FanNickname: Judas Zala, though it is less common than Jesus Yamato.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan (Bright Slap's Shinn after he burns a defenseless base to the ground, and later socks him in the face when [[spoiler:Shinn destroys the Freedom.]])
** [[HypocriticalHumor Ironically for opposite reasons]]. Shinn went out of his way and attacked the base to save civilians in spite of an order to fall back. And then Shinn ''followed'' his orders to the letter the second time. Make up your mind, Athrun!
** Athrun was upset about his [[spoiler:childhood friend's apparent death]] and Shinn was bragging about it. He was also upset about Shinn missing the point that Kira wasn't really fighting back.
*** Agreed. Both times Shinn did something stupid: 1) Risking his friend's lives in order to save a few civillians, and 2) trying to kill someone who wasn't fighting back. It's more the stupidity of it that gets to Athrun, not whether or not he was following orders. It's easy enough to see how Shinn could get a mixed message from it though.
**** Actually, Shinn did not risk his friends' live to save the civilians. He was disobeying orders before he knew the EA base, let alone the imprisoned civilians existed.
**** So he was risking they're lives because he ''didn't like the orders?'' Hit him again Athrun.
* GreenEyes
* InformedAbility (In universe case. Many questioned him being in FAITH, especially Shinn, after losing to the Freedom and having the Saviour Gundam damaged beyond repair. * LauncherOfAThousandShips (Yes, he retained this too..)
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority

A BridgeBunny on board the Minerva, and Lunamaria's little sister, and, like her sister, crushes on Athrun. She doesn't have much of a significant role in the story until she gets pulled into Athrun's escape and defection to the Three Ship Alliance, where she becomes a BridgeBunny on board the Eternal, placing herself in direct conflict with her sister.

Later revealed to be an ex-girlfriend of Durandal's, she remains loyal to him and to ZAFT despite her doubts [[spoiler: until just before the very end]]. Tries very hard to be a fair commander, despite having her authority repeatedly ignored by Shinn, and subverted by Durandal.

!Earth Alliance Forces
!!Stellar Louisser
--> "Shinn...protect Stella..."

A member of the Extended (a group of genetically enhanced humans able to operate on par with Coordinators), Stellar Loussier is first seen participating in the Armoury One raid. While in battle she behaves rather much like a berserker, out of battle she is childlike and innocent, curious over a series of mundane things. She also sees Neo Roanoke as a father figure. She has a huge fear of dying, hence her [[BerserkButton blockword]] being "die". She develops a relationship with Shinn, and is briefly held captive by ZAFT before Shinn returns her to the Earth Forces. [[spoiler: Killed by Kira Yamato while piloting the ''Destroy''; she recieves a touching send-off by Shinn]].

She is at first the pilot of the Gaia Gundam, and later is placed in the cockpit of the first Destroy Gundam.

* AxeCrazy: She hides it well under her CloudCuckooLander exterior, but underneath she is every bit as violently insane (if far more pitiable than) Auel.
* [[BlondesAreEvil Blondes Are Horribly Screwed-Up]]: She's a psychological mess.
* Main/BrokenBird: Goddamn you [[ManipulativeBastard Neo]]...
* Main/CharacterDevelopment: As with Shinn, it's all negative. Neo's mindwipes, combined with increased exposure to drugs, and the general stress of both war and her relationship with Shinn cause Stella regress further and further into childhood as a means of mental defense. By the end, she's not much more than a frightened little girl.
* Main/CloudCuckooLander (A dark version of this trope. Becomes more of a standard version during her SanitySlippage, although it's still pretty dark considering there is nothing cute about slaughtering millions because you're afraid of "The Scary Things".)
* CompletelyMissingThePoint: Shinn's desire to [[spoiler: avenge her after Kira halts her rampage via lethal force. Even if Kira hadn't killed her, Stella would have either been executed by ZAFT, or died within a few days of withdrawal. [[CompleteMonster Djibril]] and [[TheDragon Neo]] effectively took away any chance she had of having a life, and she couldn't be saved, despite what Shinn (and some fans) believe]].

* {{Expy}} (ZetaGundam fans will notice Stellar's backstory and [[spoiler: how she dies]] is an obvious paralell to Four Murasame.)
* TheDarkChick: Compare her CloudCuckooLander behaviour to that of her teammates, the AxeCrazy [[TheBrute Auel]], and [[EvilGenius coldly rational Sting]], let alone [[TheDragon Neo]] [[ManipulativeBastard Roanoke's]]. * TransformingMecha (The Gaia can transform into a BuCUE form for quick ground movement. Later on, she gets the Destroy Gundam. It has a Mobile Armor mode and Mobile suit mode.)
* Main/{{Tykebomb}} (Bred and trained for Phantom Pain.)
* Main/VaporWear (She doesn't wear bra in her civilian outfit. No one knows if she does in her military outfit though.)
* Main/TheWoobie (''Nothing'' good ever happens to her. Her meeting Shinn was the first memorable experience she ever had. Overlaps with WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds when she is forced to pilot the Destroy Gundam).
* Main/ZettaiRyouiki (Her military outfit)

!!Neo Roanoke
--> "Sometimes I wonder when I crossed the line and became a wicked man."

