* AmbiguousGenderIdentity: As noted elsewhere, the series leaves it vague exactly how Najimi identifies, and their CompulsiveLiar tendencies don't help. [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness One of the few times they ever were specific early in their introduction]] it was used as an excuse to turn down an unwanted advancement from a former classmate, but contradicted what they had told Tadano earlier that same day (wherein they had outright claimed Tadano must be remembering wrong if they thought Najimi was a boy in middle school). Later on while attending a water park, Najimi ends up getting changed in a unisex bathroom (albeit because Tadano was wary of them trying to leer at the girls). Najimi themself flips between using male and female-oriented suffixes and honorifics while the official translation of the series has taken to referring to Najimi with They/Them pronouns. Other character, such as Tadano, have at times noted outright that Najimi's gender is a mystery.

* Leitmotif: In the anime, his commentaries are accompanied with a doorbell sound to differentiate from his normal conversation.

** Due to the constant flipflopping and the way Najimi acts, even Tadano is unsure if Najimi was really a boy until the start of highschool, or if being a boy in middle school was just a phase (it certainly didn't help that Tadano himself went through a "phase"). However by this point it seems that everyone either doesn't care or has given up trying to get a straight answer out of them.

* TemptingFate: Quite cheerily opens the chapter introducing assistant teacher Omojiri telling her they've done their homework but forgotten it; the (at that point) more uptight Omojiri lets this slide despite how flagrant a lie it is. Najimi later tries the line ''again'' (to the point their classmates are exasperated), and the more comfortable Omojiri promptly makes them go and collect handouts from the staff office; ''without running''.

* DropTheHammer: PlayedForLaughs. She's very skilled with the squeaky hammer, and often uses it to enforce discipline. Or punishing Naruse for getting too chummy with Ase (to brutal effects).

** She tells Komi in Chapter 228 that she [[spoiler:will renounce her affections towards Tadano for Komi's sake, but angered by this, Komi doesn't allow her.]]

* DemotedToExtra: After they're assigned to different classes in their second year of high school, Yamai doesn't interact with Komi as much, so she seldom appears in the manga anymore. She is also dropped from their inner circle of friends, which now include Manbagi and Ase instead.

* EyesOutOfSight: Her eyes are almost always hidden behind her long bangs, as a show of her tendency to not get personally involved in the lives of others as she watches them from a distance. It isn't until the end of a short arc about her int he third year that they are (briefly) shown in almost full detail.

* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Has some capacity to feel when "emoi" things are happening near her so she can go and witness them.

That said, her idea of "too far" is very vague and prone to changing, and it's eventually revealed her relative lack of stalking Komi starting in the second year is not for lack of trying. Rather, Kishi Himeko has taken it upon herself to keep tabs on Yamai and physically threaten or drag her away from various attempts to stalk and leer at Komi.
* StatusQuoIsGod: Twice now has Yamai been subjected to some sort of experience that essentially exorcizes all of the "impurity" in her personality. She just reverts to normal by the next time we see her, because RuleOfFunny dictates that she continue to fulfill her designated role as a PsychoLesbian {{Yandere}} in "love"/lust with Komi.

* Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Emoyama Yuragi and Sukida Lily do ''not'' get along despite having been classmates throughout High School and being in the same club, owing to Sukida's tendency to trash anything that isn't yuri-related, whereas Emoyama has broad interests, is a huge shipper for Komi/Tadano and can't stand anyone insulting the pairing. Notably they engage in a rap battle over this.

** She neglects giving friend chocolates to Tadano on Valentine's Day, but it's shown in earlier chapters that it's not due to her not thinking of him, but because between her, Komi, Otori and her own siblings, they absentmindedly ate most of the chocolates they made for the occasion. As a result, they focused on preparing Komi's chocolates from there (this is, added to the fact that between Onemine, Otori, Komi and Onemine's little siblings, they managed to eat all the chocolate Onemine had prepared).

* ButtMonkey: Naruse often finds himself getting injured in rather comical fashion, from tripping into a swim ring at the beach and washed away by the tide, to Isagi beating him up with a hammer whenever he has a moment with Ase.
* CasanovaWannabe: His repeated attempts to act like a charmer always fall flat, as he either gets ignored or weirds others out.

