Kurei is the son of Kouran Mori and for some reason he looks rather similar to Recca and able to unleash flames on his hand, only blue/purple colored. He's cold hearted and sadistic, and led an elite group of assassins, the Uruha. He's quick to reveal that he's Recca's brother from the past, being ostracized as a cursed child since he nearly assassinated the infant Recca as a child and snuck to the present age when the Hokage was obliterated by UsefulNotes/OdaNobunaga, ending up in the care of the kind Tsukino Mori... whose husband is a monster extraordinare.

* NiceGuy: Easily one of the nicest fighters Recca has ever fought next to Kukai.
* PaperMaster: His madogu

!! Kukai

to:

* NiceGuy: Easily AFatherToHisMen: Well most of them anyway, with the exception of [[TheStarScream backstabbers]] and [[UnwittingPawn pawns]].
* AloofBigBrother: To Recca.
* BloodKnight: [[ArrogantKungFuGuy While he won't admit it, he is very excited about fighting]].
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler: After Tendou Jigoku is defeated, he bids his companions (Raiha, Neon) farewell and travels back to 400 years ago, so that he can kill Oda Nobunaga and avenge the Hokage clan]].
* CainAndAbel: The Cain to Recca's Abel.
* CoolBigBro: To a young Koganei. He taught him martial arts and gave him madougu and all.
* DefrostingIceKing: After the tournament arc he's still in pretty cool headed, but he's far more open with his own team and doesn't hide his emotions from them.
** [[spoiler: He went through the whole defrosting thing with Kurenai before too, when her bright and cheerful personality rubbed off on him. Sadly it did not last, thanks to Mori.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: Crosses it many times in his life, molding him into a JerkassWoobie.
* TheDragon: To Mori, though not by choice, [[spoiler: until Mori pulls a YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness on Kurei.]]
** DragonWithAnAgenda: Only works to save his foster mother.
* DrivenByEnvy: At first he seems to [[IrrationalHatred hate his brother, Recca, to the core for no reasons]]. But, later it is implied that because he is jealous of Recca's determination and ability to protect the latter's loved ones (particularly his girlfriend, Yanagi, and his mom, Kagehoshi, which recalled of his failure of protecting his lover, Kurenai, and his biological mother, Reina) despite weaker (so he thought) than him.
%%* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Kurei has ''always'' loved both of his mothers. In the past, seeing his birth mother, Reina, kept blaming Recca as the cause of their misfortunes, he attempted to kill Recca JUST to make her happy. He's proud of his birth mother and also went out of his way to act polite and courteous in front of her imprisoned adoptive mother, preferring not to shed blood in front of her, and when he learned that Mori's men were badmouthing his stepmom behind his back... after he left his mother's sight, he puts on his PsychoticSmirk and burnt down the insulters.
* {{Expy}}: The eerier, more ruthless rival of a flame-wielding hero who wields purple flames. There's quite the similarities between Kurei and [[VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters Iori Yagami.]]
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Gives quite an effective
one to his brother when he crosses over the DespairEventHorizon in the final act of the nicest fighters manga.
* GoodIsNotNice: Even after he's [[spoiler: turned on Mori]], he doesn't act like a saint.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Gave himself this after [[spoiler: his lover Kurenai was killed by Mori.]]
* IGaveMyWord: Say what you will about Kurei being a brutal killer, when Recca defeated him, he promised none of his subordinates would ever raise a hand to them again. And they didn't.
* ItsPersonalWithTheDragon: While Mori is the overall BigBad,
Recca has less personal enmities and connections on him, aside of 'a (really powerful) bad guy trying to endanger Yanagi and then the world'. In case of Kurei, however, their rivalry began way back from the distant past and they have similar powers to match.
* KillItWithFire: His main technique and unlike Recca, he does kill.
** And if he wants to, the people that he kills, he can absorb their spirits into his flame, reincarnating them as a being of fire that can't be killed under Kurei's control.
* LightningBruiser: Of the Hard-Hitting Speedster variety.
* MadeOfIron: After he and Recca beat the
ever fought next loving tar out of each other, depleting their physical and mental energies, they fire off multiple blasts of flame that collapse an entire stadium on the both of them! He then busts out with his fists looking fine.
* MagneticHero: He's very popular with many Uruha members, like Raiha, Joker, Jisho, [[BodyguardCrush Neon]],
to Kukai.
name a few.
* PaperMaster: MaskPower: Often wears a mask to hide his disfigured left side of his face, even it doesn't look impressive until the finals of the TournamentArc.
* {{Necromancer}}:
His madogu

