!!Main Friends

As of the current publication of the manga, these are the friends of Komi and Tadano who are considered to be in their inner social circle. In an example of a CastHerd, some of these friends were retained from the first year, while others joined later. As of Komi's third year, only Tadano and Najimi have remained in her homeroom class, but these characters still retain their prominence in the series as close friends.

->'''Introduction:''' Chapters 9 through 11 (Manga)
-->''Yeah, they're my childhood friends. More, like,'' '''every student''' ''in this school is my childhood friend.''\

An androgynous classmate and childhood friend to Tadano, Najimi is a "social expert" with hundreds, if not thousands, of friends. Claiming to have had numerous childhood friends due to their parents' constant moving, Najimi used to be in the same class as Komi during their second year of elementary school, Komi being one of the few people Najimi had been unable to befriend, both spending a considerable effort in becoming friends with each other in high school. Najimi is Tadano's class vice-president, though procrastination is Najimi's norm. Najimi remains a classmate of Tadano and Komi during their second year.\

Their pun is in their full name, "Osananajimi"(幼馴染), which means 'childhood friend'.

----
* AchillesHeel: At the start, they found befriending Komi to be too big of a case to handle, and failing caused them to be sick for days.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Since the manga is in black and white, it's not easy to tell, but the colored manga covers reveal that they have gray hair. In the anime, on the other hand, their hair is lavender.
* AmbiguousGender:
** Nobody knows Najimi's real gender. They act like a girl now, but were a guy in middle school. The school uniform Najimi wears has a boy's tie, but a girl's skirt and thigh-highs. Additionally, they described themself as both during the manga, for convenience and to accommodate to the given situation, it appears.
** While they wear somewhat feminine short-shorts while swimming, they also spend the entire time at the pool in a hoodie (even while in the water), hiding whether or not they actually have breasts; however, the anime has them ditch the hoodie and wear a bikini, which shows that they are flat chested. They also wear a gender-neutral jinbei rather than a yukata to the summer festival[[note]]While both men and women wear yukatas, the styles are significantly different between genders (men tend to wear solid colours, while young women tend to wear floral patterns, and men wear narrower obis that usually don't have bows)[[/note]].
** Early in the manga, a delinquent acquaintance asks to date Najimi but is rejected on the basis that Najimi is a dude, despite having told Tadano in the previous chapter that they're a girl.
** Due to the constant flipflopping and the way Najimi acts, even Tadano is unsure if Najimi was really a boy until the start of highschool, or if being a boy in middle school was just a phase (it certainly didn't help that Tadano himself went through a "phase"). However, by this point it seems that everyone either doesn't care or has given up trying to get a straight answer out of them.
* AmbiguousGenderIdentity: As noted elsewhere, the series leaves it vague exactly how Najimi identifies, and their CompulsiveLiar tendencies don't help. [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness One of the few times they ever were specific early in their introduction]] it was used as an excuse to turn down an unwanted advancement from a former classmate, but contradicted what they had told Tadano earlier that same day (wherein they had outright claimed Tadano must be remembering wrong if they thought Najimi was a boy in middle school). Later on while attending a water park, Najimi ends up getting changed in a unisex bathroom (albeit because Tadano was wary of them trying to leer at the girls). Najimi themself flips between using male and female-oriented suffixes and honorifics while the official translation of the series has taken to referring to Najimi with They/Them pronouns. Other characters, such as Tadano, have at times noted outright that Najimi's gender is a mystery.
* TheArtifact: DownplayedTrope but Najimi's status as the third part of the PowerTrio with Komi and Tadano got phased out in favor of Manbagi's increased prominence. Najimi's quirk of being "Everybody's Childhood Friend" also became less essential to the plot as Komi became more comfortable with her communication skills. Despite this, Najimi still tends to get prominently feature, though now more as [[ComedicReliefCharacters Comic Relief]].
* BreakingTheFourthWall: States that Komitani's speech bubbles look like they're part of an inner monologue.
* BrilliantButLazy: Absolutely dreads studying and finds any excuse to get out of it, yet still manages decent grades during exams much to Tadano's surprise.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Najimi early on was introduced as one of the most popular characters in the series well-liked by all of their class. By their second year, while Najimi is still very much a [[TheSocialExpert Social Butterfly]], more characters start expressing annoyance and exasperation at their antics.
* ChildhoodFriends: Najimi's main trait is that they're childhood friends with almost the whole school and many people in other schools. The justification being their parents transferred a lot until high school.
* CompulsiveLiar: Downplayed as it is more a "tendency" to lie, at least if the result will amuse them, and it is treated more for comedy than as a genuine problem.
* CovertPervert: Played with. Najimi attempts to enter the women's locker room at the water park in Chapter 39 before Tadano stops them and makes them change in the mixed toilets instead. Najimi makes another attempt during the school trip, and is stopped by Tadano again. Whether Najimi has bad intentions by doing so, or whether Najimi is a girl and has the right to go otherwise, is up for grabs.
* DemotedToExtra: Once they reach the second year of high school, not only has Najimi's position as a trio with Komi and Tadano been replaced with Manbagi, they also don't hang out with them much anymore, whether it is during outings or even during lunch. This continue in their third year even when they are the only one from the previous year to be in the same class as Komi and Tadano.
* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: Their class would have easily taken the award for best presentation at the school culture festival two years in a row without breaking any rules, but were disqualified both times after Najimi was caught using dirty tactics to make even more money.
* DropInCharacter: They're often seen in the Tadano household, mooching on their hospitality for no apparent reason other than they're bored. Of course Hitohito is usually the only one who both notices and ''cares''.
** Similarly, during Rei's first appearance they enter the Komi household barging into the kitchen (ironically mirroring an earlier effort from Komi to befriend Rei where she took inspiration ''from'' Najimi) where the narration points out that Shouko isn't sure she heard the doorbell; Tadano, naturally in tow to keep Najimi in line, apologises for them.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: In the earlier chapters of the manga, Najimi was shown to be considerably more collected and less bubbly than what is shown in later chapters. Given the way Najimi's attitude started to be increasingly more amplified, Najimi is also a case of {{Flanderization}} that does not have the negative connotations of the trope (it did not detract from their characterization). Najimi's first appearance shows them to have a significantly less cartoony vibe than later installments where their constant smiling is now the standard for all appearances. Najimi was also shown to be more of a pervert, making sexual passes at Tadano from time to time:
-->'''Najimi:''' ''I think that you're so cool, Tadano-kun...'' '''''Gosh, it's so wet now.'''''
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Played for laughs. The Normies consider that even with the gender confusion thing, Najimi would make an ''excellent'' partner in a possible relationship. When the class goes to a water park in the summer, it's shown that Najimi is attractive either way, both as a Bishoujo and a {{Bishonen}}.
* FirstNameBasis: Due to being childhood friends with absolutely everyone, most people refer to Najimi by name rather than calling them Osana.
* {{Foil}}:
** To Setoka Ichou. They are both similarly chaotic, but Najimi mainly does things for their own amusement, while Ichou does her deeds for everyone's.
** She's also one to Komi herself, for Najimi already has countless friends prior to the start of the story, and, unlike Komi, [[MotorMouth has no problem talking up a storm]].
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-Zagged]], Najimi actually has a long list of friends, what with being everybody's childhood friend, but at the same time Najimi's penchant for being TheGadfly tends to annoy everyone as well.
* TheGadfly:
** Najimi has a habit of convincing Komi into doing embarrassing acts under the guise that it'll help with her Social Anxiety. In truth [[ItAmusedMe Najimi mostly does it to be entertained]]. They also tend to find a lot of amusement in putting Tadano on the spot as well.
** Their AmbiguousGender may also be a case of this, as shown in their first appearance where they claim they are a girl and Tadano must be misremembering middle school, only to claim to be a guy later that same day when someone asks them to be their girlfriend.
* TheGamblingAddict: Doesn't necessarily come up too often, but chapter 47 reveals that they love gambling, to the point that Tadano is somewhat worried about their future. Najimi's frequent tendency to prod and test the water is what lands them in trouble with Gorimi senpai whenever the group goes to the school's library, and testing Gorimi's patience has become a sort of game in the group thanks to Najimi. Of course, this gamble in particular never pays off for Najimi in spite of being the instigator.
* HairAntennae: Najimi has two hair antennae sticking out from their head, which may be a visual cue for their AmbiguousGender and general tendency for duplicitious behavior.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Well, as much of a "hero" as you can be in a slice of life manga. Najimi spends a lot of time with many '''many''' other people but we only see them hanging out with the main group because the story is mostly told from Komi and Tadano's perspective.
* HiddenDepths: Albeit extremely friendly and enthusiastic, Najimi keeps their friends and acquaintances at arm's length, and not even their closest friends know Najimi in depth enough to warrant serious conversation from them. A true mystery wrapped in an enigma.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Their ambiguous gender comes back to haunt them during the second year physical examination, where they do better than the other girls but aren't allowed any points since nobody knows what gender they should be tested as.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: It's shown that Najimi, even with their multitude of friends, disliked the fact that they were unable to befriend Komi in the first place, and had made the conclusion that Komi wasn't willing.
* ImplausibleHairColor: Not readily apparent, but the coloured volume covers reveal that they actually have ''grey'' hair. The anime gives them lavender hair which is also improbable.
* {{Irony}}: Loathes studying and aims to procrastinate as much as possible, but Najimi somehow is academically decent.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Although Najimi has a habit of taking advantage of Komi's kindness, they are still mostly supportive of Komi and are never malicious towards Tadano for his friendship with her. Still, it's shown that Najimi is not above making fun of them, and their behavior can often be self-serving and insensitive.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Invoked. It's implied early in the manga that Najimi is somewhat aware of Tadano's "mind reading" capacity, explaining why they are so good at pushing his buttons, at putting him on the spot when it comes to Komi, and [[MomentKiller interrupting them at the worst moment possible]].
** Possibly broken outright when they accompany Tadano's family on camping trip; as Komi is informed that Najimi tagged along (but nobody minds), they cut to Najimi remarking on hurrying things along and that the chapter is already on ''page 9''.
* ManInAKilt: Played for laughs. In Chapter 9, when a surprised Tadano asks why Najimi is wearing a skirt (knowing that Najimi dressed as a boy in middle school), Najimi tells him that it's not weird because "she's a girl" and casually mentions "people from Scotland" before being interrupted by Tadano. Ever since then, it's entirely unclear whether Najimi is a boy or a girl.
* MeaningfulName: Najimi's full name means "Childhood friend", referencing the fact that they are literally ''everybody's'' childhood friend.
* MomentKiller: Najimi does this ''frequently'', more often than not when Komi and Tadano are having one alone together. It's not quite clear whether Najimi does this intentionally, as it happens enough to raise doubts.
* MotorMouth: Played for laughs, especially in the anime where they sometimes are fast-forwarded while speaking.
* MultiGenderedOutfit: To comply with their school dress code, Osana Najimi wears [[NonUniformUniform the shirt, tie, and blazer from the boys' uniform, and the skirt, shoes, and stockings from the girls']]. (This briefly confuses Tadano, as he hasn't seen them over the summer and remembers them presenting male last year, but he adjusts quickly after realising how much he doesn't know about them.) Osana refuses to elaborate on their gender and claims to be a boy or girl when they find it [[HighSchoolHustler convenient]] or [[TheGadfly funny]].
* MysteriousPast: It's not known why Najimi started to dress as a girl in high school, or at what point they started pretending being either a boy at first, or a girl now. Almost nothing is known about their private life or intentions regarding their school life, which is notable for an individual who is considered one of the most important characters in the manga. Given how they're always spending time with friends, to the point where they've joined Tadano's family for their vacations three times (including two New Years one to family gatherings) and will quickly deflect questions about their own family, it's implied they don't have a good home life, or at least one they like.
* TheNicknamer: Najimi is this in the Latin American dub to express familiarity with other characters which in the original was conveyed by calling people by their first names (since in the dub everyone goes by their first names to being with). They usually call Hitohito "Hitomon", and the scene about Komi wanting to be called by her first name is changed to wanting to be called a nickname (Shoukolate)
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: Played with. Albeit Najimi is an admirer of Komi's beauty, Najimi is not nearly as obsessive as other classmates are in that respect, and rarely, if ever, engages in topics like romance and relationships. Najimi doesn't express any need or interest for close relationships or affection, and even turned down a proposal early in the manga.
* OddFriendship: With Komi, based on the fact that ''they don't understand each other'' and are complete antitheses to one another, but they both have slowly come to know that the other has good intentions. Early in the story it's expressed that Najimi has a great difficulty being alone with Komi, as her scantly recognizable feedback puts Najimi at odds. From there, it's shown that Najimi rarely spends time ''alone'' with Komi, making a point of at least having Tadano present. In spite of this ever-present barrier between them, Najimi and Komi managed to become good friends and almost constant companions during their first year in high school. That said, they spend less time together as the series progresses and Komi spends more time with friends who more readily understand her.
* OutOfFocus: As explained above in TheArtifact, Manbagi slowly supplanted Najimi as the third friend in the PowerTrio. Najimi's initial role of helping out Komi getting more friends also started to get redundant as both she and Tadano managed to get their own friends independently.
* PlotAllergy: Najimi is allergic to cats, this being one of the reasons Komi ends up being accompanied by Onemine and Otori when she goes to a Cat Cafe, thus further improving Komi's friendship with them.
* PronounTrouble: Latin American Spanish dub only:[[note]]And likely any dub or sub with no neutral pronouns.[[/note]] Due to Najimi's androgynous nature, the character is addressed as female, as Spanish language doesn't have official neutral pronouns, through Najimi switches between male and female terms at times, while they are addressed as female most of the times out of necessity.[[note]]The Latin American Spanish-subbed version and the Castilian Spanish dub, on the other hand, used ''non-official'' neutral pronouns. Due to likely the controversy about its use, ValuesDissonance between Spain and Latin America, and also for reasons beyond the scope of this trope, it's very likely the Latin American dub decided to go to this way in order to avoid bringing unwanted criticism about its use.[[/note]]
* PunnyName: The word for "childhood friend" is ''osana-najimi''; ''najimu'' is the Japanese verb "to be acquainted."
* RunningGag:
** Najimi becomes "suicidal" every time testing periods approach. Of course, it's always hyperbole, and they always do well on said tests.
** Not only once, but '''twice''' so far has Najimi caused their class to lose the first place of the Cultural Festival rankings. First, because they violated fair-play rules by hogging festival attendees using Komi as a lure, and later, due to ticket scalping for the class's theater play.
** They have a habit of inserting themself into situations along with Tadano and Komi, only to promptly fall asleep; this occurs during a visit to study at Nakanaka's, where they actually jump into the ''host's bed'' to snooze, and ''mid-card game'' during a camping trip.
** They also always join Tadano in his family holidays. It took a while for Tadano to realize their presence.
** Whenever someone asks them of their gender or when Tadano asks why are they joining him on his family holidays, Najimi replies with "Huh" and the person asking responds back with "Don't "huh" me."
* SecretKeeper: Najimi is the only person at class that knows that Tadano used to be [[{{Chuunibyou}} a hardcore Chuuni]], which is something that [[MyGreatestFailure Tadano does not remember fondly]]. The only other people that know are Hitomi, who goes to a different school, and Komi, who is not about to spread any information any time soon.
* SignificantBirthDate: Najimi's birthday is on April 1st (April Fools' Day). Quite fitting.
* TheSocialExpert:
** Najimi is extremely good at befriending people. They can become good friends with anyone they meet within minutes. Komi was the sole exception at first, because Najimi couldn't get her to answer their attempts to be friendly.
** They're also good at getting a conversation going, as Komi and friends discover when Najimi's absent on a trip to the sea; without them around, everybody else is left floundering desperately to find conversation starters.
** Najimi is one of the main reasons Komi met and befriended with most of her classmates in the first year, as Najimi handled almost all of their introductions to Komi.
* TemptingFate: Quite cheerily opens the chapter introducing assistant teacher Omojiri telling her they've done their homework but forgotten it; the (at that point) more uptight Omojiri lets this slide despite how flagrant a lie it is. Najimi later tries the line ''again'' (to the point their classmates are exasperated), and the more comfortable Omojiri promptly makes them go and collect handouts from the staff office; ''without running''.
* {{Troll}}: Najimi is one to stir the waters as much as possible, as they're hyperactive and restless. As such, Tadano knows Najimi to be a complete troublemaker who enjoys playfully toying with people (though not in a malicious way).
** One instance involves them catching a beetle that their other classmates are either freaking out or outright fainting over; they look from the beetle, then to their classmates, and promptly ''charges at them'' with a grin.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Invoked and played with. In middle school, Najimi dressed as a boy, wearing a gakuran and using a masculine honorific; enter high school and Najimi starts dressing as a girl and asking Tadano to use feminine honorifics in conversation. Throughout the manga it becomes increasingly unclear whether Najimi is a boy or a girl, as Najimi is pretty enough to pass as a girl, but used to "be" a boy.
* WritersHaveNoSenseOfScale: Najimi is stated to have '''five million''' friends overall, and they just started their first year of high school! [[https://twitter.com/komisankousatsu/status/1268857600558247938 According to an analysis]], they would have had to have made an average of one new friend every 16 seconds to accomplish this.
* YoungEntrepreneur: One chapter focused on them developing very effective ideas on how to improve the sales of their class maid cafe. Which worked like a charm, but eventually got stopped by their teacher & even got their class disqualified from winning the best class in the process.

