* KickTheSonOfABitch: He [[spoiler:murdered Yuji]], who was a violent and abusive bully to him, though he didn't actually do it because of the abuse. [[spoiler:It was more because he realized that Yuji's abuse and violence came from a place of insecurity, not from a place of sadistic sociopathy. Seeing Rei made him realize that, which made him kill Yuji because he [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness stopped being useful to him as a kindred spirit]].

* {{Bishonen}}: Is so androgynously beautiful, Rei [[DudeLooksLikeALady confuses him for a girl]] when they first meet and can't help but call him cute.

* PrettyBoy: Frequently called this both as a compliment (from girls) and in a derogative fashion (by guys, usually those he's in a physical fight with).

* AnythingThatMoves: The reputation he has to the extent that when Masao confesses his feelings for him, Tatsuya asks Rei multiple times whether or not he's interested despite Rei only ever pursuing women.

* ReallyGetsAround: And he's not hung up about it at all until he [[LadykillerInLove falls for Kira]]. In fact, when he becomes overwhelmed by just how much trauma he and Kira need to work through in order to be together, [[spoiler:he temporarily ends things]] and almost immediately goes back to pursuing casual sex and casual women because it's easier

* UselessBystanderParent: What she is when she chooses to ignore what Kira's step-father has done.

* ForcedFromTheirHome: The explanation given as to why he was not mentioned or shown until later in the story.
* GreenEyedMonster: Learning that Kira is dating Rei makes him drop all facade that he has changed in any way.
* LoveObstructingParents: Tries to do this with Kira and Rei. It doesn't work.

* AlwaysSecondBest: How he felt in comparison to Akihiko given that everyone seemed to adore his younger brother and only tolerated him.
* DrivenByEnvy: Takayuki still hasn't fully come to terms with almost letting his younger brother drown as a kid, but he recognizes that this was likely part of the reason why

* FollowInMyFootsteps: Essentially what he tries to do with Rei.
* IHaveNoSon: Inverted since it is clear that Rei is the one who left on his own and he tries what he can to effectively disown himself. Despite not being able to communicate this effectively, Takayuki wants Rei around.
* MurderByInaction: Averted, barely. Admits to Kira that when he was a teen, he almost let 4-year-old Akihiko drown in a lake. The only thing that prevented this from happening is another guest jumping in to save Akihiko.

* ResentfulGuardian: This is how Rei describes his dad to Kira when he remembers that [[spoiler:he and Sei are not Takayuki's biological children and that they look like their bio-dad. Takayuki himself can't deny that he didn't feel some resentment towards them when he talks to Kira much later in the story and had Akihiko still been alive he likely would've hated them.]] That said, the story goes to length to show that Takayuki genuinely cares about Rei (and Sei) and it is obvious that Takayuki's feelings were [[UnreliableExpositor nowhere near what Rei had assumed]].

* SilverFox: Is described as such by Kira after she unknowingly meets him at an art exhibition where he wanted to purchase her painting of Rei
* SuccessfulSiblingSyndrome: Felt like he could never come close to the popularity and attention his younger brother naturally attracted.
* TheUnfavorite: Takayuki recalls that this is how he felt in comparison to his beloved younger brother. The psychiatrist at the hospital confirms to Rei that Takayuki's father did in fact favor Akihiko over him.

* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Shoko treated Rei and Sei as her lifelines, which is why she would get concerningly overbearing and overprotective of them.
* MamaBear: She thinks she's this, justifying her actions as for the protection of her kids, but in reality...
* MyBelovedSmother: Shoko is more of this. By the time the boys were 4 she still wasn't even letting them leave the house.
* MurderSuicide: [[spoiler:This is what she tries to do with her two sons, but she only ends up fulfilling the latter half as she is stopped from doing the former.]]

* ParentalFavoritism: Was the lucky recipient of his father's love and affection.

* DrivenToSuicide: Why he did it is one of the questions that hangs over Rei's head.
* TheDutifulSon: How Rei saw Sei after they moved back to Japan to live with their father, since Sei seemed to obediently accept their relocation.[[spoiler: And it made him resent Sei for what he saw as blind and unfounded loyalty to a man he was made to believe didn't even like them.]]
* InTheBlood: Apart from looking like his parents, Sei seems to also have inherited his artistic ability and [[spoiler: mental instability]] from his mother. This is discussed by Kira and Takayuki in a later chapter
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: What he tells Rei is the reason why he didn't fight for Shiori when Rei made a move on her. The "beloved" in this case being Rei.
* KnightTemplar: This is how Takemura remembers Sei to be, in contrast to everything Rei has said about Sei up until this point in the story. Takemura never mentions Sei being violent, but he does emphasize Sei's stubborn righteousness and hatred of what he perceived to be injustice. [[spoiler:This is the first indication that Rei's memory of Sei's personality isn't fully accurate and that Sei may have had a darker side to him.]]
* LikeFatherLikeSon: He bears an uncanny resemblance to his [[spoiler:biological father, Akihiko]]. In terms of personality though, [[{{Foreshadowing}}he has much more in common with his mother.]]
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: How Sei portrayed his dependency on Rei, a trait he shared with his mother. Kyoko didn't find it healthy.

* PrettyBoy: As Rei's twin, was equally as physically attractive as he is.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Rei's red, given his more introverted personality.

* SpitefulSuicide: [[spoiler:Turns out this was the real motivator behind Sei killing himself. He even made sure to do it in front of Rei for maximum impact.]]

* InformedAbility: Even though we are repeatedly told that Kyoko's skills are on par with male racers, her performance doesn't really prove that.
* MenActWomenAre: Despite being a lauded racer in the sport, Kyoko reveals that she has this mindset while watching Rei race.

