* AwfulWeddedLife: Due to the political nature of their union, Zog and Oona are shown to be very miserable together. It speaks something about their relationship, when their first scene together shows Oona getting FantasticArousal upon seeing Bean's handsome fiance, and Zog lamenting that she never does that for him. One episode shows that they sleep separately, with him on his bed and her clinging to the ceiling, though Oona admits she does have sex with him sometimes and on one occasion they do sleep together. Zog himself isn't particularly fond of Oona, as he greatly prefers his old wife Dagmar to her. [[spoiler:However, Oona does get ''very'' jealous after Dagmar returns and reunites with Zog.]]

** Bean and Zog both seemed pretty happy way back when their beloved mother/wife Dagmar was still alive; but after her death, Bean's relationship with her father crumbled. Zog proved to be a very bossy and authoritarian parent, constantly trying to control Bean's life as much as he could, [[ParentalIssues much to her angst]]. Now, Bean is a {{rebellious|Princess}} {{delinquent}} who does everything she can to piss off her dad, whether it's justified or not.
** Zog's marriage to his second wife Oona [[AwfulWeddedLife looks very miserable as well]]. In the first place, [[ArrangedMarriage they got married for political reasons]], rather than out of any genuine love. At best they just tolerate each other, but it's obvious that they care very little about each other's company. Bean also dislikes her stepmother, seeing Oona as a poor replacement for her real mother. And Bean also doesn't get along very well with her half-brother Derek either.
** [[spoiler:When Dagmar comes BackFromTheDead, it soon turns out that Zog's and Bean's romanticized, nostalgic memories of her have made them blind to the truth. Dagmar turns out to be one hell of a BitchInSheepsClothing, who may not have ever even actually loved her husband, as she [[TilMurderDoUsPart betrays and tries to kill him]] ''twice'' (once before [[TakenForGranite she was turned into a statue]], and once again after she's revived). She does seem to really care about Bean, but she's also manipulating her as part of a secret evil plan.]]

** While Zog never lays a hand on Bean, the way he treats her could be considered a form of emotional abuse. He rarely ever considers her feelings, and it takes a long time before he even calls off the ArrangedMarriage he's trying to force her into.
** Once when Zog was dozing off in the chapel, Oona lightly hits him awake. Zog reacts by giving Derek a slap for no reason.
** Neither Bean nor Derek appear to be allowed to have any friends, and it is implied by Bean that Zog uses murder to keep it this way. Bean only has a limited social life because she sneaks out of the castle constantly. Derek mostly seems to be confined to his room. The only reason he tolerates Elfo and Luci is because he thinks of them as "pets".

* AdiposeRex: King Zog is an overweight monarch.

* AntiVillain: While Zog is a terrible king responsible for countless unnecessary deaths of his own subjects, he's clearly very miserable with his overall life. The reason why he wants to obtain the ElixirOfLife [[spoiler:is not out of a desire to become immortal like everyone thought, but because he just really wants to resurrect his dearly missed wife Dagmar back from death so badly]].
* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: It is shown that Zog really does care for Bean.
* BadBoss: Zog treats most of his royal court employees like shit, and is hardly any better with his kingdom's subjects. He even makes a habit out of dropping the Jester through a trapdoor to the ocean. Once when Zog became violently ill and went on a trip to a spa, ''everyone'' else in the castle was relieved by his temporary absence.

* BoyfriendBlockingDad: He will execute any man that Bean tries to sleep with, and every guy who's made aware of this is too scared to even dare attempt a one-night-stand with her. [[spoiler:However, when Bean starts a genuine relationship with Mora, Zog is completely supportive.]]

Also once when Zog fell sick from an illness, he admits to [[NoodleIncident having ordered the executions of every doctor in the kingdom]].

* TheDreaded: Almost everyone in Dreamland (except for his family and a few others) are afraid of King Zog; and for good reason, because of his volcanic temper and disregard for most people's lives.
* EvenBadMenLoveTheirMamas: Zog is horrified when he finds out that Bean mutilated his dead mother's skull while plundering the royal tomb. He even tells the skull that he won't let Bean get away with it.

* FreudianExcuse: His dad, King Xog, preferred Yog (as did everyone else) openly, and considered Zog nothing but a disgrace.

* HangingJudge: As an absolute monarch, Zog has the authority to sentence criminals to be imprisoned, tortured, or executed after giving them a [[KangarooCourt short trial in the royal court]]. And he does exactly that.

* HistoricalHeroUpgrade: The statue of him sitting in the center of Dreamland was made by the Dreamlanders after they saw Zog with a mermaid and figured he killed her. Actually, Zog had crushed on her, only to back out because of a fear of drowning and bubbles. He feels ashamed about it.

