The PlayerCharacter of the game, who can be either male or female. He/she begins as a generic student at Tsukumihara Academy, but soon realises that they have no memories of their true identity. After becoming one of the 128 participants in the Holy Grail War, they can choose a Servant of the Saber, Archer or Caster class. They are known as "Hakuno Kishinami" (male in the Manga, [[Anime/FateExtraLastEncore Anime]], and the drama CD) (In addition both genders are equally featured in promotional and side materials).

* AdaptationalNameChange: Unlike manga and drama CD adaptations where Hakuno Kishinami's name is 岸波白野 in Kanji, Hakuno Kishinami's name in the anime is 岸浪ハクノ with a completely different first name and altered last name. * ChickMagnet: For being as average as they are, they do pretty well for themselves, regardless of gender. The protagonist even wins the affections of both Aozaki sisters.
* ClassicAntiHero: Mediocre in almost every aspect apart from their dogged refusal to just roll over and die, Hakuno winds up killing other Masters with grander ambitions and characters than theirs simply because they want to live. Even though dialogue choices are available to the player, the story and character interactions are linear and only change between silly or serious options. * ThePowerOfHate: In the anime, Hakuno more or less admits to this. For some reason, he feels extreme hatred towards the Moon Cell, and it empowers him to {{Determinator}} levels. [[spoiler:This is because he's a Dead Face, which is basically a walking personification of hatred.]]

* PurelyAestheticGender: There are very few dialogue changes or differences in gameplay based on your chosen gender. For example, aside from one optional comment, Caster will still refer to the female protagonist as her husband, Issei will accuse you of talking to Rani out of lust, and random Masters will clearly act as though the protagonist is either male or a lesbian. On the other hand, the female protagonist has some bonus dialogue with Archer, which is quite funny.

However, at multiple times, their Servants (especially Saber) mention that they have a very beautiful voice. Naturally, this is dropped in the anime.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: Both Saber and Rin note many times of their determined eyes when they have their goal set in mind. In ''CCC'', BB's infatuation with the protagonist often revolves around the fact that she likes their glaring eyes, and her Secret Garden is the only one that has the "looking into each other's eyes" pose. Even ''Gilgamesh'' thinks that Hakuno's eyes are "pleasing" when [[spoiler:he got sealed by BB and his "instinct" appears before them]].

The Master of Rider. Like his ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' counterpart, he is a "friend" to the Protagonist in the loosest sense of the word, behaving like an arrogant and childish bully. His objective in the Holy Grail War is simply to win for the prestige.

CCC Fox Tail is this UpToEleven [[spoiler:admitting that he does see Hakuno as a friend and doing all that he can to save him from Kazuradrop. * AdaptationalVillainy: His anime counterpart turns on Hakuno and tried to kill him before the Grail War even starts, whereas his game version at least acted as though they were friends until they learned they were matched up against each other. Even then, his game counterpart only did so under the rules, and thought the whole thing was a game.

** If the protagonist loses said battle, however, the emphasis is put on the Jerk part. [[KickTheDog He basically says he hates you for challenging him, still thinking it's a game.]] This is because all of your dialogue options before it starts have either you or your Servant throwing his offer back in his face.
** At the start of CCC, when he faced deletion, the protagonist tries to help him. But he tries to get them away by shouting abuses, because that's just the way 'friends' are.
** In Last Encore, he manages a nice and peaceful city built for people who don't want to keep fighting.

The Master of Archer, an elderly soldier who serves the Queen of England. His absolute adherence to chivalry puts him at extreme odds with his Servant, whose own method of fighting is incompatible with Blackmore's ideals.

* AdaptationalVillainy: The corruption of the Moon Holy Grail War by Chakravartin in the anime adaptation has marooned him and Archer on the second ring of the Moon Cell. Having been trapped there for more than 50 years [[spoiler:after having already lost 999 years ago but given a second chance with the possibility that Moon Cell never recorded his HonorBeforeReason behavior]], he has lost much of his honor and only strives to kill Masters and Servants as quickly as possible in the hopes that doing so enough (he has slain about 30 by the time Hakuno and Saber cross paths with him) will fix the system and finally allow him and his Servant to ascend. This can be seen in him attempting to snipe Hakuno the moment he enters the floor; the Dan Blackmore from the game would have been insulted at the thought of something so ruthless and unnecessary.