[[folder:Agari Himiko]]
!!Agari Himiko
[[quoteright:200:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/agari_visual.png]]

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/YukiyoFujii (Japanese), Creator/SarahAnneWilliams (English), Clara Schwarze (Castilian Spanish), Nycolle Gonzalez (Latin American Spanish)
->'''Introduction:''' Chapters 2 & 14 (Manga)
-->''If I can be Komi-san's'' '''DOG'''... ''then I... I'll do my best! Ehehe...''\

A shy and buxom classmate of Tadano and Komi, Agari has crippling stage fright, a very low self-esteem and has issues with her body image. While she becomes Komi's friend, she actually considers herself Komi's "dog". Agari is the library committee member of Komi's class, her position providing most of her interactions with Komi and Tadano. Agari is also secretly a prolific blogger and a prestigious food connoisseur and critic named [="RamenCore"=], who writes the [=''GuruNabe''=] blog. Agari is assigned to a different class in her second year, though she still accompanies the main cast whenever they go to the library, or go restaurant-hopping.\

Agari has multiple puns in her name: 'Agari-shou' (上がり症) means 'stage fright' and Himiko sounds like 'hikyou' 卑怯, or cowardice, referring to her easily spooked nature. The first character 卑 also can mean either 'vulgar' (her masochism) or 'gluttonous' (her appetite, foodie nature, and... meat dangos).
----
* AnimalMotifs: Invoked. By her own admission, and in general, Agari tends to behave like a nervous, but eager puppy.
* BespectacledCutie: Her glasses highlight how she's an endearing NervousWreck of a NiceGirl.
* BigEater: During the Kyoto trip she is shown eating in 5 different panels. She gets really serious whenever the topic of food comes by, and even has her own foodie blog with a serious following.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: The reason her classmates like her. Agari happens to be very shapely.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Agari's servile attitude towards Komi, her masochism and overall shyness eventually toned down as the story progresses due to her sparse appearances after the class shuffle during their second year of high school. Later appearances focus on her restaurant hopping acumen as a food blogger, though her aunt states that she is still shy enough not to be able to man her food stand.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Somewhat of a klutz, especially when people are watching her.
* DemotedToExtra: Though not to the extent of the first years that shared Komi's classroom (as she appears more frequently), Agari too begins playing a marginal role ever since she enters the second year and is assigned to a class other than Komi's.
* TheDragAlong: In her function as Library Assistant, Agari is usually roped into doing the bidding of either the Library Committee and/or the Student Council, predictably, as a nervous and malleable minion.
* EmbarrassingNickname: [[DCupDistress Meat dango.]]
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: A more nuanced case of this. Agari was the first friend Komi made in her 1st year outside of Tadano and Najimi, so she ended up getting intergrated into Komi's social circle thanks to seniority. Despite this, she was not actually particularly close to any of Komi's other friends so when she and Komi ended up in seperate homerooms in their 2nd year, Agari has now found herself lacking in the friends department. It doesn't help either that Komi slowly became more of a social butterfly in her 2nd year and gained a larger group of friends in her own class.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Agari has very low self-esteem, so much that she doesn't consider herself Komi's "friend", but rather her "dog".
* HiddenDepths: She's a famous online food blogger and critic, and she's amazing at picking out great places to eat when asked. In fact, she drops her normal clumsiness whenever it comes to discussing food.
* HotLibrarian: While not the librarian herself, she volunteers most of her time there and is the most well-endowed of the group.
* MeaningfulName: Her surname is a clear indicator of her more easily frightened nature.
* MsFanservice: From what little we see of it, Agari has a stunningly hot body, with a bust size most men and women would kill for.
* NervousWreck: Gets frightened easily, and often gets stomach cramps when someone stares at her.
* NiceGirl: Agari is kind and gentle, and completely lacks malice.
* NotSoStoic: As the library liaison, she is tasked by Gorimi Senpai to handle paper fan punishment too.
* ObliviouslyBeautiful: She's considerably more attractive than how she sees herself.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When it comes to food and restaurants, Agari is an utter no-nonsense professional and connoisseur, which greatly contrasts with her everyday demeanor at school.
* OutOfFocus:
** Agari arguably gets hits by this hardest of any of the main supporting cast. She was introduced as the first friend outside of Tadano and Najimi that Komi actually makes, but she slowly got pushed out of focused with the introduction of Yamai, Nakanaka and Onemine. Then by time of the second year with her no longer being in Komi's class, she now [[DemotedToExtra rarely appears]]. [[note]]By comparison Onemine, Katou Mikuni and Sasaki Ayami all still get the occassional spotlight chapter where they hang out with Komi while Yamai and Nakanaka have gotten focus on their own VitriolicBestBuds dynamic.[[/note]]
** [[ADayInTheLimelight Chapter 247]] is dedicated to [[LampshadeHanging acknowledging this]]. It turns out that it has been so long since the two have hung out that it's incredibly awkward for the two to start talking again. The two finally do manage to strike up a greeting at the end of the chapter.
* PunnyName: "Agari-shou" means "stage fright."
* SproutingEars: She sometimes has dog ears and a tail when she's acting particularly dog-like.
* ThroughHisStomach: Agari can take all the bad customer service a restaurant can throw at her, but if the food is up to her standards, she'll give a favorable review.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Openly declares herself as Komi's dog after Komi befriends her. She gives a 5 star review to a failing restaurant despite/because of the customer service towards her being horrible, which she enjoyed (along with the food).

->'''Voiced by''': Creator/RinaHidaka (Japanese), Creator/CristinaValenzuela (English), Monica Ortiz (Castilian Spanish), Creator/AnnieRojas (Latin American Spanish)
->'''Introduction:''' Chapters 7 & 23 through 26
-->''Oh yeah, if you touch Komi-san, '''I'll bury you'''''.\

A girl who is aggressively in love with Komi, who is delusional to the point of being considered both dangerous and intimidating. Much to her ire, Yamai is assigned to a different class than Komi in her second year, sharing classes with Nakanaka.\

Her pun is somewhat complicated: The characters for Yamai (山井) can also be written as 病, which means illness, while another reading of her last name, Ren (恋), means 'love' - thus, lovesickness.