* IResembleThatRemark: When Bean calls Zog selfish and cruel, he's initially outraged, until he admits that ''maybe'' she's right.

* {{Jerkass}}: Zog isn't a very pleasant man. He's a selfish and cruel tyrant who kills people for the slightest offenses, is a very controlling parent who doesn't ever consider Bean's feelings, and overall has a lot of anger issues, and has very little concern for tact or politeness.
* JerkassHasAPoint: A common joke with Zog is for him to make a perfectly reasonable criticism of Bean's drinking problem or general irresponsibility, and then immediately follow it up with a comment that reveals that [[HypocriticalHumor he's a hypocrite on the matter]], that the behavior he'd prefer to see from Bean is [[DeliberateValuesDissonance something that might have been reasonable in the Middle Ages but definitely isn't now]], or just that [[RightForTheWrongReasons he objects to her behavior for his own peculiar reasons]].

* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Zog casually hands out [[OffWithHisHead death sentences]] for anyone who crosses him, [[DisproportionateRetribution for the slightest of offenses]], such as [[AccidentalPervert seeing his topless daughter]] after she takes off her shirt in public.

* {{Narcissist}}: He has some traits of this. For one, he ordered the cook to replace the decorations on Bean's wedding cake with two of ''him''. And once when it seemed that Zog would publicly award Bean, he just gives ''himself'' a medal for his parenting skills. Also, Zog's face and name are used for the coin currency of Dreamland, and the soldiers serving under him are called the Knights of the Zog Table.

* ParentalIssues: Zog has a conflict with his daughter Bean for various reasons, one of them being that he's trying to put her through a {{political marriage}} against her wishes. Bean openly admits that her handmaiden has been more of a parent than he ever was.

* PuppetKing: [[spoiler:A conspiracy plotted to kill his brother Yog and put Zog on the throne. By the time of the present day, they've started getting tired of Zog and plot to replace him with the far more easily controlled Derek.]]
* RetiredBadass: As a younger man, Zog was a fearsome WarriorPrince and a great athlete to boot. Although [[FormerlyFit he's gotten really out of shape]] over the years, he hasn't forgotten all of his old skills. As various threats start coming his way, he is forced to step up and fight back. Unusually for the trope, all his old skills don't ''immediately'' come back, and his own self-doubt has an impact on his fighting spirit.

* SpareToTheThrone: He was never meant to be the King of Dreamland. His older brother Prince Yog was the heir to the throne until he was mysteriously poisoned. This may explain why Zog is so bad at ruling the kingdom; even he admits that he was never meant to be a ruler, and being a fighter is all he knows. In fact, the one objectively positive accomplishment that Zog had as King up to now is that he defeated Dankmire ''in a war'', forcing them to construct a canal.
* StrawMisogynist: Zog has a very traditionalist, conservative attitude regarding Bean's place as a proper noblewoman. Unlike the more contemptuously misogynistic Odval, though, he's less firmly committed to it and seems to be more driven by ignorance than malice; as he admits, having Bean be a princess and a nun are "the only girl things" he knows about, and he's usually willing to let her have her way if she pushes him enough.

* UglyGuyHotWife: Zog is fat and not much of a looker, but Oona is much slimmer and attractive. The same with Dagmar, his first wife.
* TheUnfavorite: His father openly preferred Yog, describing him as "already perfect". Zog, meanwhile, was just seen as a screw-up and embarrassment.
* VillainProtagonist: Zog is by no means a good king, but he's still one of the main characters, at least when he's not being antagonistic to his daughter.

* WarriorPrince: Before Zog became King of Dreamland, he was a formidable warlord and one of the best soldiers to serve his country.

* ChildrenAreInnocent: If anything, he seems rather naive and oblivious to most of his DysfunctionalFamily's shenanigans. [[spoiler:In "Dreamland Falls", Zog locks up Derek in the tower to protect him from even realizing that his parents hate each other so much that they're seriously considering whether or not to kill each other.]]

* HalfHumanHybrid: Due to his father Zog being a human, while his mother Oona is a Dankmirian.

* HeirClubForMen: As the only son of King Zog, Derek is the future heir to the throne of Dreamland. Bean's resentment for him comes from how he was allowed to do everything she wanted to do because he was the male heir.

* LiteralMinded: When Zog asks him to "butter up" the Dankmire court, he tries to give a speech about buttering toast, only to get completely side-tracked by that, too.

* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: [[spoiler:While being propped up as puppet king, he actually tries to be a reasonable judge during Bean's trial, and is about to acquit her. [[NotWhatItLooksLike Then he walks in on Bean digging a knife into Zog's chest.]]]]

* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: Decides to ditch Dreamland after saying that both Bean and Zog are too "emotionally draining" on him and joins Oona's pirate crew.
