!ÅŒarai Girls' Academy

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/GUP_OoaraiSmall2_9335.png
A small school ship docked at ÅŒarai, Ibaraki Prefecture, with no real claim to fame, this is its first time participating in the High School National Tankery Tournament. This is immediately following its Tankery class's revival after over twenty years of inactivity. Compared to the other schools, their selection of tanks show no unified theme -- because they hardly have the time or money to select their tanks, ÅŒarai has to make do with an assortment of surplus tanks.[[note]]After their Tankery Club was disbanded 20 years ago, they tried to sell all their tanks. The tanks that remained were not of the best quality.[[/note]]
----
* CompanionCube: ÅŒarai's tanks are almost treated like characters. While they are inanimate and perform [[AvertedTrope no]] [[AnimateInanimateObject actions]] of their own, some tropes are prominently used in their portrayal, as opposed to the opposing tanks (which get a much less detailed portrayal, with ONE very notorious exception).
* [[FiveManBand Five-Tank Band]]: In a variation, ÅŒarai's ''tank teams'' behave as a FiveManBand by proxy, because of the ways they behave as units in battle. Starting Episode 5, the girls start referring to them not as "teams" but as though they were people (e.g., "Rabbit-san" as opposed to "Team Rabbit"), complete with JapaneseHonorifics.
* MultinationalTeam: Tank version -- unlike the other schools, ÅŒarai has no single class of tanks, instead relying on an assortment of tanks from different countries (Czech Republic, France, Germany, Japan and USA).
* WeakButSkilled: They don't have the massive numbers and firepower compared to other schools and their tanks have maintenance issues that need to be tended to often due to years of neglect. Of course, they are really excellent performers in spite of the issues.

!Team A/Anglerfish Team
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/GUP_AnglerfishSmall_2949.png
->''"[[TrueCompanions Whatever happens, we give our best with teamwork.]]"''

The protagonists' team. They drive a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_IV Panzer IV Ausf. D]], a German medium tank, updated in Episode 7 into [[MidSeasonUpgrade an Ausf. F2 configuration]] with a longer 75mm Kwk 40 L/43 gun and increased frontal armor, and later in Episode 10 into [[PowerupFullColorChange an Ausf. H]], with a new paintjob, spaced turret armor and sideskirt armor. Initially the only ÅŒarai team without a ThemeNaming scheme, their team's name was later given to them by the other teams right before entering the national tournament.
----
* [[FiveManBand Five-Girl Band]]: In contrast to the homogenous theme of the girls of other teams, the girls of Anglerfish Team complement each other.
* TheLeader: Of the ÅŒarai teams as a whole, with their leader Miho becoming, by default, de facto commander of the squadron.
----

!!Panzer IV
* CompanionCube: The reason it's given an entry in the ''characters'' page.
* ContinuityNod: Miho uses the same model of tank in the manga prequel and the anime. This is even given a subtle ContinuityNod in Episode 1.
* JackOfAllStats: The Panzer IV is portrayed as versatile and useful in most roles, [[ShownTheirWork exactly like its historical usage]].
* MidSeasonUpgrade: The [=Panzer IV=] is the only tank [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin to be upgraded roughly mid-season]]. Other tanks are upgraded for the FinalBattle or not at all.
* PowerupFullColorChange: When it receives its final upgrade for the FinalBattle, it's given [[ShownTheirWork that model's most common historical paint pattern]] instead of keeping its usual color.
* StraightMan: Is the only tank not painted in bright colors in episodes 1 to 4. [[AnInteriorDesignerIsYou The insides, on the other hand...]]
----

!!Miho Nishizumi
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garupan_miho_4903.png
->''"It's not for [[HeirToTheDojo the sake of my home]]. Neither is it to [[BigBrotherWorship imitate big sis]]... This summer, I did Panzer with everyone. I felt that I could treasure this memory. That is perhaps... my 'Panzerkraft'."''

->'''Position:''' Tank Commander/Squadron Commander
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MaiFuchigami (Japanese), Meg [=McDonald=] (English)

The main character of the anime and a scion of a clan of famous tankers. She left the discipline after a certain incident and transferred from Kuromorimine into ÅŒarai, since its Tankery class was defunct for over two decades. She was promptly drafted into becoming the leader of its first class in twenty years (as a loader, then later commander of not just her team, but of the school's squadron) after the Student Council discovers her experience.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: She's somewhat shy and socially awkward, and Saori says that she got interested in Miho because she seemed "jittery".
* ArmorPiercingQuestion
** Gives one to Anchovy in the manga, during the latter's VillainousBreakdown after her defeat at Miho's hands.
-->'''Anchovy''': ''"[[SeriousBusiness There's no meaning to doing Panzerkraft if you don't strive for victory]]!"''
-->'''Miho''': ''"So, is there no meaning to all the efforts you and your comrades gave?"''
-->'''Anchovy''': ''"[[DefensiveWhat What]]?"''
** She tries this on her mother in Chapter 7 of ''Little Army'', but fails.
* BattleCry: Has often said the words "Panzer Vor"[[note]]a German army command for tanks to advance[[/note]] throughout the anime. May also count as her CatchPhrase.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Miho ultimately joins Tankery class because Saori and Hana, her first two friends at ÅŒarai, decide that they want to join the same class as her, even though they wanted Tankery. Even when the Student Council is berating her for not joining, the girls argue vehemently for her, which she later tells them no one has ever done for her before.
* BeYourself: The anime is about her finding her own way of Tankery. Her character song is open about this.
* [[AFatherToHisMen A Big Sister to Her Friends]]: Her first words to damaged or knocked out friendly units are to ask if the crew is alright, and is more than willing to jump out of her tank to rescue allies in danger -- no wonder everyone in ÅŒarai's tank teams love, adore and respect her.
* BigSisterWorship: ''Little Army'' reveals that she looked up to Maho and wanted to follow her footsteps.
* BookEnds
** On a meta-story level, the main plot of ''Little Army'' ([[spoiler:Maho firing on the enemy flag tank while it was trying to rescue some of her own teammates who risk drowning]]) and the key of Miho's DarkAndTroubledPast ([[spoiler:Miho choosing to rescue her drowning teammates at the cost of her team's flag tank]]), happening between prequel and anime, are very similar.
** Within ''Little Army'', the prequel begins with Miho walking to ÅŒarai alone like she did in Episode 1, and in the ending, cuts back to the present and shows her walking to school, only for Saori to call out to her and for her to [[YouAreNotAlone turn around and see all her friends]].
* [[spoiler:BrokenPedestal[=/=]RebuiltPedestal: Her relationship with her older sister Maho goes through this ''twice'' -- in ''Little Army''. It was broken when Miho learns that Maho willingly fired upon an enemy flag tank rescuing a drowning tank crew ''from her own team'', then rebuilt after their heart-to-heart conversation in later chapters; then in the anime, it was implied to have been broken again after Miho left Kuromorimine and tried to quit Tankery after her attempt to rescue a drowning teammate cost her team their tenth straight championship and earned her a cold-hearted dressing down from her strict mother (who is the head of the Nishizumi style of Tankery), then started rebuilding as Maho lending her team chopper to Mako in Episode 6 showed that she still thought highly of helping fellow players, even from opposing teams.]]
* [[CallingTheOldManOut Calling the Old Woman Out]]: Downplayed, in that Miho never actively questions her mother's adherence to their Tankery style, though at one point she directly asked her if it was necessary [[spoiler:for Maho to shoot the enemy flag tank rescuing a ''friendly'' unit]]. She was unusually forward to a degree that Maho [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness found it uncharacteristic of her]].
* ClosedDoorRapport: In the last chapter of ''Little Army'', unsure of whether or why she should continue doing Tankery, she hides inside one of her family's tanks until Sakuyo, Chihiro and Hitomi convince her to come out.
* CombatPragmatist: Miho is often able to think up strategies and tactics on the fly, and will utilize whatever she has to win, such as luring a tank into a trap using false communications. While their effectiveness varies depending on the opposing team's chemistry and performance, this trait of hers is acknowledged as a major strength by all her opponents and Maho [[spoiler:notes how it was just like Miho to fight her as she did, in her own style, that managed to defeat her. She also bluntly tells their mother that Miho is much more skilled than she gives her credit for]].
* CuteClumsyGirl: Bumps into a light post in Episode 1 while turning to look at a bakery, and in class, she drops her pencil, then several other items while attempting to retrieve it. Later in the cafeteria she nearly trips after getting her lunch. She also implies that she's clumsy to her two new friends.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler:After one of the tanks in her squad fell down a river, she abandons hers -- the flag unit -- to save them, losing the championship in the process]].
* DefectorFromDecadence: Left Kuromorimine because she cannot agree with its "[[SeriousBusiness win at all costs]]" attitude towards Tankery.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Lampshaded in Episode 10 when Darjeeling, Kay, and Katyusha show up to wish Miho luck and chat with her nonchalantly. [[spoiler: She even does this with her older sister in Episode 12, when Miho's victory causes Maho to put aside her JerkassFacade to congratulate her]].
* DontCallMeSir: Suggests that one of her mother's students, being older, does not need to address her formally, but the student tells her that age doesn't matter since she's the instructor's daughter.
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: After being told to take Tankery by the student council, when she has a blank, unchanging stare until she and her friends were in the nurse's office.
* {{Expy}}: Of Miyanaga Saki from Manga/{{Saki}}, as someone who is good at the game featured in the series, and despite not liking it because the way her family does it, becomes a key part in her school's efforts against their rivals, including her sister. Unlike Saki, Miho has done nothing for Maho to hate her, [[spoiler:and indeed, Maho loves her very much, enough to sacrifice her own happiness so that Miho can find her own way in the world]].
* FamedInStory: Many in ÅŒarai squeed at the sight of a scion of a legendary Tankery clan becoming one of them. Yukari was chief among them.
* FriendlessBackground: Briefly alluded to this in ''Little Army'', as, similarly to Yukari, she had difficulty finding friends who were interested in tanks before meeting Hitomi, Chihiro and Emi.
* GeniusDitz: She is an excellent Tankery commander and generally competent, but also clumsy.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Miho has a large collection of teddy plushies, all bandaged, which she uses as {{Security Blanket}}s whenever she's experiencing {{Flashback Echo}}es.
* TheGlomp:
** Gives one to Maho in ''Little Army'' when she gets home after the tournament.
** Receives one from Anzu [[spoiler: after winning the championship.]]
* {{Guile Hero}}ine: She generally out-thinks and outwits opposing commanders, win or lose. [[spoiler:Except Maho, with whom, [[FearfulSymmetry unsurprisingly]], she usually ties.]]
* HeirToTheDojo: Miho hails from a family of legendary tank warriors, and has been reared into their style since childhood.
* HeroicBSOD
** Has a minor one after being told to take Tankery by the student council, having a blank, unchanging stare until she and her friends were in the nurse's office.
** Tends to suffer one whenever a friendly tank is knocked out. Her friends generally pull her out before she crashes.
** In the battle against Maho's tank in ''Little Army'', when she loses confidence in their ability to win.
** In ''Little Army'', when Maho [[spoiler:confirms what Emi said]] and begins acting cold and distant. Since she got into Tankery because of a desire to be like her sister, she's [[BrokenPedestal shaken to the core and considers quitting]].
* HeroicSacrifice: During the match against Pravda, she is initially willing to surrender to avoid the possibility of people being injured in the shootout should she continue fighting, despite knowing that [[spoiler:she will be disinherited should she fail to win]].
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: In ''Little Army'', she said she has long wanted to find people she can do Tankery with. In the main series, despite having believed that leaving Tankery behind is the right thing to do, she feels lonely at ÅŒarai until she meets Saori and Hana and is thrust back into the one thing she knows how to do.
* IKnowYouKnowIKnow: In the practice match against Maho in ''Little Army'', Miho says that Maho's [=StuG III=] not having a turret means attacking it from the sides is ideal, but...
-->'''Miho''': ''"I'm sure big sis already knows that as well."'' ([[IronicEchoCut cuts to Maho]])
-->'''Maho''': ''"Miho's team is definitely going to come at us from our flanks."''
* JapaneseSiblingTerminology: Uses "Onee-chan" on Maho, and in the dub, addresses her as "Sister."
* TheLeader: As the only Tankery veteran in the school, she is elected to this position; both as commander of Anglerfish Team and of the ÅŒarai squadron as a whole. She overlaps with all types: planning the attack before the match (mastermind), staying focused during the match (levelheaded) and inspiring her subordinates to follow her (charismatic).
* LittleMissBadass: Both in and out of tanks.
* LonelyRichKid: She is the youngest of the prestigious Nishizumi family and in ''Little Army'', tells Emi that because she wasn't able to make any friends who shared her interest in tankery before meeting her, Chihiro and Hitomi, she hopes that the four of them can get along.
* MandatoryUnretirement: Due to a past trauma, Miho became uncomfortable with tanks, so she moved to a school that doesn't have a Tankery class. However, [[TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive that school's Student Council decides shortly after she moves to revive the class and force her into it]].
* MeaningfulName
** It's likely that her surname is a reference to Nishizumi Kojiro, a famous tank commander during the Sino-Japanese War.
** The ''"-ho"'' ending their given names (Mi''ho'', Ma''ho'', Shi''ho'') could be a based on the Japanese word for "cannon".
* NewTransferStudent: Transfers into ÅŒarai in the first episode.
* NiceGirl: Almost never gets angry or has anything bad to say about others, no matter how mean they are to her.
* NiceToTheWaiter: Gets along well with the Nishizumi maids, who are willing to talk with her about her problems. In the manga, it is indicated that she still maintains correspondence with Kikuyo via mail.
* NoOneGetsLeftBehind: Her philosophy, which put her at odds with her own family's "[[SeriousBusiness win at all costs]]" policy. She doesn't think twice about leaving her tank to save a crew in distress. In the finals, she even managed to [[spoiler:save Rabbit Team from sinking by leaping across ÅŒarai's tanks, tying a rope around it and leaping back, enabling the other tanks to drag it through]].
* NormalFishInATinyPond: She finds herself unfavorably compared to her mother and sister, but she's the foremost expert on Tankery in ÅŒarai, which brings her to the forefront of their Tankery class's renaissance. Erika remarks on this once, commenting that the school must be weak if she managed to become its commander. [[spoiler:Downplayed, if not straight-out subverted, in that Maho believes that Miho ''is'' as talented as herself.]]
* TheOjou: Of the SpoiledSweet kind. She had a good relation with the family servants, wanted to make friends, and generally is a NiceGirl.
* OnlySaneMan: For example, see her increasingly confused and worried reactions to the increasingly crazier antics of her teammates as they buy swimsuits during OVA 1.
* OutGambitted
** What Maho does to her during the finals -- Maho has been watching her little sister's matches, so naturally she [[CrazyPrepared has countermeasures]] in case Miho tries to repeat her trick of dragging the enemy into UrbanWarfare. Which she does.
** Maho also does this in the practice battle in ''Little Army''. Miho is understandably less than confident in her plans because she knows how skilled Maho is. After she barely avoids defeat thanks to luck, Miho, after getting a HeroicSecondWind, decides for a final confrontation with Maho, knowing that they're not skilled enough to escape her. [[spoiler:She just barely loses.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Twice in ''Little Army''. Maho notes to Miho how unusual it was for her to question their mother over Maho's aloof behavior, and later Sakuyo also tells her how surprised she is (as are Chihiro and Hitomi) to see her get into a fight with Emi after the latter states she hates Maho, whom she never met before.
* RefusalOfTheCall: She transferred out of Kuromorimine to get out of Tankery, but [[TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive her new school desperately needs to succeed at it, and so she's drafted.]]
* ReluctantRuler: Her teammates have to insist that she be the tank commander ''several times'' before she accepts. Anzu has to do the same thing when it comes to being the squadron commander.
* RousingSpeech: Played with. Miho's natural meekness makes her ''suck'' at the usual techniques that make a good speech, so her results when trying vary. When rallying her teams mid-battle, she resorts to [[AwesomenessByAnalysis tactical analysis]] which her teammates take as rousing (such as the matches against St. Gloriana and Saunders). When she ''does'' try, she fails miserably, like her first two against Pravda (more so with the second, where she speaks fluently and convincingly... to convince ÅŒarai to ''surrender''); come the third, upon realizing that [[spoiler:defeat or capitulation would cause ÅŒarai to shut down for good]], she gets it right -- and even that doesn't work because morale dropped quickly afterwards; the fourth (at Momo's request) fails miserably; and come the ''fifth'', she just [[DefiedTrope drops the speeches]] and [[spoiler:gets [[CrowdSong the team]] to join in [[ChekhovsSkill the Anglerfish Dance]]]]. She does give a somewhat decent speech before the finals, saying that [[spoiler:no matter what happens, she will consider Oarai her alma mater]]. Finally, after [[spoiler:ÅŒarai wins the tournament, and Miho is asked to say something to the team, she stammers for a moment [[LettingTheAirOutOfTheBand (causing the background music to stop dead)]], then yells "Panzer Vor!"]].
* SecondYearProtagonist: Her first year involved a traumatic event involving Tankery, which lead to her transfer to ÅŒarai for her second year.
* SecurityBlanket: Uses her plushies as them while experiencing {{Flashback Echo}}es.
* ShellShockedVeteran: She has plenty of experience with Tankery and not all of it was positive. She also tends to get {{Flashback Echo}}es.
* {{Squee}}: As a ContinuityNod to ''Little Army'', when she first saw the (then) only ÅŒarai tank -- a Panzer IV Ausf. D, the same one she commanded as a ten-year-old with her childhood friends -- her expression and voice both soften considerably and she caresses the old tank's armor.
* StepfordSmiler: At times, such as after Maho coldly walks off with their mother in ''Little Army'', or when she acts as though nothing happened the day after being told that [[spoiler:she will be disinherited if she loses the semifinals]] in the main series manga.
* TheStrategist: Best exemplified in the St. Gloriana match -- though most of her tanks are downed due to crew inexperience and/or inadequate equipment, she still manages to knock out three of four remaining enemy tanks with just Anglerfish Team thanks to clever strategies [[IndyPloy thought up on the fly]], [[spoiler: and it would have been all four [[NoSell had the Panzer IV's gun been able to knock out the Churchill]].]]
* TacticalWithdrawal: In stark contrast with her family's [[AttackAttackAttack straightforward approach]], ''every'' battle she fights is ultimately won (or at least narrowly lost) through retreating from unfavorable situations, rallying, then attacking again.
* TakeAThirdOption: Miho's choices in the finals seem to be winning the match or saving her friends. Operative words being "seem" and "or".
* [[WellDoneSonGuy Well Done Daughter Girl]]: Surprisingly, averted. She shows virtually no desire to win her mother's approval.
* WhatTheHellHero: In "Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu", she starts to politely criticize Sodoko's overzealous enforcement of the rules, and is forced to dye her hair black despite it being her natural color.
* WhiteSheep: Left her family due to her disagreement with their combat style, and even Maho seemed to show no opinion over Miho's victory against Saunders in Episode 6. [[spoiler:In the final episode, Maho openly tells Miho that her own style triumphed and that she's happy that Miho found her own path. Even ''Shiho'' claps for Miho.]]
* WorldOfCardboardSpeech: At the end of ''Little Army'', she gives one on her reasons to go into Tankery, which provides her character quote.
* YouAreInCommandNow: Miho is increasingly given more responsibilities due to her experience, despite initial reluctance -- first as tank commander after Saori fails at it, then later appointed by the Student Council as squadron commander before their first match, after she raises concerns about Momo's plan.

