Haruhi Suzumiya is a force of nature, both [[RealityWarper literally]] and [[GenkiGirl figuratively]]. An intense and GenreSavvy young woman, Haruhi bulls her way through life with little concern for others, starting from the moment she introduces herself on her first day of high school. Starting off as a ruthless, misanthropic, [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisocial_personality_disorder#Diagnostic_criteria sociopathic]] {{Jerkass}}, conversing with Kyon (who takes her apparently-insane ramblings with his typical deadpan seriousness) eventually draws Haruhi out of her shell. When she gets bored with her school's selection of social clubs, she decides to [[StartMyOwn Start Her Own]]: the '''''S'''ekai wo '''O'''oi ni Moriageru tame no '''S'''uzumiya Haruhi no Dan'', or [[FunWithAcronyms SOS Brigade]] ('''S'''preading Excitement All '''O'''ver the World With Haruhi '''S'''uzumiya Brigade, or in Strato's translations '''S'''ave the World by '''O'''verloading it with Fun Haruhi '''S'''uzumiya Brigade in English). The club's purpose, as stated by Haruhi, is to find [[{{Alien}} aliens]], [[TimeTravel time travelers]], and [[PsychicPowers espers]], and hang out with them. So naturally, Haruhi goes out and recruits an alien, a time traveler, and an esper. Of course, [[LockedOutOfTheLoop she doesn't realize it]], and thinks she just picked up the "traditional" archetypes of EmotionlessGirl, MoeMoe, and NewTransferStudent to complete her FiveManBand. And of course, what Haruhi '''really''' doesn't realize is that she herself is a RealityWarper capable of rewriting the universe at a whim, and that her "recruits'" real roles are to keep her from doing just that.

'''Emiri Kimidori''' is the resident SatelliteCharacter and, from what we know, somewhat of a YamatoNadeshiko. No one really knows anything about her but the writers gave her an own [[ImageSong image album]] just to mess with our heads, anyway. Actually, she ''is'' meant to be another Humanoid Interface like Yuki or Ryoko, but thus far has done little in the story but progress a couple of minor plots and ally with Itsuki's fake AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil. A bit of an EnsembleDarkhorse, since she's got a fanbase despite limited appearances. However, most of her fanart depicts her [[MemeticMolester sexually harassing various TMOHS characters]]. [[spoiler: Has taken a more active role in the 10th book; observing the Canopy Domain since [[WorfHadTheFlu Yuki has the Flu.]]]]

* ObliviousToLove/SelectiveObliviousness: Kyon's (un)awareness of Haruhi's attraction to him is complicated to judge.

** More or less, it seems she self-imposes a limitation not to cause any significant harm and maintain the Masquerade.

** JerkAssWoobie: She learns, rather painfully, that she isn't all that special (which is what she desires the most in her life), and in her quest to make her life special, goes on the hunt for aliens, time travellers and ES Pers after some inspiration from Kyon. This leads to her general sociopathy, and her obsession with cosplaying Mikuru.

* ObliviousToLove: Especially in the Anime, as it doesn't really have the time to include Kyon's SelectiveObliviousness from the books. Itsuki [[LampshadeHanging points it out a few times]], once to tell Kyon that he and Haruhi are the new [[AdamAndEvePlot Adam and Eve]], and then later telling Kyon to embrace Haruhi from behind then whisper "I love you" into her ear. Kyon reacts angrilly, at which point Itsuki tells him it's a joke.
** There are, however, some subtle examples where Kyon seems to be genuinely oblivious to Haruhi's attraction to him. Best one: in "Melancholy III," Kyon suggests to Haruhi to "find [herself] a nice guy and go walking around the city looking for strange things; [she] could even call it a date and kill two birds with one stone," which is a very stupid (and maybe even cruel) thing to say if you realize that that was '''exactly''' what Haruhi had wanted to do with Kyon in the mystery search the other day.

* SelectiveObliviousness (required for stretching his WillTheyOrWontThey with Haruhi for ''ten freakin' novels''.)
** Also made hilariously obvious in the prologue of ''Dissociation'' when Itsuki has to devote ''a couple pages'' to trying to get Kyon to figure out that the reason Haruhi got upset after meeting Kyon's [[SheIsAllGrownUp childhood friend]] was because she was jealous.
** There have been a couple of moments during his monologues that point to him being aware of the situation, but [[JustIgnoreIt actively trying to think about it as little as humanly possible]], since having Haruhi as girlfriend would be... [[{{Understatement}} troublesome]].
