* ScaryBlackMan: Can be rather intimidating. Plus, he's black.

* CrossingTheBurntBridge: Despite mockingly calling Barb a monkey throughout the film and firing her when she hesitates to carry out the order to kill Flint's friends, Chester still has the nerve to beg for her help, all while continuing to call her "monkey." This is what cements Barb's HeelFaceTurn and [[MistreatmentInducedBetrayal leads her to turn on him]].

* TheSociopath: He lies to Flint, plans to turn the innocent foodimals into food bars, and tries to shred Flint's friends alive, all without a shred of remorse (And a [[PsychopathicManchild childlike]] smile on his face).

* EntitledBastard: Despite mockingly calling Barb a monkey throughout the film and firing her when she shows hesitation to carry out the order to kill Flint's friends, Chester still has the nerve to beg for her help, all while continuing to call her "monkey." This is what cements Barb's HeelFaceTurn.

* BitchInSheepsClothing: Seems like your typical supportive and well-intentioned mayor. However, his gluttony consuming him allows the audience (and eventually the other characters) to realize what truly inconsiderate and greedy bastard he really is.

* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Mayor Shelbourne leaves the town to rot by escaping on a boat made of giant food. As he's escaping, he eats the boat...which, y'know, means he doesn't get very far away from town.

* {{Greed}}: Obviously. The man doomed the whole world ordering an all you can eat buffet.

** Averted in that he's the one who causes the machine to be overworked. The giant meatball the FLDSMDFR creates in the climax is solely because he ordered a "Vegas-style all-you-can-eat buffet" after it is explicitly evidenced, wholly encountered, and nearly actively prevented by Flint that the food the machine is producing more...mutated larger portions due to a larger intake of water.

* KarmaHoudini: Subverted, it looked liked he got away scot-free for overloading the food machine, which led to the disasters, and pinning the blame on Flint. But he doesn't get far in his escape and the credits show he was arrested by Earl. [[spoiler:[[DoubleSubversion However]], he escapes right after that. He also appears as a cameo in the sequel, selling corndogs.]]

* {{Flanderization}}: Averted. He is the same in the TV series, but he's more of a ButtMonkey when his son makes him try his inventions.

* ProperlyParanoid: While his attitude with Flint in the first film is shaky, it's not without justification.

* DitzyGenius: He's a talented inventor, but his inventions have a habit of not working.

* GeekyTurnOn: He immediately falls for Sam when he sees her knowledge of science.

* {{Foil}}: To Chester V. Both are inventors who developed a love of science from a young age, bullied for their inability to fit in, and who went on to create great inventions related to food. This is where the similarities end however, as Flint's ultimate desire is to use his inventions for the betterment of his community and his love of science in spite of their mistreatment of him, and [[AcquiredSituationalNarcissism while prone to moments of selfishness]] and tendency for his inventions to have variable success rates, he ultimately will ''never'' abandon the loved ones who have helped him get to where he is today. [[spoiler: By contrast, Chester V ultimately allowed his past misery to form a deep disdain for personal relationships, especially towards those he not only views as getting in the way of science, but also towards people he views as cruel towards geeks like himself,[[ReformedBully even if they've changed for the better.]] As such, he surrounds himself entirely with holograms as his only trusted allies, with any living beings either subordinates or lackies who are completely disposable and treated with nothing but callous disregard. Despite being the one who inspired scientists like Lockwood and being capable of inventing scientific marvels, he is also not above stealing other people's ideas and creations for his own gain.]]

* Gratuitous Spanish: He speaks Spanish in a few times.

* {{Flanderization}}: The TV series turns him into such a BunnyEarsLawyer, and he is more prone to smiling.

* UglyCute: Even the ones that aren't "conventionally" cute have plenty of charm of their own.

* UndyingLoyalty: To Flint.

* Adorkable: She's a very dorky nerd and her personality is very endearing and adorable.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Justified for a wild animal let alone a monkey. He loves to wreck things and rip off mustaches for no reason. This is taken up to 11 in the sequel, where he destroys a cake, steals every food he sees, humiliates Flint at the ceremony, and attacks him after suggesting to go through the grocery deliverator rather than the boat. However, he still tries to help Flint out even though he fails and protected Manny from the gummy bears.

* ParantalIssues: While Flint and his father Tim do love each other, it is clear in the first film that his more difficult relationship is with him. This is likely due to Tim being unsure how to express his feelings which makes him come across as distant and uncaring. This does make Flint spend a lot of the first film wanting his dad to be proud of him for his inventing.

* FatalFlaw: Flint is naive and always seeks the approval of others.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Flint's selfish tendencies throughout both movies indirectly led to the climax that could've been avoided. But, on both occasions he learned his lesson, owned up, and fixed his mistakes. Other than that he's a NiceGuy.

* MommasBoy: While his mother's been deceased for a decade, he was a lot closer to her than he was with his father.

* NiceGirl: A sweet and fun woman.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: A very downplayed example. His [[TechnologicallyBlindElders lack of understanding for technology]] coupled with his [[CantSpitItOut difficulties in expressing himself]] make it extremely hard for him to bond with Flint. Despite this, it's very clear that he loves his son and wants him to succeed in life.

%%* ParentsAsPeople: Tim isn't a FantasyForbiddingFather by any means, he just has a hard time bonding with his son over something he's personally not cut out for.

* ShesGotLegs: While she's the same height as Flint, he's your normally-proportioned [[NoodlePeople noodle person]] while she's about two-thirds leg.

* AmbiguousDisorder: Flint is definitely a bit of an oddball, and has many traits characteristic of autism. While he's a kind person, he's socially awkward, tends to talk in a fast, loud way that makes it difficult for others to follow, takes things literally or thinks of things in regard to how they apply to science, and seems to misunderstand how to interact with others (such as when he is confused about how to win a snowball fight). While he improves over the course of the movie, he's pretty reclusive and tends to get wrapped up in his work. Meanwhile, he gains confidence when he's talking about his interests, and his obsession with science and inventions could be seen as a special interest of sorts. He's even shown to have some difficulty looking into his father's eyes, as many autistic people have difficulty with direct eye contact.

* BigBad: Of the sceond movie, though he can also be thought of as this for the franchise as a whole.
