** Due to JapaneseRanguage at work, her given name has been officially localized as either "Altria" or "Artoria". In Japanese, it's phonetically "A-ru-to-ri-a" either way. Notably, it's stated in her profile that her legend is partially based off that of Lucius ''Artorius'' Castus, a Roman. As a result, her name being spelled as "Artoria" makes more sense etymologically as it's the exact feminine version of Artorius in Latin. In this game, "Altria" is used as mandated by Creator/TypeMoon, which is especially noticeable considering that other localized main Fate entries that feature her, like ''VideoGame/FateExtellaTheUmbralStar'' and [[VideoGame/FateExtellaLink its sequel]] (which came out after the mandate) have used "Artoria". To throw in further confusion, [[http://fategrandorder.wikia.com/wiki/Cool-Mint_Chocolate_Bullet?file=Portrait_CE_0740.png Altria Alter's swimsuit version's]] chocolate from the next Valentine's event has "Artoria" inscribed in the case, which was later changed to read "Altria" instead. ** This is acknowledged in a bit of [[invoked]]{{Woolseyism}}[=/=]stealth [[WriterRevolt Translator Revolt]] upon the NA release of Shinjuku. In the original Japanese, a line of dialogue outright says that Saber's name Artoria is the feminine form of Artorius, and that it sounds fine and graceful. In English, her name remains Altria but is stated to be "a corruption" of the feminine form of Artorius, and that it fits a corrupted Saber, since she is Saber Alter at present.

* MasterOfNone: His stats are in the average range for his rarity as a Saber, leaning towards being a StoneWall with higher than average HP, but lower than average ATK, but his kit is all over the place with this in mind. His first skill is a Debuff Removal and a rather small NP Charge buff for three turns, his second skill inflicts the rare Terror debuff that at most has a measley 40% chance to work at max level alongside a 3-hit evasion, and his third skill buffs his Star Gather Rate for his only Buster card. The only part of his kit that truly works well with his QQAAB setup is his NP giving a Quick buff, but it is tied to Overcharge. Compared to his fellow single target Quick-focused Saber Okita (who, despite having a QQABB setup, has better-sustained damage, and better NP Gain and a Critical Star Drop Rate with her Quick cards since her Quick cards have a 5-hit count as opposed to Astolfo's 3-hit count), he doesn't really stand out. The only advantage Astolfo has over Okita is his utility (since his Noble Phantasm inflicts NP Seal, which allows him and his teammates to buy an extra turn or two), and his better solo potential (since he has Debuff Removal, something Okita cannot do; as well as having a 3-hit Evade for three turns as opposed to Okita's 1 turn Evade).

** In the series of welfare Servants of 4* rarity that are given for free for limited-time events, she's an artifact of her time. First, she was distributed to players as a promo Servant who pre-registered into the game before ''FGO'' was launched, but with only one copy for a level one Noble Phantasm until "Saber Wars" ([[LeaningOnTheFourthWall which is lampshaded during the event]]). She's also the only welfare Servant to be re-released in a different event since her premier ("Saber Wars") which also gives five total copies of her so players can upgrade her to max NP level by the end of the event even if they didn't pre-register (and giving other players their first spare welfare card).

As mentioned above, Altria Lily's stats are much closer to a 3* Servant's and she's mainly a 4* for aesthetic purposes rather than gameplay.

He eventually grows out of this however thanks to the Protagonist's influence.

* MyGreatestFailure: He is reluctant to reunite with any of his former opponents from his very first Holy Grail War due to how he helped facilitate their deaths for what he thought was a noble cause only to find out that he was grossly deceived and that they and all their Masters were killed for nothing. Said foes and allies don't actually begrudge him for that, but Arthur has a hard time forgiving himself, going so far as to disguise himself when joined the third Nero Fest because he knew that Arash, Ozymandias, and Brynhildr would be present at the Event.
* NiceGuy: The most striking difference between him and his counterpart. Arthur is unerringly chipper and supportive in contrast to Altria's more reserved nobility. This is because of his interaction with a young Ayaka during ''Fragments of Sky Silver'' where talking to her made him realize that there was simply ''no sense'' in spending his days mourning Camelot when the world his kingdom left behind was still there to protect, something he carries into ''Fate/Prototype'' proper and a realization Altria sadly had no equivalent of in ''Fate/Zero'' until her interactions with Shirou in ''Fate/stay night''.