!!Saori Takebe
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garupan_saori_2266.png
->''"Count on me for [[KnowNothingKnowItAll love advice]]!"''

->'''Position:''' Radio Operator
->'''Voiced by:''' AiKayano (Japanese), JessicaCalvello (English)

The main character of the light novel adaptaion, Saori is a redhead with a string of failed searches for romance. She's one of Miho's first friends since her transfer to ÅŒarai. She becomes Anglerfish Team's radio operator due to her love of small talk.
----
* AFriendInNeed: Risked expulsion together with Hana [[spoiler:(or so they thought)]] by defending Miho's decision not to take up Tankery before the Student Council.
%%* BigOlEyebrows
* CoolBigSis: To the girls of Rabbit Team, giving (untried) love advice, explaining things, leading their search team, and comforting the panicking younger girls when they're hopelessly lost.
* CasanovaWannabe: A rare female example. She'd have an UrbanLegendLoveLife if anyone believed her for more than five minutes. So infamous is she for her failed attempts that the girls of Rabbit Team once jested that she has a more successful "romance" with the Panzer.
* ChangeTheUncomfortableSubject: Saori is pretty good at noticing when something is bothering Miho and getting her mind out of it.
* ChekhovsHobby: Her speedy texting comes in handy in the battle with Saunders.
* TheChick: Of the Anglerfish Team's [[FiveManBand Five-Girl Band]], as an excellent communicator and hopeless boy-chaser.
* ChildhoodFriends: She's known Mako for a long time and uses her inside knowledge to get her to stay in Tankery class.
* EyelidPullTaunt: Does one as Erika is walking away in Episode 5.
* TheFace: Playing with a trope. She's the radio operator for Anglerfish Team, but in that case she's relaying Miho's orders.
* FriendshipMoment: As Mako is about to leave in the helicopter in Episode 6, she impulsively boards the chopper to keep her company.
* TheGlassesGottaGo[=/=]{{Meganekko}}: Typically wears contacts out of vanity, though sometimes she wears a pair of large red glasses.
* InvisibleParents: She obviously has parents, and briefly alludes to her father often saying that he loves her, but they're the only ones unseen throughout the anime, meaning they are likely the most normal parents.
* KidAnova: Claims to have a boyfriend in every port, but her reaction to Rabbit Team asking how many boyfriends she has so far? [[CasanovaWannabe Sulking.]]
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: When it comes to romantic relationships, she has plenty of advice but no experience.
* LetsGetDangerous: Played with in a MundaneMadeAwesome way. Saori drops the glasses when she sets about cooking the first time; otherwise she wears them when dealing with other housework.
* TheNicknamer: She loves adding "-in" to peoples names: Miho to "Miporin", Yukari to "Yukarin", and so forth.
* PersonalRaincloud: She gets one when the girls from Rabbit Team ask her how many boyfriends has she had.
* {{Red Headed Hero}}ine: She's the protagonist of the light novels. Otherwise, it's downplayed.
* TeamMom: She handles Mako, worries about Miho's wellbeing, and is the only one of the team who can cook.
* WhatTheHellHero: Complains about the Student Council threatening Miho with expulsion over not taking Tankery. [[spoiler:It's only what it seemed like at the time]].
-->''"Don't be so selfish!"''
* ZettaiRyouiki: She's the only character to sport this look, even when the girls suggest legwarmers for the match against Pravda. [[FridgeBrilliance Maybe she's trying to invoke their appeal with boys?]]
----

!!Hana Isuzu
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garupan_hana_188.png
->''"No matter for how long I kept arranging the flowers, I felt like something was missing. But I want to work with stronger flowers!"''

->'''Position:''' Gunner
->'''Voiced by:''' Mami Ozaki (Japanese), Caitlynn French (English)

The other first friend of Miho since her transfer to ÅŒarai, Hana is the daughter of a family of ''ikebana'' (flower arrangement) professionals. She initially sat at the driver's seat, but the thrill of hearing the roar of shells inspired her to man the Panzer's guns.
----
* AFriendInNeed: Risked expulsion together with Saori [[spoiler:(so they thought)]] for defending Miho's decision not to do Tankery.
* BigEater: It's subtle, but she always has bigger portions than her teammates when they have a meal. In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', this is made into a joke when Saori, seeing that she's gained weight, worries about inadvertently taking larger servings while around Hana.
* TheBigGirl: She's the gunner for the Anglerfish team. She's proud of her accuracy.
* BlackSheep: Disowned by her mother for doing Tankery. She still comes to watch the match against Pravda in Episode 8, [[spoiler: and their next meeting at a flower exhibit brings mom around and Hana is welcomed back into the family.]]
* [[FantasyForbiddingFather Fantasy-Forbidding Mother]]: Yuri initially opposes her daughter's interests due to finding tankery a vulgar and barbaric practice, and wants her to stay in the family's ikebana business.
* FriendlySniper: Soon after being assigned as gunner, she does some impressive shooting with a low-velocity 75mm [=KwK=] 37 L/24 cannon.
-->''"[[PreAsskickingOneLiner No. One shell is enough.]]"''
* HeirToTheDojo: Hana's family is very prominent in ikebana, and she was supposed to succeed her mother's school.
* IdiotHair: Has a long one sticking out of her head. Averted with her [[NervesOfSteel headstrong]] [[FriendlySniper personality]] and her [[YamatoNadeshiko proper upbringing]].
* IKnowMaddenKombat: Hana uses her ikebana concentration for ''gunnery''.
* JapanesePronouns: Depending on the situation, [[{{Keigo}} she will often use the ultra-formal "watakushi", but sometimes uses "watashi" instead]].
* KimonoIsTraditional: Wears a yellow kimono to her flower exhibit.
* LadyOfWar: She's tall, elegant and gentle... and fires live ammo. Tankery and ikebana are all the same to her.
* MeaningfulName: Hana means "flower", and in case you haven't noticed yet, she's an ikebana specialist. It also means "nose", in conjunction with her sense of smell.
* NervesOfSteel: In addition to standing up to the Student Council to defend Miho's (initial) decision not to do Tankery, she's the only member of the search party in Episode 7 who doesn't get scared of the "ghosts" inside the school ship, and is determined to go see Mako's grandmother despite hearing her yelling. Yukari lampshades this.
* TheNoseKnows: Has a keen sense of smell, honed by years working with flowers. She helps pinpoint an abandoned tank on the school grounds by being able to detect the smell of iron and oil in a forest.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite being seemingly one of the more down-to-earth members of the team, she randomly plays with a tent rope in OVA 2, and starts arranging the weeds in the spinoff manga. In the same spinoff manga, she ''laughs uncontrollably'' at Assam's terrible jokes.
* OhCrap: Her reaction when Yukari mentions she's doing Tankery in front of her mother, not knowing Yuri does not approve.
* TheOjou: Similar to Miho, but to a family of a different specialty.
* WhatTheHellHero: Complains about the Student Council threatening Miho with expulsion over not taking Tankery. [[spoiler:It's only what it seemed like at the time]].
-->''"Please give up on Nishizumi-san."''
* WorthyOpponent: Of sorts to Saunders' second-in-command Naomi, as revealed in the spin-off manga.
* YamatoNadeshiko: Tankery is supposed to mold girls into this, but she already fits the bill; polite, elegant, skilled in traditional art forms and possess NervesOfSteel.

->''"Panzer is life, life is Panzer."''

->'''Position:''' Loader
->'''Voiced by:''' Ikumi Nakagami (Japanese), Rebekah Stevens (English)

The main character of the manga adaptation, Yukari is an energetic tank fangirl who hides severe fitting-in issues. Then she met kindred souls in the form of Miho, Saori and Hana, inspiring her to become the gunner, and later the loader and de facto second-in-command of Anglerfish Team.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: Look into her interactions with Miho, particularly when she begins to act flustered.
* AllWomenLoveShoes: Much to her mother's consternation, she enjoys collecting military footwear.
* ApologizesALot: Usually after some enthusiastic outburst.
* AscendedFangirl: A girl who loves tanks, and gets to be a crew of one of them, more so commanded by her idol, a Nishizumi. In the manga, for the match against Anzio, she gets to command a newly-restored Char B1 bis because there wasn't enough time to recruit three new members to man the tank before the match.
* ColorFailure:
** In the manga, after hearing about [[spoiler:Miho being threatened with disinheritance]].
** Played for laughs in volume 4 of the spin-off manga, when she sees Kay kiss Miho on the cheek.
* CrazyPrepared: She carries a military-issue mess kit around, and is genuinely surprised other people don't do the same. Taken UpToEleven in the fifth OVA, much to Erwin's amazement.
* DressingAsTheEnemy: While infiltrating Saunders, she wears the Saunders school uniform. In the fifth OVA, she and Erwin steal some of the Pravda team's overcoats and talk to Nina, a Pravda student who doesn't recognize them.
* {{Fangirl}}: Of tanks. She all but ''cuddles'' the [=Pz38(t)=] when it was found.
* FriendlessBackground: Yukari was so obsessed with tanks, she had virtually no common ground with schoolmates until she met Miho.
* FriendlySniper: During her brief time as gunner, she gets 3 kills with 3 shots despite not having any Tankery experience.
* GenkiGirl: Even outside Tankery, she acts quite lively.
* HeroWorshipper: Admires Miho and her knowledge and skills in Tankery.
** In an official 4-koma gag strip [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Miho_Daki_4Koma_7788.jpg she owns a Miho dakimakura (hug pillow)]].
** In the first OVA, she's shown to ''know'' all ''her three sizes''[[note]]Although the first two measurements were already revealed during the uniform fitting in Episode 5 (with elated gasps from Yukari no less), the third wasn't[[/note]]. Judging by Miho's embarrassed reaction, she got them right.
* InSeriesNickname:
** [[NeverLiveItDown Sergeant Third-Class]] [[Film/KellysHeroes Oddball]] after the Saunders infiltration.
** In the manga, because of her respect toward her fellow history-buff and superb performance as the commander of the Char B1 bis during the Anzio match, Erwin calls her [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinz_Guderian Guderian]]. In the anime, she gets the nickname after helping them find the Char B1 bis.
* TheLancer: For the Anglerfish Team's [[FiveManBand Five-Girl Band]] as de facto second-in-command and tank otaku.
* OtakuSurrogate: Yukari fills this role for military geeks in general and tank geeks in particular. She used to be a lonely person in her hobby, too.
* SacrificedBasicSkillForAwesomeTraining: Yukari was too busy thinking of tanks to make friends.
* SecretKeeper: In the manga, is the only one besides Miho who knows that [[spoiler:Miho will be disinherited if she loses to Pravda]].
* {{Squee}}: Tanks evoke this reaction on her ("Panzer High", as Miho puts it), and a more heartwarming one when [[spoiler:one of the tank crew Miho saved during her tenure at Kuromorimine thanks her for saving her (and her comrades)]].
* TheSpymaster: She (mostly) successfully infiltrated Saunders. In later episodes, she's Miho's first choice for scouting.
* SuperStrength: In OVA 1, she hurls Mako airborne using only her left arm; a result of spending time lifting heavy tank shells and workouts, as she states during OVA 2.
* TalkingInYourSleep: Some talk of food, others of erotic things... [[GunPorn such as]] [[ItMakesSenseInContext Leopard 2 MBT cannons]].
* TheTeamWannabe: When the Tankery teams are assembled at the end of the first episode, she is seen standing behind Miho, Saori and Hana. Later in episode 2, she is seen admiring Miho from a distance behind a tree as the girls look for the tanks in a parking lot. At first she seems unimportant, but when Miho look back at the tree, Yukari hides. When they start walking away, Yukari tries to follow them, but then Miho starts talking to her, and she ends up becoming the fourth member of their group.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: When Hana is introducing her friends to her mother, Yukari mentions that she's in a different class from Hana, Saori and Miho, but they're doing Tankery together -- oblivious to the fact that Yuri Isuzu doesn't know of and disapproves of her daughter's hobby, and later [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone apologizes for what happened next]].
* WithDueRespect: Yukari likes to use military terms, addresses Miho and the crew by the very formal "[[JapaneseHonorifics -dono]]", and invokes this trope verbatim when defending Miho from Erika's TrashTalk.
* YouAreInCommandNow: In the manga, in order to field the newly-restored Char B1 bis for the match against Anzio, Miho had to form a new three-person team for it by drawing from ÅŒarai's existing crew pool. Yukari was chosen to take the commander's seat (along with Team Hippo's Erwin as gunner/loader and Team Rabbit's Aya as driver) until three new members could be recruited to man it.
* YouDidTheRightThing: Her opinion of Miho's past decision to [[spoiler:save the crew of sinking tank even at the cost of a championship]].

