** Super Saiyan 3. He's the only character shown to be capable of achieving it in the anime besides Goku (not even his fusees can) and he even intended it as his ace-in-the-hole against Super Buu which it lived up to when he finally used it and stopped screwing around, but the state uses so much power that Gotenks can only use it for five minutes.

* TheLoad: As powerful as he is, Gotenks becomes this due to his childish and arrogant nature, caring more about showing off and making himself look cool than actually saving the world, which bites him in the ass ''big-time'' when he goofs around, which just keeps making the situation worse; in this order, he gets himself and Piccolo trapped in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, enables Buu to escape and eat all of his loved ones, and gets himself absorbed by Buu, allowing Buu to beat Gohan senseless. Come the Universe Survival Saga, the rest of the Z-Fighters are well aware of this, and decide right off the bat that Gotenks is ''far'' too LethallyStupid to be trusted with anything revolving around the Tournament of Power.

** In ''Super'', Copy-Vegeta, who is just as strong as regular Vegeta, [[NoSell no-sells]] all his attacks and knocks him out of his fusion form in just a couple of hits. And he did it in his ''base form'', which is admittedly god-enhanced at this point.

* AdaptationalWimp: Kefla in the anime is one of the three strongest fighters in the entire Tournament of Power, with Goku needing to go Ultra Instinct to win, and it is stated that Kefla was stronger than him with it, but the innate power of Ultra Instinct prevented her from managing to beat him. Only Jiren and Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku are for sure stronger than her, with God of Destruction Top being possibly around her level. In the Manga, while her strength is still impressive, she's comparable to Gohan's improved ultimate state due to Caulifla being significantly weaker than her anime counterpart. Kefla freely admits that Gohan is putting up a challenge; "Even though I'm merged, I can't even beat a single Saiyan".

* LeeroyJenkins: ''Immediately'' rushes into battle against Majin Buu the first time he fuses properly despite not even being a Super Saiyan. Needless to say, he gets his ass handed to him. He learned nothing from the experience and promptly flies off ''[[OhNoNotAgain again]]'' the second time he appears as well to test his powers before going to confront Majin Buu despite having less than a minute left to stay fused.

* PhysicalGod: In his debut, Gogeta immediately goes Super Saiyan, and was able to defeat Janemba in less than ''two minutes''. In ''GT'' as a Super Saiyan 4, he was toying with Omega Shenron not taking him seriously, and could have defeated him if they hadn’t defused. [[spoiler:In his official Canonical appearance, He was able to fight on par with Broly, and even shatter the fabric of Reality it self twice, and when he went Super Saiyan Blue, Broly never stood a chance and was overpowered by him.]]

å* TheAce: The fusion of two super-powerful Saiyan warriors could only result in this. He effortlessly kicks Super Buu around before letting himself get turned into candy to free his comrades. ** Played straight in terms of power, and the fact that fusion characters gain all abilities of their fusees [[note]]Barring transformations, as both fusees need to know it for the fusion character to be able to use it too. That being said, if the fusion is powerful enough, they can potentially ascend to transformations that neither fusee had reached yet, as in the case of Gotenks going Super Saiyan 3 when neither Goten nor Trunks could.[[/note]] in a case of AllYourPowersCombined, which can even be more literal when attacks are combined like the Final Kamehameha. Also, fusion characters gain all of the instincts, fighting skills, and experience of their fusees. Also, if the personalities and character traits of the fusees complement each other (I.E. their combined positive traits reduce their negative traits) then the new fusion character could end up being the perfect warrior from a mental standpoint.[[note]]For instance, Goku's positive traits are that he can relax and be laid back which reduces stress, has incredible intuitive fighting instincts, and loves fighting strong warriors for its own sake rather than it being about domination or ego-stroking. On the other hand, Goku tends not to plan ahead, tends to lead things on for his own amusement in spite of the danger, and tends to get caught off guard. In contrast, Vegeta is an excellent tactician and always thinking ahead, is always on his guard, and can reign in his battle lust when the situation calls for finishing the fight fast (and if needed, permanently). But Vegeta is often too tense cutting his effectiveness, thinks too much so he might be slow to react, and can let his ego lure him into making careless mistakes. Fuse them and you've got Gogeta or Vegito. A warrior who loves to fight, likes to show off but isn't blinded by ego, is always on guard but relaxed and confident, can think ahead and has intuitive instincts to pull off amazing stuff on the fly, and has the prudence to end a fight at the right time while finishing off someone for good if needed.[[/note]]
** Subverted when the fusees have more negative traits than positive ones, which is brought out even further in the fusion character. Gotenks for example has the combined arrogance, childishness, and lack of maturity of Goten and Trunks, making him take too long to get serious in many cases. While he is certainly a better fighter and far more powerful than either, neither of his fusees has much experience in life or death combat, which means all his attacks tend to be more show-off than practical.
** ZigZagged depending on the opponent and how well they match up to them. Kefla wasn't much good against Ultra Instinct Goku as neither Caulifla or Kale were polished fighters and had little experience with finesse or technique, whereas Ultra Instinct Goku is finesse and technique maximized plus tons of power.