----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: She is [[{{Yandere}} creepily, indecently, and dangerously attracted to Komi]]. What makes it ironic is that her love for Komi is (in her own mind at least) true, but it's unhealthy as all hell.
* AlphaBitch: Played with. Albeit her main shtick is that she's a {{Yandere}} [[BitchInSheepsClothing In Sheep's Clothing]], there are aspects of her that fill this trope, such as her attitude towards Nakanaka, and the fact that she comes from an affluent family (as she has the luxury of going to international locales for vacation).
* BitchInSheepsClothing: One of the main schticks of her character, and it's {{exaggerated|Trope}} to boot. Although Yamai [[TheFakeCutie appears like a cute and innocent girl]], the people that know her well are aware she can be heinous whenever she wants, especially if it involves Komi. It's just Yamai is that good at hiding it. Bonus points for often adopting a contralto to further emphasize it.
** When Tadano tries to invite her to be Komi's friend, she whispers him [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech how trash of a person he is for befriending the "class' idol"]], then "tells him in a friendly tone to never speak to her again.
** She becomes pissed at Agari and Najimi when they interrupt her greeting Komi by greeting her themselves. Yamai gives Agari a DeathGlare that scares her away, then takes Najimi away to threaten them to introduce her to Komi.
** When Naruse attempts to introduce himself to Komi, Yamai employs the same "[[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech whisper in your ear how trash you are]]" she used on Tadano.
** Not to mention the multiple times Yamai acts bitchy towards Nakanaka for being Komi's friend and basically a {{Foil}} to her (i.e. not a GirlyGirl).
** However, Yamai can still be surprisingly reliable and affable when the matter doesn't involve Komi in the picture.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** After she herself became Komi's friend, never once again has Yamai tried to do what she did to Tadano to another friend of Komi. Even she realized that she took it way too far, and at the risk of losing Komi's friendship, she just reduced it to taunting and threats... [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope at least until Tadano starts to date Komi]]]].
** Yamai becomes considerably more subdued and sociable once she was assigned to a different classroom than Komi during the class shuffle in their second year of high school.
** Albeit she occassionally attempts perverted stuff with Komi, she comes to realize that she ends up enjoying herself even when the perverted stuff doesn't fly. As such, she gradually becomes more satisfied with less.
** Downplayed when it's eventually revealed that Yamai backing off and being better behaved after the first year was not entirely by choice or characterization change. Rather it was also due to her friend Kishi Himeko taking it upon herself to keep her in line through force and intimidation. When Himeko briefly stops protecting Komi (due to Komi asking her to not put herself in danger), Yamai proceeds to go after Komi to such an extent that Komi has to run away from her.
* ComicalOverreacting: Aside from her ImmodestOrgasm bouts when she interacts with Komi, there are also instances where she faints upon seeing Komi, like when wearing a yukata or a maid costume.
* DemotedToExtra: After they're assigned to different classes in their second year of high school, Yamai doesn't interact with Komi as much, so she appears less often (especially if one doesn't count brief appearances that only serve to act as gags regarding how she is still insanely interested in Komi). She is also dropped from their inner circle of friends, which now include Manbagi and Ase instead.
* TheDreaded: Invoked. After her kidnapping of Tadano, Komi is significantly wary of her. As a matter of fact, Yamai is the main reason Komi is so cautious and protective about unknown people who interact with Tadano, like Katai at first, as they might try to hurt him like Yamai almost did.
* DrivenToSuicide: She apologizes to Komi in Chapter 26 for her actions in the previous two chapters, but misinterprets Komi's response being delivered in writing rather than verbally in such a way that she loses her will to live and tries to kill herself using the same knife she tried to kill Tadano with. Thankfully, the others stop her and quickly explain [[ShrinkingViolet the real reason]] Komi writes instead of vocalizes her dialogue.
** The impact is lessened a little in the anime where, instead of a knife [[SuicideAsComedy she uses chopsticks]].
* EasilyForgiven: Basically got off scot-free after kidnapping Tadano and even managed to join Komi's main group of friends. It's implied that, considering that Yamai is how she is, the alternative would not play out particularly well for anyone involved.
* EveryoneHasStandards: While she can be a [[{{Jerkass}} bitch of a high order]], there are a slew of lines Yamai doesn't cross.
** During Komi's shopping trip that turned into a fashion challenge, she along with Tadano and Najimi decided that Komi couldn't make Agari's childish ensemble work.Likewise, during the pool park arc, she decided to buy Komi a new swimsuit after finding out she was going to wear her school swimsuit. This implies her sense of fashion to be picky.
** She's also shown guarding a frightened Komi from customers wanting to pay her to slap them in the face during their class' maid cafe.
** For the first chapter featuring one of her friends (Onigashima), she actually warned Tadano not to get close to Onigashima when she's angry, showing a degree of concern for him.
** Even though she has expressed a mutual dislike for Nakanaka, it doesn't mean that she wants her rival to be ''friendless''. In the second year, when she sees Nakanaka being isolated and lonely, she extends an olive branch and invites her into her group of friends. This implies that, as long as it doesn't concern Komi, she's more thoughtful and considerate.
*** Prior to this, she's also seen stopping Nakanaka from trying to retrieve her dropped souveneir sword as the train doors close in Kyoto; while it's covered in a layer of mockery, she also queries whether Nakanaka got the sword back in a later chapter.
** It's shown that even with her many faults and overall indecency, Yamai is a surprisingly reliable person. That she is a deranged person doesn't mean that she's disconnected from the world.
* EvilPlan: Most of Yamai's focus chapters involve her making an elaborate scheme to fulfill her perverted tendencies, most often some convoluted method of getting to see/photograph Komi's panties. Her plans never really give the results she wanted, though she still will usually find something positive about the result.
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: The manga often points out her cute and beautiful looks don't reflect her ''disgustingly'' perverse mind.
* TheFakeCutie: She sometimes acts more sweet and innocent than she really is to try to get close to Komi, though these instances mostly fail because she likes to reach a little too far. For example, during the Kyoto class trip, she asks Komi with the most innocent, doe-eyed and unassuming expression she can muster... if she can touch her boobs. This being Komi, of course, she nervously rejects Yamai's advances.
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: Tried invoking this in Chapter 419 [[spoiler:when she eventually contracted a cold, hoping that by messaging Komi, she'd have her all to herself, being nursed and pampered by the latter. Then be on the receiving end of a twisted wish fulfillment via a Komi-assisted suppository shot.]] That got foiled when Komi brought with her additional company.
* {{Foil}}: To Nakanaka, who is basically her antithesis. Though they both put up a front in order to interact with people, Nakanaka does not have sinister intentions like Yamai. Nakanaka is quick to point out Yamai's fake behavior and appearance, and they each dislike and distrust everything related to the other. Even though Yamai is better at making friends, Nakanaka is a better person than she is even with her FriendlessBackground. This eventually starts causing chinks in Yamai's armor, and it's shown that Yamai tends not to retaliate against Nakanaka past venomous words, eventually becoming empathetic with Nakanaka's friendlessness during the second year and inviting her to meet her own new friends in class.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Even after joining Komi's circle of friends, none of them seem to be particularly fond of her (especially Tadano and Nakanaka, although Tadano is more willing to tolerate her), and she often joins their activities uninvited. Komi herself seems to be (justifiably) wary of [[PsychoLesbian her]], and while she claims Yamai is an important friend, she notably usually avoids being alone with her and doesn't seek out interactions with Yamai specifically (her inner thoughts at times revealing she still considers Yamai to be disturbing and potentially dangerous). It's further exacerbated by her stalkerish tendencies and aggressive behavior, and after the second year, she's dropped from the circle due to being placed in another class and Komi getting larger numbers of much more healthy friendships.
* GirlyGirl: Makes herself as trendy as possible, which ended up clashing with Nakanaka after spending time together.
* HeelFaceTurn: Her brief appearance at the end of chapter 23 and her DayInTheLimelight during chapters 24-25 marks her clearly as a villain, but after [[BreakThemByTalking Komi firmly rejected her twisted attempts at getting closer to her]] and being convinced to apologize for her actions in Chapter 26, she loses her villain status altogether. She still remains as much a PsychoLesbian {{Yandere}} as before, though, she's just much less '''psychotically criminal''' about it... unless RuleOfFunny gives her an excuse to issue the occasional comical death threat.
* HiddenDepths:
** As part of CharacterizationMarchesOn, as shown by her friends on her second year, Yamai is more than capable of taking light offense with a stride, and only seems to behave unhealthily in Komi's presence, even extending her hand in help for Nakanaka and introducing her to her friends.
** Yamai is a superb musician, as she has received musical instruction in piano. She's good enough to teach her ''Perro Rabioso'' bandmates about rhythm, harmony and coordination, carrying the band basically on her own.
** As elaborated in ThePerfectionist, Yamai is remarkably helpful whenever anyone starts making mistakes, doing her best to correct them.
* HiddenAgendaVillain: Played with. Her mending her relationship with Tadano has little to do with repentance, but rather has more to do with her own realization that hurting Tadano will only lead Komi to stray further away from her. Furthermore, even though she is still scheming and venomous, Yamai does learn that approaching Komi and her close friends with malicious intent is ultimately counterproductive, and has to accept that she can't and shouldn't get rid of Tadano for her own sake. As the second year of high school comes, she's assigned to a different class than Komi and her contact with Komi is substantially reduced, implying that she will not act upon what she cannot see.
* HisOwnWorstEnemy:
** Because of her treatment of Tadano and her behavior in general, Yamai ensured that Komi might never accept the relationship she wanted to have with her. She is tolerated, but beyond that? Nuh-uh! Even before said event, her berating of Tadano for bringing Komi up casually lost made Tadano withdraw an offer [[{{Irony}} for Yamai to become Komi's friend before he got to say it]].
** Try as she might, she cannot bring herself to [[spoiler:sabotage Komi's first date with Tadano because she won't bear Komi being diminished by her account. As such, very reluctantly, she is resigned to observe from a distance.]]
* IfICantHaveYou:
** Played straight at first. In Chapters 23-25, Yamai kidnapped Tadano under the threat of physical punishment and to get rid of him in order to get closer to Komi, though this blew up on her face after Komi tells her that only she, and not Yamai, would decide her friendships.
** Subverted later on. After the above events, Yamai resorts to keep every other suitor away from Komi by forming the "Komi Brigade" with the Normies. She thus became the reason no one has been able to approach Komi with romantic intent ever since.
** However, the violent intent returns in Chapter 306. [[spoiler:The moment she asks Tadano if they're going out and he confirms such, she takes out a sharpened fish snack to kill Tadano. Fortunately, Komi [[GoThroughMe stands up in front of him]], and Yamai ([[VillainousBreakdown unable to accept it]]) runs away crying.]]
* ImmodestOrgasm: Played for laughs. She gets one almost every time she interacts with Komi, or makes physical contact with her, that is, including sweat, tears, drool... the whole damn package. This serves to illustrate that, at least initially, Komi is nothing more to her than a LustObject, and what Yamai thinks is a significant relationship, is more superficial than she realizes. As a matter of fact, this is one of the main reasons Komi keeps Yamai at arm's length in spite of Yamai's later, more healthy gestures.
* ImprobableWeaponUser:
** The anime replaces her knife with a pair of sharpened chopsticks, presumably as an attempt to lessen the impact of her deranged actions.
** She stops using her knife over the manga's run, replacing it with other sharpened objects such as a dried fish snack in Chapter 306.
* IncompatibleOrientation: She is love with Komi, but Komi is in love with Tadano.
* {{Irony}}:
** Turns out, Yamai sincerely ''does'' love Komi and wants to be with her because through their interactions, Komi tends to bring the best of her and [[NotSoStoic is touched by Komi's sincere affection]], but Yamai's way of expressing it is still unhealthy and alienating as hell. The more Yamai behaves like herself, the more her distance with Komi increases. That sincere love, however, only started after she had kidnapped Tadano and was brought into the realization that Komi ''has'' flaws, somewhat breaking the idealized image she had of Komi.
** Yamai [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech slandered and insulted Tadano]] when he casually brought up Komi in talking to her, not realizing that Tadano approached her to offer a chance to be Komi's friend thinking she could be a good potential friend. Her reaction makes him wisely decide to withdraw the offer.
** In spite of all of Yamai's pretensions, Komi only tolerates her, and while not being judgmental at it, she doesn't think too highly of Yamai.
** Yamai behaves like an obsessive nut whenever the subject is Komi; in Komi's absence otherwise, she's actually more decent and collected. Albeit she is very caustic and not a very good friend, it's shown that Yamai does like her classmates.
* {{Jerkass}}: Don't let her appearance fool you — she's as caustic as sulfuric acid, if not more. Her only grace comes from the shame she feels when Komi makes her realize how badly she behaves, and how better a person she should be to be considered Komi's friend. Some of her actions (e.g. introducing [[TheRival Nakanaka]] to her friends so she isn't alone, warning Tadano to be careful around [[HairTriggerTemper Onigashima]]) imply that [[PetTheDog she can be nicer]] when not dealing with anything Komi-related, but it still doesn't excuse her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: In Chapter 312, she tells Komi that while she'll never be able to accept [[spoiler:her relationship with Tadano]], she's willing to concede that [[spoiler:he's not a bad person, and it's at least better that she's dating him than some stranger]]. It's probably the nicest thing you could hope for from someone like her... and her InnerMonologue reveals she only said it to try and get on Komi's good side in the hopes of manipulating her into [[spoiler:breaking up with Tadano]] later on. A chapter depicting her dealing with a cold has repeated fake outs where she is genuinely touched by her friends consideration for her, only for her to revert to angrily wanting them to leave so she can try to get Komi to enable a sexual fantasy of hers involving a suppository. Even seeing Nakanaka asleep at her bed side out of concern for her doesn't stop her from going past her to try to chew on the sleeping Komi's hair. The woman can be all but shameless.
* KarmaHoudini: Yamai is caught red-handed by Komi and Najimi in the act of kidnapping Tadano. Despite this, and her numerous further misdeeds, Yamai receives no punishment whatsoever. Instead, she becomes part of Komi's friend group, and even receives a friend chocolate from Komi on Valentine's Day. It is important to point out, though, that [[DownplayedTrope Yamai indeed fails to accomplish her goal]], as Komi doesn't allow Yamai to become close friends with her other than tolerating her presence.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: Confidently helps Najimi and Tadano with their summer homework, while belittling them for not knowing the answers. All her answers are ''completely wrong''.
* LonelyRichKid: In her more sympathetic moments, it's indicated she suffers from substantial loneliness outside of school. She's well off enough to live on her own, but rarely sees her family and is shown crying for her mother when she is sick. Her obsession with Komi might even be a strange and twisted symptom of this.
* MeaningfulName: Her name can be read as "lovesick", which translates well into her Yandere nature.
* MortonsFork: Played with. At the time Komi befriends her, it's just as dangerous to herself and others to deny Yamai the friendship that she so desperately craves, so Komi reluctantly accepts her as a friend. Fortunately, Yamai's attitude turns for the better henceforth, as she becomes considerably less ''knife-happy''.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: In her introductionary arc Yamai kidnaps Tadano and threatens to bury him somewhere in the mountains. Later on, when he makes enough noise to get Komi and Najimi's attention, she actually comes at him with a butcher's knife. All in the name of eliminating him from the equation so that she can occupy Komi's full attention.
* MutualEnvy: Yamai and Nakanaka both hate that the other is Komi's friend, though Yamai's hate extends to everyone that gets close to Komi.
* NotSoAboveItAll: It's shown on some occasions that her obsession with Komi can be superseded by her sense of security in ensuring that Komi is okay. Komi tends to bring out the best of her among all the crazy stuff.
* {{Ojou}}: {{Implied|Trope}} and played with. It's hinted that she comes from an affluent family, considering that she has frequent vacations overseas. However, her demeanor doesn't quite fit the trope.
* ThePerfectionist: One of her few virtues, as paradoxical as that may seem. Yamai cannot bear the thought of someone performing an action wrongly, so she'll make her best to correct them if it's within her means.
* PsychoLesbian: Yamai openly proclaims her love of Komi, and thinks perverted thoughts of her. Not to mention her main quirk is being a {{yandere}}. Her efforts to get Komi to enable various sexual fantasies are a RunningGag through the series that arguably only remain funny in that they usually fail and leave Yamai looking more pathetic than evil.
* PunnyName: "Yamai" means "illness", and "ren" is another reading of "koi" (i.e. love).
* RunningGag: Her trying, and failing, to photograph or film Komi's panties. This and other lecherous plans are usually the subject of any chapters that focus on her.
* SituationalSociability: Her apearance suggests that she is socially conscious, and tends to behave more decently whenever the subject of the conversation isn't Komi.
* SlippingAMickey: When Komi pays her a visit in Chapter 312, she offers her a cup of tea, and turns to look at a sleeping drug on the counter as she prepares it. Thankfully, she's dissuaded from using it by the ''very'' disapproving looks she gets from Nakanaka and her friends. Even so, Komi makes sure to avoid drinking it.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: While the rest of Komi's first year classmates are OutOfFocus after entering the second year, Yamai still receives occassionaly focus chapters despite no longer being in the same class as Komi and Tadano. Even Najime, who continues being in the same class as them, doesn't receives as much focus chapters as her. This continues on in the third year.
* StalkerShrine: Her room's chock full of photos of Komi pinned all over the walls, and ''the ceiling''.
* StalkingIsLove:
** Her modus operandi when it comes to Komi. It's the fact that Komi is largely unaware of this aspect of her that allows Yamai to be her friend in the first place (not that Komi isn't aware). If Komi knew all of it, or at the least had a point of comparison, that would mean bad news for Yamai.
** This somewhat receded on the second year, as she's assigned to a different class than Komi, and also, due to the fact that she realizes that taking it too far will only alienate Komi. That said, her idea of "too far" is very vague and prone to changing, and it's eventually revealed her relative lack of stalking Komi starting in the second year is not for lack of trying. Rather, Kishi Himeko has taken it upon herself to keep tabs on Yamai and physically threaten/attack or drag her away from various attempts to stalk and leer at Komi.
* StatusQuoIsGod: A few times now has Yamai been subjected to some sort of experience that essentially exorcizes all of the "impurity" in her personality. She just reverts to normal by the next time we see her, because RuleOfFunny dictates that she continue to fulfill her designated role as a PsychoLesbian {{Yandere}} in "love"/lust with Komi. She's outright become self aware of these events and even actively tries to avoid any impending "purification" (as it interferes with her perverse plans) while acknowledging that if it happens it will be temporary.
* TearsOfBlood: Of the third flavour and a fairly rare case of it being PlayedForLaughs. She begins suddenly weeping blood when Komi asks her to accept that she is dating Tadano, Yamai refusing and instead demanding they break up.
* {{Tsundere}}:
** Played with. From the way Yamai acted towards men, most people such as the Normies and a guest at the cultural festival [[WrongGenreSavvy think Yamai is one]]. Of course, Tadano knows [[{{Yandere}} her true character]] better.
** She becomes this towards Nakanaka in the second year.
* UngratefulBastard:
** Upon hearing that Komi [[spoiler:is dating Tadano]], her Perro Rabioso bandmates spend the whole night trying to console her and basically fall asleep exhausted from hearing her bitching and crying. The following morning, Komi visits her, so she immediately locks them outside on her veranda to have time alone with Komi. They silently dissuade her from slipping a roofie to Komi, and when she finally leaves, they get the displeasure of witnessing Yamai slobbering on Komi's teacup.
** Happens again when she gets sick. After failing to get Komi to come to her house alone (Yamai's bandmates wisely accompany Komi), she spends the rest of the chapter trying to get Komi to give her a suppository while doing everything she can to not appreciate the kindness of her friends (only downplayed by some scenes showing she does feel appreciation toward them, it just gets repeatedly erased by her twisted desires).
* VillainousBreakdown:
** At the end of chapter 25, she rapidly loses her cool as her kidnapping of Tadano is exposed to the object of her lust/affection, and pleads with Komi that she did everything for her sake.
** Likewise, at the end of chapter 306, [[spoiler:after Komi stops her from killing Tadano after he reveals her he and Komi are dating]], she runs away while yelling [[ThisCannotBe her inability to accept it]]]].
* VillainousBSOD: When Yamai tries to justify to Komi her kidnapping of Tadano, Komi shuts her down with the simple and brief declaration that she "will decide [her] friends [her]self". Yamai is completely frozen while everyone but Najimi leaves her apartment, and then she slowly falls to her knees the floor while crying over the realization that she screwed things up '''royally''', having now driven her LoveInterest[=/=]LustObject into hating her.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Nakanaka, having been childhood acquaintances. Though they are shown to greatly dislike each other, Yamai makes an effort in their second year to include her in her circle of friends.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: A perfect example of the trope. It's shown that Yamai is tremendously threatening and dangerous under wraps, as she keeps a 'good girl' guise. However, she's just as self-preservating, so her deranged behavior is usually reserved for her private life, or towards people whose opinions she doesn't care about (like her Perro Rabioso bandmates).
* WithFriendsLikeThese:
** Komi is her friend, but she keeps Yamai at a safe distance. This is due to the fact that Komi is wary of her.
** She's friends with her Perro Rabioso bandmates... but that doesn't mean that she's a ''good'' friend towards them.
* {{Yandere}}: The other main schtick of her character. Yamai acts like a friendly popular girl, but underneath that she's very possessive towards Komi.
** Her [[ADayInTheLimelight focus chapter/episode]], Chapters 23-26 (episode 4 in the anime), has Yamai kidnap and threaten Tadano because he was close to Komi. After Najimi and Komi, who were guests to her house, find and free Tadano, she threatens ''all three [[PsychoKnifeNut with a butcher knife]]''[[note]]thankfully replaced with a pair of sharpened chopsticks in the anime[[/note]].
** This intention returns in Chapter 306, [[spoiler:after Tadano admits to everyone he's dating Komi. Cue Yamai [[DissonantSerenity smiling]] while flatly stating "[[IllKillYou I'll kill you]]" twice, then trying to stab Tadano with '''another''' ''sharpened weapon'']].