A mysterious person who serves as Djibril's right-hand man, and Blue Cosmos' field leader. A real bastard, who prey's on his subordinates' emotions in order to control them, Neo and his team serve as the major antagonists for the first half of the series. [[spoiler: Later revealed to be Mu La Flaga, who somehow survived being blown up and had his mind wiped and his memories rewritten by Blue Cosmos. He's eventually shot down by Kira and brought on board the Archangel, where meeting Mu's lover Murrue touches off a brief identity crisis leading to his defection.]]

* TheAce (Once he [[spoiler: does his HeelFaceTurn]].)
* AmnesiacDissonance (Meeting Murrue touches off a bad case of it.)
* BadassNormal: He takes on Shinn and Rey at the ''same time'' using a Mobile Armour, and without any genetic enhancements of his own. ''[[BadAss Badass]]''!
* BigBrotherMentor: Neo is what happens when one of these turns to evil. See ManipulativeBastard below.
* BlingBlingBang ([[spoiler:The ''golden'' Gundam Akatsuki he pilots after his HeelFaceTurn. The characters actually have to avert their eyes.]])
* CriminalAmnesiac (Courtesy of Djibril.)
* [[spoiler: DeathEqualsRedemption]]: Tries this through an [[spoiler: attempted HeroicSacrifice. He survives. Still a pretty big turn around given his previous behaviour.]]
** [[spoiler: I thought it was the other way round: his attempted [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice]] prompting the return of his memories and the "death" of the Neo persona (and good riddance to it).]]
* TheDragon: To Djibril, leading both the Navy and [[FiveBadBand Phantom Pain]] for him. Overlaps with HypercompetentSidekick/ DragonInChief as he, and not his boss, is the reason for most of the Earth Forces military successes.
** [[spoiler: Probably Kira's [[TheBigGuy Big Guy]] after his HeelFaceTurn]]
* [[spoiler: HeelFaceTurn: Prompted by falling for Ramius again, and discovering that maybe there is something out there worth fighting for. And that won't require him to brainwash children.]]
* [[HesBack He's Back]] ([[spoiler:He finally recovers his memories as Mu la Flaga during the finale, and immediately proceeds to do a HeroicSacrifice minus the sacrifice.]])
* [[spoiler: HeroicSacrifice]]: Attempted. [[spoiler: thanks to the Akatsuki's plating he survives.]]
* KarmaHoudini ([[spoiler: Never gets any comeuppance for his part in the raid on Armory-1 ''or'' promising to make sure Stella stays out of the war when Shinn returns her.]] Made especially painful due to the fact everyone just kinda forgets about all the bullshit he pulled. SuperRobotWars, [[FixFic as usual]], does damage control by showing him to have genuine remorse for what he did.)
** The comp films fixed it a bit, they toned down his evilness a touch, making him less a complete bastard. Still not exactly a super great dude though.
*** He actually does seem to have some doubts about his job in the show as well (look at his expression during the mindwipes, the page quote). Doesn't excuse his behaviour but it does explain his [[spoiler: HeelFaceTurn]] better. As for why he's accepted back on the Archangel, for better or for worse, he still [[spoiler: looks like their friend]]. His KarmaHoudini status is actually ''[[JustifiedTrope justified]]'' when you remember that Kira and co. don't ''know'' what a bastard he's been. Out of the main cast, the only one who's had contact with him is Shinn and he's playing for the [[AntiVillain other team]] at this point.
* ManipulativeBastard: He controls the Extended by playing off of their worst fears, and promises Shinn he'll keep Stella away from the battlefield, [[spoiler: before putting her in the Destroy]]. Worst part is that everyone more or less trusts him, due to his ability to still project [[spoiler: La Flaga's BigBrotherMentor aura]].
* MaskPower (To hide the fact that he's really [[spoiler:Mu la Flaga]]. Just in case [[TakehitoKoyasu his]] [[TrevorDevall voice]] and [[spoiler:gun barrel mobile armor]] didn't give it away.)
* OfficialCouple (With Murrue.)
* ParentalSubstitute / TeamDad: Sinister version. Stella sees him as a father figure, and he certainly plays the role to all three extended, but it's equal parts sympathy and just keeping [[{{Tykebomb}} them]] under control.
* TheRival: To Rey. Mainly at the beginning.
* TheUntwist (His identity is quite obvious.)
** Believe it or not, he did fool some people (and I admit, I'm one of [[TooDumbToLive 'em]]). Probably one of the upsides of there being such a small pool of voice actors to draw on: you can be mislead into thinking it's the same guy voicing a different character.
* [[spoiler:ZenSurvivor]]

!!Auel Neider

Another Extended member of Phantom Pain. This teenager is usually easygoing and cheerful, which translates into a mocking arrogance (and at times, outright sadism) in battle. His [[BerserkButton blockword]] is "mother", apparently because one of the female scientists was kind to him during his days as a test subject. [[spoiler: Killed by Shinn, he is the first the three to die]].

He pilots the Gundam Abyss.