* AwesomeButImpractical: The Metamoran fusion requires two partners to be perfect sync, be around a similar size, be equal in strength, and have perfect timing for a fusion that lasts half an hour and defuses even quicker the stronger it is. If there's a ''single'' mistake, you have to wait an entire half-hour to defuse while trapped in a near useless fusion. It's impossible to do this in a battlefield without someone distracting the opponent.
** All types of Fusion give a massive boost in power, but outputting too much power results in the time for the Fusion to expire more quickly. Worse, the fighters usually don't know that this'll be an issue until its already too late and the fusion breaks mid-fight.

* CompositeCharacter: No matter what the type of fusion (Potara, Metamoran, Namekian, etc), the resulting personality will be some mix between the two fusees ranging from subtle and minute to drastic and impossible to miss. The sole exceptions tend to be fusions with kais, as they tend to be the only personality regardless of other factors.

* GodzillaThreshold: Despite it not having any of the drawbacks these thresholds usually do, for Goku and Vegeta, fusion is the last resort reserved for only the [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt worst situations]]. Even once it's established that both methods of fusion [[HourOfPower are temporary]], they still don't like doing it, even though doing so makes them [[TheAce virtually unbeatable]]. Presumably, this is because it goes against their [[BloodKnight nature]] to fight using power they didn't earn (the same reason Goku gave for originally disliking the Super Saiyan God form), thus any victory they achieve using it is empty (and Vegeta just naturally detests the idea of being fused [[VitriolicBestBuds with Goku]]). They are, however, usually willing to put this aside if the situation is bad enough that more than just their lives are at stake, specifically the lives of [[PowerOfLove their families]] (and even then, Vegeta [[RunningGag always]] needs to be reminded what's at stake before agreeing). Otherwise, they won't even consider it. In the case of all other fusion pairings, however, they don't require such an extreme situation; Goten and Trunks rarely enter any fight without first fusing, for example.
* GoldenSuperMode: Excluding Kefla, every fusion character has a regular Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 forms. Gotenks is the only fusion character so far in canon to have a Super Saiyan 3 form.

* LaserGuidedAmnesia: It's noted that when the Metamoran fusion is done incorrectly, neither of the fusees remember what happened during their time in their failed fusion.
* MergingMistake: If a Metamoran Fusion Dance is done incorrectly, the fusion will turn out flawed and much weaker than its components. Two possible outcomes shown so far are an emaciated and frail version of the fused state, and a lethargic overweight one.

* OutOfFocus: Due to the nature of which the Potara and Metamoran fusions come to be, they are very scarely seen in comparison to their components, some don't even get defined personalities that significantly differentiate them from their fusees.

** Super Saiyan 3. He's the only character shown to be capable of achieving it in the anime besides Goku (not even his fusees can) and he even intended it as his ace-in-the-hole against Super Buu which it actually lived up to when he finally used it and stopped screwing around, but the state uses so much power that Gotenks can only use it for five minutes.

* BadassInDistress: He along with Piccolo are absorbed by Buu to increase his power. He has to be saved by Goku and Vegeta.

* ButtMonkey: By the ''Super'' era, he definitely counts as this. Aside from headbutting a Ginyu-possessed Tagoma [[GroinAttack in the groin]], he has yet to do anything remotely useful in the rare instances that he actually appears. He gets literally spanked by Beerus, defuses before he can even throw an attack at Frieza because of his time-consuming posturing, fails to stand up to Copy-Vegeta's base form and gets purposefully left out of the Tournament of Power. Even Mr. Satan was considered before him.
* CallingYourAttacks: He even gives names to somewhat stylized versions of otherwise normal punches and kicks, most of which are ridiculous ("''Screaming Angry WOMBAT!!!''"). He even keeps cue-cards in his vest that he reads before attacking.

* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of TheChosenOne, IdiotHero, and SmugSuper. He was created specifically to defeat Majin Buu, and Piccolo outright declares him the warrior destined to do so... but sadly, Gotenks is an immature, egotistical fool who's far more concerned with showboating and looking cool and is virtually incapable of taking things seriously even when lives are at stake, which just keeps making the situation worse; in this order, he gets himself and Piccolo trapped in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, enables Buu to escape and eat all of his loved ones, and gets himself absorbed by Buu, allowing Buu to beat Gohan senseless. Come ''Super'', the rest of the Z-Fighters [[OnceDoneNeverForgotten have yet to forget this]] and unanimously agree that Gotenks can't be trusted or relied upon for anything, especially not something as high-stakes as the [[DeadlyGame Tournament of Power]]. In the end, Gotenks shows that his particular personality makes him very much ''not'' cut out for saving the day, and that trying to forcibly create an all-powerful savior will not always be successful.

* EnergyRingAttack: Gotenks has an attack called "Galactic Donut" which has him creating a large glowing halo to bind his opponent. By binding them in multiple rings, he can trap them in a volley ball. ''VideoGame/DragonBallXenoverse2'' gives him a variation of the technique called "Super Donut Volley" which has him fire multiple energy rings that explode on contact.

* FailureHero: He's hyped up to be the warrior destined to save the universe from Majin Buu, but he utterly fails at doing so, getting his ass handed to him by Fat Buu and losing to Super Buu because he was too busy showboating and trying to make himself look cool. This continues into ''Super'', where he doesn't contribute anything useful whenever he appears; he gets literally spanked by Beerus, defuses before he can even throw an attack at Frieza because of his time-consuming posturing, and is curb-stomped by Copy-Vegeta's base form. It's to the extent that in the Tournament of Power, Goku and Vegeta decide right off the bat that after Gotenks [[NiceJobBreakingItHero screwed up so badly]] [[OnceDoneNeverForgotten while fighting Super Buu]], there's no way in Hell they're trusting him to try to save the world again.

* {{Foil}}: To Vegito and Gogeta. Vegito and Gogeta knows when they need to get things done without being a liability. For one, while on the surface, Vegito seems to prefer to play around with Gohan-absorbed Super Buu, but he is deliberately provoking him for the latter to absorb him so he could save his sons and Piccolo, and Gogeta is trying to subdue [[spoiler:Broly]], and trying to struck fear in him, and just like Vegito, he's doesn't waste time at all. Gotenks seems to prefer to goof off and not take his fights seriously, and this makes him so much of a liability that no one wants to take any chances with him for the Tournament of Power due to the stakes involved. There's a reason why Vegito and Gogeta, even with their immense power, taking the stakes seriously.

* LargeHam: He absolutely loves being overdramatic in calling his attacks.

* LethallyStupid: Because of the rash and idiotic decisions he makes in an effort to look cool, he gets himself and Piccolo trapped in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, enables Buu to escape and eat all of his loved ones, and gets himself absorbed by Buu, allowing Buu to beat Gohan senseless. This ends up being one of the many reasons the boys are not trusted with combat anymore, at least while they're still children, and are left behind when the Universe is on the line at the end of ''Super.''

* OutOfFocus: He's sporadically seen in ''Super'' but in very brief glimpses and never stays around when he does. He's not even considered as an option in ''GT''.

* ThePoorlyChosenOne: For a brief, hopeful moment in the Buu Saga, Piccolo declared that Gotenks would be [[TheChosenOne the warrior destined to save the universe from Majin Buu]]. Then we see how the full extent of how his particular personality makes him very much ''not'' cut out for it, and that trying to forcibly create an all-powerful saviour will not always be successful.
* PowerfulButIncompetent: Upon his debut, Gotenks was one of the most powerful fighters in the setting, being able to take on Super Buu with multiple tricks at his disposal and was able to reach Super Saiyan 3 with little effort. However, because of him being too thick-headed, easily distracted, and having a love of showing off that gives him a serious case of SkewedPriorities, Gotenks ends up making really reckless and stupid decisions that gives his opponents the upper hand in battle. Because of this, Goku and Vegeta disqualify Gotenks (and by extension Goten and Trunks) from the Tournament Of Power as being a potential liability. It's very telling that his only undisputed victory in the series is against a human army (an army that had just EscapedFromHell, but in all other respects they were an ordinary human military force), and that was in a NonSerialMovie.