A [[{{Chuunibyou}} Chuuni]] girl through-and-through and an acquaintance of Yamai since childhood, Nakanaka is delighted to be Komi's friend due to the fact that the girl considers her Chuuni behavior captivating. Nakanaka is assigned to a different class than Komi on her second year, eventually entering into Yamai's circle of friends.\

The first character for Nakanaka (中々) is also the "Chuu" in Chuunibyou, while her given name, Omoharu (思春) is comprised of the kanji for 'think' and 'youth', referring to the 'youthful delusions' of her quirk.
----
* AnimalsHateHim: While catching goldfish at the summer festival, all the fish instantly head to the opposite side of the pool from where she's standing. Not helped by the fish seemingly following ''Komi'' and her gaze for her attention.
* ChocolateOfRomance: Played with. On Valentine's Day, she gives one to Sonoda, the sleek-haired guy from the "normies" group, saying in not so many words that she likes him. Of course, ''he's wishfully imagining it''.
* {{Chuunibyou}}: Her main trait. She's also another socially awkward girl, but covers it up by acting like some grandiose character.
* CoatCape: She wears her school uniform's blazer this way, and she also wears her jersey this way with her gym uniform. Considering how much of a chuunibyou she already is, it's likely meant to look like a BadassCape so she can look cooler.
* CoolBigSis: To her cousins as shown during the Obon chapter, which is a big contrast to her status at school as a loner.
* EyepatchOfPower: Apparently hid a stye initially, but seems to have become a part of her character act. Several times she's shown without it have the pupil on that eye look strange. [[spoiler:It's revealed she sometimes wears coloured contact lenses on that eye]].
* {{Foil}}: To Yamai. They both have self-aggrandizing pretentions, though Nakanaka's are fantaseous and non-malicious. They are also mutually aware of each other's pretentions, and dislike the other for having them.
* FriendlessBackground: Had no friends after elementary school, and only befriended Komi when she was in high school. She later gains more friends in the second year, thanks to Yamai.
* GamerChick: Owns quite a lot of gaming consoles. Ironically, even when she spends most of her free time gaming, it's shown that she's not a particularly good gamer (though she does have the highest Smash... Swamp Bros ranking of everybody there). It's later shown that she's at the very least better at gaming than her cousins.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Being a {{chuuni|byou}} doesn't do her any favors, so before Komi, and for a while after, she has had no other friends. This makes her markedly lonely, which in turn amps up the chuuni in her to cope.
* InSeriesNickname: Her cousins refer to her as "Haru-nee-chan".
* LoveInterest: To Sonoda from the "Normies", though she's unaware of this.
* MeaningfulName: The kanji in Nakanaka's surname uses kanji that refer to her {{Chuunibyou}} nature.
* MutualEnvy: Nakanaka dislikes the fact that Yamai is Komi's friend, and the feeling is mutual. The main difference is that Nakanaka doesn't mind that Komi has other friends, while Yamai utterly disdains that other people get close to Komi, particularly Nakanaka. Their relationship gets better on the second year, though.
* NiceGirl: When it's not related to Yamai, Nakanaka is actually a pretty nice person who, underneath her chuuni cloak, appreciates her friendship with Komi and the rest.
* ObliviousToLove: Played with. While he doesn't make it apparent to Nakanaka, Sonoda is very much attracted to her and wishes to have a relationship with her.
* {{Otaku}}: Nakanaka is an avid gamer and shut-in, this being one of the reasons she is almost friendless.
* PunnyName: "Naka" uses the same character as the "chuu" in "{{Chuunibyou}}".
* SituationalSociability: Played with. Nakanaka tends to drop the Chuuni when she's overtly emotional, particularly when she's sad, but immediately puts it up again when she's put on the spot. Sonoda also speculates that Nakanaka is not Chuuni when she's at home (which is not the case, she just dresses normally). It's also painfully obvious to her that some of the stuff she says and does is tremendously embarrassing, so she's not full chuuni.
* StaticCharacter: Throughout the series, Nakanaka's personality has remained remarkedly similar, in spite of the numerous traits she has also displayed. That said, she doesn't have it as bad as [[SatelliteCharacter Otori]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Yamai, having been childhood acquaintances. Though they are shown to greatly dislike each other, Yamai makes an effort in their second year to include her in her circle of friends.

A classmate of Komi and Tadano, Onemine is everyone's CoolBigSis. A kind and reliable person, Onemine was initially at odds with Komi's shyness, mistaking it for aloofness. She's the oldest in a family of five siblings, having two brothers and two sisters. Due to her protective nature, Onemine takes care of Otori, and are best friends. Onemine is assigned to a different class on her second year.\

Both her family name and given name can be shortened to nicknames beginning with Nee, referring to her status as everybody's older sis; her given name, Nene, also is exactly the sort of thing a younger sibling would use to get someone's attention in Japanese.

----
* ACupAngst: Openly admits that she's jealous of Agari's chest size because she herself is "flat as a board."
* AngerBornOfWorry: She becomes concerned about Komi possibly taking advantage of Tadano's kindness, so she makes some callous remarks about her to Tadano, which he promptly takes down.
* BestFriend: With Otori, [[ThoseTwoGirls her constant companion]].
* BigBrotherInstinct: One's CoolBigSis schtick also tends to leading to her wanting to look out for her younger classmates. This leads to her assuming that Tadano's "relationship" with Komi must be abusive in nature, due to Onemine assuming that Komi is an IceQueen.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: Whenever she's with Otori, Onemine usually ends up as her babysitter since Otori has a tendency to wander off.
* CoolBigSis: Overlapping with TeamMom, Onemine's main quirk is acting like a kind, caring big sister to everyone else. It comes naturally for her, as she's the oldest of five siblings at home; this also applies to her extended family's children.
* DrillSergeantNasty: Off-screen. In less than an hour, she takes her rowdy younger siblings and cousins, and has them standing at attention and sounding off to her. All eight of them. ''Including the baby.''
* InnocentlyInsensitive:
** She unintentionally badmouths Komi out of concern for Tadano, though he is prompt in putting a stop to that.
** She neglects giving friend chocolates to Tadano on Valentine's Day, but it's shown in earlier chapters that it's not due to her not thinking of him, but because between her, Komi, Otori and her own siblings, they absentmindedly ate most of the chocolates they made for the occasion. As a result, they focused on preparing Komi's chocolates from there.
* {{Irony}}: While she acts as a kind and patient big sister to her classmates, she's somewhat of a hardass towards her actual siblings. Fairly justified since most of them are bratty elementary school kids, so they usually deserve it whenever she yells at or disciplines them.
* MeaningfulName: Part of Onemine's surname, as well as her given name, refers to her being a big sister, a trait she has both literally and figuratively.
* MistakenForRomance: Onemine is the first girl in their year outside of Komi herself who was actually nice to Tadano. This caused Komi to misinterpret that Onemine was romantically interested in him.
* NiceGirl: Onemine's introduction saw her volunteering to help Tadano out with his Class Rep work because [[PetTheDog she thought the other students and faculty were taking advantage of him]].
* NoSell: One of her brothers tries to play a [[AssShove kancho]] prank on her. He ends up stubbing his fingers and gets no more than a grunt of annoyance from her.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** Pillar of kindness and responsibility as Nene is, even she can't resist using Agari's "Meat Dango" EmbarrassingNickname when confronted by said appendages.
** Despite being easily the most level-headed member of the class, even she invariably goes along with the class' adoration of Komi; Komi's title of class goddess was completely unanimous after all.
* OnlySaneMan: She is by far the most normal classmate of Komi and Tadano.
* OutOfCharacterMoment: During their first year Valentine's Day, the usually mindful Onemine opts ''not'' to give Tadano any chocolate in order to avoid undercutting Komi giving him some.
* PrefersGoingBarefoot: Downplayed. While she does wear school slippers for her uniform, she doesn't wear any kind of socks underneath them instead.
* PunnyName: The "one" in her name refers to "Onee-san" (big sister).[[note]]Note that both "one" and "onee" are pronounced "oh-neh," rather than "wun" or "oh-nee" like they would be in English. In Romanji (the standard system for transcribing Japanese into the Latin alphabet), 'e' always represents an "eh" sound, with two 'e's representing a longer "eh" sound.[[/note]] Her given name, Nene, refers to the casual form, Nee-san, or the colloquial Nee-nee.
* TheReliableOne: This is a flag she holds for everyone at class. Her presence alone provides a sense of security for all the people she meets. She'll be there for them even before they get a chance to ask her for a favor.
* ShipperOnDeck: She is among the first to notice that [[spoiler:Komi likes Tadano, and supports them]].
* TsurimeEyes: They highlight her "big sister" image.
* ThoseTwoGirls: Usually seen together with Otori in school.
* WardrobeFlawOfCharacterization: She wears no socks with her shoes and school slippers, a custom commonly associated to JapaneseDelinquents which, in Nene's case, marks her as a supremely confident character.
* WhatTheHellHero: When Onemine starts discussing the possibility that Komi looks down on people, Tadano simply and roundly states that ''[[NoJustNoReaction that is not true]]''. [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness This is so uncharacteristic of him]] that Onemine is taken aback and immediately regrets bringing it up.
* WolverinePublicity: It's become a RunningGag that occasionally in chapters that otherwise doesn't feature Onemine in the plot, Tomohito Oda will include a random panel of Onemine performing some mundane unrelated task just to feature her. The fact that this started happening after Onemine placed 3rd in the series' popularity poll probably isn't a coincidence; some of the panels randomly featuring her do, however, [[AuthorAppeal have notes stating that she has nothing to do with what's going on and Oda just wanted to draw her in a certain pose]].