!! Kukai
flame has the power to revive the souls of dead people and make them his own flame, like Kurenai [[spoiler:and Jisho]]. [[spoiler:Like (blood) father like son]].
* NobleDemon: He often spares those who aren't directly involved with his goals, but if you do [[FamilyUnfriendlyDeath God have mercy.]]
** You get worse if you actually harm his loved ones.
* NominalHero: Unlike his brother, he'll happily kill, hit girls, and inflict lasting pain on anyone in his way.
* PlayingWithFire: Like Recca.
* SixthRanger: To Team Hokage, later on in the Manga.
* SlasherSmile: His default expression, when fighting.
* StarCrossedLovers: [[spoiler: With Kurenai.]]
* TooManyBelts: On his black (red in the anime) robe outfit.
* TheCallKnowsWhereYouLive: [[spoiler: The moment he considers exiting the battlefield for good to start a new chapter with Neon, one of Mori's underlings attacks their hiding place and injures Neon. Kurei takes that as a sign that he isn't meant to have a peaceful life, kills the mook, and leaves Neon a note wishing for her happiness before going off to settle his scores with Mori.]]
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: After what he sees as Recca being the basic cause of all his initial troubles, Kurei doesn't want anyone finishing Recca off but him.
* ThePhoenix: [[spoiler:His flame's true form, just like his father. It explains his flame's ability to raise the soul of the dead (like Jisho and Kurenai) and transform them into part of his flame.]]
* TheUnFavourite: While viewed by this by the Hokage council, his main reason for hating Recca's guts is that being passed over is what ultimately caused his mother's death. [[spoiler: It turns out he is the rightful heir of the clan, it's just that he looked creepy.]]
* WhenHeSmiles: Not his usual SlasherSmile, but the non-creepy kind. Even Recca admits he looks very kind.
* WorthyOpponent: To Recca.

Neon is deeply infatuated with Kurei, but realizes that she can't win his heart from Kurenai, and in turn she witnesses Kurei's fall into evil due to Kouran Mori's machinations. A man of mystery. He just appeared out of nowhere and had a fight with Jyuushinshu member Jishou to a stalemate until Kurei witnessed his skills and decided to recruit him into Uruha. Joker only joins in one condition: If he's permitted to speak so informally all the time because being formal is a pain in the ass for him. Despite his jolly attitude, he's one of the best fighters in Uruha and the most powerful. He wields the Taishaku Kaiten, a trident-formed Madogu that controls gravity.

* AxCrazy: He'll kill anyone and enjoy it, but he especially loves torturing and killing women.

!!Joker
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/JokerPic_9590.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MitsuakiMadono (Japanese) and Josh Rimer (English)

A man of mystery. He just appeared out of nowhere and had a fight with Jyuushinshu member Jishou to a stalemate until Kurei witnessed his skills and decided to recruit him into Uruha. Joker only joins in one condition: If he's permitted to speak so informally all the time because being formal is a pain in the ass for him. Despite his jolly attitude, he's one of the best fighters in Uruha and the most powerful. He wields the Taishaku Kaiten, a trident-formed Madogu that controls gravity.
------
* AffablyEvil: Being FunPersonified, he's laid back, makes a lot of amusing humor and is a pretty likable character, even though he's a bad guy
* DemotedToExtra: Joker has got to be the one suffering this trope the most in the anime. His fight with Koganei gets massively cut short (he just surrendered for no reason), he didn't appear to 'blend in' with the Hokage in the previous rounds [[spoiler:and then massively wound Saichou to rile Koganei up for his fight]] and his personality gets rewritten into more TheStoic than FunPersonified.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He shows disgust when seeing Mikoto cheats and brutalizes Fuuko, asking Kurei whether it's right to draft her as a Jyuushinshu or not. Before his round starts, he made a time out specifically just to toss Mikoto out.
* FunPersonified: "It just pains me to be formal!"
* GravityMaster: His madogu, the Taishaku Kaiten can increase gravity, or decrease it, and even create miniature black holes.
%%* GravitySucks
%%* TheMole
* MonsterClown: More of an AffablyEvil jester for Kurei.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Joker acts like a complete moron, but he's actually probably the most perceptive person in the series. Seeing through Kurei's [[HiddenHeartOfGold facade]] is some mean feat!
* SixthRangerTraitor: [[spoiler:When he first debuts, he hangs around with the heroes, and offers helpful advice that helps them win a few times. Then...[[TheReveal something happened]]]].
* TakingYouWithMe: [[spoiler:His method of death]].
* VillainousHarlequin: At first