* ShooOutTheClowns: Gotenks and his components for all their power are LockedOutOfTheLoop by Goku, Vegeta and Gohan for the Universe Survival arc, on the grounds that they are only useful fused and are too unpredictable, thickheaded and irresponsible to be trusted with any of it after [[LethallyStupid what happened with Super Buu]]. [[spoiler:And when Buu falls asleep after a sparring match with Goku, and the other Universe 7 fighters desperately need someone to fill his place, they choose ''[[AxCrazy Frieza]]'' instead. Hell, even '''''[[ButtMonkey Yamcha]]''''' AND '''''[[FakeUltimateHero Mr. Satan]]''''' were considered over Gotenks.]]

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: While Gotenks was one of the strongest fighters when he was first introduced because he is the FusionDance of the spoiled Trunks and naïve Goten, his immaturity stops him from actually ever achieving anything meaningful. For example, after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and obtaining Super Saiyan 3, the two decide to spend time creating AwesomeButImpractical attacks over spending the remaining amount of time left to train themselves or even Gotenks, resulting in many of their attacks doing nothing to Super Buu. They even hold Super Saiyan 3 back to act heroic, which causes things to get worse because they didn't account for Piccolo having a GodzillaThreshold: destroying the doorway leading back, trapping them inside. This is further shown in the ''Super'' version of ''Resurrection "F"'' as, despite Frieza being in his first form and easily beatable, all Gotenks did was fly around the world multiple times just to headbutt Tagoma in the groin. When focused on Frieza himself, his grandstanding led to his fusion running out.

* TookALevelInDumbass: Both of his parts can be foolish if not self-destructive at times, but not when it really counts, and both know when they've gone too far. Gotenks doesn't.

* UnskilledButStrong: He's one of the strongest characters in the entire ''Z'' series, only behind [[StoryBreakerPower Vegito]] and [[TheGift Gohan]] in the Buu Saga, but he's also by far the most naive. He prioritizes showing off over actually saving people and most of his techniques fall into AwesomeButImpractical. His lack of experience and self-control causes him to lose to an opponent that he overpowered (his fusion broke before he could kill Buu). And despite his power, he's still the merger of two children, who spent most of their time after obtaining Super Saiyan 3 coming up with said AwesomeButImpractical techniques rather than maximizing their own power or honing Gotenks' skills because they thought they wouldn't need to with that ace in the hole. This is just one of many reasons Goku and Vegeta refuse to let them on Team Universe 7 for the Tournament of Power, since Gotenks, for all his power, would easily be knocked out by more skilled fighters.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: When Super Buu invades the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to fight with Gotenks, the fused Saiyan deliberately downplays his power for dramatic effect, even verbally stating that Buu is overwhelming him. This causes Piccolo to blow up the doorway in an effort to strand Buu in the Chamber with them forever, at which the horrified Gotenks reveals he was faking all along. For the icing on the cake, Buu gets so mad about the lack of candy in the chamber that he discovers his ability to scream open dimensional doorways and promptly escapes, and by the time Gotenks is able to replicate the feat, Buu has killed off everybody on Kami's Lookout. [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome Because of this, nobody in his circle trusts Gotenks to be a useful fighter ever again]], [[OnceDoneNeverForgotten reminding him of this incident when Gotenks asks why he's not a candidate for the Tournament of Power team]].
* WhatTheHellHero: Called out several times, mostly by Piccolo, for his careless actions that nearly get him killed. Since he is literally the last hope for Earth, his death would be the end of everybody. He gets another one from Piccolo for faking being weak just to show off. This caused him and Piccolo to be trapped in the Time Chamber, which led to Buu escaping and killing everyone.

** Poor guy gets his ass handed to him by Beerus in ''Battle of Gods'' and its arc in ''Super'' in such a casual way that it is literally treated as a joke both times, while also establishing how strong Beerus is.