* Main/AxCrazy: Probably the worst of the three, at least initially.
* Main/BigBrotherComplex (Towards Stellar. When a soldier attempts to move her out of the way by grabbing her, Auel's reaction is to almost stab the guy to death)
* Main/BloodKnight
* Main/BradSwaile
* TheBrute: To Neo's [[TheDragon Dragon]], and Stella's DarkChick.
* Main/CuteLittleFangs
* Main/GunKata (does it in episode 1, complete with GunsAkimbo.)
* Main/IsntItSad (of all the Phantom Pain pilots, he is the one who gets the least recognition. Super Robot Wars K ignores his existence altogether.)
** Not exactly ignored; in the Berlin mission, Sting vaguely recalls someone else besides himself, Stella, and Neo, and in the final Destiny stage, he claims that he wants everyone and everything to burn, including himself for [[spoiler: not protecting Stella and Auel (specifically stating Auel's name)]]. So he existed, we just don't see him.
* KickTheDog: Uses Stella's block word against her constantly.
* Main/MasakazuMorita
* PetTheDog: See BigBrotherComplex above. It doesn't make up for his sadism or cruelty, but it's nice to see the drugs left something human behind.
* TheRival: More or less to Shinn.
* Main/TransformingMecha (The Abyss can transform into a mobile armor suited for underwater operations)
* Main/{{Tykebomb}}
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: The PsychoSerum seems to have had the worst effect on Auel, as he's (initally at least) the least stable of the trio, often coming off as a junior version of [[AxeCrazy Shani]] from the [[GundamSeed original]] Blue Cosmos team.
* [[Main/YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Periwinkle Hair]]

!!Sting Oakley

The oldest member of Phantom Pain, Sting serves as their leader during Neo's absences. He comes off as the most well-adjusted of the group, since we never see him really snap like Stellar and Auel (his greater sanity is likely why he is in charge). Following [[spoiler: Stella and Auel's deaths, he starts exhibting AxeCrazy tendencies, and is killed by Shinn at the Battle of Heaven's Base]].

He's the pilot of the Gundam Chaos and later the Destroy.

* AxCrazy: Late in the series he starts to exhibit these tendencies while piloting the Destroy. It could be argued that it could be due to how he no longer has much in the way of human interaction to curb these tendencies, now that both of his teammates are dead.
* BigBrotherMentor: Is a bit of one to Auel, albeit of the "hellishly dysfunctional family" variety.
* BrentMiller
* EvilGenius: Could be argued, in the sense that he's the brightest and most undercontrol of his teammates, leading the trio whenever [[TheDragon Neo]] is absent.
* JunichiSuwabe
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: He's the only member of the Phantom Pain trio with any concept of when to retreat, an act which succeeds in qualifying him as [[EvilGenius the smart one]] in the group as compared to [[TheBrute Auel]] and [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Stella]]. Once he gets his hands on the Destroy...[[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity see below]].
* MidSeasonUpgrade: From the Chaos to the Destroy, much to the dismay of ZAFT's Heaven's Base assault force.
* OnlySaneMan: At least compared to Auel and Stella.
* TheRival: To an extent, with Athrun.
* TransformingMecha (The Chaos can transform into a more compact form for quicker movement. And like Stellar, he pilots the Destroy Gundam later in the series.)
* {{Tykebomb}}: Like all the other Extended.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: Sting, like most of the Extended is already a bit of a loose cannon, thanks to years of abuse and drug addiction (although compared to [[GundamSeed Shani and co]] he's a piller of stability), but he truly loses it when--after already [[spoiler: losing Auel and Stella]]--he gets his hands on the Destroy.
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Green Hair]]

!!Lord Djibril

The leader of Blue Cosmos, and a major antagonist throughout the show, Lord Djibril is best described as a total bastard. Vicious, cruel, arrogant, and not especially bright, he wants to slaughter every Coordinator on the planet, while simultaneously establishing his own control. Responsible for the creation of the Extended, Neo's brainwashing, and much of the misery in-series, he is [[spoiler: slain by Rey while attempting to escape a losing battle]].

* BigBad (as far as Shinn is concerned)
** By the time Durandal's done with them, most of the world agrees with Shinn, and Djibril does fullfill this role for most of the show's first half or so. Also the BigBad to [[TheDragon Neo]] and the [[{{Tykebomb}} Extended Trio]] in a FiveBadBand sense.
* Main/CardCarryingVillain (seriously, this guy makes Skeletor look complex...)
* Main/ChaoticEvil (actually, more like [[LawfulStupidChaoticStupid Chaotic Stupid AND Stupid Evil]]...)
* Main/CompleteMonster (If you weren't already convinced by the time he's planning to exploit a ColonyDrop for all the political gain he can, his use of the [[WaveMotionGun Requiem]] will.)
* DirtyCoward: Granted he's a politician and not a soldier, but every time something goes wrong, Djibril runs, leaving his troops in the lurch. I can't believe I'm saying this, but it almost makes me miss ''[[CompleteMonster Azrael]]'' who at least had the balls to supervise operations in person.
* EvilIsHammy: Of all the characters in show, he's easily the one who chews the most scenery. Somehow it just makes him all the more disgusting.
* FantasticRacism: He [[{{Understatement}} really doesn't like]] Coordinators.
* FeedMe: That one scene as he fires the [[KillSat Requiem]]: "And now Gilbert Durandal, I will play a Requiem for you and all your kind!" Tell me you didn't feel like you'd contracted [[LargeHam swine flu]] when you heard that.
* Main/FashionVictimVillain (Wears some goofy looking cross between a suit and pajama robe. Not to mention lipstick.)
* Main/HideyukiHori
* NonActionGuy
* ReplacementScrappy: In-show example. He doesn't have nearly the influence, power or brains of his predecessor, [[GundamSeed Murata Azrael]].
* Main/SmugSnake (Complete with RightHandCat.)
* Main/TooDumbToLive (Yeah, using the [=WMD=] Gundam Destroy to attack territories with ties to your allies is going to go over ''so'' well...)

