A knight in service of Aegon Targaryen and over the years, he has received a nearly legendary reputation as a warrior. Yearning for the thrill of battle, Daghan is a violent man who certainly earned his fearsome reputation, yet also affable and calm towards those he likes.

* AntiHero: Even though Daghan becomes an ally to John and a genuine friend, he never quite becomes a clear hero. Fittingly, John is an AntiHero himself, though to a different degree. Despite his lust for battle, Daghan is still a noble and heroic man, capable of the knightly behavior that would be expected from a man in his rank.
* BadassBaritone: His voice is noted to be deep and gravelly, fitting for a man of his badassery.
* BloodKnight: Daghan loves fighting, to say the least. While he clarifies that this is not about the act of killing, he doesn't seem to mind it as a byproduct of his love for fighting. Given his brutal strength, it's often even inevitable.
* BoisterousBruiser: Usually quiet and cultured, Daghan turns into a man more befitting of his thuggish looks whenever he is on a battlefield. Shouting loudly, sometimes laughing and certainly enjoying every second of it, he becomes absolutely terrifying when provoked into a fight.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: Despite his BloodKnight tendencies, Daghan is not without softness. He is loyal and affectionate towards those he considers friends and for all accounts loves his daughter dearly and gets downright soft when talking about her.
* DarkIsNotEvil: As a knight in service of House Targaryen, Daghan wears their colours, black and red. However, while he can be a bit of a jerk, he is anything but evil.
* DefrostingIceKing: When John and Janae first meet him, they are basically intruders in his hideout and they even steal a letter he received from his contact in the city. Naturally, he is quite cold and a bit hostile to them at first. However, he eventually comes around and warms up to them, becoming a friend and genuine ally to both.
* TheDreaded: According to Jaro and I'lian, who have seen him in battle during Aegon Targaryen's war against the Volantene Hegemony. The two brothers are downright terrified by the thought of having to face him.
* FaceOfAThug: Daghan has one, which is the source of Janae's initial distrust towards him.
* GeniusBruiser: It would be easy to mistake Daghan as a simple DumbMuscle, due to his size and brutish appearance, but eventually, he reveals himself to be quite a smart man.
* HiddenDepths: For all his tough guy appearance, Daghan has more than just a bit of a soft spot for his daughter, Cassandra. He is also a lot smarter than he appears to be at first and quite cultured.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Initially, Daghan comes off as rude and uncaring, though part of this is justified by John and Janae having entered his hideout and therefore threatening the secrecy of his mission. He still has moments of harshness later on, but becomes a genuine and important ally to John, with whom he forms a friendship.
* LightningBruiser: What makes Daghan especially dangerous is that he is not only taller than the large majority of men he fights, but also a lot stronger than the average swordsman and all of this without sacrificing much of his speed.
* MasterSwordsman: One of the best in the entire story.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: After moving to Raylansfair, Daghan quickly takes an interest in the tavern's barmaid, Daisy Vega. However, while she is understandably creeped out by his behavior, he explains towards John that he holds no feelings towards her, instead she merely reminds him of his daughter, whom he has left at Dragonstone and whom he missed deeply.
* WouldHitAGirl: One of his first scenes features a fight between him and a group of Second Sons, among them Lenrianda. He knocks her out by violently slamming his shield against her head.

The Master-at-arms of Dragonstone and head of House Qoherys. He is in his late forties, having served Aegon and his father and becoming a trusted man at court. For this, he was sent even ahead of his king, to secure the loyalty of the small houses in the area around Blackwater Bay.

* EyepatchOfPower: Having lost his eye to some event several years ago, he wears a silver and black colored one covering his missing eye.

The eldest child and heir of Ser Quenton Qoherys. He's a member of the Dragonstone garrison. Unlike his father, he's a rather unpleasant person.