A notoriously air-headed and sluggish classmate of Komi and Tadano. She becomes a personal friend of Komi thanks to Onemine, with whom she shares classes in their second year. Due to said sluggishness, Onemine is her constant companion who takes care of her, eventually becoming best friends.\

Her family name, 尾鶏, sounds like Ottori, meaning gentle, ladylike and quiet.
----
* BestFriend: She becomes Onemine's, and it's implied that she goes to her house rather frequently, judging by Onemine's siblings' familiarity with Otori.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Does everything at an extremely slow pace, and doesn't seem to take anything seriously. She also seems to space out sometimes for weeks.
* CoolBigSis: Onemine's younger siblings adore her, as she's not as strict as their older sister.
* TheDitz: She is both airheaded and drowsy, which is a rather potent combination on her.
* TheDragAlong: She rarely does anything by her own volition, as her reaction time doesn't give her an opportunity to say or do anything otherwise, and that's assuming that she's following the conversation. Aside from that, she requires constant supervision, which goes to explain why she becomes a friend of [[TheReliableOne Onemine]].
* EyesAlwaysShut: Hasn't been shown with them open as of yet.
* HiddenDepths:
** During the physical exams, her slow-paced nature makes her absolutely atrocious at most physical activities (she has a 50-meter dash time of ''21 seconds'', roughly triple the time of some people!), except for the flexibility test, where she scores a full 10 points. Turns out she used to be a ballet student.
** Otori is surprisingly perceptive, but not quick enough to notice whether it's timely or appropriate to mention that which she perceives. In layman's terms, she reads the room, but not fast enough.
* IdiotHair: She has a prominent strand of hair that always sticks up, which is fitting for her characterization as a ditzy {{Cloudcuckoolander}}.
* KindheartedCatLover: In the cat café, pretty much ''all'' of the cats go directly to her, making Komi feel jealous.
* MeaningfulName: Ottori, with two t's, means "easygoing".
* NiceGirl: She is very sweet, and not a single bad thing would come out of her mouth.
* NoSenseOfDirection: Gets lost incredibly easily.
* OffscreenTeleportation: Despite how slow she normally moves, she has an uncanny ability to seemingly vanish and randomly appear in another location when someone takes their eyes off her. Keeping her from wandering off to places she shouldn't go when she does this is a recurring issue.
** During the New York arc, two students ask why Nene and Kaede always hold hands. Nene demonstrates that when she lets go, Kaede vanishes into thin air.
* {{Ojou}}: In Chapter 241, it's revealed that she comes from a wealthy family, and she lives in a large mansion.
* SatelliteCharacter: Arguably the least developed of the main supporting cast, her primary role tends to be the classmate Onemine most looks after.
* {{Sleepyhead}}: She almost falls asleep while ''actively walking''.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: Apparently, her parents are just as airheaded as her, as shown by the fact that, when she gets lost in the airport during their obon trip, her father needs to go to security, and her mother is searching the second floor, despite the fact that Kaede is standing out in the open, only a few meters from where her father is, calling out for them, with absolutely no one nearby her to block their view.

The son of a family that runs a martial arts dojo, Katai is a classmate who was absent for more than six months due to an accident,[[labelnote:*]]It incapacitated him for a couple of weeks tops, but due to his shyness he was unable to build up enough courage to go to school.[[/labelnote]] Katai strove to make friends with his classmates by dedicating his absent time to exercising and grooming to the point of appearing like a delinquent so that he wouldn't be bullied at school. Though sweet and delightful in his mind, Katai comes off as tremendously intimidating as a result. In time, he becomes close friends with Tadano. In his second year, he remains a classmate of both Komi and Tadano.\

Katai's family name (片居) is a homonym for 硬い, or 'hard'.

----
* AffectionateNickname: Manbagi calls him "Makocchan" and "Makocchi".
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Played with. Katou Mikuni, a dainty, girly, bespectacled friend of Komi, likes him very much. He couldn't be any further away from "bad", though.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: His sister Ai treats him as such (in spite of being younger), as she sees him as a wimp and her chew toy, making him exercise under threat of violence, which he takes with a surprising stride. It's implied that he looks the way he looks because of her own delinquent behavior.
* TheApprentice: Thinks of himself as one to Komi, whom he'd called master after he found himself befriending Tadano (more of it comes from Tadano's empathy).
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: The reason he treasures Tadano so much. His long absence left him friendless and his appearance alienated his classmates until Tadano extended a hand to him.
* TheBigGuy: He's about two to three heads taller than most of his classmates.
* CrushFilter: Ends up seeing Tadano like this after Tadano catches him when he slips on the ice trying to figure skate. This only contributes to the ambiguity of how he feels about Tadano.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: During grip strength test of the second year physical exams, his grip strength is rated as [[ReadingsAreOffTheScale immeasurable]], because he ends up gripping the gauge so hard that ''he breaks it''.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Like many of the first-years, he was introduced in the first pages of the manga, being embraced by his sister.
* EntertaininglyWrong: His vision of Komi is of someone who barely communicates, but is otherwise a master at it, prompting him to follow on her example and consider her as [[TheMentor his mentor]]. [[ShrinkingViolet Obviously, he couldn't be more wrong.]]
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: During the second year summer uniform contest, the male judge gives him a perfect ten, the second highest score he gives (which is saying something, since he gave Naruse, the only other male to compete, a 1, and the highest score was Komi, who got ''[[BrokeTheRatingScale 1 million]]'').
* FaceOfAThug: He looks like a delinquent and his attempts to appear friendly often [[TheUnsmile backfire]]. Like Komi, though, he's just a shy guy who wants friends. Hilariously, he and Komi are scared of each other.
* {{Foil}}: To Komi. They are isolated and have communication problems for opposite reasons. While Komi has been isolated by her striking beauty, Katai has been isolated due to his intimidating aura. They both have skewed impressions of themselves and both consider Tadano their first and best friend.
* GagPenis: During the Kyoto trip, the reactions of the delinquents in the bath make it pretty clear that he's quite well-built in all areas, including, ahem, downstairs.
* GentleGiant: Katai is tall, intimidating and built like a wall. He's a sweetheart, though.
* HeirToTheDojo: Played with. Albeit he's the son of a dojo master, it's not known whether Makoto has had martial arts instruction from his dad, as he is one of the least aggressive characters in the story. Even his exercise routines are spotted by his sister Ai. However, it's hinted that he might be indeed instructed, as his bulk and body density suggest that he has done more than just exercises.
* HiddenDepths:
** In spite of his intimidating looks and towering size, Katai is one of the sweetest people anyone in the story could ever hope to meet.
** The chocolate he gives to Tadano for Valentine's Day is homemade, complete with cute packaging.
* HomoeroticSubtext: Pretty much every Katai chapter. He just wants to be closer friends with Tadano, but his thoughts and actions make it look like he has a crush on him instead.
* JapaneseDelinquents: Invoked and subverted. He has both the appearance and the demeanor, yet he's anything but. He is by far one of the nicest guys anyone can come across. However, it's implied that his appearance and build are due to his hard-nosed younger sister, who is an ''actual'' delinquent.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: His parents are just as intimidating, shy and tongue-tied as he is.
** Chapter 186 reveals that ''every man in his family'' is like this, resulting in a room full of big, burly men in intimidating suits, seated before their family's patriarch... and absolutely every single one of them is terrified and unable to speak.
* MeaningfulName: His name double puns in the fact he looks like a hard nosed delinquent, when he's actually a nice guy, not unlike Komi.
* MistakenIdentity: A group of juniors mistaken Katai for Komi, who they thought to be a big shot delinquient leader, and occasionally challenge him in order to take over the school. Due to PoorCommunicationKills, no one is able to correct them.
* NiceGuy: He is a very sweet young man... who looks like he can chew steel bars for breakfast, and is built like a pillar of the Parthenon.
* NoSocialSkills: After getting sick during the first week of school, Katai ended up getting cold feet about starting school late so he wound up skipping the first two semesters of classes. Spending all that time holed up in his home, doing nothing but training to [[FaceOfAThug change his image]], unfortunately also did a number to his social skills, as he now has a hard time actually interacting with his classmates.
* OddFriendship. Based on his appearance alone, it's surprising that he has friends to begin with, yet he is a doting friend to Tadano, Naruse and Komitani. He also considers himself Komi's apprentice in communication, [[EntertaininglyWrong not knowing that she's]] [[ShrinkingViolet even worse at talking than he is]].
* OutOfFocus: Despite being in the same class as Komi & Tadano in the 2nd year, he is this due to having him primarily being in Tadano's clique and Manbagi being a more serious love rival.
* OxymoronicBeing: A guy who looks like he can punch through concrete whose every attempt to befriend outside of the main group fails, because he still comes off as intimidating.
* PunnyName: "Katai" can mean "hard" or "straight-laced."
* ShrinkingViolet: As he is a NervousWreck, he can barely string two words together, and he's bashful by nature to top it off. Beyond Tadano, he has barely been able to make any friends.
* UnknownRival:
** Oblivious to the fact that Komi views him as a [[MistakenForGay rival for Tadano's affections.]] Katai actually views her as his Social-Skills master who's trying to help him become better friends with Tadano.
** Suteno Gorou of the first year Four Heavenly Kings seeks to fight and defeat Katai, believing him to be the head delinquent of the school named Komi. Unfortunately for them, Katai has no idea who is this junior and why is he often challenging him.
* VocalDissonance: Played with in the anime; when speaking out loud, his voice is deep and menacing, which fits his intimidating appearance. However, during his inner monologues his voice is higher and friendlier, which shows how [[FaceOfAThug despite his threatening looks]], he's really a timid guy who wants to make friends.

