[[folder:Joseph Bertrand III (unmarked spoilers)]]III]]

* ArmouredClosetGay: While not ever brought up or questioned in the game (WordOfGay or otherwise), fans like to see Bertrand's behavior and powers as an allegory meant as commentary on closeted homophobes. Most homophobic people [[HeteronormativeCrusader view homosexuality as being "monstrous", "satanic", "ungodly", and "unnatural"]], much like how Bertrand views Conduits. He himself exhibits all of these traits [[HaveYouTriedNotBeingAMonster literally through his powers]], literally projecting this image onto others and then demonizing them, claiming this all to be the truth to the general public.

A race of monsters that emerged from the swamps following the hurricane, the Corrupted periodically attack the city in large packs. [[spoiler:They are actually the victims of Bertrand's Conduit powers, used to fool the public into supporting him.]]

A world-famous unit of South African mercenaries. Hired by Bertrand, they were given ice-based superpowers -- [[spoiler:extracted from Lucy Kuo]] -- and put in stasis for later sale to dictators around the world; unfortunately, they were accidentally released by Cole, resulting in them taking over the flooded areas of New Marais.

* DisappointedByTheMotive: His reaction when he finds out Bertrand's motives for starting a Conduit arms race and the reasons for his {{Boomerang Bigot}}ry in ''2''. While Cole doesn't outright say he's disappointed, his tone of voice does it for him:
-->'''Cole''': Oh, I finally get it. You thought the Ray Sphere was gonna turn you into some sort of shiny superhuman... but instead it turned you into a [[Attackofthe50FootWhatever fifty-foot maggot]].

IDidWhatIHadToDo: He sometimes tries to justify his self-serving actions to his friends. Such as when he took a whole shipment of food from other starving citizens, saying that he and his friends needed more of it.

* MoralEventHorizon: InUniverse, the game considers Cole irredeemably evil if he decides to [[spoiler:use the second Ray Sphere to obtain more power]]. This choice is so heinous that if you take it, you'll be kicked down to the Infamous rank, and locked there permanently.