* TheArtifact: Excalibur's reputation as a virtually unrivaled Noble Phantasm was undercut over the years as newer Servants like Karna showed off Noble Phantasms compared to literal nukes. ''VideoGame/FateExtellaTheUmbralStar'' would later address this, revealing that Excalibur has several seals on its power, much like the Excalibur Proto version, and was even used to repel Sefar, an alien superweapon that defeated many pantheons including the Olympians 14,000 years ago.

* BoringButPractical: Her skillset was very basic, having been introduced to the game near the beginning. While she wasn't be shattering any damage records, her combination of Charisma and Mana Burst made her a reliable farming Servant for much of the game's content. The BalanceBuff to her Intuition A adds an NP charge on top of that to make it even easier to farm with the help of a Merlin. The uptime on Shining Path EX is also nothing to sneeze at either, with its five-turn cooldown allowing her to NP spam quite reliably. This trope doesn't apply anymore with the upgrade of her Mana Burst A into Dragon Reactor B, giving her the unique ability to turn all of her cards into Buster cards for one turn.

* PowerCreep: As one of the first 5* Servants in the game, her vanilla skillset and low stats and hit-count made her inferior amongst her peers. Many later 5* Sabers could either do the same things better, or were much better suited to their respective niches. The only thing she had going on was her high [=AoE=] damage after her first NP upgrade, but even her 4* Alter and Lily variants could deal better damage for lower cost. Alter form who is a rarity lower than her could beat her damage output for a lower cost. She had to wait until the tenth Rank Up Campaign to receive another upgrade, three long years after her debut. Said upgrade gave her an NP Charge skill, which significantly improved her performance as a farming Servant. The Fifth Anniversary would eventually buff her Mana Burst skill into Dragon Reactor Core, which makes Altria one of the more consistent Busters Servants. Those two buffs have allowed her to stay relevant in the game's "Buster meta" of the later years, thanks to the addition of Append Skills and Koyanskaya of Light during the Sixth Anniversary, which make Altria one of the premier [=AoE=] Buster Sabers in the game thanks to the tools she already has, including her Overcharge effect since day 1.
* PowerLimiter: It's revealed in her Interlude that like the ''Prototype'' version of Excalibur, her sword also has thirteen seals put upon it that restrains its full potential. However, unlike the Prototype version, there's no need for a voting process as she can remove them one-by-one by herself. Her interlude focuses on meeting the requirements for the "one's comrades-in-arms should be champions" oath. She has never been able to use its full power thanks to the rather demanding restrictions. At full power it was the only reason the White Titan Sefar was even slain in the past but said seals have not been released since.

* {{Retcon}}: Her Excalibur was never mentioned to have a PowerLimiter on it in the form of the thirteen seals, like her ''Prototype'' counterpart. Originally the only limits Excalibur has was a combination of the massive mana cost to use it, and her Master's own power to allow her to use it. Currently, it has several seals that actively limit it's usage, relative to what it's being used against, allowing it to scale to so strengths capable of defeating Safer, but then scaling down to be parried by Cu's Gae Bolg.
* SealedEvilInACan: Part of her Interlude to powering up Excalibur is to make the MC and Mash into "Champions". She does this by releasing some daemons and a dragon for them to fight; that she had sealed away long ago. (When Roman complains that King Arthur was never said to have the power to summon, she mentions that [[AWizardDidIt Da Vinci gave her a magic scroll for that purpose]]).

** She received a Rank Up Quest for the 8th Anniversary that buffs Her Mana Burst A to Mana Burst (Inverted Scale) A, which overhauls the skill to give her a Buster buff and an On-Attack-Activate buff that gives her 10% NP Charge every time she uses a Buster card (including her NP) to hit an enemy both for three times, and an Ignore Invincibility buff, all for three turns. It should also be noted that when applied to her NP, it counts for all enemies hit with it, so she can refund a minimum of 40% of her gauge with just a full three-enemy wave clear and the base Overcharge on her NP.