!!Mako Reizei
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garupan_mako_1073.png
->''"Humans can't wake up at six in the morning."''

->'''Position:''' Driver
->'''Voiced by:''' YukaIguchi (Japanese), Molly Searcy (English)

Saori's childhood friend and a gloomy fellow with a string of tardiness and absences stemming both from her dislike of rising early in the morning and, so she claims, a low blood pressure. She only joins the team because of the incentive of clearing her record.
----
* ACupAngst: She's not proud of her chest size, as shown when doing some SkinshipGrope on Saori in Episode 5. In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', the version of herself that has grown up (Mako is also the shortest member of Team Anglerfish) also has a large pair of breasts.
* AloofAlly: She's in Tankery strictly for the extra credits and ThePardon. She owes Miho one, too.
* AnimalMotifs: She's got tones of being catlike in her; the aloofness, the naps in sunshine, etc.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: Saori reminds Mako that she can either join Tankery class and earn ThePardon (which will cancel out her tardiness demerits), or refuse and repeat a grade due to being constantly LateForSchool.
* BadassDriver: She drives a Panzer IV the way [[InitialD Takumi Fujiwara]] drives a Trueno.
* BlueWithShock: In OVA 3, when her agoraphobia kicked in after climbing the pinnacle of the ship. The girls sans Saori wonder if she's ill.
* BrilliantButLazy: Mako is one of the smartest girls in ÅŒarai who can learn tank driving just by reading the manual. However, she hates getting up early and is generally unmotivated due to "low blood pressure".
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Mako is always at the top of her grade and can learn to drive a tank ''just by reading the manual'', but anyone who wants her to work for them must deal with lethargy. Luckily for them, her fear of her grandmother outweighs her distaste for waking up early.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Saori; they've known each for a long time, indeed, long enough for Saori to know about her grandmother.
* DeadpanSnarker:
** Towards Midoriko Sono, aka [[InSeriesNickname "Sodoko"]]. During episode 8, after being asked to train Sodoko's team on how to drive the Char B1, Sodoko gets a little snooty, upset at the prospect of having to ask Mako for help, and tells Reizei to train them thoroughly. Reizei responds by saying "hai hai" (Japanese for "yes"). Sodoko tells her not to say it twice, so Reizei says it once, but then stretches it out...
** While the rest of Anglerfish Team is protesting Erika's mockery of Miho, and Miho sits there passively, Mako chimes in to remark about how humiliating it would be for those in the "ivory tower" to be beaten by a team they thought were unworthy of participating in a tournament.
* TheDragAlong: Mako would rather not be doing this tank thing; Saori does the dragging by reminding her of the pardon.
* DramaticDrop: Drops her cell phone after hearing about [[spoiler:her grandmother being hospitalized]].
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Miho first saw her running LateForSchool and heard her record. Her kinder side is foreshadowed when she apologizes to Miho for imposing on her and promises to make it up to her someday.
* FallingIntoTheCockpit: In Episode 3. Mako takes over driving the tank after Hana gets knocked out briefly after they take a hit.
* FlatWhat: Her response when being told about upcoming morning practices.
* TheGlomp: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjgaY01kKYQ Gives one to Sodoko after]] [[spoiler:she erases her record once they win the tournament]].
* HiddenDepths: She's shown to be helpful despite her aloof disposition, and also shows a lot of concern for her grandmother, and, according to Saori, about Miho's family situation.
* ImplausibleDeniability: Immediately after her DramaticDrop of her cell phone, tries to say the phone call was nothing important.
* InSeriesNickname: Sodoko counterattacks at being called so by Mako, by calling her "Remako", except nobody followed suit, so she switches back to calling her [[LastNameBasis by her last name]].
* InstantExpert: Episode 3. Mako, without previous tank driving experience, manages to do it after briefly glancing at the manual. This is lampshaded by some members of Duck Team (anime) and Sodoko (manga) when she tries to teach it to them, without taking into account how long it would take ordinary people to learn.
-->'''Sodoko''': ''"Don't screw with me! You think it's normal to know how to do it just after looking at the manual?"''
* KindheartedCatLover: Her cellphone has cat purrs as ringtone. One can argue that a cat is also her character motif, since she's just like a cat, and is shown sleepily poking her head out of the tank in front of a cat in the opening. In the manga, Saori even calls Mako and Sodoko "like cat and dog".
* LateForSchool: 235 times and counting when she was introduced, which increases to 251 late arrivals, 12 unexcused absences and 5 excused absences as of the finals. It's easier to count the number of days Mako ''isn't'' late for school.
* MaliciousMisnaming: Often calls Sodoko by her nickname against her wishes, although she's not the only one to do so.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: Saori says Mako had a fight with her mother the last time she saw her.
* NotAMorningPerson: The very idea of getting up around 5:00-6:00 AM is anathema to her, as the quotation above shows.
* OhCrap: Anytime Saori says that she will tell her grandmother about her slacking off.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** She's typically cool-headed at best and lethargic at worst. When she hears about [[spoiler:her grandmother collapsing]], she becomes determined to get there, even considering ''swimming an impossible distance'' if necessary. [[spoiler:It also comes to the point that the perpetually sleepy Mako has been losing sleep over her grandmother.]]
** After the finals, in response to [[spoiler:Sodoko clearing her truancy record, she lets out a whoop and [[TheGlomp glomps]] her]].
* PunnyName: "Reizei" sounds a lot in Japanese like "lazy".
* TheQuietOne: Compared to the rest of Anglerfish Team, since she rarely speaks in a given scene that doesn't specifically involve her. This is lampshaded by her {{Tsundere}} grandmother.
-->'''Hisako:''' ''"You're always too quiet, like some anti-social!"''
* RaisedByGrandparents: Mako's parents died when she was in elementary school.
* ShameIfSomethingHappened[=/=]ShutUpHannibal: Her retort to Erika's TrashTalk:
-->'''Erika''': ''"There's an unspoken rule that everyone knows: schools that will just embarrass Tankery stay out of the tournament."''
-->'''Mako:''' ''"[[ShameIfSomethingHappened It'd sure be pretty embarrassing if]] [[SpannerInTheWorks one of those teams beat the veterans that all sat around in their ivory towers coming up with that rule]]."''
* SitcomArchnemesis: Sodoko seems to see her as this most of the time.
* SkinshipGrope: Mako is [[FunnyBackgroundEvent shown testing Saori's assets]] while Miho is getting measured for the new uniforms.
* TheSmartGirl: She's got the best grades, and can learn to drive ''anything'' by just ''reading the manual''.
* TheStoic: Most of the time, due to her [[NotAMorningPerson lethargic behavior.]]
** NotSoStoic: She drops her phone in shock and tries to swim an impossible distance to [[spoiler:visit her injured grandmother]], and after the finals [[spoiler:she [[TheGlomp glomps]] Sodoko after the latter [[ThePardon forgives her truancy record]].]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality: As Miho points out, despite seeming more aloof than the other girls, her interactions with her grandmother and willingness to help Sodoko show a warmer side. Her reaction to [[spoiler:Miho saving Rabbit Team]] is more understated than most, but her smile is proof that she's impressed.
* VitriolicBestBuds: She has some indications of this with Saori, since she doesn't hesitate to snark at Saori, often over her lower intelligence, but they care a great deal for each other.
* [[WellDoneSonGuy "Well Done Granddaughter" Gal]]: It's implied that in spite of her bickering with her grandmother, she isn't just scared of her temper, but wants her to be proud of her. Her image song also shows her fear of disappointing her.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Fears ghosts, heights and, above all, her grandmother Hisako more than she fears being held back.

----
* {{Determinator}}: They run on guts. They won't flee. They won't stop. Should they retreat, it ''will'' be to [[DefensiveFeintTrap lure enemy units into a trap]], and they'll do it firing all the way. They have a GoalInLife, and as Noriko explains...
-->''"I'll be damned if I give up here!"'' (While surrounded by multiple late-war German heavy tanks and tank destroyers)
* DumbJock: They're sensitive about being perceived as this, and in ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', express a desire to perform well in the sports test to erase the shame of how badly they did on the quiz.
* HeroicWillpower: Duck Team believes in this. For example, during the finals...
-->'''Noriko:''' ''(While tank is engaged in [[CarFu Tank Fu]])'' ''"Push it back with your willpower!"''\\
'''Taeko:''' ''"Great idea, but not very plausible"''.
* NoodleIncident: It's unclear why their team was disbanded, though it might be related to [[spoiler:ÅŒarai's impending shutdown]].
* ThemeNaming: All the girls are named after members of the gold-medal winning Japanese Olympic volleyball team during Tokyo 1964.
* TheSmartGuy: Of ÅŒarai tank teams. [[TheAllegedCar Because the Type 89 is so bad it's a running gag]], they have to resort to guile and subterfuge instead of direct combat. Their usual role is scouting and acting as bait.

* CompanionCube: The reason it's given an entry in the ''characters'' page.
* FragileSpeedster: In a [[ArtisticLicense notable aversion of the original tank's performance]] (top ''road'' speed comparable to the ''cross-country'' speed of other tanks), it is consistently portrayed as having retreating as its only defense. The "fragile" part is dead-on.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Throughout the series, the Type 89 has garnered ''zero'' kills in direct combat, yet it is pivotal in every one of ÅŒarai's victories.

* {{Bifauxnen}}: Short hair, wears shorts and a tee shirt, and AA-cup breasts. If it wasn't for the fact she's a student at an all-girls school, you might think Noriko was a boy.
* BoyishShortHair: Rather than keep it tied or put up like her friends, Noriko just ops to cut most of her hair that goes below the ears.
* ChekhovsSkill: She uses her volleyball serving skills to loft smoke flares at the Saunders flag tank.
* GenkiGirl: Along with GUTS comes plenty of energy!
* HotBlooded: The team's motto is "GUTS!", and she's TheLeader. Unlike Miho's methodical and Anzu's hands-off approaches, she takes a very active role in leading her team.
* IKnowMaddenKombat: Tosses smoke flares with great accuracy, due to experience with volleyballs.
* OlderThanSheLooks: She's the only second year in the Duck Team, but you won't know that when she stands beside her teammates, who not only tower over her, but also have fuller figures.

That's right: her tank is driven by the very power of ''[[CatchPhrase guts]]''.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Drifts and weaves all over the place, including hitting trees. Against Pravda, it's more like "Drives Like Their Lives Depended on It".

!![=StuG III=]
The Historical Team[=/=]Hippo Team's tank, as well as the tank Maho uses in her training match with Miho in ''Little Army''.
* SimpleYetAwesome: Historically, the [=StuG III=] was [[TanksButNoTanks not a tank]], but an infantry-support assault gun vehicle (which is mentioned twice in the show). Take a tank chassis, remove that fancy turret, replace it with [[{{BFG}} a gun bigger than a turreted vehicle of comparable size could carry]],and send it to the front lines to blow stuff up; nothing fancy about it. They discovered that said big gun and low profile made them frighteningly effective tank killers.
* BlingOfWar: In Episodes 1-4, the [=StuG III=] is painted in a mix of red and yellow, with mountains against a blue sky, historical quotes and side-mounted ''sashimonos''.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: As an exercise for the reader, read BlingOfWar above and contrast it with the references to low profile in SimpleYetAwesome also above. [[spoiler:The sashimonos ''royally'' screw up [[IdiotBall the team's attempt to sneak past a low fence]], and a Matilda blew them up by firing through the fence.]]
* LogicalWeakness: The lack of a rotating turret means the only way to hit anything behind or to the side of the tank is to turn around. [[spoiler:While Miho was saving Rabbit Team from the river]], the [=StuG III=] is unable to return fire for this reason. Miho considers exploiting this in the practice match with Maho, but realizes that [[DangerouslyGenreSavvy the latter would be expecting this]].

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/GUP_RabbitSmall_3569.png
->''"[[NewMeat Everybody from the Nationals, please be gentle to us~]]" [[GratuitousEnglish LET'S A GO]]''

A team of six freshmen driving the American [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_Lee M3 Lee]] tank. The girls themselves form the single largest concentration of cuties in the show. They are also fans of old movies and TV shows.
----
* BadassAdorable: All the girls (particularly the ÅŒarai squadettes) certainly fit the bill, but special mention goes to the Rabbit girls for leaning more on the "adorable" part. [[spoiler:The Kuromorimine match proves the "badass" part of Badass Adorable]]).
* ButtMonkey: They get more than their share of bad luck.
** In Episode 3, they try to run, but their track happens to be on a slick patch - this is on a ship where even a wooden suspension bridge is specifically covered with steel plate for tank usage and tough enough to take direct shell hits - causing the track to get stuck and snap.
** In OVA 2, their attempt to sneak in dinner a little early turns into a conflagration.
** In Episode 5, they demonstrate reasonable basic skills in reconnaissance for their first try, but [[spoiler:fall victim to Alisa's radio-interception (and also Alisa's skill in coordinating the movements of the two converging platoons)]]. They also made the correct fire distribution decision when engaging Saunder's "Charlie" and "Dog" tanks, but it is nullified because they missed the other tank. (After this, the enemy tanks' armor and firepower rapidly increase, so that was their last chance to get a ''conventional'' kill).
** In Episode 7, they [[spoiler:find the Tiger(P), but they get lost first.]]
* TheChick: Their symbol is a pink bunny [[KillerRabbit holding a pair of knives]].
* [[spoiler:IWillOnlySlowYouDown: Tried this when their tank's engine failed while crossing a river during the battle against Kuromorimine. [[NoOneGetsLeftBehind Operative word being "try".]]]]
* KillerRabbit: Their logo, along with [[spoiler:taking out two late-war heavy tank destroyers by themselves in the final episode.]]
* TheMovieBuff: All six of them. See ShoutOut.
* ShoutOut: Given their hobby, they make ''lots'' of them. It's unclear if they are intentional by the girls or not. A partial list includes:
** Film/{{Jaws}} -- Their choice of swimsuits in OVA 1.
** Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail -- Their KillerRabbit logo.
** Series/MontyPythonsFlyingCircus -- The [=*PAM=] scene in OVA 2.
** Film/KellysHeroes -- Episode 10's "bonding night" and [[spoiler:"Operation Kelly's Heroes" in Episode 12]].
** JackieChan films -- Karina's CarFu over a rival tank at close quarters in Episode 12, with Chan's old "mutual toe stepping" gag.
** Film/OperationPetticoat -- PINK tank vs PINK submarine.
* ThemeNaming: All named after members of the Japanese women's football team who won the 2011 World Cup.
* TookALevelInBadass: Their courage and performance (or lack thereof, in both cases) in the first two battles are a joke. However, come the tournament they have become brave and effective, [[spoiler: culminating in their takedown of two of the heaviest tank destroyers in history during the finals]].
----

!!M3 Lee
* BoringButPractical: Historically, the M3 Lee was only an interim design to quickly get a 75mm-armed tank on the field as soon as possible, but managed to attain remarkably good performance, given its limitations. Within ÅŒarai, it is used as a "poor man's [=StuG III=]", sometimes joining the latter in tank hunting (even dealing the final blow to the first Saunders tank to get [[TheresNoKillLikeOverkill caught in an ambush]]), plus [[spoiler: taking over when the [=StuG III=] is taken out in the FinalBattle.]]
* CompanionCube: The reason it's given an entry in the ''characters'' page. This is best exemplified by the following lines, uttered after it is damaged in battle:
-->''"The poor panzer!"''
-->''"Should we put a [[AmusingInjuries band-aid]] on it?"''
* PinkMeansFeminine: The reason the girls paint it solid pink early in the series.