* LawfulNeutral [[spoiler:--> LawfulGood]]
* TheMario
* TheStoic
* {{Tykebomb}}
* WhiteHairedPrettyBoy
* VillainProtagonist (Unlike Destiny itself, Stargazer makes it pretty clear by the second episode he doesn't care what he does as long as he just follows orders)

!! Shams Couza

* TheBrute
* GogglesDoNothing (he wears glasses, but they're just for show)
* ScaryBlackMan
* TooDumbToLive / IdiotBall ([[spoiler:Sure, idiot, charge head-on into a whole army of Mobile Suits because you're blinded by your hatred for Coordinators! It's not like your Phase Shift armor is going to go down leaving you a sitting duck for them and getting you killed in the process!]] Some elite soldier you are...)

!! Myudi Holcroft

* AlasPoorVillain (Attempted, but it's hard to feel sorry for a Blue Cosmos member)
* CatchPhrase ("The only good Coordinator is a dead Coordinator.")
* DarkChick
* [[FauxActionGirl Faux]] DarkActionGirl (Myudi is trumped up as an elite soldier, and pilots a Gundam-like machine, [[spoiler:but she is killed by a bunch of mass-produced grunt units]])
** Then again, she ''was'' up against experienced Coordinators and outnumbered even with Sven and Shams backing her up.
* MsFanservice
* {{Tsurime}}

!ZAFT Forces
!!Chairman Gilbert Durandal

The new ZAFT Chairman, Durandal is a moderate who believes that Naturals and Coordinators can leave in peace together. He assumes the role of mentor towards the cast, and often talks about his plans for a better tomorrow. He also seems to be a bit of a fatalist. [[spoiler: He is eventually revealed as a DarkMessiah figure, plotting to unify the world by direct force, and impose genetic determinism to ensure that there will be no more wars. He's also an old friend of Le Creuset, the previous BigBad, who clearly influenced his thinking. He dies at Messiah Base after being shot by his [[TheDragon Dragon]], Rey]].

* Main/AffablyEvil
* Main/AntiVillain (at least, [[spoiler:before the Destiny Plan gets unveiled, and even then he's still pretty sympathetic. He genuinely wants to save the world He just has a very wrongheaded idea about how to do it]].)
* BadassLongrobe
* [[spoiler: BigBad (to Kira and company)]]
* BrokenPedestal: To Athrun, the ZAFT pilots who defect to Lacus, and a decent portion of the fanbase
* Main/ChessMaster (a great political manipulator with an high level of charisma. Also, a ''literal'' [[SmartPeoplePlayChess chessmaster]]...)
* [[spoiler: DarkMessiah]]: Although he certainly doesn't think of himself that way.
* Main/{{Darwinist}}: Believes a person's role in the world should [[spoiler: be determined by their genetic predisposition. Sees it as a way to insure that everyone feels comfortable with their place in society]].
* DracoInLeatherPants: Gets the biggest set of any character in series. He's not TheHero people. Figure it out.
* [[spoiler: TheEvilsOfFreeWill]]: [[spoiler: Thinks that the ability of humans to make their own choices is the key reason why people like [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Le Creuset]] have come into existence]].
* Main/GracefulLoser (A rare exception to the standard fare of screaming and raving villains in the Cosmic Era. [[spoiler:So he dies, getting shot by his adoptive son. He still gets to spend his final moments in relative peace with Talia and Rey and know they'll be together in the afterlife.]]
* [[spoiler: [[ILetGwenStacyDie I Let My Best Friend Go Completely Insane And Try To Blow Up The World]]: A major part of Durandal's motivation as evidenced in his chessmatch with the creep, whose ghost is still haunting him. Even dead, Le Creuset continues--in a very disturbing way--to pull the strings.]]
* Main/HeyItsThatVoice ([[ShuichiIkeda Hey]].. [[MobileSuitGundam IT'S CHAR!!!]])
* Main/LawfulEvil
* Main/ManipulativeBastard, and by extention, Main/MagnificentBastard. What do you expect from [[spoiler: an old friend of Le Creuset's?]]
* MisaimedFandom: There is a bit of a difference between being a sympathetic WellIntentionedExtremist, and being [[TheMessiah the saint]] some people see Durandal as.
* NietzscheWannabe: Tries very hard to avoid becoming one of these. It's fairly obvious in the flashbacks that [[spoiler: the reason he could never win his arguments with Le Creuset was because he had already accepted the latter's basic premise: that HumansAreBastards and the universe is a cold, unfeeling place. Unlike Rau, he doesn't think that means he should give up all hope, and is out to inject some meaning into the world, [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans however he can]]]]. Is that a subversion, or an aversion, or what?
* NonActionGuy
* PaleSkinnedBrunette
* Main/ParentalSubstitute (To Rey, whom he raised ever since he was a child)
* Main/TallDarkAndHandsome
* Main/TedCole
* Main/UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans
* [[spoiler: WellIntentionedExtremist]]: Wants to [[spoiler: TakeOverTheWorld and impose genetic determinism in order to prevent someone like [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Le Creuset]] from ever coming close to [[ApocalypseWow success]] again. He takes it ''way'' too far though.]]
* XanatosRoulette (though it was never proven in the series, it is very possible that he was the mastermind behind the Armory One Raid (He's shown smiling after the Gundams are stolen), the attempted assasination of Lacus Clyne (he had the means, and the motives to kill her), and the Break The World incident in order
to start the war that would allow him to enact his Destiny Plan.)
* WorldDomination: He's got better reasons than most megalomaniacs, but his plan still requires
this in order to work.

