* DroppedABridgeOnHim: Compared to almost every major villain, his death is ridiculously unceremonious. He gets his brains blown out by Scar, who just walks ''right up to him''. Then again, he's an insignificant and weaselly excuse of a man with an over-inflated sense of self worth, so it's actually [[KarmicDeath quite fitting]].

* {{Hypocrite}}: He feels persecuted by people who don't understand him after being placed under house-arrest and his certification revoked, except that his utterly unethical experiments prove that he himself [[ItsAllAboutMe has no understanding or regard for the well-being of others]].

* NiceGirl: A prequel gaiden written by Hirakawa for [[Film/FullmetalAlchemist2017 the 2017 live-action film]] reveals that she supported her husband in spite of his repeated failures to become a State Alchemist, though tensions eventually flared between the two as Shou became increasingly desperate. [[spoiler:She was eventually "rewarded" with being turned into her [[MadScientist insane]] husband's first talking chimera, which [[DrivenToSuicide drove her to suicide]].]]

* GroinAttack: Self-inflicted in the 2003 anime. [[spoiler:He created Lust by sacrificing his genitals. We don't see the wound, but there is a ''lot'' of blood on his lower torso.]]

* HateSink: [[spoiler:Absolutely any charisma and guile Atlas has is a façade, and when that façade drops he quickly reveals himself to be one of the most revoltingly sadistic, petty and cruel villains in the ''entire franchise'' alongside Dante, Envy, 2003!Kimblee and the Gold-Toothed Doctor. And unlike them, he isn't a Homunculus, a thousand-year old immortal, or serving a greater evil, just a vile, manipulative human scumbag who ruined the Crichtons' lives for his selfish goal of a weapon forged from blood. His explosive death at the hands of the boy he disfigured is nothing ''but'' deserved.]]

* TooDumbToLive: Not only is this guy a vile scumbag, he's a complete idiot. He creates a talking but primitive chimera using his own wife as one of the life-forms fused to form it, and was incredibly "lucky" that all his suffering wife said as a chimera was "[[DrivenToSuicide I want to die]]" before succumbing to voluntary starvation, as he would face criminal charges and almost certainly be executed if he was found out. Two years later, his State Alchemist certification earned from creating a talking chimera will expire unless he produces impressive bioalchemical results, so what does he decide would be a good idea? Create another talking but primitive chimera, using his own [[WouldHurtAChild five-year-old daughter]] and her dog, then show two guests the result. Two guests who had developed a close friendship with his daughter. WhatCouldPossiblyGoWrong It doesn't take long before the AwfulTruth comes out and he's stripped of his certification and faced with criminal charges. Then [[VigilanteMan Scar]] hears of his crimes, hunts him down and kills him easily and unceremoniously, which wouldn't have happened as soon as it did if he hadn't turned his own daughter into a chimera in the first place.

* ForgottenFallenFriend: ''Very'' much averted. It's clear throughout the series that Ed and Al remain haunted by what happened to Nina; their new goal in the finale of discovering a way to undo chimeric transformations is explicitly to make up for failing to save Nina.

* SmallRoleBigImpact: Nina is only around for a small time. Despite this, she has one of the single largest impacts on the entire show '''period'''. Her being turned into a Chimera, and her death at the hands of Scar, become a major part of Ed and Al's characters that shape how they develop and view alchemy. Ed outright mentions her in the finale, cementing that despite her small role, she was that important to the two that they never forgave themselves for not being able to save her.

* AdvertisedExtra: She gets a prominent close-up shot during the final opening sequence, ''Rain,'' but get ''incredibly'' brief screen-time during the last arc. She doesn't even get a photo during the WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue.

* SmallRoleBigImpact: She was a one episode character, but the Elric brothers' [[MyGreatestFailure failure to save her]] acts as a constant reminder that they aren't infallible. Edward even references her in the penultimate episode, right before forfeiting his alchemy in exchange for Alphonse's human body. Alphonse later says in the final episode that the incident still haunts the brothers, and they begin conducting alchemical research to find a way to return chimeras back to their original forms so that what happened to Nina never happens again.

* NoNameGiven: Neither brother's real name is ever given.

* YouAreNumberSix: The brothers are referred to only by a number after being assigned to guard the laboratory. Unlike Barry, we never do learn their real names; only their shared serial killer moniker.

* BadassBaritone: The older brother has a deep booming voice, while his younger brother's voice is higher.

* MasterSwordsman: They fought Edward while wielding one, and while the true extent of the older brother's swordsmanship is ambiguous, the younger brother was able to keep the former ''entirely'' on the defense.

* YouAreNumberSix: The brothers are referred to only by a number after being assigned to guard the laboratory.

* SinisterSchnoz: Note his exceptionally large nose in the above picture. It makes him even more punchable than he already is.

* TheBigGuy: They're all physical powerhouses who don't contribute much outside of being good in a fight.

* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: This must be the reason why Kimblee doesn't bother to help Darius and Heinkel from the mineshaft collapse, which leads to their HeelFaceTurn.