->'''Position:''' Tank Commander
->'''Voiced by:''' Hitomi Takeuchi (Japanese), Allison Sumrall (English)

Leader of Rabbit Team and tank commander.
----
* TheLeader: Tank commander
* MamaBear: Described by Yukari as the "protective mother" to TheTeam. She is ''shown'' to be it in Episode 12.
* OnlySaneMan: When she was fixing the tank in Episode 9, the others were debating putting a band-aid for the broken gun instead of helping her.
%%** During OVA 2.
* TookALevelInBadass: She ''volunteers'' her team for a search-and-destroy mission against [[TheresNoKillLikeOverkill late-war German heavy tank destroyers]]. Miho wisely ''[[spoiler:agrees]]''.
----

!!Karina Sakaguchi
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garupan_karina_7712.png
->'''Position:''' Driver
->'''Voiced by:''' Konomi Tada (Japanese), MonicaRial (English)

The erratic driver of Rabbit Team.
----
* BadassDriver: When you can do JackieChan style movies in a tank, you qualify.
* TheDitz: Such as when she says tanks are strong but no match for monsters like Godzilla as though it is a deeply profound thought.
* DontThinkFeel: In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', Miho tries to teach her some driving techniques, which go in one ear and out the other. When they get into the tank, Karina does a good job and comments that she didn't think about it.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: This is how she started. Her competence dips when she panicks.
* GunFu: Of the "use your gun to move their gun aside" variety.
* [[CarFu Tank Fu]]: Of the JackieChan variety, to boot. Unsurprising, given the team's hobbies.

----
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: She ranks among ÅŒarai's fastest loaders.
* LapPillow: To Karina in ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu''.
* LetsGetDangerous: She's shown to be [[AwesomeByAnalysis a very good observer]]. [[spoiler:That ''one'' time she decided to share the information was a ''literal'' PreAsskickingOneLiner]].
* TheVoiceless: Until the final episode, she had no lines, and is described as "a good listener". She doesn't even have a voice actress listed in the credits.
----

!!Aya Oono
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garupan_aya_4127.png
->'''Position: Gunner, 37mm Cannon
->'''Voiced by:''' Chuna (Japanese), Juliet Simmons (English)

One of the two gunners for Rabbit Team.
----
* GirlishPigtails: Sports two big ones thicker than Anzu's and just as long.
%%* {{Meganekko}}
* OnlySaneWoman: During the (manga only) fight against Anzio, she takes the Char B1 along with Yukari and Erwin. With two LargeHam history-buffs who spout historically doomed expeditions when they're caught in a bad situation as teammates, she's definitely the most sane girl in that tank.
* PrecisionFStrike: It may just be an artifact of translation, but when facehugging the Jadgtiger...
-->''"That [[{{BFG}} 128mm]] is f***ing scary."''
* TookALevelInBadass: Scores many direct hits in the FinalBattle.
* VoiceWithAnInternetConnection: Played with. Her attempts to get tank driving instructions off the internet [[{{Troll}} failed spectacularly]]- one person told her "Google it!" and another tried to trick her into taking her clothes off. At least she was smart enough to ignore the suggestion given to her.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Grade-A (and two-thirds of whats needed for a Grade-S!)
----

!Team E/Turtle Team
http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/GUP_TurtleSmall_8241.png
-->''"[[GloryHound The Goal: VICTORY!]]"''

Composed of the three highest-ranking members of ÅŒarai's Student Council, Turtle Team drives a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_38%28t%29 Pz38(t)]], a Czech light tank. In Episode 10, it is [[MidSeasonUpgrade converted into]] a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hetzer Jagdpanzer 38(t) ''Hetzer'']].
----
* TheLancer: Within ÅŒarai's teams, as the de facto second-in-command in battle, and overall team commander outside of it. [[spoiler:They are also able to kick some ass -- ''if'' Anzu is feeling like it.]]
* NonindicativeName: Hilariously, for a ''Turtle'' team, [=38(t)=] is [[FragileSpeedster reasonably fast and thin-skinned.]] No longer the case after they upgrade to a [[GlacierWaif Hetzer]].
* SecretKeeper: [[spoiler:Until Episode 9, only they know that the school's survival depends on them winning the tournament.]]
* ThemeNaming: All named after fruits.
----

!![=Panzer 38(t)=]/[=JagdPanzer 38(t)=] "Hetzer"
* ArtisticLicense: See below in the FragileSpeedster entry.
* CompanionCube: The reason it's given an entry in the ''characters'' page.
* BlingBlingBang: Taken to a ''[[UpToEleven ludicruous]]'' extreme in Episodes 2 to 4, where the tank is painted ''[[GoldMakesEverythingShiny shiny solid gold]]'', [[PlayedForLaughs complete with]] multiple {{lens flare}}s and [[AudibleSharpness "shaheen!"]] noises. {{Lampshaded}} mercilessly in Episode 3, where the tank is shown to shine so much it [[ColorWash tints the screen yellow]]... while [[FunnyBackgroundEvent Momo is pontificating about the virtues of stealth]].
* FragileSpeedster: The 38(t) is constantly [[ArtisticLicense portrayed as such]], even though its top speed is only 2 km/h greater than the [=Panzer IV's=], and its armor is comparable to that of the [=Panzer IV D's=].
* GlacierWaif: The turretless Hetzer is even smaller than the original 38(t), yet carries the same gun and almost as much armor as the [=Stug III=].
* MidSeasonUpgrade: The 38(t) gets upgraded to a [[GlacierWaif Hetzer]] prior to the Finals.
* [[spoiler:MortalWoundReveal: The Hetzer shuts down from damage sustained from driving itself under the Maus.]]
* PowerupFullColorChange: Played completely straight when it receives its final upgrade for the FinalBattle, it's given [[ShownTheirWork that model's most common historical paint pattern]] instead of keeping its usual color.

!!Anzu Kadotani

->'''Position:''' Tank Commander/Radio Operator/[[spoiler:Gunner (since Episode 9)]]
->'''Voiced by:''' MisatoFukuen (Japanese), Rozie Curtis (English)

StudentCouncilPresident of ÅŒarai and the chief architect behind its Tankery class's revival after two decades of inactivity, as well as leader of Turtle Team.
----
* AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil: As President, she can threaten Miho, Hana and Saori with expulsion for refusing to participate in Tankery. [[spoiler:[[JerkassFacade After all, when your beloved alma mater is on the verge of a shutdown, there's nothing you won't do to save it]].]]
* BluntYes: When asked if she doesn't know where the tanks might be found, she cheerfully says that she does not.
* BrilliantButLazy: A very active girl in her position, who somehow always seems to be the least busy in any scene.
* CannotSpitItOut: Invites Miho to dinner to tell her that [[spoiler:ÅŒarai will be shut down unless they win the tournament]], but can't bring herself to do so.
* CasualDangerDialogue: Her reaction to her tank throwing out a track under fire? Offhandedly lecture her teammates about that being a recurrent problem in an otherwise reliable tank.
* [[spoiler:CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Always seen slouching and munching sweet potatoes, but is quite capable behind the Panzer's guns.]]
* [[spoiler:CurseCutShort: Her reaction upon being fired upon as she was trying to attack Kuromorimine for the ''third'''time in a row.]]
* DidntThinkThisThrough: She admits that she overestimated ÅŒarai's available tanks and other resources for winning the tournament, [[spoiler:but couldn't think of any other ideas to keep the school open]].
* [[spoiler:DoNotGoGentle: Part of her reason for making the deal to keep ÅŒarai open if it wins the tournament is that she doesn't want to spend an entire year waiting for ÅŒarai to shut down, but to be able to have hope.]]
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: Has them at times in the manga in more serious moments, such as [[spoiler:confirming Momo's statement that the tournament determines ÅŒarai's fate]].
* TheExtremistWasRight: In order to revive a Tankery program 20 years dead, she resorts to extreme actions such as offering tremendous incentives (just one of them is 200 excused absences) and drafts Miho (the only Tankery veteran) despite her trauma, even letting her think that she'll be expelled if she doesn't. She is vindicated by enough new members to fill four tanks and Miho becoming invaluable to TheTeam in addition to reclaiming her love of Tankery. [[spoiler: If your beloved school was threatened with shut-down, you'd resort to extreme action too.]]
* TheGadfly: If her [[http://www.batoto.net/read/_/216449/girls-und-panzer-motto-love-love-sakusen-desu_ch8_by_ak-scanlations/13 grin in Chapter 8]] of the ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' spin-off is to be taken into account, she may have masterminded some of the gifts that Kuromorimine's Tankery team received for Christmas.
* GirlishPigtails: In keeping with her relaxed nature and in contrast with her serious position.
* GiverOfLameNames: While Momo laments the nicknames given to their various tanks, which are named after animals, Anzu simply says the names sounded cute and rolls with it.
* [[spoiler:ImprobableAimingSkills: When she takes over the 38(t)'s gun in Episode 9, she hardly misses!]]
* ImpersonationGambit: What she does to put [[spoiler:Kuromorimine's siege line in the FinalBattle]] in disarray.
* {{Jerkass}}[=/=]JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Acts manipulative and high-horsed at first, but deep down she shows genuine concern for her schoolmates and their ''alma mater''.
* LetsGetDangerous: The first time she does something during a match proves she can hold her own against the best.
* MasterOfTheMixedMessage: She remarks to Miho that she "[[ExactWords won't be attending school for long]]" unless she joins Tankery class, which Saori and Hana interpret as expulsion. [[spoiler:Turns out she is referring to ÅŒarai itself, which would shut down unless it wins the upcoming tournament, thus Anzu ''badly'' needed Miho's experience and training. In a later conversation with Miho, Anzu admits that she had to be vague because she doesn't want Miho to worry too much during her first year at ÅŒarai.]] Depending on the translation, though, her statement is sometimes rendered as an explicit threat of expulsion.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Lampshaded in the manga by Yukari when Anzu stopped smiling and said that defeat is not an option.
* PerpetualSmiler[=/=][[spoiler:StepfordSmiler]]: She's almost always optimistic and cheerful, [[spoiler: but she has to be to avoid falling to despair at the insurmountable challenge of saving the school.]]
* StudentCouncilPresident: Her status as this makes her the nominal leader of the Tankery team starting off. [[spoiler: It's also how she was able to swing the deal to save the school.]]
* SupremeChef: As mentioned in Episode 8 and shown in OVA 2.
* TheGlomp: Gives one to Miho [[spoiler:after thanking her for saving the school from closure.]]
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: Doesn't seem to do her jobs, either in the student council office or inside the tank. [[spoiler:When she does takes the helm, she shows how effective she can be...]]
* TokenMiniMoe: The shortest ÅŒarai team member at a mere 142cm tall.
* TookALevelInKindness: In spite of her initial laziness and seeming abuse of her authority, she, after putting a HumiliatingWager on Anglerfish team, joins in it as well after they lose, since she admits she's also responsible for their loss. She also [[spoiler:decides not to tell Miho about what is at stake]] because she doesn't want Miho to feel burdened.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Always seen eating dried sweet potatoes.

The much put-upon Vice-President of ÅŒarai's Student Council as well as the driver of Turtle Team.
----
* BadassDriver: Rivals Mako when cornered. During the match against Pravda, she puts speed into Tankery!
* BeleagueredAssistant: She's the only one doing any physical work at the council while Anzu lounges around and Momo barks orders.
* MsFanservice: Somehow wound up washing her team's Panzer 38(t) in a two-piece bikini in Episode 2.
* NiceGirl: She's polite and courteous to others, is visibly uncomfortable with Anzu's attempt to pressgang Miho into the tankery team [[spoiler:even if she knows why Anzu is doing it]], and is openly appreciative of Miho's more compassionate approach to Tankery.
* RunningGag
-->''"Momo, you've missed!"''
* SayingTooMuch: When Miho remained adamant about her refusal to join Tankery class even with pressure from Anzu, Yuzu hysterically cries that their school's "finished". Neither Miho nor her friends pick up on that, possibly taking it as an exaggeration. -->'''Yuzu''': ''"[[RunningGag Momo, you missed!]]"''
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: Taller and more stoic than her fellows in the Student Council. Also the only one with dark hair. However, the stoic part goes away as soon as she steps into a tank.
* AttackAttackAttack: Momo's preferred method of combat, though she's not very good at it.
-->''"Fire back! Fire till the tank falls apart!"''
* BerserkButton: Several.
** Someone calling her "Momo-chan".
** Students saying they don't think they can win the tournament or that they don't care whether they do.
* TheBerserker: Momo is... {{trigger happy}}. Aiming is optional and is [[FriendOrFoe friendly fire]] a possibility.
* TheComicallySerious: Her poor aim wouldn't be as funny if she weren't so serious.
* [[spoiler:CryCute: Finally breaks down crying like a little kid at the finale, while trying to thank Miho for winning the tournament and saving ÅŒarai. This even carries onto their victory parade in the ending.]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: When she screws up Miho's carefully planned ambush.
* HighClassGlass: Wears half a pair of glasses as a monocle.
* HotBlooded: She's hot-tempered and fiercely determined to win the tournament.
* KnuckleCracking: In the sixth OVA, as Hippo Team kept on inserting historical references into their production of LittleWomen.
* MsFanservice: Although not that well-endowed compared to Yuzu, her swimsuit in the first OVA shows quite a lot of skin.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Momo blows ÅŒarai's careful ambush by firing at ''Miho'' instead of St. Gloriana tanks. This tips off the latter to the ambush, and they respond in kind.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: She's typically either stoic or flying off the handle about something. She rarely gets genuinely upset unless [[spoiler:the subject of the school possibly shutting down comes up]].
* PerpetualFrowner: In contrast to Anzu, who never stops smiling, she always looks unhappy.
* PungeonMaster: When not in battle -- and [[IncrediblyLamePun lame ones]], at that.
* TheStoic: She usually appears as a no-nonsense and tacturn girl.
** NotSoStoic: She also tends to become really excitable ([[TriggerHappy particularly when behind the gun]]) and [[spoiler:is prone to crying a lot]].
* TriggerHappy: Not only does she start an ambush early, before the enemy are in the killzone, she fires ''on a friendly tank''.
* TsurimeEyes: Her eyes are sharp and upturned in accorance with her serious personality.
* WhamLine
-->''"What are you saying? [[spoiler:Our school's gone if we lose!]]"''
* WhenSheSmiles: In Episode 8, Anzu shows a picture of her with a big grin on her face and Yuzu immediately finds it cutely nostalgic. She also smiles in OVA 2, prompting a reaction from Yuzu that results in Momo immediately trying to deny that she did.

Three girls [[ChekhovsGunman first seen in the opening]], the members of the Public Morals Committee take over crew duties for the French [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Char_B1_bis Char B1 bis]] from Yukari, Erwin and Aya beginning with their match against Pravda. Collectively, they serve as TheSixthRanger, joining Tankery right before the match.
----
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: All three of them. [[OnlySixFaces Art style aside]], they share the same short black hair and voice actress. This may be justified. Being part of the Disciplinary Committee, they have to stand as an example of cohesion for the rest of the student body, hence the similar hairdos.
** Lampshaded in the sixth OVA, where in a "Hidden Talent Contest" they perform a multiplication trick which consists of Gomoyo and Pazomi stepping out from behind Sodoko.
** In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', it is revealed that there are more than 100 members on the Disciplinary Committee, who ''all'' look like Sodoko with slight variations (for example, one has a BlushSticker, another has EyesAlwaysShut and so forth).
-->'''Mako''': ''"Seeing Sodoko gathered like this feels bad."''
* SelfDeprecation: In the 6th OVA, they make fun of the fact that they all look alike.
* TheSixthRanger: They join the Tankery Team in time for the Pravda fight.
* SchoolSwimsuit: The three of them wear theirs in ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', and Sodoko, being a stickler for the rules, believes the other girls should do the same.
* ThemeNaming: For Sodom and Gommorah, directly or indirectly, chosen for intentional {{Irony}}.
* [[ThoseTwoGuys Those Three Girls]]: They are minor characters and indistingushable except for one or two traits. This is why their FandomNickname is "Sodoko Collective".