Classmates of Komi and Tadano who are assigned to the same group as Komi in the class trip to Kyoto. Unlike the rest of their classmates, Mikuni and Sasaki are ostensibly normal girls who make their aim to provide Komi with a fun trip. They are assigned to a different class in their second year, though they remain close friends and confidants of Komi in spite of not being on her inner circle.
----
* TheAce: Sasaki, at yo-yo, where she has competitive ranking in specialized tournaments.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Like many of the other characters in this list, both of them can be spotted in the background of various scenes in the anime long before their introduction.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Katou is infatuated with Katai and is actively pursuing him. It gets to the point where she buys a romantic manga series with a character that looks ''just like him''.
* BestFriend: They become this to each other due to the class trip, and they become Komi's closest friends and most personal confidants.
* BrokenPedestal: A positive subversion in regards to Komi. After spending the day with her during the class field trip, they admit that the real Komi is different than the image of Komi they had in their minds, and they like her all the more for it and become her close friends.
* ClosetGeek: Sasaki is an avid Yo-Yo player, but she finds it embarrassing due to the fact that it's normally treated as something that appears immature and should be just a flight of fancy.
* ControlFreak: Katou is a stickler for the schedule she draws at Kyoto, so much that she gets in a spat with Sasaki when she gets too overbearing.
* DidNotSeeThatComing: They make it their goal to impress Komi during their field trip, though they are surprised how sincerely kind she is. They both admit that she shattered the image they had of her.
* HasAType: Katou likes delinquent-types like Katai.
* KillerYoYo: Downplayed with Sasaki. Her yoyo skills are impressive, but she never uses it to attack anyone, not even the actors
* LegacyCharacter: Katou has the life goal of becoming the very first female Shogi professional in Japan, as she is the granddaughter of a famous 4-dan player.
* MeaningfulName:
** Katou Mikuni's name is based on the real-life famed Shogi player Katou Hifumi, and Komi and Sasaki speculate that she's his granddaughter in-universe, or at least, to the in-universe equivalent. Her grandfather appears in chapter 186, viewed from the back, and he does bear a resemblance to Katou Hifumi, in terms of size and haircut.
** Sasaki Ayami's name is an anagram from Asamiya Saki, the protagonist of ''Manga/SukebanDeka'', who happens to use a Yo-Yo as a weapon.
* {{Nice Girl}}s: Both girls proceed from the basic goal of making Komi happy. That says plenty regarding the kind of people they are.
* OddFriendship: They are two ''very'' different girls who became friends almost circumstantially due to their grouping with Komi for the class trip, and turned out to be almost inseparable.
* OnlySaneMan: They are among the least quirky characters in the story and alongside Manbagi, they're Komi's most grounded friends and close confidants.
* OpenSecret:
** Both Komi and Katou are well aware that Sasaki ''loves'' Yo-Yos, in spite of her efforts to hide it.
** Komi and Sasaki are very aware of how much Katou likes Katai, no matter how much she denies it.
* PassionateSportsGirl: They both are. Sasaki is one for competitive Yo-Yo, while Katou is one for Shogi, both aiming to become professionals in their competitive fields.
* PunnyName: They are the exceptions to the rule. They are the only two characters in the story whose names are not puns.
* RedOniBlueOni: Katou's the calm, calculating blue to Sasaki's outgoing, cheerful red.
* RunningGag: Katou always goes into SuspiciouslySpecificDenial and starts girly-punching Sasaki and Komi every time they bring up her infatuation with Katai.
* SatelliteCharacter: A positive example. They gravitate around Komi because they happened to be the very first friends Komi made without the help of either Tadano or Najimi, but they seldom interact with other friends of Komi. They are also the first friends of Komi that are just mere mutual acquaintances with Tadano.
* SecretIdentity: Sasaki is one for the so-called "Y.Y. Hannya" (Yo-Yo Hannya), the brave masked yo-yo wielding knight who protected Komi from her assailants at the traditional town... except those were actors, it was pretty obvious that it was Sasaki, and on top of that, she spent freakin' ¥4500 on the mask.
* ShipperOnDeck: They are both active supporters of Komi's pursuit of Tadano to the point of getting totally invested in Komi's love life cause it's just so interesting. In one instance, news of progress was enough to give Katou the energy to win through an otherwise unwinnable shogi match.
** Sasaki also tries to get Katou with Katai on multiple occasions.
* SmittenTeenageGirl: Katou usually behaves like this whenever Katai is brought up.
* StatingTheSimpleSolution: They are closer friends to Komi than any others she had made to that point (except Tadano, and later Manbagi), precisely because they made the effort of ''actually becoming her friends''.
* TaremeEyes: Sasaki has these.
* ThoseTwoGuys: They become best friends and are almost always shown together.
* TsurimeEyes: Katou has these. They emphasize her pushy side.
* TheUnSmile: Sasaki has a rather terrible and striking "coy/playful" face, which is sometimes pointed out by Katou.
* {{Yakuza}}: Played for laughs. When Katou invites Komi and Sasaki to her house, its traditional appearance and affluent atmosphere make them think that Katou's family belongs to the mafia. It's actually that her family is wealthy and traditionalist.

A {{Bishonen}} with delusions of grandeur, Naruse is under the impression that the world pays more attention to him than it actually does. Naruse remains a classmate of Komi and Tadano during his second year, becoming part of their inner circle of friends.
----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: In the anime, he can be seen in the background long before his debut appearance in the manga.
* AffectionateNickname: Manbagi calls him "Naru".
* BetaCouple: Aside of the Tadano/Komi/Manbagi love triangle, Naruse and Ase's relationship is the next most prominent relationship during the second year. [[spoiler:In Chapter 361, Ase reveals that she's been dating Naruse nearly as long as Komi and Tadano have.]]
* BoisterousWeakling: He's terrible at sports, easily scared and often suffers amusing injures, but even in such moments of weakness he still acts like he's God's gift to mankind.
--> '''Naruse''': ''(trembling while gripping Ase's shoulder)'' [[BlatantLies There's nothing that can scare me.]]
* BreakingTheFourthWall: Declares himself to be the (handsome) protagonist of the series in his introduction.
* ButtMonkey: Naruse often finds himself getting injured in rather comical fashion, from tripping into a swim ring at the beach and washed away by the tide, to Isagi beating him up with a toy hammer whenever he has a moment with Ase or does something weird. Downplayed in that this rarely ever gets to him, and outside of one scene clearly meant to not be literal (wherein Isagi beating him reduces him to pixelated gore) he doesn't suffer anything worse than a small bump on the head that vanishes shortly after. Her attacking him over Ase also largely ceases once they start going out.
* CasanovaWannabe: His repeated attempts to act like a charmer usually fall flat, as he either gets ignored or weirds others out. That he is genuine with Ase means that she becomes quite receptive to his charmer behavior afterward.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** Naruse's role of seeking Komi to be his girlfriend was dropped after his introduction chapter while he still maintained his over-the-top narcissism. Much later he would state he still sees her as girlfriend material, but he never actually tries anything with her again regardless.
** In the chapters after his debut, Naruse turns out isn't the stereotypical narcissist he initially seemed to be. Instead, he is a rather NiceGuy who genuinely befriends with Tadano and even helps Katai to feel more relax with others. Downplayed in that Komitani revealed he was a good person back at the end of said debut.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Maintaining his ego often involves jumping to some rather outlandish conclusions about why no one is paying attention to him.
* TheDandy: He concerns himself almost exclusively with the image he projects to others. Just as the trope states, he both avoids, and is awful at, physical activities.
* EarlyBirdCameo: He appears in the manga's introductory splash page, being the last named character featured there that was formally introduced.
* EveryoneHasStandards: That he's narcissistic doesn't mean that he is selfish or unkind. This is one of the reasons he and Ase start being attracted to each other.
* HiddenDepths:
** Despite his tenuous grasp on reality, he's actually quite smart, getting marks in the 90s on his tests.
** Naruse is also a fairly good friend, and actually a nice guy despite his ego. He thinks everybody should love themselves as he loves himself. This attitude helps give his friends, especially Katai and Ase, more confidence in themselves.
** Naruse initially became friends with Tadano as a consolation prize in his bid to still try and woo Komi. This ulterior motive was actually dropped and overtime he actually became legitimately close friends with Tadano.
** He legitimately comforts Ase during the test of courage, when she refers to herself as gross and sweaty, telling her she deserves to love herself. Even his classmates comment that he was pretty cool.
*** Later chapters establish that he actually has a crush on her.
* IMeantToDoThat: After Komi turns down his request to exchange contact info, Naruse immediately course corrects and asks Tadano for ''his'' instead. The chapter ends with the narrator mentioning it was Tadano who made a new friend.
* {{Irony}}:
** For a person that is as narcissistic as he is, Naruse is for some reason a really fun friend to have around.
** Naruse's attempts to insert himself into becoming Komi's boyfriend ends up failing...only for him to end up joining ''Tadano's'' clique instead.
** Naruse is indeed handsome enough to warrant self-congratulation, but his obnoxiousness keeps people at bay. He'd have considerably more success if he weren't so self-conscious about his appearance, or if he weren't such a show-off.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: His ego can be grating to others, but he's generally a nice guy beneath it. It goes to show that he becomes a personal friend of Tadano. He's not even a jerk, as while he does tend to believe he is the greatest thing in any room he walks into, he never uses that impression to belittle other people and will praise them almost as readily as himself. Even his biggest critic, Isagi, admits he is not a bad guy, just weird.
** He's also quite nice towards his relatives, mostly dropping his narcissistic tendencies.
* LargeHam: Constantly strikes flamboyant poses, even when nobody is looking. His poses are so distracting that during their study session, Gorimi smacks him even though he hasn't made a sound.
* MeaningfulName: His name is a play of the word "narcissist", which is his entire gimmick.
* MrFanservice: Parodied in that he wants to be this and has the looks for it but his execution often leaves something to be desired. He rips his shirt open and poses suggestively at most any opportunity possible (he even poses as he sleeps). He is attractive but his sheer lack of shame means most everyone else just finds him odd or gross.
** He gains Tadano, Katai and others as friends, and is able to prompt an entire ''group'' of the first year boys to do topless muscle-man posing during the class' trip to Kyoto. Outside of this though his stripping habits still often get perplexed looks (or simply get ignored).
* {{Narcissist}}: His gimmick, to a delusional degree. Naruse thinks of himself as God's gift to humanity, but most of his classmates are completely apathetic to his presence.
* NiceGuy: In spite of being self-aggrandizing, Naruse never belittles anyone else, and he is a doting and kind person to his friends, not averse of singing their praises. This is the main reason Ase likes him.
* OddFriendship:
** He and Komitani practically represents the friendship between and introvert and extrovert.
** How did he and Katai first become friends? When Naruse invites Katai and a few other classmates to make [[TestosteronePoisoning muscular poses]] during their trip to Kyoto.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: He tends to only drop his narcissistic behaviors in very meaningful moments, such as when he and Ase confess they like each other. At such times he becomes quite soft spoken and even lacking in confidence (notably turning off the face cam to his phone so Ase can't see how he looks after the confession, though she still catches a glimpse of it).
* PrettyBoy: He is a notably handsome young man with an ego to accompany it... and with a complete lack of self-awareness.
* PrimalFear: Not that he will admit it, but he is very much afraid of heights, unable to bring himself to approach the windows of a tower he takes Ase to the top of.
* PunnyName: "Naruse Shisuto" is a play on the word "narcissist".
* RememberTheNewGuy: His introduction has shades of this.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: His grandfather is just as much of a narcissist as he is.
* SituationalSociability: He behaves his very best and kindest whenever Ase is around.

A classmate who serves as Naruse's "narrator". Snarky and irreverent, he accompanies Naruse to bring him down from his high horse. It's later revealed he's also fluent in [[GyaruGirl Gyaru]], and acts as Manbagi's "translator". He, alongside Naruse, remains a classmate of Komi and Tadano, and becomes part of their inner circle of friends, eventually becoming a [[BreakingTheFourthWall 4th-Wall-breaking]] commentator for the manga at large with equal sarcasm peppered in.
----
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: In the anime, he can be seen in the background long before his debut apperance in the manga.
* AffectionateNickname: Manbagi calls him "Shakku".
* BestFriend: He is Naruse's, in spite of spending about 90% of the time making fun of him.
* BreakingTheFourthWall:
** His speech bubbles are a good example. He also comments that Naruse's position as a "handsome protagonist" is a delusion of Naruse's.
** He also provides translations for Manbagi's slang, even when it's in her thoughts, and even when she's at home. He shows up in other situations where he's not present, too, like Komi's midnight snack or Obon trips.
* ChickMagnet: During the beach trip two unnamed girls show interest in him, likely due to his cute appearance.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder:
** He's always accompanying Naruse to poke fun at him.
** He also shows up to translate Manbagi's slang.
* DeadpanSnarker: Komitani is [[TheStoic expressionless]] and everything that comes from his mouth is snarky.
-->'''Manbagi:''' (thinking) ''"Why'm I geting discluded!? Did I, like, screw somethin' up!?"''
-->'''Komitani:''' '''[''Your face.'']'''
* HiddenDepths:
** Despite him primarily following Naruse to make fun of him, he does outright tell Tadano that Naruse isn't a bad person, and asks Tadano to give him a chance, showing that he does actually like Naruse to some degree.
** He's also surprisingly competent at many things (though not to the same extent as Shousuke or Masayoshi), such as snowboarding and video games.
** When he ends up paired with Manbagi during the New York trip, he admits he's known about [[spoiler: her feelings for Tadano]] for a while now and noticed [[spoiler: she'd tried to rig the box they were drawing lots from to decide on their pairs, but kept quiet about it so as not to spoil whatever she was planning]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: In the anime, his commentaries are accompanied with a doorbell sound to differentiate from his normal conversation.
* MeaningfulName: His name shares the "Komi" that Komi herself has, but in this case refers to his status as Naruse's GreekChorus. It also sounds like an {{Engrish}} version of "commentator".
* MetaGuy: Komitani is made of this trope. He is the narrator for a number of characters for comedic effect, and for some reason, he's sometimes able to exploit the comic medium for his own benefit. There's even a significant possibility that ''he's the manga's narrator himself'', as the narrator shares his DeadpanSnarker sense of humor.
* NotSoStoic: A couple of examples, although he never drops his expressionless face in both:
** When a bug enters the classroom in Chapter 141, he's seen hiding under a chair, still providing commentary as the bug flies straight towards Naruse.
** He's noted as trembling slightly while watching a horror film with the rest of the group in Chapter 179.
* OutOfFocus: Even after he starts hanging out with Komi and Tadano, Komitani lacks screen time (beyond his fourth wall breaking cameos) and only has a single focus chapter for him. In fact, he interacted with them the least out of their inner circle. Then in his third year, he is now in a different class with them.
* PunnyName: Another pun on "Komi". In this case, the nuance is "commentary".
* ShipperOnDeck: He starts nudging Naruse in Ase's direction.
* ShipTease: With Manbagi. He's the only one who can understand her gyaru slang, and Chapter 288 is dripping with tension on his end. Manbagi is also one of the few people who can get him to smile.
* WhenHeSmiles: For one, he has a mouth; and when he actually smiles, the entire room can't recognize him because it's that breathtaking.

