* JerkassRealization: [[spoiler: In ch80 he finally has this...however, how it is portrayed suggests this is [[DeconstructedTrope not]] a good thing.]]

* {{Foil}}: To Izumo since while both are tamers she is friendly and humble, as oppossed to Izumo's abrasive and proud personality. Even their character designs and hair/eye colors are opposite of each other.

* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Her main motivation is to make friends. [[spoiler: To the point Shiemi actually has no interest in romance.]]

* ShrinkingViolet: At first, she was very shy and withdrawn. She grows out of it and even before she did, she shows signs in her debut chapter of being more outgoing than her shyness first allows.

* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: She's the girly girl to Izumo's tomboy. It's because she's sweeter than [[{{Tsundere}} Izumo]] and her tendency to wear kimonos.

* ZettaiRyouiki: After getting her school uniform. It's quite the contrast with her kimono.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: First appearance he came across as a straight up {{Jerkass}} but ultimately reveals he does care and means well. At the same time, he's quick to take offence, has a serious ItsAllAboutMe problem, and makes many assumptions that aren't true on top of his hot temper. In other words, he works as a serious [[DeconstructedTrope deconstruction]] of the concept; just because he means well does not mean he's not being a jerk.

* SmarterThanYouLook: He looks like a typical delinquent, but he's actually one of the smartest of the cram school students. [[LampshadeHanging Rin is actually surprized that he gets good scores]].

* HimeCut: She claims to have a relation to a {{miko}}. [[spoiler: Which is true; her family was always Miko tasked with keeping the Ninetails under control until her mother snapped.]]

** Do ''not'' harm [[BigBrotherInstinct Yukio]] or [[AlwaysSaveTheGirl Shiemi]] in any way. Or ANY of his [[{{Protectorate}} friends]] for that matter.

* CloudCuckooLander: At times has strange behavior thanks to his NoSocialSkills.

* FlowerInHerHair: After she grows her hair out of its bob she uses flower based hairclips to keep her bangs out of her face. Considering that [[PlantPerson Nii-chan]] spends most of his time [[HeadPet hiding in her hair]] they might count as being a ''sentient'' "flower in her hair" as well.

* BerserkButton: Ryuji cares a lot more for his friends than he cares to admit and is absolutely pissed whenever any of them places undue strain upon themselves [[ThePowerOfFriendship when they have each other to depend upon]]. In the manga, [[FantasticRacism he doesn't care that Rin is Satan's son]], but he's irritated that Rin decided to handle the students' protection on his own. [[spoiler:Ryuji is absolutely ''infuriated'' when he finds out in Chapter 64 that Shima's brothers willingly allowed Shima to join the Illuminati, even if it is for the sake of being True Cross' double agent]].

* {{Foil}}: Turns out to be one for ''Yukio''. Both are [[BookSmart smart]] scholarship students who have terrible tempers and are admired by others while not being as good as they seem at first. While Ryuji is currently doing his best to work through his [[FatalFlaw flaws]] and improve himself Yukio [[spoiler: is refusing to admit to be wrong and is heading on a crash course to disaster.]]

* JerkassRealization: Has this happen ''three times'' before it fully sticks. First during his debut chapter when Rin saves his life from the Leaper, second during Kyoto arc when a "fight" with Rin puts him in the position of being executed, and then finally during Inari [[spoiler: when Renzo throws it into his face how he's been acting rather spoiled this entire time.]]. After the last time, Ryuji has started seriously working on fixing his problems and has started to truly get a handled on his temper.

* BadassPreacher: The head father of his church, and was a former Paladin. Also the only character so far to have been a Meister in ''all five'' exorcist specialities.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: After his introduction he reveaks himself to be pretty tolerant and even understanding of demons and explicitly states his reason for being an exorcist is because he "loves this world".

* DangerouslyGenreSavvy:
** Renzou suggests that the [[spoiler: Illuminati guards]] have a better chance of defeating Rin than [[spoiler: Lucifer]] as Rin would hesitate to kill humans, saying "[[ThePowerOfLove love]] [[LoveIsAWeakness is fragile]]".
** [[spoiler: When Yukio demands to know what side he's on, Renzou flips it back on Yukio with "you know the same could be said to you". This is after Renzou had relayed Lucifer's (second) invitation to join the Illuminati. Yukio doesn't take this well.]]

* BookDumb: Especially when compared to Yukio, since while Yukio is a TeenGenius Rin is a former junior high school drop out. However, it's downplayed compared to other shounen heroes to a more realistic level. He's just not good with bookwork, but he's honestly quite smart outside of it and he's been improving slowly as a later chapter reveals (going from only getting 2% on a test - to be fair was tossed into both normal school and exorcist school at the last minute - to getting 68% in the same course).

* {{Tsundere}}: Type A, right down to the [[GirlishPigtails twintails]] and [[ZettaiRyouiki thighhigh socks]]. As part of her character development, her deredere side comes out more and more often; Generally towards Paku, Shiemi and [[ShipTease Rin]].

Known as Hachitaro of the Sanko, the spirit is a super-high level demon known as a Hydra and the one who initially gave Shura her AncestralWeapon due to a pact made with her ancestor. He's intent on Shura having a child to continue honoring their deal.

* HeroicWillpower: Satan has been trying to possess him for years pre-series. He always failed because Fujimtoto's will was too strong. Unfortunately, losing his temper with his adoptive son (enough to hit him) turned out to be enough of a OhGodWhatHaveIDone moment to give an opening.

* OhGodWhatHaveIDone: Done subtly, almost as a FreezeFrameBonus, as the way he looks at his hand after hitting Rin suggests he immediately regrets and berates himself for it. [[FromBadToWorse Which allows Satan the opening he had been looking for all those years...]]

* HeroicWillpower: Satan has been trying to possess him for years pre-series. He always failed because Fujimtoto's will was too strong.

* RedHeadedHeroine: Bright blood red hair with [[MulticoloredHair Blonde Tips]].

** Ch67 has him doing this to [[spoiler: Yukio]], reducing [[spoiler: him]] to a break down after he's gone with only a few well chosen words.

* BettyAndVeronica: The reliable and gentlemanly Betty to Rin's rebellious and troublesome Veronica for Shiemi's Archie.

* TheCorrupter: He convinced a loyal member of the Kyoto Branch Office to give him the dangerous Right Eye of the Impure King. [[spoiler:He convinced Renzou to betray his family and join the Illuminati.]] He is actively attempting to manipulate Yukio for unknown but definitely unsavory ends.

** Emotionally open (openly [[ManlyTears crying]]), enjoys [[SupremeChef cooking]], honest to a fault and loves ''emotional drama'' in manga.

* DidYouJustScamCthulhu: [[spoiler:Tricks Hachiro into removing Shura's tattoo in Chapter 77, freeing her from the contract, by offering himself after pretending to shoot his brother. The moment Shura is free, Rin fries him. The only snag is that... well, Hachiro heals really quickly and is pissed.]]