* StoneWall: The tank's thick armor, and how it was historically [[NoSell durable enough to continue functioning despite multiple hits over long battles]], is often mentioned (even openly discussed in Episode 10.5) and the tank is portrayed as such, [[ArtisticLicense even if that only would apply against the smaller weapons of early-war designs]]. ----
* BerserkButton: Has a few pet peeves -- rule-breakers, arrogant people, or being called "Sodoko" (though her friends on the disciplinary committee may be an exception).
* ButtMonkey: She's never taken seriously by the rest of the student body, which gets on her nerves.
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: When Mako climbs into their tank to help TheTeam get up a hill in the match with Pravda, she complains about her getting into another team's tank without asking.
* DeathGlare: In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', she gives one to Miho when she [[WhatTheHellHero complains about the harshness of the new rules]], and then forces her to dye her hair.
* GungHolierThanThou: Insists that everyone follow the rules and often complains about freshmen wearing makeup or the Hippo Team's costumes. She says that Tankery, as an elective, is bound by school rules. No one pays her any mind.
-->''"This is a ''class''."''
* IGaveMyWord: [[spoiler:At the finale, she deletes all records of Mako's truancy, fulfilling one of the stipulated [[ThePardon benefits]] of joining Tankery, as well as a promise she made late in the battle. Cue [[TheGlomp glomp]] from Mako.]]
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: Of the trio, she can be identified by her chin-length hair.
* InSeriesNickname: "Sodoko". Most people call her that; even the very polite Miho refers to her as "Sodoko-[[JapaneseHonorifics san]]" in Episode 10.5.
* OhCrap: After noticing that her SchoolSwimsuit has her nickname instead of her last name.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Gomoyo's blue in her short temper concerning rule-breakers.
* SitcomArchnemesis: Versus Mako because of her chronic tradiness.
* TheyCallMeMisterTibbs: Really hates her nickname, especially when it's Mako who is calling her that. Interestingly enough, [[spoiler:after the Char B1 bis gets flipped over by the Maus]], she and the others report in with them.
* TyrantTakesTheHelm: In Chapter 6 of ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', she gets the chance to exercise her authority to the fullest extent and goes mad with power, even cracking down on the girls' hair colors and styles.

* HairDecorations: Wears a cat-ear hairband as a reflection of the "Neko" in her name. It's also a form of AluminumChristmasTrees, since a bioelectrically-controllable hairband with that exact design exists in RealLife.
* HoldingOutForAHero: Specifically defies it, as she offers to [[EleventhHourRanger join the team to help them any way she could]], even before knowing if there was a tank available.
* HugeSchoolgirl: Stands 168cm, though she's conscious about it, so she tends to lean forward a bit to reduce her profile.
* OpaqueNerdGlasses: All the time, even at school. As shown by the opening animation, it's likely to hide the fact that she looks like a character straight out of a LeijiMatsumoto series.
* RapunzelHair: Has the longest hair of anyone in the cast, all the way down to her hips.
* ShrinkingViolet: She walks up to Miho and makes her request to join the team with a quavering voice and fidgeting fingers, indicating that she's fairly nervous.

!!Porsche Tiger
* [[TheAllegedCar The Alleged Tank]]: The Tiger(P) might have the best gun and thickest armor out of ÅŒarai's tanks, but it is horribly prone to mechanical failures. In rapid succession, it gets stuck in mud, overheats, and ''catches fire''. The Automobile Club's [[SeenItAll reaction]] says it all.
* AwesomeButImpractical: In RealLife, the tank was found to be ridden with too many mechanical defects to be used in battle. Contrast with DifficultButAwesome below.

* DramaticDrop: Drops her teacup in the middle of the battle, as a sign of facing pressure from ÅŒarai.

* ProperLady: Polite, dignified, dresses modestly and drinks tea with impeccable poise.
* SpiritedCompetitor: She plays to win but doesn't turn tankery into SeriousBusiness like Kuromorinmine.
* SpotOfTea: Drinks tea out of elegant china ''while riding in a tank''.
* StiffUpperLip: Has no qualms watching the ÅŒarai-Pravda match out in the open, despite how cold everyone else finds it.

Saunders' leader and commander of an [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_Sherman M4 Sherman]] during the Saunders-ÅŒarai match.
----
* BadassCreed: See her quote above. Let's put it in perspective: in a world where Tankery is SeriousBusiness enough to justify [[spoiler: disowning one's daughter over preferring lives to victories]], she firmly believes the [[LetsFightLikeGentlemen opposite]]. She utters it only once, so it could be a BadassBoast, but she then she lectures [[spoiler:Miho]] about it, after having behaved that way all the battle [[spoiler:and before and after it]], making clear it's a creed and not a boast.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:Saves Alice from ÅŒarai's pursuit.]]
* BoisterousBruiser: Typically American boisterousness combined with a typical American 30-ton war machine leads to this.
* CavalierCompetitor: Being spied upon? No biggie. Losing first blood to the enemy? Surprising, but interesting! For her, tank combat is ''fun''.
-->''"Exciting!"''
-->''"That's'' Tankery!"''
* {{Eagleland}}: Not actually American, but she represents Type 1 as the friendly sportsman with a lot of firepower.
* {{Foil}}: Nicely contrasts with Anchovy, given that she's laidback and enjoys exciting matches, while Anchovy values victory above all else. This is nicely emphasized in that Kay's match is shown in the anime, while Anchovy's in the manga.
* GenkiGirl: Her energy during a match (or outside a match) is unrivaled in her team.
* [[spoiler: GracefulLoser: Embraces Miho after her loss to ÅŒarai, then teaches the latter her creed.]]
* GratuitousEnglish: Liberally sprinkles her speeches with American English.
* InformedAttribute: Darjeeling's claim that Saunders often uses "dirty tactics" becomes this after Kay is shown in action, unless Darjeeling somehow knew about [[spoiler:Alice intercepting radio communications]].
* [[LetsFightLikeGentlemen Let's Fight Like Ladies]]: Only pursues ÅŒarai with four tanks, because [[spoiler:one of her teammates was intercepting their radio transmissions]].
-->''"This is ''Tankery'', not war."''
* LargeHam: A genki girl that loves her sport in a sherman tank? Yes, this is the result.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: While [[GenkiGirl genuinely energetic]], she becomes stern and subdued while telling Alice that she wants a word with her regarding [[spoiler:her radio tapping, which ended up backfiring and costing them the match]].
* PassThePopcorn: Munches on a nice container of the stuff in Episode 12 watching the battle with Miho and Maho. Justified because it is a sporting event.
* PhenotypeStereotype: Like Darjeeling, she has the Anglo-Saxon blue eyes and blonde hair gig going for her. Her hair is more strawberry blonde as opposed to Darjeeling's paler color to give off the more wild American vibe.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Believes in the concept of fair play and condemns dirty tricks like [[spoiler:radio interception]].
* WhoWearsShortShorts: She does, and so do the rest of Saunders as part of their combat uniforms. Their school clothes are more typical, just in West Point Grey.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Grade-B in contrast to Darjeeling's full tights. Again, this is for the 'wild american' vibe.

* BoyishShortHair: This is how it looks in comparison to her superior's longer air.
* ChewBubblegum: While blasting away, she's chewing gum. She even runs out of gum right before kicking [[spoiler:Anglerfish's]] ass.
* FriendlySniper: Down three ÅŒarai tanks with her Firefly.
* FunbagAirbag: When she slumps back in her seat with a "sigh" at the end of their onscreen battle, her head finds some... [[UnusualEuphemism comfortable pillows...]] courtesy of her startled loader.
* [[spoiler:GracefulLoser: While visibly disappointed by their slim margin of defeat, she nevertheless harbors no ill will towards Ooarai at the end of the day.]]
* LadyLooksLikeADude: [[BoyishShortHair Conspicuously so]]. Outside the tank it's not so conspicuous, due to her bosom.

Saunders' third-in-command. Commands the flag tank, an [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4_Sherman_variants M4A1(76)W]], during the Saunders-ÅŒarai match.
----
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Mentions a guy she likes called "Takashi" who doesn't like her back while her tank is fleeing from Ooarai, though considering her [[VillainousBreakdown mental state]] at the time, she could have just been babbling. She also implies that [[LoveTriangle Takashi likes another girl]], but gives no indication as to whether his love is requited. It's a very cryptic ShoutOut: Hirano voiced Suzumiya Haru''hi'', and [[RumblingHearts Takayuki Narumi]] is whom Suzumiya Haru''ka'' is in love with.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: She might not be the best tank commander around and clearly needs a remedial course on good sportsmanship, but episode 5 shows why she's Saunders' Vice-Captain:
** She accurately guesses ÅŒarai's positions at the time of the radio transmission (time-distance calculation + terrain analysis), translates the very vague "leftwards direction" into a specific set of coordinates (more terrain analysis) and accurately estimates how fast Rabbit Team would get there (time-distance calculation, and it wouldn't have worked unless she got the first two approximately right). She then coordinates the movements of two platoons so the platoon moving in the open comes into view shortly before the flanking platoon moves in through the forest and counters ÅŒarai's reinforcing element by moving in Naomi's platoon (latter is not quite as impressive because her team has visual contact now, but still requires time-distance calculations). She also figured out the feasibility of withdrawing two tanks back out of commitment and into envelopment ahead of ÅŒarai's tanks (same). Keep in mind that all this was accomplished using only a radio and a map, without even seeing the battle unfold.
* BoisterousWeakling: For all her boasting, she's an ineffective tank commander. In an amusing symmetry with her calling ÅŒarai "weaklings". This is {{Discussed}} in the second recap episode (and downplayed because Miho is ''that'' [[NiceGirl nice]]).
* CombatPragmatist: She's willing to seek every advantage in battle.
* DickDastardlyStopsToCheat: Saunders had numerical superiority, better tanks and more experienced crews, but Alice just ''had'' to cheat regardless. [[spoiler: This enables ÅŒarai to turn the tables.]]
* EvilLaugh: She lets rip with one after [[spoiler:intercepting another transmission]], getting some startled looks from her crew.
* GirlishPigtails: Which make her look like a loudmouth brat after tangling with ÅŒarai.
* GutFeeling: [[BlatantLies She claims]] that her knowledge of ÅŒarai's positions comes from this.
* HoistByHerOwnPetard: [[spoiler:The reason the numerically superior Saunders units ended up out-of-position, leaving her tank at ÅŒarai's mercy and convincing Kay to bring matching numbers of tanks during their counterattack? She fell for fake communications (when Miho [[DangerouslyGenreSavvy deduced that their radio transmissions were being intercepted]]), fooling her into [[AttackAttackAttack emptying her guns without informing her allies]].]]
* LargeHam: As the subtropes will explain.
** LaughingMad: As she's running for the hills.
** ChewingTheScenery: Combining mad laughs with non-sequiturs.
* LoopholeAbuse: Technically, [[spoiler:intercepting radio transmissions]] isn't cheating, but it's not good sportsmanship either.
* MissionControl: Serves as one for Saunders and [[spoiler:helped by the radio intercepts]].
* {{Munchkin}}: Her team already had a two-one advantage in numbers, better tanks, and many more veterans, yet she still decided to [[spoiler: eavesdrop on her opponent's communications]] to further increase the odds of winning. Imagine how bad she would be in World of Tanks!
* OhCrap: After realizing Kay disapproves of her actions and wants a word with her in an [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness uncharacteristically stern tone]].
* PaperThinDisguise: [[spoiler:In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', she only uses a pair of fake sunglasses as a disguise.]]
* {{Revenge}}: [[spoiler: In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', she decides to infiltrate ÅŒarai to steal its classified information in revenge for Yukari infiltrating Saunders. However, her disguise is... less than stellar, as Leopon Team finds her suspicious immediately]].
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Depending on the translation, is "Arisa", "Alisa" or "Alice."
* UnsportsmanlikeGloating: When TheCavalry appears she goes back to her ''eeevil'' ranting.
* VillainousBreakdown: When she finds out she was outsmarted and led into a trap, she doesn't take it well and starts babbling incoherently as her tank drives for its life.
* YouthfulFreckles: Her attitude brings to mind a BrattyHalfpint who didn't grow up.

Two nameless crewmembers of Alice's flag tank during Saunders vs ÅŒarai. Left and right in the pic, respectively.
----
* BeleagueredAssistant: Crewing Alice's tank is not a cake walk.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: The "ineffectual" part being because their tank is cramped with [[spoiler:[[DickDastardlyStopsToCheat radio spying equipment]]]], to the point of the loader being unable to find her shells in a hurry.
* NoBadassToHisValet: It's clear they don't have a high opinion of Alisa's capabilities.
* NoNameGiven: Hence the fan nicknames.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: When Alice finally gets out of her VillainousBreakdown and stops distracting them, they become quite effective. {{Discussed}} by Miho in the second recap episode.
* SilentSnarker: They ''do'' speak, but most of their frustration at Alice's antics and command (or lack thereof) style is conveyed through exasperated facial expressions.
* ShowDontTell: They get lots of characterization in a very limited screen time. See SilentSnarker above.
* TheReliableOne: They fill the trope so closely that quoting verbatim the first two paragraphs of its page would accurately describe their on-screen time.