!!Meer Campbell
--> "I ''am'' Lacus Clyne."

A GirlNextDoor and Lacus Clyne {{fangirl}}, strongly implied to be a war orphan. She is chosen to get plastic surgery and replace her after Lacus goes into retirement, as she has similar singing abilities and voice to her idol. They didn't give her breast reduction surgery or have her sing similar songs... and for worse, her frail mental and emotional state also suffer a lot.

* [[AscendedFanboy Ascended Fangirl]] (Played very tragically)
* BecomingTheMask (Again, used for absolute tragedy)
* AntiVillain (She tells Athrun that she knows what she's doing is wrong, but still does it because [[BecomingTheMask she wants to continue being Lacus]] instead of the unknown Meer Campbell that nobody loves and needs)
--> '''Meer:''' Lady Lacus is so beautiful, so kind, so adored! (...) [[HeroicSelfDeprecation But me? I'm not needed by anyone]].
* DieForOurShip (Horribly and cruelly bashed by Athrun x Cagalli fans.)
** [[spoiler: AlasPoorScrappy (Until she bit it, though. It's in bad taste to bash someone who pulled a HeroicSacrifice, after all. Even then, some ''particularly'' vocal A/C fans gloated about her death... [[WhatAnIdiot in the blogs of well-known Meer supporters]])]]
* {{Expy}}: Being the polar opposite of Lacus, she is likely the [[GundamWing Dorothy Catalonia]]/[[TurnAGundam Kihel Heim]] to Lacus's Relena Peacecraft/Dianna Soreil, at least in concept.
* IdolSinger
** GlamorousWartimeSinger
* GagBoobs (Her giant knockers make it easy to tell she's not the real Lacus Clyne. And for the matter..)
* {{Gainaxing}}: [[{{Squee}} My god watch her perform!]]
* HotterAndSexier: What she did to Lacus' "sweet and pure" image. Also, compare her GirlNextDoor past self to her current one.
* MeaningfulName: Her name means lake in Dutch, which [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic symbolizes]] her as Lacus' (whose name means lake in Latin) doppleganger. Additionally, her name is a phonetic spelling of the word "mirror", to illustrate that she is Lacus' mirror image.
* [[spoiler:RedemptionEqualsDeath]] ([[TakingTheBullet And]] [[TearJerker how!]])
* {{Stripperiffic}} (Her outfits!)
* [[TalkingToHimself Talking To Herself]] (She and Lacus share the [[RieTanaka same]] [[ChantalStrand voice]] [[JillianMichaels actresses]]. [[spoiler: And it played straight as they will meet face-to-face for the first and last time later in the story.]])
* TallDarkAndBishoujo: Her hair color was ''really'' black.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Her self esteem is so low that she deeply wants to be noticed and loved, specially by her beloved/hated "Lady Lacus".
* WhatTheHellHero ([[spoiler: What she attempts to pull on Lacus when they meet face to face, even pointing a gun at her while saying she's the one who's been truly working for peace while Lacus was away. * ZettaiRyouiki: Wear a nice Grade A (long socks plus frilled pleated miniskirt) [[spoiler: in the same episode she dies.]]

!!Yzak Joule
--> "Dearka and me? We probably should have died a long time ago."

* TheAtoner: Not a full-fledged example, but uh, read the page quote. Yzak knows what he did in Seed was wrong, and he tells Athrun that his goal in Seed Destiny is to try and make up for it.
* BadassNormal: Complete with taking on the Extended in a modified ZAKU.
* BigDamnHeroes: He and Dearka do this a couple of times, the most notable being [[spoiler: their last minute HeelFaceTurn and attack on the Requiem.]]
* ChaoticGood: He does try to be [[LawfulGood Lawful]] though, with very limited success. In the end, Yzak will do what he thinks is right, not what he's ordered to. [[spoiler: You probably should have thought that through ''before'' assigning him to guard the [[WaveMotionGun Requiem]], eh Durandal?]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Compare Yzak in ''SEED'' to this one.
* HeterosexualLifePartners / HoYay: With Dearka

