* DidntSeeThatComing: With all of his meticulous planning for ambushing the Survey Corps and despite being warned by Reiner beforehand, he never factored in just how much of a threat Levi truly was. That gross miscalculation led to Zeke being dismembered and almost killed outright, his entire Titan army slaughtered, and being forced to retreat with a horribly injured Reiner and leaving Bertolt behind.

* EatenAlive: Invoked and played with in the anime, but played straight in the manga. In the anime, the Smiling Titan snaps her torso so that she stops squirming before taking a bite out of her, leading to the possibility that she had already died when it devoured her; in the manga, the Titan just bites her in half.

* {{Irony}}: He tried to mold and indoctrinate his firstborn son, Zeke, into his political beliefs only for him to go completely against his wishes and betray him; by contrast he was a more OpenMidedParent with his second son, Eren, never revealing anything about his past or his ideology, and as a result Eren ends up fully embracing his father's main goal by his own volition.

The Eldians (or Elodians) are a nation that originated from Ymir Fritz, the Original/Progenitor Titan. Upon obtaining her Titan powers, Ymir, her Nine Titan Powers and the Eldians sought to aid the human race, ultimately subduing the Kingdom of Marley to form the Empire of Eldia but according to the Marleyans, they started to frown upon other races and initiated a campaign of eugenics-based ethnic cleansing against them that lasted seventeen centuries. Upon losing most of the Titan Powers to Marley, the Eldians and Marleyans fought in the Titan War, which unofficially concluded when the 145th Eldian King (now referred to as the First King) refused to fight and abandoned the continent and some of the Eldians, retreating and settling in the island of Paradi where he built the Three Walls, secluding his people from the outside world.

* AssholeVictim: Invoked. The Marleyans have sent waves upon waves of their Eldian minorities turned into mindless man-eating Titans to hound the peoples of the Three Walls because they argue that the Eldians engaged in a centuries-long ethnic cleansing against them.

* ConditionalPowers: Invoked. The Marleyans have painted the Eldians as the villains in every way that they could do so, even convincing the Eldians from the Ghettos that those who escaped to Paradi just did so in order to avoid their just punishment. The Ghetto Eldians, however, do suspect as to why the Marleyans didn't kill them if they hate them so much. Given the case that ''only the Eldians can wield the Titan Powers'' certainly provides a justification for their survival and why the Marleyans need them, though this is only been implied so far.
** Then there's the "Coordinate" power, since it's known that there are at least two groups of people that are able to resist it (the Ackermans and Asians), it can be assumed that it only works with Eldians.

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Seven of the Nine Titan Powers of the Eldians are now being used against them by the Marleyans. They're also using the people they left behind against them by turning them into mindless Titans sent to hound them in Paradi Island.

* QuestForIdentity: What the Survey Corps and by proxy the people inside the Walls ended up finding in Grisha Yeager's account, though they were actually looking for a way to stop the Titans. The mystery of the barrage of Titans inflicted upon them is directly related to who they are and what happened a century before. Turns out, they are the last remnant of the People of Ymir, the Eldians, and they're being punished for a centuries-long ethnic crime against their enemies, the Marleyans.

*AbusiveParents: Along with Dina, to Zeke. Treating him like some kind of weapon, forcing him into a role he didn't want and even getting physical, and even selling him off to Marley's millitary in order to send him off to a warzone and cruel training while he's still only seven years old.

* CripplingCastration: While being tortured by the Marleyans you can see that apart from [[{{Fingore}} cutting his fingers]], they also ''cut his genitals'' off. Not that this prevented him from fathering Eren thought, thank goodness for Titan regeneration.

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: He enrolled his young son, Zeke, in the Marleyian army in order to use him as TheMole for the Eldian restoration movement, only for him to betray him to the Marleyians.

* HunterOfHisOwnKind: He's not only an Eldian, he's a son of an ''Eldian Queen''; yet, he's dead set on committing full blown Genocide against the Eldian people, calling them "an evil race," conveniently overlooking his own actions and those of his Marleyan "masters."

* ImpliedTrope: ReplacementGoldfish. Zeke's age (mid-20's to early 30's), and the fact that he has been in the ranks of Marley since he was a young boy, suggest that the rest of the Titan Warriors --who are considerably younger-- are just replacements of previous holders of the Titan Powers.

* TheParagonAlwaysRebels: His parents entrusted him with the fate of the Eldian people when they offered him as a recruit of the Marley front. He then ratted his parents to the Marleyans and later became the undisputed leader of the Marley-controlled Titan Shifters in complete and astounding opposition to what his parents expected of him.

* FinaglesLaw: Oh, baby! Absolutely '''everything''' that could have gone wrong for Dina, ''indeed went wrong''. The ContrivedCoincidence of the fact that she [[spoiler:ended up eating Carla and was killed by Eren]] in the end just spells that the universe was out to get her, grabbed her, took her by the ankles and slammed her on the concrete face down. Calling her the poster child of the trope would only invite to even more misery.
