* IllBoy: Tamahome's kind-hearted widowed father is ''severely'' ill, which is why Tamahome works so hard to mantain them. He's even seen apologizing to Tamahome for this unofficial PromotionToParent.

* BeautyMark: He has one under his left eye. It gets quite the focus in a very tragic scene of his past, when [[spoiler: his child self's face is shown while he cries his heart out after the death of his younger sister, Kourin]].

* StupidSexyFlanders: He's quite fond of Tamahome, and gushes over Tamahome when he first met him. But he pulls this mainly as one, to grab Tamahome's attention, two, cover Mika's fear of letting Tamahome know that Tamahome himself might be a fictional character, and three, Keisuke is simply hyped to actually witness a "supposedly fictional character" being real.

* BadassBeard: Sports one. [[spoiler:Oddly, it disappears immediately when his wife reverted him back to his youth]].

* WoundedGazelleGambit: Telling everyone that Miaka was a horrible and selfish person.

* TheBigGuy: Nuriko has the strength of, 10 or more grown men, but isn't all that tall or muscular or ''masculine'' and in fact is proud of his cuteness.

* TheLoad: Miaka frequently runs off alone into danger, despite having seven superpowered individuals sworn to protect her. In some cases she even tricks them ''out'' of helping or protecting her, which invariably makes the situation worse when they do have to intervene. The entire kodoku arc is the result of Miaka doing this, and it results in Tamahome becoming BrainwashedAndCrazy, Tasuki nearly dying via NoHoldsBarredBeatdown, and Chichiri and Hotohori in danger of being killed as well. The Suzaku warriors have no choice but to protect Miaka regardless of her reckless actions as she is the only person who can summon their god. With that said, part of Miaka's CharacterDevelopment is becoming aware of her own dumb and reckless actions and trying to to better, although for most of the series the results are... mixed.

* OverdrawnAtTheBloodBank: Nuriko battles against Ashitare, and wins, though he loses ''a lot'' of blood in the process. To make matters worse, he is determined to get the Shinzaho for Miaka, and walks towards the cave and moves the heavy stone blocking the entrance. All this results in Nuriko [[spoiler: [[RealityEnsues hemorrhaging to death]]]].

* OdangoHair: Her default hairstyle; despite not being Chinese herself, it's still fitting since most of the story takes place in a fantasy world that resembles ancient China. In the manga she'll often wear other hairstyles, but in the anime she wears her hair this way almost exclusively when it isn't let down.

* ZettaiRyouiki: Madoka is a Grade A, when in her school uniform.

* MonsterSobStory: Nakago beats him savagely in punishment for any transgression, and it's strongly implied that his terror of further punishment at least partially drives Ashitare's actions.

* BadassGay: The physically strongest of the Suzaku, and also openly proud of the fact that he's a man with the heart of a woman, being head-over-heels in love with Hotohori.

* EvenEvilHasStandards: Even at her absolute worst, Yui forbids Nakago and Suboshi from killing Miaka. [[LoopholeAbuse Not that it stops Nakago from outsourcing the job to other Seiryuu lieutenants.]]

** Tasuki is a HeManWomanHater, yet develops a fun, teasing rapport with WholesomeCrossdresser Nuriko. [[spoiler:Fittingly, Tasuki is one of the characters who takes Nuriko's death the hardest.]]

* UndyingLoyalty: One of Tasuki's strongest virtues is his fierce loyalty. This is what initially causes him ''not'' to join the Suzaku warriors, as he was bound by his old boss' dying wish that he lead the Mt. Reikaku bandits. Once he's able to throw in his lot with Suzaku he becomes one of the team's staunchest fighters, at one point willing to sacrifice his own life [[YouShallNotPass in a desperate attempt to buy time for Miaka and Chichiri to save themselves]]. ([[spoiler:All three survive, but Tasuki just barely.]])

* CommonalityConnection: With Mitsukake, as they are the oldest and most mature of the Suzaku warriors. They also both lost loved ones in a the same flood in the past, as well as [[spoiler:each losing the woman they loved to an early death.]]

* RousingSpeech: Mitsukake doesn't talk a lot, but ''damn'' does he make it count when the team is shattered by [[spoiler:the death of Nuriko]]. In the anime, the episode closes out with a powerful speech on why the tragedy matters and how they have to keep going.

* VitriolicBestBuds: With Tamahome as they insult each other.
