* [[TheHero The Heroine]]: She's the central character and main good guy of the entire saga.

* BladeOnAStick: Her glaive, [[ICallItVera Devilslayer]].

* OverprotectiveDad: Certainly veers into it at times. Part of his own character development is coming to terms with when his daughters need him and when it's better to let go.

* AmbiguouslyBrown: Discussed in ''Fire in the Blood''. While some tieflings have [[AmazingTechnicolorPopulation weird skin tones that don't occur naturally in humans]], Fari (and Havi, by extension) has tawny-golden skin that would be unusual but not impossible on a human. She and Dahl briefly speculate as to the exact combination of ethnicities in her heritage that could have produced it when trying to trace her family tree. [[spoiler: Vaasan, as it turns out, mixed with a few others]].

* HornyDevils: Downplayed. He's not an incubus so it's not actually part of his powers, but he's extremely handsome, knows it, and is perfectly willing to use his sex-appeal to keep people off-balance. Notably, he's ''very'' flirty with Farideh, but is much more reserved and businesslike with Havilar, as he knows he's not her type and trying to seduce her wouldn't get him very far.

* AdultFear:
** The books hint at just how utterly terrifying it is for both daughters of a single father to up and vanish for seven years.
** Farideh's situation in general is this for him. Your daughter has made a bargain with a manipulative, sociopathic entity who means her no good and you have ''no way'' of helping her, compounded with the fear that he'll corrupt her and you'll have to fight (and potentially kill) her. ''Ouch''.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Downplayed. Fari's hair is mostly black, but with some purple undertones.

* BaldOfEvil: Keeps her head shaved, and she's very much a devil in the classic mold.
* BaldWomen: No hair on her head, though this is because she keeps it shaved; when she goes without for too long, the fuzz that starts growing in is [[WhiteHairBlackHeart silver]].

* NotSoDifferent: Openly, Havilar is the daughter who most resembles him, but his tendency to brood and internal conflict over his place in the world and his relationships with other characters are much closer to Farideh than either of them realizes. [[spoiler: They also share a tendency to fall for charismatic but selfish and manipulative men]].

* DealWithTheDevil: Makes one with Sairche. He actually manages pretty well with it, probably by virtue of being NotSoDifferent from a devil himself.

* CombatTeleportation: One of her most commonly-used spells is a form of short-range teleportation that she typically uses to quickly maneuver around a battlefield.

* CuteMonsterGirl: Genderflipped; he's a cute monster ''guy''.

* MarkOfTheSupernatural: Her heterochromia is treated as this my many characters, though to all indication it's just a normal physical feature. Her warlock brand, on the other hand...

* LadyOfBlackMagic: Borderline example. As a warlock, her magic is highly focused on destruction and offense, and in addition she's rather too reserved for BlackMagicianGirl but not mature or regal enough to fully be this.

* [[SquishyWizard Squishy Warlock]]: She's not ''terribly'' squishy (she usually wears armor and carries a sword) but physical combat is ''not'' where her skills lie and she's very much aware of it. She gets somewhat better across the series, though swordplay still isn't her forte.

* LightIsNotGod: He's associated with bright light and the color gold and these manifest in both his wardrobe and his magic, but he's a brutal conqueror.

* GodInHumanForm: What he claims to be. The truth is somewhat more ambiguous; his magical powers, while impressive for a mortal, are less than what an avatar would be expected to wield, and nobody's quite sure what's going on with him.

* CrazyJealousGuy: Whenever Farideh is in the same room as any other similarly-aged male, but ''especially'' Dahl.

* DomesticAbuse: His relationship with Farideh always had shades of this. [[spoiler: Becomes a lot more obvious when they briefly hook up in ''Fire in the Blood''.]]

* HalfHumanHybrid: As a cambion, he's half-devil, half-mortal.

* HornyDevils: Downplayed. He's not an incubus so it's not actually part of his powers, but he's extremely handsome, knows it, and is perfectly willing to use his sex-appeal to keep people off-balance.

* NormalFishInATinyPond: At first, he seems overwhelmingly powerful. Then we see what his home life is like...

* SociopathicHero: Well, he ''is'' a devil. He does have the odd twinge of empathy or conscience, but it mostly annoys him more than anything.
* TokenEvilTeammate: On those occasions he's present in the flesh.

* InterspeciesRomance: She's a tiefling, but her two main love interests [[spoiler: Lorcan and Dahl]] are [[spoiler: a cambion and a human, respectively]].

* BlingOfWar: After taking her mother's job as commander of the ''pradixikai'', she wastes no time in loading herself down with Invadiah's gaudiest armor and jewelry, which Lorcan lampshades.

* DomesticAbuser: His relationship with Farideh always had shades of this. [[spoiler: Becomes a lot more obvious when they briefly hook up in ''Fire in the Blood''.]]

* BadassGrandpa: Old enough to have an adult daughter, but he can still hold his own.