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In her first appearance in ''Fate/stay night'' she was cold and apathetic with her only concern being fulfilling her Master's orders, with her appearance in ''ataraxia'' introducing her fondness for junk food to differentiate her from the uncorrupted Altria. Then comes this version. While she's still very cold and apathetic, she is more of a KnightInSourArmor with said fondness taken to extreme levels where she makes a hideout out of a burger restaurant basement. Really the only real difference between the two Altria's now is that one is a bit of a jerkass.

** While several characters receive multiple versions throughout the history of the game, no two versions share the same rarity ''and'' class at the same time (not counting Prototypes), except Altria Alter and Altria Lily who are both 4* Sabers, and Abigail and Abigal (Summer) who are both 5* Foreigners. As mentioned below, Altria Lily's stats are much closer to a 3* Servant's and she's mainly a 4* for aesthetic purposes rather than gameplay.

* GlassCannon: MightyGlacier characterization aside, she's this trope in-game with middling HP but high ATK for her rarity (she's barely in the top 10, but above even some 5* Servants), a purely offensive skillset, and a very overtuned Noble Phantasm that ''starts'' at a 450% damage modifier instead of the usual 300%, making her NP stronger than even those that have had an upgrade from an Interlude or Rank Up Quest. One consequence is that Alter's NP did almost the same damage as her higher rarity non-Alter form's (prior to the latter's new upgrade) despite lower base ATK! Her skill upgrade also makes her this trope even more, now that she has left the MightyGlacier archetype.

She made her first appearance in ''Grand Order'' as an antagonist in the Rome chapter, originally to coincide with the release of ''VideoGame/FateExtellaTheUmbralStar'', where she is a main character (though the timing got skewed when ''Extella'' was delayed by a few months). She later appears as an antagonist during the "All the Statesman" event in ''Grand Order'' as well as one of the protagonist's seven summoned Servants in the Anime/FateGrandOrderFinalSingularityGrandTempleOfTimeSolomon adaptation.

** Tactics was strengthened during the FGO 4th Anniversary event to Scourge of God, increasing her party NP damage buff to 20% at max level while increasing its duration to three turns and removing all enemies' defensive buffs. This greatly increased the skill's individual and teamwide viability as it no longer restricts all servants to having to perform their NP's on the same turn while also, when combined with Natural Body, making Altera herself an unstoppable offensive force as her damage can be neither mitigated nor defended against.

* CharacterExaggeration: Since she's already a major, serious character in another game and there's already quite a few "AmbiguouslyHuman, expressionless badass" characters originating from ''Grand Order'', Altera is mostly employed as a gag character outside of a few serious moments in the main story. * MasterOfNone: She's evolved into this as a result of her fellow Sabers getting buffs that have elevated them higher then she is. Prior to the buffs other Sabers like Altria, Mordred, and Arthur got, she was a versatile Saber who could be used as a solid farmer, boss fighter, and general use in other modes due to focusing on a JackOfAllStats kit and stats, but her lack of unique kills like an NP battery caused her to largely be over shadowed by others of her play style. All of the other AOE Buster Sabers have since gotten unique buffs that make them powerful, on top of any already existing unique elements like Mordred's anti-Arthur focus or Arthur's anti-large damage. For example: Altria now does more damage then her with her Charisma and Instinct buffs, Mordred and Arthur now have better crit star usage then her, and later Servants like Ibuki-Douji have powerful kits and unique abilities to make them stand out. She isn't outright terrible by any means due to her having a solid kit with good potential, but among the AOE Buster Sabers, she's doesn't really stand out anymore without more unique buffs.

** [[JustForPun Pun from his home storyline aside]], Arthur has higher Strength, Endurance and NP than Altria (with lower Mana and Luck and equal Agility), and his version of Excalibur is multi-hit [=AoE=], also carrying with it an automatic NP damage buff. Altria's standard version from ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'', by contrast, deals flat damage--and only her Alter version can deal multiple hit-damage, with no buffs at that.