!Orb Union

!!Cagalli Yula Athha

* ActionGirl: When she gets her hands on [[spoiler: the Akatsuki Gundam]] Cagalli reminds us all why we liked her in the first place. Which leads to...
** BadassNormal: The fact that she not only downs dozens of ZAFT pilots, but ''survives'' an encounter with [[TheBerserker Shinn in the fourth quarter of the show]] all without any genetic tampering is pretty impressive when you think about it.
* Main/BlingBlingBang
* Main/{{Chickification}} (as part of general CharacterDerailment, but gets better ''somewhat'' and regains control or ORB.)
** {{Justified}} by her move into democratic politics something that [[HotBlooded Cagalli]] is not exactly cut out for. She ends up dependent on Yuna and his uncle because she believes they know what they're doing, and she herself is still haunted by a desire to fullfill her (entirely wrong-headed) ideas about who her father wanted her to be (ideas, by the way, that she's held since [[GundamSeed SEED]]). When she finally realises that he would want her to be herself [[spoiler: via the gift of the Akatsuki Gundam]] her self-confidence and combat effectiveness is restored.
* Main/DieForOurShip (Among the less affected of the Athrun Harem, but still very noticeable. It must be also noted that a part of her DFOS status came as a backlash from other haremettes's fans because of the behavior of the [=AsuCaga=] VocalMinority)
* LawfulGood
* LoveHurts: Whatever the status of thier relationship is by the end (and god, thanks to numerous different stories from the director we'll probably never know) there's no arguing that most of her interactions with Athrun after his [[spoiler: return to the [[CoolShip Archangel]]]] are pretty painful to watch.
* Main/NaomiShindo
* [[spoiler: [[HesBack She's Back]]: After getting her hands on the Akatsuki. So, everyone thought she'd been completely Chickified, eh? Welcome back Cagalli.]]
* Main/WaterWorks ([[MemeticMutation Cagalli is crying now!]])

* Main/KenjiNojima
* ManipulativeBastard: He certainly thinks he's one, but he's no match for Neo or even [[CardCarryingVillain Djibril]], let alone [[BigBad Durandal]]. His greatest skill seems to be using an eighteen year-old's insecurites and father complex against her.
* Main/MemeticOutfit (His sleepwear)
* NeutralEvil (Also [[SelfishGoodSelfishEvil Selfish Evil]])
* Main/NonActionGuy
* Main/ThePaolo

!Crew of the Archangel

!!Kira Yamato

TheHero of the previous series, Kira returns to action following an attack on his girlfriend by Coordinator assassins. His general dissillusionment and inability to trust ZAFT or the Earth Forces put him into direct conflict with Athrun, Shinn and the rest of the
new page. cast. [[spoiler: He eventually regains his position as the main character, and leads the Three Ships Alliance against Durandal, much in the same way he did in Seed.]] A very divisive character.