* AlliterativeName: ''Q''uingar ''Q''oherys.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: Considers himself the best warrior in Dragonstone and is eager to prove it by fighting against a warrior of similar stature like Emphryus Dresfel.
* BaldOfEvil: His true morality is not yet known, but he is certainly far from pleasant and has a shaved head.
* BloodKnight: He's quite eager to test his strength against Dresfel, even if it goes against Orys Baratheon's orders.
* GiantMook: He's almost the same height as his father.
* {{Jerkass}}: The guy doesn't give Ellena a good impression, and Hemys indicates he's always like that. Over the course of a single part, he manages to severely belittle and insult pretty much everyone around him.
* TokenEvilTeammate: For a certain definition of evil. While Quingar hasn't done anything particularly bad so far, he sticks out from the people around Aegon, most of them willing to do at least morally ambiguous things, by lacking their affability and politeness. Instead, he is a massive jerk and implied to be quite ruthless.

* RapunzelHair: Described as having waist-length hair, which she mostly wears open.

* MulticoloredHair: Half his hair is dyed blue.

* BaldOfAwesome: Completely bald and just as awesome.

* BadassBeard: Has a short, but well trimmed beard and is an ambitious warrior and conqueror.

* BadassBeard: Sports a short, but very full beard, which is a visual indicator for his supreme badassery.

* BadassMustache: Crispian has a thick mustache.

* LightIsGood/LightIsNotGood: Similar to Balerion, opinion on Meraxes depends mostly on where someone stands in the War of Conquest. * CurbStompBattle: His three dragons are basically living nukes, so any time he deploys them in battle, the odds are shifted massively into his favour, no matter how heavily he is previously outnumbered.

* MysticalWhiteHair: Out of the three Targaryen's, she fits the trops the best, not only sporting her siblings' silvery-golden hair, but also being the most gentle, graceful and soft of the trio.

The bastard half-brother of Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya Targaryen, as well as a knight in their service and the general of the Targaryen army. He is known as a true knight, honourable and valiant in every situation, one of the few men who take their knightly vows truly seriously.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: There is no doubt that Orys is one of the nicest characters in the story. He is not only a true knight, he is also polite, affable and honourable in all of his actions. However, he is a dangerous MasterSwordsman, one of the most badass characters in the story and by far one of the most dangerous.
* BigDamnHeroes: His introductory scene has him and his companins Gordar Celtigar and Rahaerys Velaryon appear just in time to save Samantha and her group from what looked like certain death at the hands of Rodrik Stone and his Second Sons. Orys himself contributes to this fight by duelling Rodrik Stone.

The eldest nephew of Lord Crispian Celtigar of Claw Isle as well as a knight in service of House Targaryen. Talented and prideful, Gordar has little ambition to lead, but way more amibition to become the best swordsman in Westeros.

* SmallRoleBigImpact: Corilyan's role in the actual story is miniscule, he only appears in one part and is eventually KilledOffscreen. However, his involvement in the history of Westeros is absolutely massive. His death is the final trigger for the War of Conquest, the single most defining moment in Westerosi history.

House Bar Emmon of Sharp Point is of Andal origins, having been founded by the dreaded warlord Togarion Bar Emmon. They have always been among the strongest houses in their region, rivalling even the powerful Celtigar's. Nominally loyal to Storm's End, they break faith early on during the War of Conquest, to join forces with House Targaryen, whom they have long since admired. Their current head is Michael Bar Emmon.

* TheQuietOne. Iwan does not speak much during his introductory scene, basically only confirming that House Bar Emmon and Massey have broken their vows to House Durrandon to serv House Targaryen instead.

An ancient and very powerful house, the Darklyn's control the port town of Duskendale, itself the primary port to the Narrow Sea, granting them vast amounts of wealth. Unlike their neighbours, they were even more than capable of defending and keeping this wealth, making them a major power player in the region. Their current head is Damon Darklyn, who followed his father Bryen, who was burned alive by Balerion during the first battle of Aegon's Conquest.

An adviser of King Aegon. Though not holding an official position at the king's council, he is nonetheless an important presence at court and accompanies his liege during the first landing of Targaryen troops in Westeros.

* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: Debuts in the epilogue of Book 1.
* SinisterSchnoz: His most outstanding physical characteristic is his notably large, aquiline nose. While his morality is not yet known after appearing only so briefly, he at least looks a bit eery, especially compared to the beautiful Targaryen's.