A GyaruGirl that went into the deep, ''profound'' end of the Gyaru spectrum, Manbagi becomes Komi and Tadano's classmate during their second year, becoming isolated due to her unusual appearance. Due to them helping her overcome this obstacle, she becomes a personal friend to both and Komi's closest and dearest female friend in her second year. After Komi and Tadano, Manbagi becomes the series' [[{{Deuteragonist}} third protagonist]] for the latter half of the story.
----
* AscendedExtra: In a sense. In the first chapter we see her in, she's just another weirdo who sits next to Komi to emphasize how few of Komi's friends are in their new class, but soon she gets [[ADayInTheLimelight a few chapters introducing her]] and she slowly becomes Komi's closest friend.
* AffectionateNickname:
** Her first-year group of friends calls her "Bagiko".
** Her family calls her Rumi.
* BeautifulAllAlong: Underneath all that makeup lies a gorgeous girl.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe:
** This is the reason she becomes Komi's friend and has remained at her side ever since;
** This is also the main reason why [[spoiler:Tadano starts winning her affections]].
* BestFriend: She becomes Komi's very best female friend after [[spoiler:their mutual PlatonicDeclarationOfLove in Chapter 228.]]
* BettyAndVeronica: Betty to Komi's Veronica, as she's more grounded and outgoing.
* BrokenTears: She's so painfully lonely when she begins the second year that she stops tasting her lunch. When she's ignored one too many times in class, she breaks into tears, Komi and Tadano have to lead her out and she throws up en route due to the stress she's going through.
** [[spoiler:After seeing Komi's onstage confession to Tadano in Chapter 223, Manbagi tries to keep her composure but breaks down and weeps silently alone in a stairwell having just ran away from both Komi and Tadano when they asked her [[ArmorPiercingQuestion "Are you okay?"]] in Chapter 225. The dams burst when Komi finds her and tries to comfort her in Chapter 226.]]
* BuxomBeautyStandard: It's quickly noticed and praised by other characters that she is almost equal to Agari in bust size, and she often wears outfits that emphasize this.
* CannotKeepASecret: Due to her earnestness, the girl's terrible at subtlety and quietness:
** She unwittingly gives out to the whole class that both [[spoiler:she and Komi like Tadano. She was under the impression that she was being secretive, [[NoIndoorVoice but was so loud about it]] that the rest of the class didn't even have to put two and two together.]]
** When prompted to check out [[spoiler:Kawai's looks]], she cannot possibly make herself more obvious in front of her just to get a glimpse, even though Manbagi's actively trying to pretend she's not.
* CharacterDevelopment: Manbagi is one of the few characters in the story who actually got over her "quirky" aspect by removing her makeup altogether, though she does briefly regress at the start of the third year.
* CosmeticCatastrophe: Manbagi's schtick is that she puts on an excessive amount of makeup. But because of her outlandish makeup, none of Manbagi's classmates would approach her. Taken to the logical extreme when Tadano mistakes her for a zombie when Manbagi's makeup runs. She later abandons this and switches to a more natural look.
* CrushBlush: [[spoiler:Whenever Tadano unwittingly praises her.]]
** [[spoiler:Manbagi becomes ''feverish'' when Tadano holds her hand and saves her from Najimi's zombies during a test of courage.]]
* DemotedToExtra: Manbagi's role is reduced in the third year since she is no longer in the same class with Komi and Tadano and the love triangle plot is done. This is downplayed when she starts getting focus chapters that showcase her friendship and budding romance with Wakai.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Over time, Manbagi's role in the story slowly increased in prominence to the point where she started to get several spotlight chapters from her own perspective. The Culture Festival chapters of the second year have essentially driven home the point that she's now the third main character.
* FailedASpotCheck: Didn't notice that Komi didn't vocalize her words and instead wrote them in a notebook until the latter wrote the exact same thing to her. Manbagi's reaction is less than graceful.
* FirstNameBasis: With Komi in Chapter 234. This is after Komi started calling her "Rumiko-chan" in Chapter 228.
* {{Foil}}: Towards Komi. Komi finds out that they're not so different, both desperately wanting friends. In Manbagi's case, she resorted to an [[GyaruGirl outlandish makeover]] in hopes of getting attention and is shocked to find herself being ignored in her new class. [[spoiler:To add insult to injury, they both like Tadano]].
* GyaruGirl: Starts off as the [[MeaningfulName Manba]] variety, with tanned skin and excessive makeup.
* HeroicBSOD: Suffers a nervous breakdown as she starts to consider the possibility that she'll be alone for the rest of her life, causing her to StressVomit.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation:
** She still has doubts about her being Komi's friend, as she considers herself below the privilege. According to her friends from her first year, she's a complete wallflower and a person who has considerable trouble making friends in spite of her sweetness and her kindness.
** She tells Komi in Chapter 228 that she [[spoiler:will renounce her affections towards Tadano for Komi's sake and due to her believing she has no chance against Komi anyway, but angered by this, Komi doesn't allow her.]]
** Even well after the [[spoiler:love triangle]] is amicably resolved, Manbagi still carries the belief she is inferior to Komi in most every respect, that it is only natural that she lose to her.
* HiddenInPlainSight: Played for laughs. She's so happy at being Komi's friend that she doesn't notice that Komi communicates through her notebook ''weeks'' after they become friends.
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: The best thing that Manbagi can ever do is to ''lay off the damn mascara''. It doesn't do her any favors and it's the source of her problems.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends:
** As shown in Chapter 132, Manbagi has a hard time making friends in her new class because her classmates avoid her. To add insult to injury, her friends from the previous year ended up in a different class and she's too shy to come and visit them. The chapter ends with her becoming friends with Komi, however.
** Later chapters show that she at least has a group of friends outside of class who are very grateful to Komi for looking after her.
* ImportantHaircut: [[spoiler:She cuts her hair on the first day of her third year, [[LampshadeHanging actually admitting to Tadano that it was because he rejected her.]]]]
* InsecureLoveInterest: [[spoiler:After learning that Komi also has feelings for Tadano, Manbagi starts to resign herself to the idea that she will wind up as the RomanticRunnerUp. Both Takarazuka and Komi end up talking her out of this defeatist mindset.]] Still, [[spoiler:when she finally does confess her feelings to Tadano and even after he says yes, she still can't accept it and convinces him [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy he'd be happier with Komi instead]].]]
* {{Irony}}:
** Played for laughs. For a person that can dress in a combination of flora elemental, Masai warrior, and high school student, she is considerably shy and even worse for that matter, she's one of Komi's most "normal" friends. She eventually drops her makeup altogether, though.
** She loves horror movies and witnessing her friends getting scared at them when they watch them together; [[spoiler:however, if she's put in a horror situation herself, she turns into jelly]].
* ItsPersonal: PlayedForLaughs. During and after her [[spoiler:final confession to Tadano]], she playfully chides on him for being self-deprecating, as he's unwittingly undermining the fact that she started liking him for his many virtues to begin with.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: On several occasions:
** [[spoiler:She intends to give up her pursuit Tadano for Komi's sake, but Komi doesn't let her;]]
** [[spoiler:She tries to confess to Tadano on the class trip to New York, but backs off mid-way through it;]]
** Finally, [[spoiler:she does confess to Tadano and gets a yes, but she makes him admit that he likes Komi, and in not so many words, she tells him that he has a way better chance with Komi than he thinks.]]
* LonelyTogether: Komi appeals to this when she becomes Manbagi's friend, as like her, Komi was wallowing in a sea of loneliness before she met Tadano herself. It's so heartfelt and poignant that Manbagi basically becomes Komi's best friend in the second year and an almost constant companion to her.
* LoveEpiphany:
** In Chapter 194, Manbagi finally admits to herself that [[spoiler:she likes Tadano and might start to actively pursue him]]. The problem is most of their close friends notice too, as she was a little too giggly with him at the Summer Festival, while also noticing [[spoiler:the conspicuously absent Komi from the equation]].
** Chapter 206 is dedicated to [[SmittenTeenageGirl Manbagi gushing over]] [[spoiler:Tadano]] and trying to kiss his photo.
* MatchmakerCrush: In a particularly cruel twist on this, [[spoiler:she thinks Komi and Tadano are perfect for each other, but as she's also in love with Tadano, it just makes her feel inadequate in comparison. And despite being the first of the two to dare confess to him, ''successfully'' at that, she just couldn't abide by the realization that a big part of the reason why Tadano accepted her feelings is that [[InsecureLoveInterest he's completely convinced he's got no chance to be more than a friend to Komi when Manbagi knows for a fact that not true at all]] and pushed him to confess his feelings to Komi, which almost immediately resulted in their RelationshipUpgrade.]]
* MeaningfulName: Her name is basically a pun that translates to mean "Beautiful [[GyaruGirl Manba]]." Fittingly, Manbagi is one of the few characters outside of the Komi family who will get [[GaussianGirl panels that play up her attractiveness]].
* MirrorCharacter: Much like Komi, Manbagi is considered one of the most beautiful girls in class. They have considerable trouble making friends and communicating, they are both sweet and curious, making fast friends with each other. [[spoiler:They even like the same boy.]] In Chapter 237, they find another thing they have in common: [[spoiler:they utterly suck at flirting, as collectively, they have less romantic experience than a newborn baby.]]
* NeverMyFault: In her first few chapters, Manbagi is under the impression that the reason everyone in class has been avoiding her is because Tadano told them that she vomited in class when it is actually because her excessive make up creeps everyone.
* NiceGirl: She's a sweetheart, turning out to be one of Komi's most grounded friends.
* TheNicknamer: When she gains confidence with her friends, she starts giving them [[AffectionateNickname cutesy nicknames]] like "Naru" (Naruse), "Shakku" (Komitani), "Shibii" (Ase), "Makocchan"/"Makocchi" (Katai) and "Zukacchi" (Takarazuka). However, out of both affection and respect, [[LastNameBasis she always calls Komi "Komi-san"]] instead of "Shokotaso", the nickname her friends have for Komi. However, this eventually changed in Chapter 234, where she formally starts calling her Shouko.
* NoIndoorVoice: So loud when she's flustered that [[spoiler:she spills the beans on the fact that she and Komi like Tadano to the rest of their class.]]
* ObliviouslyBeautiful: Much like Komi, she's also unaware of how beautiful she is... that is, without her makeup.
* RespectedByTheRespected: In Chapter 228, Komi tells Manbagi that [[InformedAttractiveness she considers her prettier than herself]].
* SheCleansUpNicely: Once she removes the gaudy hair accessories and makeup, Manbagi is shown to be quite the looker and attracts a lot of her classmates, [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer including girls]].
* ShrinkingViolet: She's markedly shy, and her friends describe her as a total wallflower. Though it's not as bad as Komi's case, Mabagi doesn't have the courage to reach out on her own.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: She loves Tadano because he is so kind and reliable.
* StraightMan: As she befriended Komi during the second year, she takes on the role of reacting to the unusual situation and classmates like a normal person (especially during the Quiet Library Game, where even Tadano is already used to it).
* TenderTears: When Komi asks her to be her first friend in their second year.
* {{Tsundere}}: Towards Tadano, starting in Chapter 136. Manbagi expresses anger after getting embarrassed when Tadano compliments her appearance without her over-the-top makeup. The chapter ends by implying that she is developing a crush on him.
** [[spoiler:She acts ''tsun tsun'' towards Tadano when the two of them undergo a test of courage. Becomes ''dere dere'' when she starts crying from fear and Tadano helps her escape. At the end of the chapter, Manbagi's face is bright red.]]
** In Chapter 194, it's implied that [[spoiler:she drops the act altogether]], as she admits to herself that [[spoiler:[[LoveEpiphany she likes Tadano]]]].
* UnknownRival: [[spoiler:Prior to Komi's confession in Chapter 223, both her and Komi were unaware that the other likes Tadano as well.]]
* YouDontLookLikeYourself: When she dons her Gyaru makeup a second time, Komi doesn't recognize her at all, even though they sit right next to each other.
* YouKeepTellingYourselfThat: In Chapter 228, Komi points out that Manbagi [[spoiler:has a bigger chance of being with Tadano than she thinks after Manbagi herself fails to realize that she had just said that she had thought of the possibility of dating Tadano and having to give up her time with Komi, betraying her feelings for Tadano without realizing it. This cues Komi of the fact that Manbagi cannot possibly be happy if she were to give up her affection for Tadano, and that she won't abide by Manbagi doing this for either her own sake or for Komi's.]]