* WrongGenreSavvy: During his fight with Super Buu, Gotenks intentionally [[IAmNotLeftHanded starts off in his base form]] because he feels that [[LampshadeHanging a hero should only show his true powers when backed into a corner]].

* TheAce: The fusion of two super-powerful Saiyan warriors could only result in this. He effortlessly kicks Super Buu around before letting himself get turned into candy to free his comrades. ** Debatably in the ''Super'' manga. [[spoiler:When fighting Fused Zamasu in the anime, Vegito was able to fight evenly with him, though Fused Zamasu was able to get some solid hits in, and Vegito had to actually get serious. In the manga, Vegito easily overpowered Fused Zamasu and was effortlessly toying with him, with Shin outright comparing him to [[PhysicalGod Beerus]]. Of course, the "debatably" part is that Fused Zamasu himself is [[AdaptationalWimp much weaker in raw power]] in the manga than in the anime.]]

** Note that this trope was originally ''averted''. Prior to a retcon, the potara earrings were specifically stated to last forever (this was acknowledged to be both a blessing and a curse). Coupled with Goku and Vegeta having mastered the super saiyan form, Super Vegito had no time limit ''or'' stamina issues to worry about - essentially taking all the advantages of Gotenks with none of the downsides.
* BadassBoast: After Super Buu turns him into a candy.
--> '''Vegito''': "I'm no ordinary candy -- I'm a jawbreaker! The strongest piece of candy there is!" (The "jawbreaker" is only part of his boast; he is actually turned into a coffee candy, noted both in the English dub and Japanese original.)

** Super Buu had already absorbed both of Goku's children Gohan and Goten, Vegeta's son Trunks, and Piccolo, meaning he was far stronger than even a Super Saiyan 3 (as Gohan alone surpassed Super Saiyan 3 at the time). Also, like Majin Buu, Super Buu's Magical Regeneration was so strong that he could recover from being atomized. Vegito had to not only overpower this foe but try to destroy him without killing his friends. Vegito beats Super Buu so badly that the Majin just stops regenerating, implying that the punsihment was overwhelming his HealingFactor. Vegito ultimately decides to forego victory in favor of being absorbed and freeing his friends.
** Zamasu had perfect immortality, but fusing with a mortal has technically made the immortality imperfect (albeit still extremely powerful). Gowasu notes that Goku and Vegeta might be able to overcome the fusion if they hit it with power far in excess of what they've used so far (which goes up to and includes Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken). Also, unlike Vegito, Fused Zamasu has no time limit to his fusion. Vegito delivers several beatings to Zamasu, impales him, and blows him up with a Final Kamehameha, but ultimately defuses before he can land a Savage Strike due to overloading the Potaras. However, the damage he inflicted to Zamasu is so severe that Trunks, after absorbing the remaining energy of everyone on Earth, is able to completely destroy Zamasu's body.
** Vegito has a slightly less difficult role to play against Fused Zamasu in the manga, as the latter fusion has a time limit as well - meaning Vegito must simply hold him back until Zamasu defuses. Vegito does so with great ease, blowing half of Zamasu away and tearing his arms off while showing little to no fatigue. Unfortunately, the fusion ends prematurely before Vegito can obliterate Fused Zamasu with a Final Kamehameha.

** Downplayed in his fight with Super Buu, however, as taunting and showboating was actually part of his strategy; he wasn't going for the kill. A case could be made for his fight with Fused Zamasu, as he does spend a few seconds talking trash and then his fusion runs out prematurely.