* OvershadowedByAwesome: More likely this, given that Kyoko's racing partner is the racing prodigy Rei. Moreover, the settings on the bike for their race were set for Rei's preference, making it harder for Kyoko to perform to the best of her ability.

* TheBully: Bullied Masao pretty viciously.
* BullyingADragon: Unlucky for him, he found out he picked the wrong guy to bully.
* {{Delinquent}}: As he was still a teen, this also applies.

* {{Jerkass}}: From the little that we learn about Yuji, he comes off this way

* LeaderWannabe: According to Masao, he was more of this. Apparently, Yuji was hysterical, whiny, and not happy unless he was bossing people around.
* PosthumousCharacter: Was killed by Masao in what was determined to be an act of self defense.

* FreudianExcuse: Given what he had to deal with throughout his childhood, his behavioral issues can be excused using this reason.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Rei's an interesting case since to strangers and people he does not like, Rei genuinely does not care about their well-being and whether they live or die, which would normally make him more of a JerkWithAHeartOfJerk. With his friends and loved ones though, Rei is far gentler and understanding, and even his more antagonistic behavior is usually in service to protecting those around him, tipping the scales towards this trope

* DoggedNiceGuy: Rei intuits pretty quickly that part of the reason Tatsuya has been on his case to leave Kira alone is because Tatsuya is actually into her. Tatsuya, however, doesn't make a move on her because back in middle school Kira met him accidentally brushing his hand against hers with blatant disgust. In some ways, the manga deconstructs this approach since at the end, it is the much more proactive Rei who actively pursues Kira that ends up winning her affection.

* ArtistsAreAttractive: A painter of burgeoning talent whose beauty is only dampened by her gloomy disposition.

* LadykillerInLove: What he eventually becomes towards Kira.

* LonelyRichKid: It doesn't get revealed until later in the story that Rei comes from a very well off family. But once it does, he can be seen as this, since it is just him and his dad now, from whom he is estranged at the start of the story.
** This is made especially true when Kira finds out Rei never even told Tatsuya, his closest friend in school, about having a twin brother, let alone that he died.

** TooBrokenToBreak: Learning more about Rei's family reveals that the DeathSeeker vibes Rei starts off with at the beginning of the story is because of this trope.

* PayEvilUntoEvil: This is Rei's philosophy, which puts him at odds with the society he exists in and Kira as well, because she is more inclined to be passive rather than proactive in the face of injustice.
** This philosophy gets deconstructed as Rei learns that rarely can a thing be fixed by applying more violence, especially when you are a kid challenging a person of authority.

* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Kira's and Sei's blue.
** Regarding Sei, this gets deconstructed as [[spoiler:Rei grew up to dislike Sei for this very reason. He found Sei's moralizing self-righteous, especially when Rei finds himself fighting on behalf of Sei more often than not. Most importantly though, being around Sei made Rei more aware of how violent and impulsive he really is and it disgusted him.]]

** GottaPassTheClass: As a consequence of his poor attendance and falling asleep in class, Rei has to put in a lot of effort once he starts regularly attending.

* TraumaButton: Someone jumping off a building nearby triggers a panic attack in the normally unflappable Rei, causing him to pass out from lack of air as that is the same way Sei killed himself.

* WellDoneSonGuy: Rei.

* DoggedNiceGuy: Rei intuits pretty quickly that part of the reason Tatsuya has been on his case to leave Kira alone is because Tatsuya is actually into her. ** Subverted, however since it was on recommendation from the family psychiatrist that Takayuki separate himself from Rei and Sei in order to properly grieve his wife and come to terms with [[spoiler:raising the children born from her affair with his brother all by himself.]]

* TheSociopath: [[spoiler: Sei realizes he is one when he and Rei are living in America as kids and are victims of racist bullying. Because of his more meek nature, he does not typically act out his sociopathic desires on his own, preferring to manipulate and egg on the far more brash Rei into doing his dirty work for him.]]

** OvershadowedByAwesome: More likely this, given that Kyoko's racing partner is the racing prodigy Rei. Moreover, the settings on the bike for their race were set for Rei's preference, making it harder for Kyoko to perform to the best of her ability.

* AmbiguousDisorder:
** Rei's attitude toward violence is both casual in his use of it and explosive in how ''quickly'' he will turn to it, and this has been the case since he was a kid. He also is bored by school and has a hard time sitting still and not moving, pointing to a need for constant stimulation. While this does check some of the boxes for sociopathy, Rei is not shown to be a liar or manipulator, as he is much more prone to dealing with things head on, for better or for worse. He's also able to form genuine emotional attachments to others, like Kira, Tatsuya, and the Katayamas, and feels remorseful for his reckless behavior if it gets those he cares about hurt or in trouble. This all points more to a lack of impulse control than socio/psychopathy.
** Seeing as [[spoiler:both his mother and twin brother were both psychologically unstable people prone to violence, the story seems to suggest that whatever may be wrong with Rei is hereditary.]]

* AmbiguousDisorder: [[spoiler: Her behavior towards Rei and Sei was never really normal, something Rei slowly begins to remember towards the end of the manga. Before trying to kill them, she intentionally pricked Rei's hand with a needle to make the point that when he hurts, she hurts too. All with an [[DissonantSerenity unsettingly calm]] smile on her face.]]

* TheCynic: Explains to Rei how he believes that since the span of human history is filled with war, violence, and blood shed, then [[HumansAreBastards violence is the true human nature]] and condemning killing is actually the strange thing to do.

* CreepyLonerGirl: How she is perceived by most people in school because of her quietness and dowdy appearance.