Unless you're playing on Easy mode (which gives you access to fountains that restore both a Master and Servant's HP and MP), you'll quickly run out of MP and facing the problem of MagicIsRareHealthIsCheap. Even if you're on a New Game Plus and have access to the Formal Wear that allows you to restore a Servant's MP, the only MP-restoring items available until the sixth day of the third week restore a Master's MP by a whopping ''two'' and ''three'' MP per item. It costs 60 MP to restore a "moderate" amount of your Servsnt's MP via Code Cast... enjoy those 20 Yakisoba Breads.
** ''Charm: Spirit Theft'' allows Caster to steal MP whenever using the ''Break'' command, but it also costs 20 MP per use, so she needs to absorb ''at least'' 20 MP for the skill to be profitable... and then not die in the process. Go ahead, spam ''Break'' so Caster can fill up her MP. With her [[LampshadeHanging notably poor defence and HP]], what's the worst that could happen? It's not a bad option, but maximizing the MP gain from the skill typically means dragging out a fight as long as possible versus an enemy program, which makes the already tedious LevelGrinding even more so, particularly since Caster's melee damage is low and her ''Curse'' skills are the best way for her to deal with mooks.
** Subverted once you've earned enough skill points to unlock ''Breath of the Soul'', a passive skill that automatically restores 10% of Caster's maximum MP after a battle. Coincidentally, by the time you have the points to unlock the skill, Caster will have at least 300 MP, meaning her ''Curse'' skills are now free: at 30 MP each, she can use one against enemy programs while dungeon crawling and will have the MP restored after the battle. Hallelujah! (And since her MP growth is so high, as Caster continues to level up, she can easily restore 40+ MP via her passive.)
** Arguably played completely straight with her final skill, however, which costs 80 MP, deal's heavy damage , and has a chance to inflict Poison for ''six turns''. Unfortunately, it can only be used when Caster's HP is at 30 percent or lower (which is the point at which her HP bar begins flashing red) and it's [[SquishyWizard very difficult to lower Caster's HP to that point without bypassing the red zone for a Game Over]]. Since most players typically use an item or Code Cast to Heal during turns when it's likely their Servant will take heavy damage, this makes achieving the requisite low health even more of a gamble: you not only need Caster's HP to be lowered, but you also have to be certain it won't actually hit zero at the end of the turn, deliberately forgoing healing just so you have the option of using Land of Eternal Bane ... or you could follow the standard plan of stun-locking bosses and enemies, which is where Caster excels. It doesn't help that a translation error states that the skill requires Caster's HP to be ''above'' 30%, leading many players to cast the skill at full health and then helplessly watch as Caster did nothing, the word "FAILED" appeared, and the boss attacked.

His ego is so great that he does not bother to hide his identity as the famous Babylonian king who was said to own all of the world's treasures.

His Noble Phantasm is the Gate of Babylon, a portal leading to the treasury containing the thousands upon thousands of Noble Phantasms he collected during his lifetime. As he lacks the proficiency to wield most of them, Gilgamesh mainly uses them as projectiles or shields. However, he does have a few favourites: such as the anti-World Noble Phantasm Ea, a drill-sword that he uses for his devastating Enuma Elish FinishingMove.

His Noble Phantasm is Vasavi Shakti: O Sun, Abide to Death, the spear that Indra (king of the Devas) granted to Karna after being shamed by the latter's unflinching generosity and self-sacrificial honour. As the mightiest weapon of Indra, Vasavi Shakti is a spear of light that can take down even gods, but can only be used by Karna once.

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:His reaction when he used a command seal to force Suzuka to use her final Noble Phantasm when she was losing against Minamoto-No-Raikou after he saw Raikou's master decided to respect her servant's wishes. This feeling intensified when Suzuka collapsed due to her power overwhelming her servant container.]]

* TheDitz: She's quite the airhead, with Caster saying her swordsmanship is more her flailing around than a martial art.
* DumbassNoMore: Her second Noble Phantasm, ''Shoutouren'', greatly increases her intelligence. She even states that as a result of this Noble Phantasm, she can [[MouthfulOfPi recite every digit of Pi]].

Their main reason for fighting is to protect their Masters who just so happen to be on the opposite sides]].
