The main character of the series. Jim Cutlass is a redheaded lieutenant and Civil War veteran from Louisiana. After returning from the war, he leaves the care of his plantation in the heart of his cousin and sweetheart Carolyn, in favor of rejoining the army. However, he soon runs into a plot targetting his cousins plantation among others, led by TheKlan, and accordingly tries to stop it, only to be entwined in the vast underground EvilVersusEvil showdoen between the mysterious White Alligator and TheKlan.

* AntiHero: Shows some pretty brutal tendencies on occasion, such as wanting to cut of Lewis' fingers as revenge for Browns death

* BerserkButton: Even thinking to hurt Carolyn. At the mere suspicion that Woodrow had participated in torturing he, Cutlass nearly tears his head clean off.

* ClearMyName: Frequently becomes an issue for him. Namely in ''The Man From New Orleans'', where he is forced to evade being hung due to the machinations of Playcard.
* FedToTheBeast: [[spoiler: Woodrow tries thsi way to dispatch of Cutlass in ''The White Alligator'', and nearly succeeds, but he manages to evade the alligator.]]

* HeroWithBadPublicity: As the albums progresses, animosity against him in the public becoems worse and worse, thanks to Clay and Playcard.

A negro working for Carolyns plantation. [[spoiler: As revealed in ''Thunder in the South'', he was originally hoping to create a movement for an independent black state in the south, and grew a hate to The White Alligator. Therefore, he became a follower of The White Alligator, but used as a mole in the organisation by Don Clay, to retrieve information. Eventually, Clay concluded that he knew too much, and ahd him tortured and killed, due to a fear of him having actually joined the alligator.]]

* TheMole: Used by Clay against The White Alligator. [[spoiler: Clay eventually feared he was a ReverseMole.]]

A young, intellectual negro, also working on Carolyns plantation. [[spoiler: Also a member of The White Alligators organisation, but has a HeelFaceTurn in ''Thunder in the South'', and instead helps Cutlass.]]

* HeelFaceTurn: After the muder of the Morrows family, he loses faith in The White Alligator.

Two negroes working for Carolyn, and becomes the two main allies for Cutlass.

* AgentScully: Neuville, whom refuses to believe Woodrows explanations relating to The White Alligator.

The leader of TheKlan, holding the position of Grand Wizard, and controlling its movements. THerefore, the fundamental BigBad of the series. [[spoiler: Much of the plot consists of his continuing power struggle with The White Alligator, culminating in the final albums.]]

* BadBoss: Shoots down Phil, one of his henchmen in cold blood, after he has outlived his usefulness.

* EvilVersusEvil: His conflict with The White Alligator.

* FauxAffablyEvil: He frequently seems affable enough, cracking jokes and laughing with his henchmen. But he also does not hesitate to murder civilians to accomplish his goals.

* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: As a member of TheKlan, this is a must. Its mroe played with than most examples however, since he also seems to be interested in money, as this is his sole motivation for attacking Carolyns plantation.
* ThreeWaySex: Has sex with to black prostitutes.

* IHaveYouNowMyPretty: Plans to behave like this around MRs. Lewis, but does not get around to it.

* EyeScream: [[spoiler: Cutlass blinds one of his eyes during their final confrontattion in ''Thunder in the South'', shortly before he is shot dead by Neuville and Prosper.]]
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Tries to subject Cutlass to this fate, but [[spoiler: Neuville and Prosper kills him short of it.]]

The White Alligator is a mysterious albino negro wizard, whom holds an immense power in underground black movements of the south. According to Woodrow, he had managed to predict several dates in the Civil War, including the murder of Abraham Lincoln, and is amassing a vast cult, intending to break out an independent negro state in the south. And appearantly he has the ability to enter dreams and cause nightmares.

* TheBeastmaster: Controls the literal white alligator.

* {{Troll}}: Surprisingly, he frequently acts like in his nightmare sequences. Highlights include calling Cutlass a negro due to being whiter than him, and offeringn Cutlass payments for being an UnwittingPawn in another.
* WhereDaWhiteWomenAt: Appearently intends to rape and marry Carolyn, and has this plan in store for all white women.

An enormous albino alligator, controlled by The White Alligator wizard, and used to consolidate his power.

* AnimalsNotToScale: Though excusable by the voodoo backstory, it is grossly larger than normal alligators, as lampshaded by both Cutlass and Woodrow. A specific size is not given, but during the brief pages where it appears [[{{Pun}} in alligator]], it appears to be at least 7 metres long, the size of a very large saltwater crocodile, and much larger than any American alligators, which can, in extreme casses, never exceed five metres.

* EldritchAbomination: Considered this by the swamp inhabitants. For a good reason.