------
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: He was supposedly the strongest next to Kurei, yet is killed by Magensha in the fourth round.
** [[spoiler:Doesn't stop Kurei from resurrecting him as one of his flames in the manga]].
* InformedAbility: Jisho apparently rivaled Kurei in power, according to Kaoru. He was killed before he could tell however.
* NobleDemon: He already shows signs of this when he made a protection pact for Kurei with Raiha and Neon, but later on, he's featured in the flashback with [[spoiler:Meguri Kyouza]] and [[EvenEvilHasStandards shows utter contempt at]] [[spoiler:the thugs that personally killed Mifuyu Mikagami (when he just asked them to 'retrieve Ensui') and ignores their pleas for help as Meguri killed them in rage... and shows his condolence about Mifuyu's death before recruiting Meguri to Uruha.]]
* PosthumousCharacter: After his death and later reappearance as Kurei's flames, Jishou is fortunate enough to receive characterization via flashbacks.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Kurei [[spoiler:He is even resurrected as a flame to fight for Kurei during the fight with Recca]].
* TheWorfEffect: He is the original top 3 of Uruha Jyuushinshu aside of Neon and Raiha, but... Joker made himself known by fighting him to a stalemate. Then Magensha easily obliterated his team and personally killed him.

->'''Voiced by:''' Tamio Oki (Japanese) and Steve Olson (English)
------
* BaitTheDog: Genjurou's first introduction was pretty much tame, showing less inclination to punish Koganei for his betrayal and just pondering how good youth was. During the first and second round of Ura Butou Satsujin, he had his chimera devour his opponents alive, but that seemed normal for a 'bad guy' like him. It's only in the third round forward that he showed his true nature: Using Menou's father to blackmail her into fighting, and then revealing that unlike other Uruha Jyuushinshu, [[ItsAllAboutMe he absolutely has no moral compass or loyalty to Kurei and only in for himself]].
* DirtyOldMan: He gropes Neon in the anime. And even offers to let her live, if she'll be his concubine.
* EvilGenius: He's a talented doctor, and can even remove non physical diseases from a person's body with psychic surgery.
* EvilOldFolks: Up there with Mori Kouran and Kaima as one of the most depraved old men in the series.
* MadScientist: Since he doesn't believe god exists, he has no problem being completely immoral.
* MasterOfIllusion: He can make seven clones of himself in order to fight his enemies.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler:It may have been a clone, but it still counts]].
* TheStarScream: To Kurei, having a grudge towards him after being beaten by him and forced into the group.

* BigBadWannabe: Kurei shows in a very painful way why a "failure" like her can't be considered TheDragon.
* BreakTheHaughty: She's usually happy go lucky. But her second meeting with Kurei results in a vicious beatdown, along with Kurei telling her she's a failure.
* DaddysLittleVillain: To Mori, but a little too close. Doesn't seem to understand why [[TheUnFavorite Aoi]] hates her so much.

* PlayingWithFire: She's a clone of Kurei using Kurenai's DNA, so she's able to use fire. [[spoiler: which ultimately leads her to be devoured by Tendo Jigoku.]]
* PureIsNotGood: See below.
* PsychopathicManchild: She has a young woman's body, but the mind of an innocent and [[AxCrazy batshit insane]] little girl.
* SiblingRivalry: She ''likes'' to think that there's this chemistry between her and Kurei (who is like an older brother to her, since she thinks of herself as Mori's daughter). Kurei, on the other hand, registers her as trash unworthy of his rivalry, as well as an insult to Kurenai's memory, and proceeds to disabuse her of this notion via a thorough [[CurbStompBattle curb stomp]] the second time they meet.
* SmugSnake: Like Mori, she thinks her flame is super powerful and is not afraid to show it off to experienced flame masters like Recca and Kurei. In actuality she's fairly weak and her flame doesn't even have a real form, which means it's no more than cheap imitation to Kurei.
* TooDumbToLive: Overestimates her flame power and thinks she can take on Kurei. ''Actually'' meets and flaunts her ability around to Kurei, who believes the flame is a prized possession of his bloodline. ''Then'' compares herself to Kurei's dead girlfriend Kurenai and talks smack about her. She's only alive after Kurei beats the hell out of her because he wants to let Tendou Jigoku to finish the job [[spoiler:which he does]].

Due to the anime being cut short, he presumably dies when fleeing the Ura Butou Satsujin from the wrath of Recca and Kurei... only for Kurei to successfully ambush him and then blow his car up together with him.