Anzio's squadron commander. Commands from a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carro_Armato_P_40 Carro Armato P 26/40]] during the quarterfinals match against ÅŒarai.
----
* BreatherEpisode: The battle against her, sandwiched between Saunders and Pravda, both highly regarded schools that pushed Ooarai onto the brink of defeat, is considerably easier. It's also PlayedForLaughs, as ÅŒarai didn't even have to fight all the way until sundown.
* ButtMonkey: Apparently, [[http://www.batoto.net/read/_/214682/girls-und-panzer-motto-love-love-sakusen-desu_ch7_by_ak-scanlations/4 Chapter 7]] of the ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' spin-off manga portrayed her as this: first, her appearance [[spoiler:during the meeting of the teams who got beaten by ÅŒarai Academy during the tournament (including St. Gloriana)]] was apparently blocked with a conveniently-placed speech bubble; second, she later got hit in the face (knocking her out in the process) by a scale model of a dragon wagon; and third, she was apparently left behind at the said meeting place, unaware that the others have left.
* DartboardOfHate: Hits a photo of Miho with a riding crop, and appears to have one of Kay posted on the same bulletin board.
* DefensiveWhat: After Miho [[ArmorPiercingQuestion asks her if she believes that her and her teammates' efforts are meaningless because they lost]].
* DrillHair: Has a couple of these as part of her MegaTwinTails.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: When Miho points out that [[ThePowerOfFriendship her bonds with her comrades]] are most important, Anchovy points out that it’s a commander’s responsibility to bring victory to them.
* {{Foil}}: Nicely contrasts with Kay, given that she's values victory above all else, while Kay prefers exciting matches. This is emphasized in that Kay's match is shown in the anime, while Anchovy's is shown in the manga. She also contrasts with Katyusha in that both look down on Miho and insult her decision to [[spoiler:save one of her tanks at the cost of the tournament win]], but while Anchovy strives for victory out of a feeling of responsibility to her comrades, Katyusha mainly does it for the sake of her own pride, and [[spoiler:Anchovy is a SoreLoser while Katyusha is a GracefulLoser]]. She also contrasts nicely with both of them in that the other two are good commanders, while she isn't.
* FullNameBasis: Likes calling Miho Nishizumi by her full name in a manner reminiscent of [[VisualNovel/AceAttorney Franziska Von Karma]], in addition to the latter’s attitude toward winning.
* GeneralFailure: Her plan to lure Oarai into a trap briefly gives her the advantage, but she gives Oarai far less trouble than their other opponents despite outnumbering them. Unlike other matches, the match doesn't go down to isolating and disabling the enemy flag tank.
* GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger: When telling Miho that she doesn't accept her way of Tankery, this trope makes the statement all the ruder.
* HiddenDepths: While obsessed with victory, she says it's a commander's obligation to her team, and as she and Carpaccio are walking away after Anzio's loss, Anchovy apologizes to her, indicating that [[ItsAllMyFault she blames herself for the loss]], in spite of her anger toward Miho and her school.
* {{Jerkass}}: Openly calls Miho's way of Tankery weak before the start of their match in the manga, and makes disparaging allusions to Miho's decision to sacrifice victory to rescue her teammates. After losing, she outright accuses Miho of [[spoiler:being responsible for her team's defeat in the last tournament finals]].
* JerkassHasAPoint: [[spoiler:ÅŒarai’s continued existence, something everyone is willing to fight to protect, rides on her team's success in the tournament, although Miho doesn’t know that and it’s unclear whether Anchovy does.]]
* JokeCharacter: The anime doesn't show the fight, just [[CurbstompBattle the result]].
* MegaTwinTails: Easily the largest set in the whole show.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: In the manga, Anzio starts out with the advantage.
* RedBaron: "Il Duce"
* SayMyName: Screams “Miho Nishizumiiiiii!” just before her defeat.
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: It's a commander's duty to bring ''first place'' to her subordinates.
* ShutUpKirk: After Miho says there are more important things than victory, namely her comrades, Anchovy tells Miho that if her comrades are so important, she should do her job as commander and win.
* SoreLoser: Doesn't take her defeat at ÅŒarai's hands well.
* VillainousBreakdown: Late in the match, and into the post-game, she freaks out.
----

!!Carpaccio
Anzio's second-in-command.
----
* GracefulLoser: In contrast to her superior.
* NumberTwo: Anzio's second-in-command.
* TheStoic: Calm and even-tempered compared to Anchovy.

The winners of last year's tournament, breaking Kuromorimine's winning streak.

->"All of you are below [[ThirdPersonPerson Katyusha]]! Your tanks, your technology and your height[[note]]She's riding on HugeSchoolgirl Nonna's shoulders[[/note]]!"

->'''Position:''' Squadron Commander/Tank Commander, T-34/85
->'''Voiced by:''' HisakoKanemoto (Japanese), Creator/HilaryHaag (English)

Pravda's commander. She commands from a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-34#T-34-85 T-34/85]] during ÅŒarai vs. Pravda.
----
* ACupAngst: In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', it's indicated that she's slightly jealous of Nonna's large breasts, as she tries to pretend she has a pair of her own.
* AnalogyBackfire: Suggests that her terms for ÅŒarai's surrender are generous because she has a heart as large as the Siberian plain. Nonna then asks her if that means her heart is extremely cold.
* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: WordOfGod (via {{Twitter}}) has it that she got her position because she fired the winning shot during last year's finals.
* BrilliantButLazy: She's a superb commander, but she'll negotiate a ceasefire so she can take a nap.
* CuteLittleFangs: They just peek out, probably accenting her cocky nature.
* DefensiveFeintTrap: She's an expert at these. ÅŒarai's DarkestHour is caused by one of them.
* EvilCounterpart: To Anzu, in a sense of the OpposingSportsTeam. Aside from a certain haughtiness (like [[spoiler:rubbing Kuromorimine's defeat last year into Miho's face)]], which is largely explained by [[TheNapoleon her own insecurities]], she's yet to display any truly evil behavior. She's also shown to be lazy and relying on her HypercompetentSidekick.
* {{Foil}}: She contrasts with Anchovy in that while both look down on Miho and insult her decision to [[spoiler:save one of her tanks at the cost of the tournament win]], Anchovy strives for victory out of a feeling of responsibility to her comrades, but Katyusha mainly does it for the sake of her own pride, and [[spoiler:Anchovy is a SoreLoser while Katyusha is a GracefulLoser]]
* FreudianExcuse: A flashback in ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'' indicates that some of her schoolmates didn't take her seriously because of her height.
* [[spoiler:GracefulLoser: Mentions that she not angry at losing to ÅŒarai.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Tends to be very bossy and arrogant, not to mention [[spoiler:rubbing the blame for Kuromorimine's loss last year to Miho]], but is nevertheless a decent kid at heart, whose attitude can be easily explained by [[NapoleonComplex her severe stature issues]].
* KneelBeforeZod: Her ultimatum to the cornered ÅŒarai. It has a FreudianExcuse.
* TheNapoleon: She's very short and is not proud of it. Sometimes she has Nonna give her a piggyback so as to appear taller.
* NoBadassToHisValet: Nina tends to make fun of Katyusha's childish tendencies when a disguised Erwin and Yukari, whom she mistakes for her seniors, bring her up.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** When congratulating ÅŒarai, she ''gets off Nonna's shoulders''.
** In ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'', after she accidentally [[EyeScream pokes Nonna in the eyes]] while trying to regain her hold on her head, she is horrified and apologizes profusely.
* RedBaron: "Snowdrift" Katyusha.
* SandInMyEyes: [[spoiler:Tried to deny to Nonna that she is about to break down crying after their semifinals loss.]]
* SweetTooth: Usually seen munching on sweets; some of them ending up on her cheek. She even eats jam directly without spreading it on bread or mixing it with tea! To [[ProperLady Darjeeling]], this ammounts to JabbaTableManners.
* ThirdPersonPerson: At her most egotistical, she even appends "-sama" to her own name.
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: The shortest girl in the series, a BrattyHalfPint threatening serious punishment and with a huge [[TheNapoleon height complex]].
* TokenMiniMoe: Shorter than even Anzu at a mere 127cm ([[TheNapoleon and incredibly insecure about it]]).
* YouHaveFailedMe: Katyusha warns her teammates that, should they be get taken out, they'll be punished with... 25 days of supplementary classes in a dark classroom. It's unlikely she is serious about that -- after all, sacrificing a few tanks in a DefensiveFeintTrap, as well as protecting the flag tank [[TakingTheBullet with the bodies of the other T-34s]], which implies getting taken out, were her own orders.
** In Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu's second omake, she and Nonna grill Nina about seeing Yukari and Erwin disguised as Pravda students in the fifth OVA. Thankfully, Nina pulls her coat over her head, making her seem even shorter than Katyusha.

!!Nonna

->"You're probably thinking you couldn't do that, right Katyusha?"

->'''Position:''' Tank Commander/Gunner, T-34/85, then IS-2
->'''Voiced by:''' SumireUesaka (Japanese), Shannon Emerick (English)

Pravda's second-in-command. Initially commands a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-34#T-34-85 T-34/85]] during the semifinals against ÅŒarai, then switches to the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iosef_Stalin_tank#IS-2 IS-2]] later during the same match.
----
* AloofDarkHairedGirl: She's [[HugeSchoolgirl tall]], [[BoobsofSteel stacked]], has dark hair and pale skin. She fits the personality as well, being a [[ServileSnarker loyal yet snarky]] CoolBigSis.
* BeleagueredAssistant: Taking care of Katyusha is hard.
* BoobsOfSteel: The most well-endowed girl in the entire cast, and among the best gunners.
* TheCastShowOff: SumireUesaka is not only a foreign language major specializing in Russian, but is also a ''huge'' Russia otaku, so she understands her [[GratuitousForeignLanguage Gratuitous Russian]]. [[WordOfGod An official tweet]] even said that the "Cossack Lullaby" in Episode 9 was ad-libbed by Uesaka herself (the original script called for her to sing any lullaby).
* ColdSniper: Knocked out all of ÅŒarai's tanks that were hit during the match. [[spoiler:The flipping of the Pz.38(t) was particularly brutal.]]
* CoolBigSis: Serves this role towards the childlike Katyusha by keeping her line and also giving her piggyback rides.
* EyeScream: Victim of an accidental poke in the eye by Katyusha. Luckily, she only needed to get eye drops from the nurse.
* HugeSchoolgirl: The tallest girl in the cast, with official materials listing her height as 172 cm. This fact is highlighted even further given how she's paired with the diminutive Katyusha.
* HypercompetentSidekick: Without Nonna , Katyusha would spend too much time napping and let her ego get away with her
* MeaningfulName: Pravda's best gunner shares a name with a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2S9_Nona long-ranged killing machine]].
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite her serious and stoic demeanor, she enjoys fooling around with Katyusha in the bath.
* TheQuietOne: Rarely raises her voice, talks to Katyusha only to point things out (or [[ServileSnarker snark]] at her) and to others only to make (sincerely) polite noises.
* RedBaron: "Blizzard" Nonna.
* ServileSnarker: Katyusha’s second-in command, and the only person who can tell Katyusha to wipe her face, point out her ulterior motives and make fun of her analogies and get away with it without getting yelled at.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Seems aloof and detached most of the time, but shows a warmer side around Katyusha, and smiles when she and Katyusha greet Miho before the finals.
* TeamMom: Takes care of the child-sized Katyusha.
----

!!Nina

One of the crew members of Pravda's [[http://www.militaryfactory.com/armor/detail.asp?armor_id=210 KV-2]]. She appears in OVA 5.
----
* NiceHat: While other characters in the show wear ushankas, Nina has this as a character identifier.
* SempaiKohai: Mistakes a disguised Yukari and Erwin for her seniors, indicating that she's likely a first-year.
* ServileSnarker: Likes to gossip about Katyusha behind her back.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Despite escaping the wrath of Katyusha, it's assumed that she still suffered ''some'' kind of punishment in the ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' omake, as Nonna drags her away in the final panel.

!!Kuromorimine Women's College

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/GUP_KuromorimineSmall_5224.png
Miho's previous ''alma mater'' from Kumamoto Prefecture and ÅŒarai's [[OpposingSportsTeam eventual archnemesis]], specializing in German tanks such as [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_III Panzer III]], Panzer IV, [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panther_tank Panther]], [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_I Tiger I]], [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_II Tiger II]] and [[spoiler:[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_VIII_Maus Maus]]]], as well as the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagdpanzer_IV Jagdpanzer IV]], [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagdpanther Jagdpanther]], [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagdtiger Jagdtiger]], and [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elefant Elefant]] tank destroyers.

Heavily associated with the famed Nishizumi family, they are renowned for winning the National Tournament 9 times in a row and came close to a 10-win streak [[spoiler:when an act of charity by Miho, then commanding their flag tank, towards the crew of a sinking friendly tank cost them the championship to Pravda]].
----
* EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor: The main antagonists of the series, [[spoiler:although [[AntiVillain Maho]] fights for an ultimately selfless purpose]], and they have considerable difficulty lightening up, as shown in Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu.
* GermanicDepressives: Most of the members that have been seen are quite serious most of the time.
* GermanicEfficiency: They incorporate this in their tank battles, and are good at going in formation.
* GratuitousGerman: Interestingly enough, unlike the other schools, most of this comes up in translations, rather than actual dialogue. The name of the school is typically either translated as "Black Forest", "[[GratuitousJapanese Kuromorimine]]" or "Schwarzwaldspitze".