--> ''This totally sucks... A sweaty girl like me will never be popula-R!!!'' (said as she jumps away from a schoolmate)\

Ase is a classmate of Komi and Tadano in their second year of high school who befriends them and Manbagi. Ase suffers from hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), which causes her considerable embarrassment and makes her avoid physical contact with her classmates. She then becomes part of Komi and Tadano's inner circle of friends.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Manbagi calls her "Shibii", from her name Shibuki.
* ArtisticLicenseBiology: Ase sweats so much that she can drench a wool vest... which is a water-resistant fabric. Hyperhidrosis is usually focused either on the armpits and/or on the hands and feet, which at Ase's rate and scope would leave her dehydrated in no time.
* BetaCouple: Aside of the Tadano/Komi/Manbagi love triangle, Naruse and Ase's relationship is the next most prominent relationship during the second year. [[spoiler:Ase confirms in Ch. 361 that she and Naruse been dating nearly as long as Komi and Tadano have.]]
* HatesBeingTouched: Played with. It's not that she hates it ''per-se'', but rather she dreads to be seen as disgusting due to being drenched in sweat.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Invoked. Among all the people that Komi befriends, Ase is the only person who finds herself disgusting.
* HiddenDepths: She has quite a bit more spine than expected when it comes to romance. Notably she [[spoiler:boldly scolds Naruse for bragging about how intimate they have supposedly been, and back when they confessed to each other she was pushy enough with getting Naruse to say the specific words out loud that her friends even declared her to have a surprisingly sadistic side in such matters.]]
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: She wears thick clothing to hide her excessive sweat... which makes her sweat even more.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: A couple of examples:
** Since she avoids physical contact, jumping while recoiling if someone is going to touch her, this comes off as her being disgusted by other people; in reality, she's disgusted with ''herself''.
** She douses Najimi with a bottle of antiperspirant when the latter tries to touch her.
** As she usually douses herself in deodorant/antiperspirant, she doesn't quite notice that Manbagi and Komi think that she's taking too much of the deodorant they lend to her.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Or rather like mother, like daughter in this case. Chapter 256 shows that Ase's mother has the same issue with sweating her daughter does.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Naruse has provided her with great boosts of confidence, [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe this being the reason why she starts to like him]].
* LoveConfession: In Chapter 361, [[spoiler:after having gone on a date (Ch. 354) at the same time as Komi and Tadano did (Ch. 320), Ase reveals to her friends that she had previously confessed to Naruse, he reciprocated, and that they're currently dating.]]
* NiceGirl: As Naruse points out, Ase is selfless and kind.
* ObliviouslyBeautiful: While on the beach, she's seen as a rather beautiful girl by some ogling boys, but they don't approach her precisely due to her sweat.
* OnlyOneName: She's initially referred to exclusively as "Ase-san", which is presumably her last name. Her full name is later revealed to be Ase Shibuki.
* OverlyNervousFlopSweat: Albeit Ase is sweaty to begin with, she turns on the waterworks whenever she gets nervous.
* PunnyName: "Ase" means "sweat" in Japanese.
* ShipTease: With Naruse, since the BeachEpisode.
* TenderTears: [[spoiler:When a thankful Isagi hugs her in spite of her germaphobia, finally recognizing each other as best friends]].
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Naruse tells her that she is a person who deserves to be loved, and has nothing to be embarrassed about.

A classmate of Komi and Tadano from their second year class, Isagi is a tremendously fastidious girl who is a germaphobe. Isolationist, confrontational, and dutiful to a fault, Isagi intends to join the student council as president. Albeit she's initially not in Komi and Tadano's inner circle, she's on amicable terms with them due to Ase Shibuki, and later becomes closer with Komi's friends.
----
* AffectionateNickname: "Kyokochi", by Manbagi. Of course, as Kometani mentions, no one else calls her that.
* AscendedExtra: She first appears when the rest of the second-year classmates are introduced in Chapter 188, only getting a single panel from behind. Later, she becomes the focus of the election arc and becomes a part of Komi's main circle of friends.
* BestFriend: To Ase, albeit this was not the case at first from her perspective. After everything is made clear, she becomes Ase's fiercest and most loyal friend.
* ChildhoodFriends: Played with:
** She's been with Ase since elementary school, and Ase considers her a friend, but it's not a mutual feeling. [[spoiler:It's then double subverted when it's revealed they used to be mutual friends, but when Isagi started becoming obsessed with cleanliness in middle school, she thought she'd inadvertently caused Ase's sweat issues and couldn't forgive herself for it, no longer considering herself her friend. Thing was, she didn't tell ''Ase'' that, so ''she'' thought they were still friends. They finally make up at the end of Isagi's introductory arc.]]
** She also knows Najimi, just like everybody else, but Isagi doesn't have a good impression of them.
* TheComicallySerious: Regardless of whether she's happy or sad, Isagi sports a nigh-unbending scowl, so much that even her friends sometimes think that she's two steps away from pulling a ScrewThisImOuttaHere. Turns out, she's more cordial than what her face shows.
* DontYouDarePityMe: She dislikes hand-me-downs, and rejects having to deal with Najimi and Komi for her campaign because she equals their help to cheating. She later relents because they want to help her regardless.
* FaintInShock: In Chapter 361, she's knocked out cold when [[spoiler:Ase reveals that she's been dating Naruse for a while.]]
* {{Foil}}:
** To Ase. While Ase keeps people at bay because she thinks ''she's'' filthy, Isagi keeps people at bay because she thinks ''they're'' filthy. [[spoiler: Turns out, the two issues are directly related.]]
** To Rei, at Komi's first impression, who thinks they're the same, deeming that Isagi keeps people away from her in spite of wanting to be their friend.
* FriendlessBackground: At the outset he has no friends, and the classmates that know her, she considers acquaintances at best. [[spoiler:Subverted when it's revealed she was friends with Ase in the past, but felt she hurt her unforgivably and couldn't consider herself her friend anymore.]]
* FriendshipMoment: Isagi's most heartfelt moments come whenever she shows that she cares about her friends more than her neuroses.
* HiddenDepths:
** She's a considerably kinder and more selfless person than she appears to be at first glance.
** Albeit she seems quick to anger, while retaining her stone face, she actually takes the offenses in stride. She's tremendously curt, but she's nowhere as angry as she looks.
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: Isagi doesn't get close to people because she thinks that they'll grow to hate her eventually, in a self-defeatist attitude. Komi dispels this notion, as she states that she'd never hate a person who is considering her feelings even if it's detrimental to them.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: She keeps people at arm's length and behaves rudely, but it's implied that her fastidiousness gets the better of her and she doesn't really want to hurt anybody.
* ImStandingRightHere: Albeit surprisingly unlikely being how she is, Isagi is a firsthand witness to [[spoiler:Manbagi's pursuit and later surrendering of Tadano's affections]], being the very first person who offers her consolation after all is said and done (not that [[spoiler:Manbagi]] was doing a good job keeping it a secret to begin with.).
* ImportantHaircut: As shown in the character images, ever since she became the Student Council President, she's worn shorter hair than in her early appearances.
* InsistentTerminology: It's absolutely a coincidence that she turned up to Manbagi's ski-day trip. She [[BlatantLies absolutely didn't grill Ase for information about it]]. At all. Its. A. ''Coincidence''.
* ItsPersonal: Invoked and subverted. When inquired by Komi about what's her problem with [=AseXNaruse=] happening in Chapter 291, Isagi states that she knows that Naruse is not a bad guy, but that he's an idiot.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** She carries an old lady who is stuck at a road crossing during a green light, much in spite of her extreme dislike of being touched.
** She is unapproachable not because of hate towards people, but rather because she is thinking of their feelings and doesn't want to hurt them by being the way she is towards them.
* NeatFreak: To a fault. Isagi is so obsessed with cleanliness that she puts it above her dignity and social standing, seriously hurting those.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler: She blames herself for Ase being so self-conscious about her sweat, as she called her "filthy" in an instance where Ase greeted her by touching her shoulder. This happens to be the reason Isagi doesn't consider Ase a friend, as she knows she hurt her, and the reason Isagi keeps her distance from everyone]].
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: She's one of the few people Komi meets that doesn't fawn over her.
* NotSoStoic:
** She's flattered at the notion that Komi insists to be her friend, not to help her with her campaign if she doesn't want to, but because she wants to cheer her.
** In a study session at Manbagi's house, she concedes to having some tea and snacks, and Jenga breaks after vehemently saying no to everything.
** She rushes to give a disheartened Manbagi a CooldownHug right after [[spoiler:she gives up on her affections on Tadano and sends him to Komi.]]
* OddFriendship: With Manbagi, as they're starkly different from each other. Isagi is not one to dispense kindness easily, and it's evident how important Manbagi becomes to Isagi that she's not a strange to said rare kindness.
* {{Ojou}}: {{Implied}}. Albeit it's not shown that much, and it's not defined that it affects her personality in any way, Isagi's family is affluent.
* PerpetualFrowner: She ranges from disinterested to scowling, not showing anything beyond. However, she's considerably more accessible than how she shows herself.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Played with, as it's delivered without malice. [[spoiler:Ase delivers one to the whole school body, alphabetizing everything Isagi has done wrong, but at the same time humanizing her and making the audience sympathize with her, a person that otherwise comes off as anal and unapproachable. Her sincere delivery ends up winning Isagi the election. This earns Ase a hug from Isagi, who now recognizes her as her BestFriend]].
* TheReliableOne: Aside from the fact that she's the StudentCouncilPresident, she's a surprisingly stalwart and doting friend towards Manbagi in particular, as she's an unlikely witness to [[spoiler:Manbagi's unsuccessful pursuit of Tadano.]]
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Played with. Most of the time her eyes are obscured by the reflection of her glasses. However, contrary to the trope, she's not hiding any sinister thoughts or personality traits. She's just stone-faced.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Isagi is not above removing and throwing away her shirt in front of boys if it gets dirtied.
* ShippingTorpedo:
** Isagi is not okay with [=AseXNaruse=] happening. At first, she prevents Naruse from giving a water bottle during the sports festival, but later in the cultural festival, she goes ape on him when he tries to remove some confetti from Ase's hair. What makes it more irritating for her is that it doesn't work, and Ase is more than delighted with Naruse's gesture, which makes Isagi double down on him.
** In Chapter 257, it's shown that while she still greatly dislikes that Ase likes Naruse, she has somewhat accepted it as a fact and acknowledges in Chapter 291 that Naruse isn't a bad person (although she still calls him an idiot).
* StoicSpectacles: Played with. Her initial introduction presents her wearing glasses that highlight her as appearing callous and unapproachable. However, as Komi finds out, she's more caring than she appears.
* SkewedPriorities:
** [[spoiler:When Ase grills her in her campaign speech to the school body, she takes the podium to correct her... for telling everyone that she's a fan of a certain celebrity, when she actually likes another. Even the audience wonders why she even bothered focusing on that in particular]].
** This becomes a RunningGag with her, as it's shown that she has little patience for certain things, but not about the things her friends think that are going to irritate her.
* TerrifiedOfGerms: If someone as much as grazes her, she'll throw the clothing item out the window of the classroom. She's even willing to expose herself when ridding herself from the tainted clothing.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: A rare example where the character does it to herself. [[spoiler:She cannot bring herself to call Ase her friend because she once called Ase "filthy", and feels this was the trigger that led Ase to become self-conscious about her sweat. Ase forgave her, but she cannot forgive herself for doing something so awful to a person that cares about her so much, and resolves never to allow anyone close to her, lest she'd hurt them in the same manner]].
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Isagi does not consider Ase her friend not because she doesn't want to, but because [[spoiler:she thinks that she hurt Ase in a fundamental manner and caused her the neuroses related to her sweating disorder, so she doesn't deem herself worthy of her friendship. Fortunately, the arc ultimately made them put this behind and accept each other as best friends.]]
* WhenSheSmiles: As detailed above, Isagi's default look is that of a frown; during her introductory story the first real sign of this breaking is when she and Ase talk about their childhood mishaps planting rice and a full page is dedicated to her laughing. Najimi, of course, then ruins the mood by trying to capture this lighter, softer look in a photo, which comes out blurred and more than a little unfortunate-looking.

->'''Introduction:''' Chapter 216 (Manga)
-->'''''SO EMOI!'''''\

A very dramatic girl who is a lover of all things "emoi" (short for "emotional"), meaning anything that moves her heart. She lives to watch such things, and enjoys it even more if she can experience them herself. Initially a recurring gag character introduced in the second year, she joined Komi and Tadano's third year class and received proper focus chapters as a character, eventually becoming a true friend of Komi.
----
* DramaQueen: An unusually subdued example, she is very dramatic but mostly in her own thoughts and feelings, with the occassional outward burst of emotion from the normally quiet girl causing her some isolation from people who find her a bit disconcerting. She also focuses on the positive emotions of drama rather than relishing negativity.
* EyesOutOfSight: Her eyes are almost always hidden behind her long bangs, as a show of her tendency to not get personally involved in the lives of others as she watches them from a distance. It isn't until the end of a short arc about her in the third year that they are (briefly) shown in almost full detail.
* HiddenDepths: Her intense interest in other people means she knows a great deal about most of the people around her, even if she has next to no actual conversations with them.
* LikeMotherLikeDaughter: In addition to them looking physically similar, her abilities and interests take directly after her mother's own.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Has some capacity to feel when "emoi" things are happening near her so she can go and witness them. She is also somehow capable of simply "absorbing" all the relevant details of the emotional thing that happened even if she wasn't there.
* ShipperOnDeck: Of Komi and Tadano, as she relishes the feelings the two's heartfelt moments give her. She is very adamant about not directly interfering in the relationship though, becoming a full out depressed mess and leaving school for a time when she fears she has accidentally harmed the couple's relationship progress by causing a AccidentalKiss.
* SitcomArchNemesis: Emoyama Yuragi and Sukida Lily do ''not'' get along despite having been classmates throughout High School and being in the same club, owing to Sukida's tendency to trash anything that isn't yuri-related, whereas Emoyama has broad interests, is a huge shipper for Komi/Tadano and can't stand anyone insulting the pairing. Notably they engage in a rap battle over this.