** Naruse's role as Komi's AbhorrentAdmirer was dropped after his introduction chapter while he still maintained his over-the-top narcissism.
** In the chapters after his debut, Naruse turns out isn't the stereotypical narcissist like how he initially potrayed. Instead, he is a rather NiceGuy who genuinely befriends with Tadano and even helps Katai to feel more relax with others.
* TheChewToy: Naruse's debut chapter sees him become the victim of repeated slapstick, all in his bid to ask Komi out on a date.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: His ego can be grating to others, but he's generally a nice guy beneath it. It goes to show that he becomes a personal friend of Tadano. He's not even all that much of a jerk.
** He's also quite nice towards his relatives, completely dropping his narcissistic tendencies.

* MrFanservice: Parodied. He rips his shirt open and poses suggestively at any opportunity possible, but everyone else just finds him creepy and gross.
** Eventually the creepiness is dropped as he gains Tadano, Katai and others as friends, to the point he's able to prompt an entire ''group'' of the first year boys to do topless muscle-man posing during the class' trip to Kyoto.
* {{Narcissist}}: His gimmick, to a delusional degree. Naruse thinks of himself as God's gift to women, but all of his classmates are completely apathetic to his presence.

* ShipTease: With Ase, sharing a budding attraction towards one another ever since the BeachEpisode.

* IdiotHair: Fitting for her {{Cloudcuckoolander}} status.

* DemotedToExtra: After they're assigned to different classes on their second year of high school, Yamai doesn't interact with Komi as much, so she seldom appears in the manga anymore. She is also dropped from their inner circle of friends, which now include Manbagi and Ase instead.

A notoriously air-headed and sluggish classmate of Komi and Tadano. She becomes a personal friend of Komi thanks to Onemine, with whom she shares classes on their second year. Due to said sluggishness, Onemine is her constant companion who takes care of her, eventually becoming best friends.\\\

Classmates of Komi and Tadano who are assigned to the same group as Komi in the class trip to Kyoto. Unlike the rest of their classmates, Mikuni and Sasaki are ostensibly normal girls who make their aim to provide Komi with a fun trip. They are assigned to a different class on their second year, though they remain close friends and confidants of Komi in spite of not being on her inner circle.

Their pun is in their full name, "Osananajimi"(幼馴染), which means 'childhood friend'.

Agari has multiple puns in her name: 'Agari-shou' (上がり症) means 'stage fright' and Himiko sounds like 'hikyou' 卑怯, or cowardice, referring to her easily spooked nature. The first character 卑 also can mean either 'vulgar' (her masochism) or 'gluttonous' (her appetite, foodie nature, and... meat dangos).

Her pun is somewhat complicated: The characters for Yamai (山井) can also be written as 病, which means illness, while another reading of her last name, Ren (恋), means 'love' - thus, lovesickness.

* {{Foil}}: To Nakanaka, who is basically her antithesis. Though they both put up a front in order to interact with people, Nakanaka does not have sinister intentions like Yamai. Nakanaka is quick to point out Yamai's fake behavior and appearance, and both dislikes and distrusts everything related to her. Even though Yamai is better at making friends, Nakanaka is a better person than she is even with her FriendlessBackground. This eventually starts causing chinks on Yamai's armor, and it's shown that Yamai tends not to retaliate against Nakanaka past venomous words, eventually becoming empathetic with Nakanaka's friendlessness on the second year and inviting her to meet her own new friends at class.

The first character for Nakanaka (中々) is also the "Chuu" in Chuunibyou, while her given name, Omoharu (思春) is comprised of the kanji for 'think' and 'youth', referring to the 'youthful delusions' of her quirk.

Her family name, 尾鶏, sounds like Ottori, meaning gentle, ladylike and quiet.

* KindheartedCatLover: In the cat café, pretty much ''all'' of the cats go directly to her, making Komi feel jealous.

Katai's family name (片居) is a homonym for 硬い, or 'hard'.

* SecretIdentity: Sasaki is one for the so-called "Y.Y. Hannya" (Yo-Yo Hannya), the brave masked yo-yo wielding knight who protected Komi from her assailants at the traditional town... except those were actors, it was pretty obvious that it was Sasaki, and on top of that, she spent freakin' ¥4500 on the mask.

* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Even after joining Komi's circle of friends, none of them seem to be particularly fond of her (especially Tadano and Nakanaka, although Tadano is more willing to tolerate her), and she often joins their activities uninvited. Komi herself seems to be (justifiably) wary of [[PsychoLesbian her]]. It's further exacerbated by her stalkerish tendencies and aggressive behavior, and after the second year, she's dropped from the circle.

* EvilPlan: Most of Yamai's focus chapters involve her making an elaborate scheme to fulfill her perverted tendencies such as getting Komi to play Twister with her so she they can be in an awkward position or getting her to perform a back hip circle so she can see her underwear. And though her plans do not always give the results she wanted, it is still a win for her.

* CharacterDevelopment: Manbagi is one of the few characters in the story who actually got over her "quirky" aspect by removing her makeup altogether.

* DemotedToExtra: Manbagi's role has been reduced in the third year since she is no longer in the same class with Komi and Tadano and the love triangle plot is done.

* DropInCharacter: She occasionally visits Komi's second year classroom to play with her, but has largely left her stalker-y actions behind (from what's been shown so far). It's also implied during the Summer Festival that her life doesn't revolve around Komi as much as it did before.

* ShipperOnDeck: They are both active supporters of Komi's pursuit of Tadano. Sasaki also tries to get Katou with Katai.

It's probably the nicest thing you could hope for from someone like her... and her InnerMonologue reveals she only said it to try and get on Komi's good side in the hopes of manipulating her into [[spoiler:breaking up with Tadano]] later on. A chapter depicting her dealing with a cold has repeated fake outs where she is genuinely touched by her friends consideration for her, only for her to revert to angrily wanting them to leave so she can try tog et Komi to enable a sexual fantasy of hers involving a suppository. Evens eeing Nakanaka asleep at her bed side doesn't stop her from going past her to try to chew on the sleeping Komi's hair. The woman can be all but shameless.

* AbhorrentAdmirer: She is [[{{Yandere}} creepily, indecently, and dangerously attracted to Komi]]. What makes it ironic is that her love for Komi is true, but it's unhealthy as all hell.

** Downplayed when it's eventually revealed that Yamai backing off and being better behaved after the first year was not entirely by choice or characterization change. Rather it was also due to her friend Kishi Himeko taking it upon herself to keep her in line through force and intimidation.

* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: In Chapter 312, she tells Komi that while she'll never be able to accept [[spoiler:her relationship with Tadano]], she's willing to concede that [[spoiler:he's not a bad person, and it's at least better that she's dating him than some stranger]]. They silently dissuade her from slipping a roofie to Komi, and when she finally leaves, they get the displeasure of witnessing Yamai slobbering on Komi's teacup.

** Despite his tenuous grasp on reality, he's actually quite smart, getting marks in the 90s on his tests. He's also a fairly good friend, and actually a nice guy despite his ego.

* GirlsAreReallyScaredOfHorrorMovies: Invoked and subverted. Manbagi is a diehard fan of the horror genre, and her favorite pastime with friends consists of horror movie nights. In particular, she finds delight in both being scared and seeing her friends being scared too.
** [[spoiler:However she becomes really scared when she herself is put in a horror setting.]]

* OffscreenTeleportation: Despite how slow she normally moves, she has an uncanny ability to seemingly vanish and randomly appear in another location when someone takes their eyes off her. Keeping her from wandering off to places she shouldn't go when she does this is a recurring issue.

* TheArtifact: DownplayedTrope but Najimi's status as the third part of the ThreeAmigos with Komi and Tadano got phased out in favor of Manbagi's increased prominence. Najimi's quirk of being "Everybody's Childhood Friend" also became less essential to the plot as Komi became more comfortable with her communication skills. Despite this, Najimi still tends to get prominently feature, though now more as [[ComedicReliefCharacters Comic Relief]].

* OutOfFocus: As explained above in TheArtifact, Manbagi slowly supplanted Najimi as the third friend in the ThreeAmigos. Najimi's initial role of helping out Komi getting more friends also started to get redundant as both she and Tadano managed to get their own friends independently.