Miho's older sister, heir to the Nishizumi school of Tankery, and leader of Kuromorimine's teams. She commands from a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_I Tiger I]].
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: To Miho. As early as ''Little Army'' Maho never fell for her sister's unconventional tactics. When someone brings up the Nishizumi around Miho, it's to compare her to her elder sister.
* AloofBigSister: She had a serious falling out with Miho. [[spoiler:Not due to any personal disagreement, but because she's the heiress to Nishizumi-style Tankery and so she can't go against her mother's edicts, no matter how much she secretly encourages Miho's path.]]
* AntiVillain: Type IV, as in "Villain in Name Only", because [[spoiler:deep down she genuinely cares for Miho and her chosen path in life, even if she has to overtly break her heart]].
* BadassCreed
-->''"Nishizumi-ryuu Panzerkraft means [[{{Determinator}} always finding a way to move forward]]."\\
"There is no running away in the Nishizumi-style."'' (said just before [[spoiler: her duel with Miho]] begins in the finals)
* BeneathTheMask: Her [[EmotionlessGirl poker face]] is prominently shown throughout the anime -- mainly when her family is involved. ''Little Army'' shows us that she [[spoiler:loves Miho dearly]].
* BenevolentBoss: In Chapter 8 of "Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu", it's shown that while she's not as close to her troops as Miho, when they fear being held accountable for their mistakes, she reassures them that they followed her orders well, [[spoiler:and that if anyone, she is responsible for their loss]].
* BusmansHoliday: Played with in ''Little Army''. She spent her entire summer break at the tournament, but gets some time out of school to compensate for that. She ends up getting in a tank match to help Emi reconcile with Miho and learn more about her, and is once shown coming home from helping out with Shiho.
* {{Byronic Hero}}ine: Midway through Episode 10, she even does the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanderer_above_the_Sea_of_Fog iconic "back to the viewer, lost in her thoughts" pose]] as straight as it can be played in front of an army of tanks instead of a turbulent sea of fog. That is: a lot.
* TheComicallySerious: In “Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu.”
-->'''Erika''': So you really mean today is a Christmas party, after all?
-->'''Maho''': Haven't I said that since the beginning?
* CoolBigSis: ''Little Army'' reveals that she UsedToBeASweetKid, especially to Miho.
* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: She knows all about Miho's combat pragmatism and is aware that underdogs shouldn't be underestimated. She watched every one of Miho's matches in the tournament and her practice match against St.Gloriana.
* [[spoiler:DeclarationOfProtection: Her quote, above.]]
* DeusExitMachina: In the last chapter of ''Little Army'', when Miho secludes herself inside a tank [[spoiler:while burdened with her doubts about continuing with tankery and Emi's impending departure]], Sakuyo points out that Maho was usually the one to coax Miho out, but Maho has since returned to school.
* {{Determinator}}: As mentioned above, this is a fundamental principle of the Nishizumi school of Tankery. [[spoiler: It also applies to her personally. She took up the mantle of school heiress so Miho would be free to find her own path.]]
* [[spoiler:DuelBoss: Careful ([[HeroicSacrifice and with high toll]]) maneuvering on Miho's part sets the fight into this instead of HopelessBossFight.]]
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler:After [[HeroicSacrifice sacrificing her own freedom to secure Miho's own]], only to [[NiceJobBreakingItHero fail when Miho followed her anyway]], a [[CrackDefeat last-minute loss to Pravda]], and being forced to [[LoveAcrossBattlelines fight against]] [[DeclarationOfProtection what she wanted for Miho]], she ''finally'' succeeds in [[GoalInLife helping Miho find happiness in her own path]].]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: A subtler example than most, but her decision to PetTheDog by [[spoiler:loaning Mako her team's helicopter despite Erika's protests]], and subsequent justification of it as also being part of Tankery, not only shows her kinder side, but also a belief that kind acts are not exclusive from adhering to [[SeriousBusiness the Nishizumi approach to tankery]].
* FanNickname: Tank [[Manga/{{Saki}} Teru]]. ''Unlike'' Miyanaga Teru, Maho never disavows Miho's existence [[spoiler:and secretly encourages her path in life.]] She can also be considered an {{Expy}} of Teru, given the [[CounterpartComparison parallels the series has to Saki]] (see the YMMV page for more).
* FinalBoss: Not only the head of the final opposing team, but she also commands the flag tank, [[spoiler:and her and Miho's tanks wind up facing each other one-on-one]].
* FriendlyEnemy: To Miho during the practice match, which was the result of a challenge Miho made in order to reconcile with Emi and help her learn more about Maho.
* [[spoiler:GracefulLoser: She doesn't mind losing to Miho in the finals. After all, she won on a personal level -- to allow Miho to succeed in her own Tankery style.]]
* HiddenDepths: ''Little Army'' shows that she is a kinder individual than she first seems, especially toward Miho [[spoiler:for whose sake she strives to live up to being the Nishizumi heir]]. ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'' shows that she's somewhat socially awkward (but better at hiding it than Miho is because she's more confident) and has difficulty lightening up.
* HeroicSacrifice: Metaphorical example -- [[spoiler:by becoming the perfect Nishizumi-style practitioner, she sacrifices her own sense of morality so Miho would be free to follow her heart]].
* IceQueen: Very cold and distant. [[spoiler:''Little Army'' confirms that this is just an act to complete her image as the Nishizumi family heir.]]
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: In ''Little Army'', when Miho asks her if she [[spoiler:ordered her tank to fire on Emi's older sister's team's flag tank when it went to rescue another tank from Maho's team]]. There is some indication that she may be pretending this is the case, as she seems pained when it it is first brought up.
-->"...Miho. What I did was Nishizumi style Panzer-kraft. [[spoiler:I gave the order to shoot]]."
* JerkassFacade: [[spoiler:Forced to act abrasively towards her little sister in order to allow her to follow her style. During ''Little Army'', she's friendly toward Miho until Shiho arrives, at which point she has to coldly brush off Miho when she asks about her decision to shoot the enemy flag tank that was trying to save her teammate. After Miho summons the nerve to ask their mother about the necessity of such an action, [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness which Maho noted was unlike her]], she later privately apologizes to her for her sudden change in attitude.]]
* TheLeader: Of Kuromorimine. Like her sister, she overlaps in the types: planning ([[spoiler: hide a Maus in the town in case Miho tried to force UrbanWarfare]]), levelheaded (TheStoic), and charismatic (the perfect Nishizumi style practioner).
* MeaningfulName: Most likely the Nishizumi clan is related to Nishizumi Kojiro, a famous tank hero during the Sino-Japanese War.
* MsFanservice: Although not apparent in the Anime, [[http://www.batoto.net/read/_/216449/girls-und-panzer-motto-love-love-sakusen-desu_ch8_by_ak-scanlations/8 chapter 8]] of the second spin-off shows that she can fill a sexy Christmas-themed dress quite well.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Implied. [[spoiler:For all her efforts in keeping Miho from the pressures associated to being a Nishizumi, this is all came to naught when Miho follows her into Kuromorimine anyway.]]
* NiceToTheWaiter: She's friendly and courteous to the Nishizumi family maids, in contrast to her mother.
* NotSoAboveItAll: While she is seen as a stern, yet calm leader of Kuromorimine's Tankery team, chapter 8 of ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' portrays her as this (See below entry.)
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Around the time her mother is [[spoiler:considering disowning Miho]], Maho starts more openly expressing her opinion on matters when such opinions go against Shiho, when this would be almost unthinkable for her before.
** Played for laughs in the second spin-off manga. She acts friendly toward her teammates in the holiday party, [[spoiler:which takes place after their defeat in the finals]]. Unfortunately, they notice that she's not acting like herself and (mistakenly) fear that she’s planning to hold a review meeting to take them to task for their mistakes.
* PetTheDog
** Allows her team chopper to [[spoiler:carry Mako quickly to the hospital to see her bedridden grandmother]].
** When Shiho seems ready to conclude that Pravda will beat Ooarai, Maho asks her to stay, convinced Miho has a chance to turn it around, which indicates that she thinks more of her and Ooarai's potential than she lets on, as does her statement that the win was a result of her own skill, rather than her opponent's carelessness.
** In ''Little Army'', she gives Emi some ointment after she hits her head on the inside of the tank. Emi, who had previously hated her, takes note of the action, and begins to warm up to Maho.
* TheStoic: She rarely shows emotion, as befits the heir of the Nishizumi school. [[NotSoStoic The one time she lets her facade slip when she's trying not to]] is when she sees that Miho has brought her friends over in order to ask her mother [[spoiler:whether it was necessary for her to fire on the flag tank that was rescuing her teammates]]. Her expression turns surprised as she says "Miho...".
* TerseTalker: In her e-mails, as shown in "Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu". ("Those without anything for Christmas, come.")
* [[spoiler:{{Tragic Hero}}ine: It's revealed at the end of ''Little Army'' that the reason she puts on her JerkassFacade is to free ''Miho'' from the constrictive Nishizumi-style Tankery, so she can find her own way, only for it to be voided when Miho takes up the style anyways between prequel and anime and then quitting Tankery altogether. Then she is forced to confront her sister while wearing the JerkassFacade she put on trying to protect her. Thankfully, in the end, Miho succeeds and declares that she has found her own way of tankery]]
* [[UngratefulBastard Ungrateful Bitch]]: What Emi thought of her orders to [[spoiler:shoot down the enemy flag tank en route to rescuing one of ''her own'' teammates]]. Dowplayed, in that she seems genuinely remorseful over that.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: ''Little Army'' reveals this, both in her interactions with Miho until their mother returns home, and flashbacks showing the two as young children. [[spoiler:Despite her aloof facade, though, she does still care for Miho as much as ever, as seen after the final match]].
* VillainRespect: When [[AbusiveParents Shiho]] attributes Ooarai's success [[spoiler:against Pravda]] to blind luck and the enemy's carelessness, she openly disagrees and explicitly atributes it to Miho's intellect and Ooarai's motivation and teamwork spirit. In the practice match against Miho in ''Little Army'', she seems pleased when Miho manages to avoid a few of her shots.
* WalkingSpoiler: A fair number of her tropes are spoilers, particularly [[spoiler:how she truly feels about Miho]].
* [[WellDoneSonGuy "Well done, Daughter" Gal]]: Maho is carrying on the Nishizumi style to please her mother.
** ''Little Army'' Chapter 7 reveals an even deeper reason: [[spoiler:she voluntarily took on the role of heiress to allow Miho to live her life freely, untethered by the strictures of the Nishizumi school.]]
* WhamLine: [[spoiler:Admitting to shooting the flag tank during its rescue mission]] in ''Little Army''.
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: Quite possibly her reaction to her mother telling her that [[spoiler:shooting the German flag tank]] was the right thing to do, since she doesn't seem at all happy about it.

* MyNewGiftIsLame: She's horrified and traumatized to receive the model of the tank that caused her so much trouble in the finals, but noticing that Maho is looking her way, hides those feelings and says she's grateful to Miho.
* ImpersonationGambit: She's in the receiving end of this when Anzu then [[spoiler:takes Jagdpanther-chan's intended position in Kuromorimine's battle line.]]
* MilkingTheGiantCow: Her reaction at the above (also see her first quote).
* NoNameGiven: Hence the FanNickname "Jagdpanther-chan". In Pixiv, she was designated as "Ritaiko" (aka "Track Girl").
----

!!Koume Akeboshi

-->''"I've been worried ever since you left. Since we caused problems for you, and everything... But I'm glad you didn't quit Tankery, Miho-san."''

A member of the Kuromorimine tankery team [[spoiler:whom Miho saved from drowning in the last tournament]].
----
* FriendlyEnemy: Despite being on an opposing side, she’s glad that Miho’s still doing tankery.
* [[spoiler:IOweYouMyLife: Is grateful to Miho for saving her, as Yukari predicted]].
* ItsAllMyFault: She blamed herself for Miho leaving Kuromorimine.
* NiceGirl: She’s cheerful, friendly and grateful toward Miho.
* NoNameGiven: Her name is not revealed anywhere in the series itself, and instead is first revealed in one of the card extras from the Blu-Rays.
* OnlySaneMan: The only one of Maho's guests who doesn't obsess about her mistakes during the holiday party, and the only one who immediately recognizes the holiday party for what it is.
* TearsOfJoy: You can see them in her eyes when she says she's glad Miho didn't quit tankery.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: She seems to see herself as such, [[spoiler:given that the fallout from Miho saving her and her crew resulted in Miho leaving]].
* WalkingSpoiler: Her entire character is based around a fairly significant plot point.

!![[spoiler:[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_VIII_Maus Panzer VIII Maus]]]]
Kuromorimine's secret weapon, which they bring out for the finals of the tournament. This is the only non-ÅŒarai tank to be treated as a character.
----
* [[spoiler:AttackItsWeakPoint: Taken down for good by Hana firing at the air slits on the back.]]
* BonusBoss: A non-video game example. It's a tougher-than-the-FinalBoss obstacle that could have been avoided.
* TheDreaded: Even Katyusha is intimidated by seeing it.
* FluffyTheTerrible: One of its WWII designers had a... sense of humor. This is {{Lampshaded}} by one of its victims.
--> '''Sodoko:''' "What's so '[[spoiler:mouse]]' about something that big?!"
* HeroKiller: It has the best record of taking out ÅŒarai tanks of any single opposing tank. [[spoiler:Mallard and Hippo Team are taken down, and Turtle Team is damaged to the point of collapse in the process of defeating it.]]
* TheJuggernaut: Its armor is so strong that ÅŒarai's tanks can't hurt it. Five of them fire simultaneously but it shrugs off the shots and continues moving. [[spoiler: Miho's plan to defeat it includes stopping it as step 1. She had to shove Turtle Team under its tracks and then direct Duck Team over Turtle to block its turret]].
* MightyGlacier: It shrugs off everything ÅŒarai can throw at it and can take any of them out with one hit (even near misses can toss their tanks around), but is ''very'' slow.
* WalkingSpoiler: The nature of this tank is a big deal for the FinalBattle.

!!Ami Chouno
[[quoteright:130:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ami_chouno_44150_1656.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HekiruShiina (Japanese), Creator/ShelleyCaleneBlack (English)

Instructor for ÅŒarai's Tankery class.
----
* CombatReferee: Oversees the initial training match, as well as the finals.
* CoolTeacher: Airdropping her tank, tankery relationship advice; yes.
* DynamicEntry: She paradrops her tank from her transport on the principal's Ferrari, and then backs down on it again, crushing it.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: When she sees Miho among the assembled students, she points out that Miho's mother has done quite a bit for her, makes a polite inquiry about how her sister is doing, and says the Nishizumi school has a long history. Despite having no ill intentions toward Miho, Ami upsets Miho by bringing up her family issues, but Saori quickly moves to ChangeTheUncomfortableSubject.
* KaijuDefenseForce: Is a member of the Fuji School Brigade Tank Training unit, aka Top Gun for tanks.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: She is supposed to be ÅŒarai's instructor, yet she does nothing but watch them.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: Her only act as a teacher was to make them do a training match, the very first day. Most of the girls didn't even know how to start the tanks.
----

!! Yuri Isuzu
-->''"You took those delicate hands of yours that arrange flowers and laid them on a tank!"''

->'''Voiced by:''' Masayo Kurata (Japanese), Creator/EmilyNeves (English)

Hana's mother and head of the Isuzu flower arranging school.
----
* BigFancyHouse: After she faints, Team Anglerfish sans Mako heads to the Isuzu house, which is quite large.
* BigShutUp: Angrily yells "Silence, Shinzaburou!" when he starts to speak out against her disowning Hana.
* BlankWhiteEyes: Immediately before fainting.
* CharacterDevelopment: Starts off hating Tankery and everything associated with it, even disowning her daughter after hearing of her involvement in it. She then attends some of Hana's matches and [[spoiler: reconciles with her after realizing that Tankery has helped her develop her own style of flower arranging, and is cheering and enjoying herself in the finals.]]
* {{Fainting}}: She faints dead away upon being told her daughter is involved with ''Tanks''! She looks as though she's about to pass out for a moment when Hana reaffirms her determination to continue with tankery.
* FantasyForbiddingMother: She is horrified by Hana pursuing Tankery.
* {{Foil}}: To Miho's mother. Both disapprove of their daughters doing Tankery, but Shiho disapproves of the way Miho does it, while Yuri doesn't like Hana doing it at all. Additionally, Yuri is, apart from her reaction after finding out about her daughter doing Tankery, warmer and more supportive of Hana, as she argues that her flower arrangement is good and fitting with the Isuzu style as it is, while Shiho considers Miho a disgrace to the family.
* [[IHaveNoSon I Have No Daughter]]: Does this to Hana after learning about tankery [[spoiler: but they later reconcile.]]
* {{Keigo}}: Speaks formally, and even calls her daughter "Hana-[[JapaneseHonorifics san]]"
* KimonoIsTraditional: She is always seen in one because she's that kind of lady; head of the Isuzu flower arranging school and all.
* TheNoseKnows: She's able to confirm that Hana was in a tank by virtue of taking her hand and smelling it, although she knew what to look for after [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom Yukari told her about Hana doing Tankery]].
* ParentsAsPeople: In spite of taking Hana's decision to participate in Tankery poorly, she cares for her, and her initial reaction after coming to is worry that something is troubling Hana.
* SeriousBusiness: She ''disowns'' her daughter over her choice of school ''club''! TruthInTelevision, unfortunately. [[spoiler: She mellows when ÅŒarai gets into the finals, and upon noticing that Hana's flower arrangement has improved as a result of doing tankery. Also TruthInTelevision, naturally.]]
* [[spoiler: SoProudOfYou: When seeing that Hana's flower arrangement has improved thanks to Tankery. Again after Hana's team wins the tournament]].
----

!! Hisako Reizei
-->''"She's pretty antisocial, but thanks for taking care of her"''

->'''Voiced by:''' RikakoAikawa (Japanese), LuciChristian (English)

Mako's grandmother and sole remaining family.
----
* [[CoolOldGuy Cool Old Lady]]: Quite energetic in her old age, and this dispels some of Miho, Hana and Yukari's worries about her as they hear her outside her room.
* DontYouDarePityMe: She has some elements of this in her hospital visit, such as insisting that Mako not treat her like an "invalid" and vehemently insisting that Team Anglerfish was worried about Mako rather than her.
* GenerationXerox: Saori suggests that she's very similar to Mako's mother.
* HotBlooded: In contrast to Mako's 'low blood pressure', she is very excitable and aggressive.
* KimonoIsTraditional: She wears one to the finals, and it seems to, from all indication, be her everyday outfit.
* {{Tsundere}}: She and Mako spend most of Mako's hospital visit bickering, but when Mako leaves, her grandmother turns to her friends and asks them to look after her.
----

!! Shiho Nishizumi
-->''"That girl is a Nishizumi and yet she does not care what she does. I will not allow any further embarrassments."''