* [[Main/AmericansHateTingle American Gundam Fans Hate Kira Yamato]]: ''Oh SO much''!
** He isn't hated as much north of the border.
*** And as visiting Gundam chat rooms can show he even has lots of fans in the States. It's more that his hatedom is very loud.
* {{Archenemy}}: [[DecoyProtagonist Shinn]] and later [[TheDragon Rey]] see him as this. Initially, Kira doesn't take a lot of [[UnkownRival notice]] of this; he eventually clues in, culminating in his final battle and inverse HannibalLecture against Rey.
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: He's an admiral by the end of the series. Given that he's also TheUnfettered this makes a certain amount of sense: if he's going to act on his own, why not make it legal for him?
* BackToBackBadasses: With [[ZetaGundam Amuro]] in AnotherCenturysEpisode: R, alonside Kamille and Shinn, and Quattro and Athrun.
* BadAss: How his fans see him, especially now that he's lost the [[BadassAngster angst]].
* Main/BoringInvincibleHero: Most of the time.
* BornLucky
* BrokenBase: Shinn fans hate Kira and company. Kira fans hate Shinn. [[SeriousBusiness Both groups are very loud about it]].
* CompletelyMissingThePoint (Raises the issue of whether or not Athrun would be willing to attack ORB. Athrun responds by urging Kira to take Cagalli back to ORB and sort everything out there so that ZAFT ''won't'' have to fight them and can focus on the true villains. Kira doesn't even realize how valid a strategy like this would be.)
** Cagalli had already been reduced to a figurehead before she left Orb, returning her might not have done much good. Besides I doubt that searching for Djbril was the real reason for ZAFT's invasion of Orb.
*** Kira by this point is convinced that Durandal is the BigBad (and therefore, the "true villain"). Whether the audience agrees with him or not doesn't matter. His refusal to negotiate with ZAFT or return to Orb is based on the fact that a) he believes Durandal tried to have Lacus killed and is therefore not a heck of a lot better than Djibril, and b) Cagalli's total lack of power in Orb, courtesy of [[SmugSnake Yuna's]] machinations. The only way he figures he can fix things is by intervening. It's not so much missing the point, as not believing it's an option.
* FanNickname: Jesus Yamato.
* FriendToAllChildren
* Main/GodModeSue: How the hatedom sees him.
** Except the plot was almost always [[TragicHero working against him]] until he finally [[HostileShowTakeover took the spotlight]] late in the series. Other than that, in terms of abilities, it was foolish for anyone to take on the Ultimate Coordinator with any hopes in winning (with one [[NoOneCouldSurviveThat exception/fluke]]).
*** Not to mention that he's pretty much a bogeyman in series, no one is glad to see him, and he can't save everyone. Heck he can't even convince Athrun to switch sides on his own.
**** Being the Ultimate Coordinator does not mean no one has any hope of beating him. He's beaten several times inside a mech. Outside a mech, Athrun, Auel, Stella, and Sting are clearly better at combat.
* TheHero: No matter what the audience's attitude is, this is his role in the plot.
** Also HeroAntagonist: Before the perspective flip, when his need to end the conflict quickly puts him in direct confrontation with Athrun and Shinn.
*** Finally, TheDragon They may not call him this, but a lot of [[RonTheDeathEater fans' opinions]] of Kira and Lacus more or less make him out to be hers. Is it possible to have a Heroic Dragon?
**** There's a BigGood to contrast BigBad, so I see no reason for there not to be a Heroic Dragon (though a better name may need to be in order).
* [[HesBack He's Back]]: His return from defeat in the Strike Freedom is [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome pretty damn awesome]], as he totals twenty-five ZAFT mobile suits and their battleship in a couple of minutes. And then he arrives on earth in the middle of the battle for Orb. Watch out Shinn.
* HonourBeforeReason: Right up until Shinn used it against him to total the Freedom. In subsequent fights he's more active in his attempts to kill Shinn, frequently aiming for his cockpit. Even then, he refuses to pursue Shinn whenever the latter backs down, and passes up a few killshots.
* Main/HostileShowTakeover: To the ire of some, and the relief of others.
* Main/InternetBackdraft (Say anything positive about him in certain GSD forums, and posters will ''have your head''.)
* MartialPacifist
* MattHill
* NeutralGood: Leaning towards ChaoticGood.
* OlderAndWiser: (YourMileageMayVary)
* Main/OmniscientMoralityLicense (When Athrun calls him out on his actions just making things worse, [[CharacterDerailment his response is pretty much "So what?"]] Which takes us to...)
** Main/WhatTheHellHero (gets hit with this in [[SuperRobotWars Super Robot Taisen Z]]. Also, note that his actions are considerably toned down in such games: in K, he did not get involved by his own volition and it was ZAFT who attacked him first, considering him a threat to their plans.)
*** Athrun's criticisms were that he was confusing the battlefield. Kira was creating confusion as a side effect of trying to make both sides stop fighting. Apparently striving to end a conflict is a bad thing, especially when neither side is 'good'.
*** Kira thinks that the war is unjustified, and that no matter who gets hurt in the short run, things will be better in the long-run when the fighting stops. After some of the things he saw in Seed (including a barely averted ApocalypseWow), I can't say I blame him--especially since almost the ''exact same thing'' happens this time around. And he believes that ZAFT ''did'' attack him first in the show (remember the assassination attempt on Lacus?) And saying "So What?" in an argument is in character for Kira. Remember his attempts to [[ShutUpHannibal Shut Up Rau]]? He also happens to be ''right'' about Durandal having a hidden agenda.
* PlotArmor (Oh boy, this is a doozy. Somehow he manages to survive the Freedom having a giant anti-ship sword rammed through in the general cockpit area, before exploding. [[NoOneCouldSurviveThat Underwater.]])
* PurpleEyes
* RealMenWearPink: Averted when [[spoiler:he pilots the Strike Rogue. He changed its specs so it can be blue just like his original [[GundamSEED Strike Gundam]], instead of its original pink color.]]
* RogueProtagonist: He knows Durandal's got an agenda. [[DecoyProtagonist Shinn]] and [[SupportingProtagonist Athrun]] don't. This causes [[{{Understatement}} problems]].
* ShootTheDog: [[spoiler: Does it to [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Stella]] without even being aware of it]].
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVSCynicism: Seems to have moved further towards the cynical end since SEED. Then again, he's been through hell.
* Main/SoichiroHoshi
* Main/SpotlightStealingSquad
* TakeAThirdOption: He again refuses to pick a side, targeting both ZAFT ''and'' the Earth Forces.
* TechnicalPacifist
* TooManyBelts
* Main/TheUnfettered: Which really sucks for political leaders with unethical agendas.
* Main/TheWesley, YourMileageMayVary of course.
* ZenSurvivor

!!Lacus Clyne

Kira's girlfriend and an important political figure, Lacus essentially dropped off the radar following the conclusion of Seed. Forced back into the political spotlight by an attempt on her person, she assumes leadership of the forces arrayed against ZAFT and the Earth Forces. [[spoiler: She is shown to have become leader of ZAFT following the end of the series]]. Like Kira, she is real BaseBreaker.