* GeniusBruiser: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]]. While Vegito is by no means a [[ThisAintRocketSurgery rocket surgeon]], he ''is'' an unparalleled fighter not just because of his power, but because his two halves are a GeniusDitz whose area of specialty is fighting, and a WarriorPrince who's shown time and again to be extremely cunning when he needs to be. Combined, this gives him essentially two lifetimes of different fighting experiences, and he can use this experience and knowledge to adapt to his opponent on the fly. In his fight against Super Buu, he chastises Buu for thinking he can outwit him with an attack thought up by two children, and when Buu has the bright idea to reduce the visibility of the area he is in, Vegito beats him with his eyes closed because has plenty of experience with sensing Ki-energy. In his fight against [[spoiler:Fused Zamasu]], it is also noteworthy that after it becomes apparent [[spoiler:Fused Zamasu]] is matching him in brute strength through a PunchParry, Vegito immediately switches from relying on strength to avoiding-and-countering and from that point on [[spoiler:Fused Zamasu]] doesn't manage to even land a punch, although the fact the latter was constantly getting additional body mass probably wasn't helping.
* GodzillaThreshold: Due to being told that Potara Fusion was permanent[[note]]it is, but only for Kais. Non-Kais separate after an hour, less if they use up too much energy[[/note]] -- and [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy Goku and Vegeta]] really not wanting to [[HonorBeforeReason rely on something that isn't their own hard-earned strength]] -- the idea of fusing together is not given a ''single'' thought before the GodzillaThreshold is crossed. Even then, expect neither to relish it. Such was the case with Super Buu [[note]]Who had already absorbed most of their families who would be consigned to a FateWorseThanDeath if Buu won, on top of the whole ApocalypseHow situation[[/note]] and [[spoiler:Fused Zamasu[[note]]another Potara Fusion consisting of a PhysicalGod with CompleteImmortality and an EvilCounterpart to Goku[[/note]]]].

* GuileHero: Him manipulating Super Buu and frustrating him into acting desperately was ''the main plan'' to saving his sons, friend, and the whole universe.

** During the fight with Buu, he stalls finishing Buu off and instead goes to great lengths to anger Buu. He beats Buu senseless, all the while he's mocking and insulting him. All part of his plan.

* TookALevelInBadass: He was already a badass to begin with, able to beat Super Buu as a chew toy before separating in his body. In ''Super'', [[spoiler:with Goku and Vegeta's current power, which surpasses what Vegito was capable of during the Buu Saga, he is many times stronger than before and has the ability to become ''Super Saiyan Blue'']].
* TooPowerfulToLive: If this guy had stayed around, the Buu Saga would have basically ended in five minutes. And you would've written off the main character and his main foil at the same time. The same principle applies in ''Super'', where he basically had [[spoiler:Fused Zamasu]] on the ropes and if he had lasted the hour, would have killed him, [[spoiler:though the jury's out if he would have been able to handle the EldritchAbomination Fused Zamasu's spirit turned into after his physical body was destroyed]]. ''Super'' reveals why: A FusionDance lasts 30 minutes unless the fused are knocked out or use too much power which drains their time. [[spoiler:Potara lasts a full hour to non-Kais with the same restriction of power conservation; it is only permanent to the Supreme Kais.]]

If Super Buu turns Vegito into candy, Vegito still retains his power, as he is much stronger than Super Buu, and it just makes Vegito a harder target to destroy. If Super Buu absorbs Vegito, then it becomes easier for Vegito to remove his sons and friends from Super Buu's body and depower him. And if Super Buu tries to kill Vegito... Vegito would instantly slaughter him. Of course, while that option would be just as effective, it would have been personally immoral for Vegito as he would be unconsciously murdering his own sons and friends. And while they could be brought back to life with the Dragon Balls, Vegito would still have somewhat of a heavy conscience for what he did.
* YouFightLikeACow: Most well known for this. He combines Goku's sense of humor with Vegeta's arrogance and sense of humor, to both beat and mock the living daylights out of Super Buu. [[BatmanGambit Of course, this is all part of his plan]]: getting Buu pissed off and desperate enough to absorb him, so he can free everyone absorbed by Buu. [[spoiler:He does this a few times with Fused Zamasu, but not as much.]]

* {{Jerkass}}: As the rest of this entry shows, personality-wise Gotenks is essentially all of Trunks and Goten's worst traits combined, with few of their positive ones. Goten can be naive (especially during the Buu saga), but knows how to focus and learn from his mistakes. Trunks can be cocky, but does know his limits and when to do the right thing. * SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: While Gotenks was one of the strongest fighters when he was first introduced, because he is the FusionDance of the spoiled Trunks and naïve Goten, his immaturity stops him from actually ever achieving anything meaningful. For example, after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and obtaining Super Saiyan 3, the two decide to spend time creating AwesomeButImpractical attacks over spending the remaining amount of time left to train themselves or even Gotenks, resulting in many of their attacks doing nothing to Super Buu. They even hold Super Saiyan 3 back to act heroic, which causes things to get worse because they didn't account for Piccolo having a GodzillaThreshold: destroying the doorway leading back, trapping them inside.