->'''Voiced by:''' Yumi Touma (Japanese), Genevieve Simmons (English)

Miho and Maho's mother, and head instructor of the Nishizumi school.
----
* AbusiveParents: Instead of congratulating her for saving her teammates she berates Miho for losing the battle, stating "sacrifices are required for victory."
* BadassCreed:
-->''"If you shoot, you hit, if you defend, you defend strong, if you advance, you advance without falter. Iron rules and a heart of steel. That is what defines the Nishizumi school."''
* BigFancyHouse: The Nishizumi residence rivals the ''main school building'' at ÅŒarai for size!
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: See AbusiveParents.
* {{Foil}}: To Hana's mother. Both disapprove of their daughters doing Tankery, but Shiho disapproves of the way Miho does it, while Yuri doesn't like Hana doing it at all. Additionally, Yuri is, apart from her reaction after finding out about her daughter doing Tankery, warmer and more supportive of Hana, arguing that her flower arrangement is good and fitting with the Isuzu style as it is, while Shiho considers Miho a disgrace to the family.
* HimeCut: To emphasize her 'tankery nobility' status.
* IAmTheNoun: In Chapter 14 of the manga.
-->''"The Nishizumi-style is a symbol of strength for Panzerkraft. Thus the Nishizumi-style itself is Panzerkraft."''
* IceQueen: To an even greater extent than Maho [[spoiler:and unlike Maho, she not [[JerkAssFacade pretending]] to be one]]. Her daughter Miho and Kikuyo, one of the family maids, are intimidated just being in her presence, and Miho's friends are scared to approach her after just one meeting.
* [[spoiler:[[IHaveNoSon I Have No Daughter]]:]] [[spoiler:Planned on doing this to Miho, but so far has not formally delivered the news, and may have changed her mind. If she did, anime viewers are never made aware of it. The manga makes it explicit for extra Jerkass points she sent Kikuyo, the maid, to tell Miho that Shiho is going to disinherit her if she loses the match against Pravda right after a very narrow and in her own words, embarassing victory against Anzio. Obviously, even though ÅŒarai won against Pravda, it wasn't the ''kind'' of victory that Shiho wanted and she remains unimpressed with Miho. She wanted Maho to defeat her because "the world only needs one Nishizumi style".]].
* JerkAss: Typically fairly cold and abrasive with most people. Even her favored daughter Maho has to achieve a very significant accomplishment to get any praise out of her.
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler:Threatening to disown your own daughter over tankery]] is bad enough, but not even bothering to tell the person in question personally, and instead giving the unpleasant task to the person's ParentalSubstitute is even worse.
* KimonoIsTraditional: Typically seen wearing one when she's not wearing a suit. Again, this to highlight the 'tankery nobility' thing about the Nishizumi clan.
* MeaningfulName: Most likely the Nishizumi clan is related to Nishizumi Kojiro, a famous tank hero during the Sino-Japanese War.
* ParentalFavoritism: Strongly favors Maho. In ''Little Army'', when she happens upon Miho and Maho, she congratulates Maho for winning the tournament, and barely acknowledges Miho's presence.
* PerpetualFrowner: Always has a cold and detached expression on her face. [[spoiler:Until the ending of the first series, while clapping for Miho's victory]].
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers: Her general attitude because of the Nishizumi family style.
* SeriousBusiness: There is no business more serious than the Nishizumi reputation in Tankerys. It's also indicated that among the Tankery families, the Nishizumi family stands out for strictness.
* ShutUpKirk: When Miho asks if [[spoiler:Maho really had to shoot the enemy's flag tank when it went on a rescue operation]].
-->'''Shiho''': What a foolish question. For one who carries the name of the Nishizumi family to say such a foolish thing... it's plainly embarrassing.
* [[spoiler:SoProudOfYou: Up for debate, but some people interpret her clapping at ÅŒarai's victory in the finals as an acknowledgement that Miho's Way of Tankery is as valid as hers.]]
----

!!Shinzaburou
->'''Voiced by:''' AtsushiImaruoka (Japanese), DavidMatranga (English)

A young man doing an apprenticeship who works as a servant for Hana's mother.
----
* InelegantBlubbering: His reaction to Hana being disowned.
* LargeHam: When he gets emotional, expect some fairly extreme displays of it.
* NoNameGiven: His other name is not revealed.
* OldRetainer: He's clearly young, but he definitely acts with the best interests of the Isuzu family in mind; he's not merely doing a job.
* SuperStrength: Downplayed but still valid. Not only can he pull a rickshaw that has four members of Team Anglerfish in it, he can run very fast while shouting.
* WithDueRespect: He begs Hana to confront her mother after she discovers her daughter is doing Tankery, saying that it might not be any of his business, but he believes it would be best of her to tell her mother how she feels. He protests when Yuri decides to disown Hana.
----

!! Jungorou and Yoshiko Akiyama
->'''Jungorou voiced by:''' ChrisAyres (English)
->'''Yoshiko voiced by:''' Creator/MaggieFlecknoe (English)

Yukari’s father and mother, respectively, who work as hairdressers.
----
* AllWomenLoveShoes: Averted for Yoshiko. In response to Yukari collecting military footwear she says that people only have one pair of feet, and that extra pairs of shoes are just for vanity's sake.
* BeQuietNudge: In "Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu", when Jungorou, seeing the Oarai girls going to get their hairstyles in compliance with the regulations set forth by Sodoko, remarks that they finally have customers.
* DotingParent: Jungorou is described as such to Yukari on his (non-tvtropes) character sheet.
* GoodParents: For all their eccentricities, they're kind and supportive toward Yukari, and don't stand in the way of how she wants to live, or hold her to unreasonable standards.
* OpenMindedParent: Both of them are okay with Yukai driving a tank. In fact, they're more upset about her shoe collection....
* PoseOfSupplication: Jungorou goes into one after seeing Yukari's friends come over, and it's noted that this is the first time he has met her friends.
* TearsOfJoy: Jungorou, [[spoiler:during the rescue of Rabbit team]] in the final battle.

!! Characters from ''Little Army'' Manga

[[quoteright:225:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/littlearmy_1902.jpg]]

!Miho's crew

To the right from young Miho in the pic, and from left to right:
!!Chihiro Yusa: Gunner

One of Miho's friends from late elementary school. She's an athletic girl who is a newcomer to tankery.

* {{Bifauxnen}}: Looks like a boy, thinks like a boy, talks like a boy.
* ChildhoodFriend: With Emi. They've known each other for much longer than they've known Miho or Emi.
* {{Determinator}}: Convinces the group to wait for Maho and Shiho, even if it takes hours.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Apologizes for Hitomi's eager questioning, setting herself up as the moderating force of the group.
* GameBreakingInjury: She sprains her ankle after accidentally falling off the tank, leaving her unable to drive. With her unable to drive, Hitomi lacking the skill to do so, and Miho unable to drive the tank alone, they're stranded until Emi shows up.
* InvisibleParents: Her parents, like Saori's, are never shown, but it's implied that her mother is very strict.
* LovableJock: Before doing tankery, she played soccer, [[spoiler:and ends up going to a sports school]].
* NotSoDifferent: She's able to understand Maho's behavior around Shiho by virtue of the fact that her own mother is reportedly very strict.
* TeamMom: She cares a lot about Hitomi and is able to keep Emi's vitriol at bay.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Emi. She doesn't hesitate to call her out on a lot of things, and due to Emi's thorny attitude toward just about everyone, she gets to call her out a lot of times.
* WhatTheHellHero: A few toward Emi, especially when she sees her as taking out her resentment toward Maho on Miho.

!!Hitomi Yuzumoto: Loader

Chihiro's childhood friend, who befriended Miho around the same time Chihiro did. She's also a relative neophyte at tankery, but in her case, she has a habit of [[FleetingPassionateHobbies often getting involved in something on a whim, only to lose interest]].

* CannotSpitItOut: She doesn't tell Chihiro or the others about her practicing on her own, making them wonder if she has lost interest in Tankery.
* ChildhoodFriend: With Chihiro. They've known each other for much longer than they've known Miho or Emi.
* CuteClumsyGirl: She often trips when she's excited, and is said to have been bad at sports because of that.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Goes up to Miho, falling on her face in the process, and asks if she can become one of Maho's fans.
* FanGirl: Wants to become one of Maho.
* FleetingPassionateHobbies: Chihiro fears that Tankery is the next in this series. For the moment, she's more committed to it than she is to most of them. [[spoiler:Ultimately, she remains committed to studying Tankery even after her and Miho's tank group disbands]].
* GenkiGirl: She is very interested in Tankery. Unfortunately, she also has a bad habit of not being able to focus on a particular interest for too long.
* InvisibleParents: Her only reference to her parents is "My mom's gonna be so angry", after she ends up running late returning home from the test run with the tank.

!!Emi Nakasuka: Driver
-->''"[[BrutalHonesty I hate lies and flattery]]. There's no point in wasting praise on the selfish."''

The last of Miho's friends from elementary school, a girl with a quick temper and sharp tongue who nevertheless cares for others and is knowledgeable about tanks. She's half-Japanese, half-German, and the younger sister of a member of the team Maho defeated in the tournament finals.

* BrutalHonesty: Her defining character trait, and the main source of her conflicts with others.
* ButNotTooForeign: She's part German.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In contrast to most of the rest of the class, she's not in the least bit excited or happy over the news of Maho's tournament win.
* {{Expy}}: A hotheaded German/Japanese girl who's irritated by JapanesePoliteness and has skill piloting a war machine? In these regards, she has some similarity to Asuka.
* FieryRedhead: She's not only brutally honest, but also fairly short-tempered in comparison to her friends.
* {{Foil}}: She is typically fairly blunt about her feelings, no matter how much it upsets Miho or any of her other friends. This contrasts with the gunner of Maho's team, who sucks up to her despite bickering with the loader.
* FullNameBasis: Calls Maho by her full name at all times.
%%* GirlishPigtails
* [[spoiler:GracefulLoser]]: [[spoiler:Takes her defeat at Maho's hands relatively well]].
* JerkAss: She has no problem telling Miho how she hates Maho and she does so repeatedly, much to Miho's distress; the two are on good terms at the moment.
--> "I don't want to do Tankery as long as your sister is home."
** JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Ends up as one after CharacterDevelopment.
* JerkAssHasAPoint: [[spoiler:It turns out that she has a fairly legitimate complaint about Maho, and Miho is upset to hear that what she said is true]].
* LastNameBasis: Typically calls Miho and her friends by their last name and "-san", even after they switch to calling her by her first name, but [[spoiler:calls out Miho's first name while saying goodbye to her]].
* MeaningfulEcho: Invoked non-verbal example. After seeing Miho troubled, she takes her elsewhere and grabs her hand, recounting a time in Chapter 2 when Miho did the same thing to her, resulting in Emi becoming "nervous" and speaking honestly about herself.
* SayingTooMuch: Miho finds out she's knowledgeable about driving tanks when she complains about Maho having the advantage due to a powerful German tank, and later identifies the Panzer IV. She lampshades it when she mutters "I said something stupid like that without realizing it."
* SeriousBusiness: Not as much as the Nishizumi school, but she's fairly into tanks and seems to see most of her peers as playing around. [[spoiler:In the end, part of her reason for returning to Germany is to find her own way of doing Tankery, much like Miho is]].
* SoreLoser: She's part-German, thus she doesn't like Maho, who led the victory of Japan's team against the German team. Her big sister being in the aforementioned team doesn't help any. [[spoiler:She does contend that Maho would have won without taking the opportunity to shoot the enemy flag tank as it went to rescue one of her team's tanks, which could indicate that losing was not the main issue.]]
* [[ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself This Is Something She’s Got To Do Herself]]: Her opinion on Miho’s pondering Maho’s advice to find her own way of doing tankery, and wondering if she should continue at all.
-->'''Emi''': It won’t be good for her if she can’t be liberated from the Nishizumi style. For her to continue with Panzer would be meaningless if she cannot change herself..
* [[spoiler:TrainStationGoodbye]]: [[spoiler:Leaves her home on a train, with Miho, Emi and Chihiro following in their tank]].
* {{Tsundere}}: It's not known whether she likes or hates Miho (and to some extent, Maho) but she does react in a typical tsundere way when she's praised [[spoiler:and later decides to apologize to Maho]].
-->'''Emi''': ''"T-that was just an idea! Don't praise it!"''
-->'''Miho''': ''"Ah, that's Emi-chan for you. Ahahaha..."''
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Chihiro. She tends to ignore the point of Chihiro's reprimands.
* WhatTheHellHero: Accuses Maho of [[spoiler:ordering her tank to fire on the flag tank of the opposing team when it went to rescue one of her team's tanks]]. Her accusation [[spoiler:is correct]].

----

!Other characters

!!Sakuyo
-->''“Having felt the Nishizumi style, I believe it has changed me in a great way. I am indebted to the mistress for everything.”''

One of the Nishizumi family maids and a former student of Shiho's.

* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: With Kikuyo and Miho's teacher.
* JapaneseHonorifics: Uses "-sama" on the Nishizumi sisters.
%%* KimonoIsTraditional
* {{Koan}}: After Miho's argument with Emi, Sakuyo tells Miho that not everything goes cleanly in Tankery, and that sometimes, shootouts are necessary. Miho realizes that in order to reconcile with Emi, simply talking may not be enough, and decides to arrange a tankery match between her crew and Maho's.
* MeaningfulEcho: Echoes Maho's description of Tankery as a way to improve oneself as a person.
* {{Meido}}: For the Nishizumi family.
* [[MyMasterRightOrWrong My Mistress Right Or Wrong]]: When Miho asks about her opinion on Shiho’s description of the Nishizumi school's [[SeriousBusiness approach to Tankery]], Sakuyo sadly refuses to answer, saying that she’s "indebted" to the Nishizumi school and can’t give her opinion on her mistress.
* ParentalSubstitute: She's one for Miho, giving her advice about how to deal with her friends.

!!Kikuyo
-->''"Girls... [[WithDueRespect I beg of you, please]] don’t blame Lady Maho. The Nishizumi school is passed from mother to child. As the eldest daughter, Lady Maho is burdened with many things."''

Another of the Nishizumi family maids.

* BearerOfBadNews: In the manga, she meets with Miho to tell her that [[spoiler:she will be disinherited if she loses against Pravda]].
* CanonImmigrant: She makes an appearance in the main series manga.
* CombatReferee: The ref for the tank battle between Miho and Maho's teams.
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: With Sakuyo and Miho's teacher.
* JapaneseHonorifics: Uses "-sama" on the Nishizumi sisters.
%%* KimonoIsTraditional
* {{Meido}}: For the Nishizumi family.
* ParentalSubstitute: Maho asks her to look after Miho while she's away at school.
* WhamLine: In the main series manga, telling Miho that her mother knows what she has been up to, and [[spoiler:will disinherit her if she loss against Pravda]].
* WithDueRespect: After Shiho sends Miho's guests away, Kikuyo bows to them and begs them not to blame Maho, saying that she has her own burdens as the heir to the Nishizumi school.

!!Maho's Crew
A group of three of the students of the Nishizumi school who fight alongside Maho against Miho and her friends.

* BackForTheFinale: Miho and her friends are briefly shown doing mixed training matches with the students, [[spoiler:The three of them drive Miho, Hitomi and Chihiro as they catch up with Emi's train.]]
* BigBallOfViolence: The gunner and the loader, when they disagree over whether to ambush Miho's tank or attack her where they are and risk getting flanked.
* DeathGlare: The driver, as she threatens the gunner and loader with violence if they don't get back in their seats and comply with Maho's orders.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: [[spoiler:A case much like St. Gloriana, in which they win but befriend Miho]]. Miho thanks the loader for practicing with them despite having been their opponents.
* {{Foil}}: The gunner sucks up to Maho, in contrast to Emi practicing BrutalHonesty.
* GenkiGirl: The gunner has some traits of this.
-->''"Oh yeah! This is how you score a hit!"''
* GirlishPigtails: The gunner has them, and often comes off as somewhat immature when not trying to impress Maho.
* InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals: The driver looks like a younger Erika.
%%* {{Meganekko}}: The loader.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: The gunner.
-->'''Gunner''': ''"Ahh, I've been waiting for this day for so long... I'm riding in the same tank with the next family head, Maho-sama... I'm so honored~"\\
'''Maho''': "Ah, oh, I look forward to working with you."\\
'''Gunner''': "Please let me ride with you again after this-" (gets hit in the back of the head with a water bottle)\\
'''Loader''': Stop using flattery, you schemer!''
* NoNameGiven: "The Loader" is all.
* OnlySaneMan: Among the trio, the driver stands out, although it helps that the cool-headed Maho is the one giving orders.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: It's clear that the gunner and loader don't get along very well. See VolleyingInsults.
* VolleyingInsults: The gunner and the loader.
-->''"Are you stupid!?"\\
"Shut up you tarsier!"''

* JapaneseSiblingTerminology: Uses "Onee-chan" on Maho, and in the dub, addresses her as "Sister."

* WhatTheHellHero: In "Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu", she starts to politely criticize Sodoko's overzealous enforcement of the rules, and is forced to dye her hair black despite it being her natural color.