* Main/AlternateCharacterInterpretation (Is she a genuinely good person trying to do what is best for everyone and not above of manipulating people if needed, or a heartlessly manipulative {{Chessmaster}} who just wants to take over the galaxy? You decide.)
** Wait... [[FlatWhat What?]] Where the heck to you get that last one??? She only returned to the political spotlight because of an assassination attempt on her person.
* [[Main/AmericansHateTingle American Gundam Fans Hate Lacus Clyne]]: More that the Hatedom is incredibley vocal.
* BigGood (if Kira's TheHero, Lacus can be seen as this)
* Main/BlueEyes
* Main/DoNotAdjustYourSet (Her CrowningMomentOfAwesome, in which she utterly PWNS [[spoiler: Dullindal]])
* Main/ChantalStrand
* {{Expy}}: Again, she's based on [[GundamWing Relena Peacecraft]] (circa ''Endless Waltz''), but she also has some traits of [[TurnAGundam Dianna Soreil]].
* FanNickname: Virgin Mary Clyne (or Virgin Mary 2.0), to Kira's Jesus Yamato.
** Also, [[spoiler:Darth Lacus]], after the closing shot in ''Final Plus'' being a copy of Emperor Palpatine's march in ''ReturnOfTheJedi''.
* FriendToAllChildren
* [[GuileHero Guile Heroine]]
* HonourBeforeReason: Not as much as in Seed, but still present.
* Main/InternetBackdraft (Oh, God, the flame wars started by the mention of her character...)
* IdolSinger: Although she's apparently been out of sight for a few years.
* MagicSkirt: And How!
* TheMessiah: Making her conflict with [[DarkMessiah Durandal]] that much more interesting.
* NeutralGood
* NonSingingVoice: JillianMichaels was Lacus's singing voice in the English version.
* Main/PrincessesPreferPink
* Main/RieTanaka: One of her most popular roles, though [[WordOfGod she later admitted]] that Lacus was [[http://www.animevice.com/news/nyaf08-interview-with-rie-tanaka/25/ the hardest role]] [[http://www.omonomono.com/2008/09/30/nyaf-2008-rie-tanaka-panel/ she played so far.]]
* Main/RonTheDeathEater (The FanDumb often goes way too far in their dislike for her.)
* RoseHairedGirl
* SoundtrackDissonance: In episode 7, she sings "Fields of Hope" to calm the children while the remnants of Junius Seven bombard Earth.
* TechnicalPacifist: Doesn't want to kill anyone, but if she has to, she will sick Kira on you.
* Main/TheWesley, though of course, YourMileageMayVary.
* Main/YamatoNadeshiko (One who [[spoiler: ends up ''ruling the world'']])

!!Murrue Ramius

* TheAragorn
* TheCaptain
* CharacterDerailment (The previous [[TheCaptain captain]] and [[TheAragorn aragorn]] gets bossed around by her former subordinates, more so by Kira? WTF!?)
** It isn't completely out of character for Ramius to accept orders from Kira. He happens to have higher rank than her. Then again, [[SarcasmMode nobody ever heard of soldiers actually following the chain of command]], they are all like our beloved Shinn Auska. Believing strongly that they can break the rules because they are always right.
*** Ramius has been at least taking Kira and Lacus's advice since the end of Seed. It's hard to spot, but Kira actually has one more stripe than she does on his uniform now, making him an Admiral, while [[spoiler: Athrun, post [[HeelFaceTurn defection]] is in a Captain's uniform]]. In some ways her taking their instructions actually makes ''more'' sense this time round.

!!Rau Le Creuset
--> "Everything is born into this world, and eventually, dies. That's the pure and simple truth of it."

TheBigBad of GundamSeed, Le Creuset makes several appearances in Kira, Durandal, and Rey's flashbacks. Many of these expand upon his life and philosophy, helping to further explain his actions in Seed, while also showing his impact on the plot of Seed Destiny.
----
* BigBad: One could honestly make a case for Le Creuset still being the villain in Seed Destiny. Not only did his machinations in Seed screw things up so badly that another war was more or less inevitable, but Durandal's flashbacks make it clear that [[spoiler: his relationship with Le Creuset is a huge motivating factor--perhaps ''the'' motivating factor--in turning him towards villainy and DarkMessiah-dom]]. Similarly, most of [[spoiler: Rey's madness stems from his need to [[CloningBlues relive Le Creuset's life]] without repeating his mistakes]]. In a way, Le Creuset, or his ghost, continues to be TheManBehindTheMan.
* BigBadFriend: To Durandal, before the show began.
* BigBrotherMentor: [[spoiler: To Rey]].
* BlondGuysAreEvil
* CoolMask
* TheCorrupter: More or less responsible for [[spoiler: Rey and the Chairman's slide into villainy. The flashbacks show that he was attempting to make them as [[NietzscheWannabe nihilistic]] as he himself was]].
* TheGwenStacy: [[spoiler: Durandal's]].
* HumansAreBastards: His philosophy, which he frequently shared with Durandal.
* NietzscheWannabe: We already knew Le Creuset was a nihilistic psycho from Seed, but his narration in Episode 29, and Durandal's flashbacks cement his status. He seems to have been making an effort to infect both Durandal and Rey with his philosophy as well.
--> "People like you walk your path believing something you desire is waiting for you. I walk it to confirm that there is nothing there."
* OmnicidalManiac: And the world is more or less living in his shadow now.
* ThePhilosopher: An especially deranged one. He spends his few appearances contemplating life, the world, and [[HumansAreBastards why people are scum]].
* PosthumousCharacter: But for a dead guy, his influence on the plot is pretty significant.
* TheReveal: His face is ''finally'' revealed during one of Durandal's flashbacks.
* SmartPeoplePlayChess: Probably the [[TheChessmaster smartest]] [[ManipulativeBastard person]] in the series, and as his flashbacks demonstrate, he was capable of checkmating Durandal, both literally and philisophically.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: If you didn't feel bad for him in Seed, you will after the flashbacks in Seed Destiny.
