* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:He let's himself be eaten by Eren so he could pass the Coordinate to him.]]

* TheChessmaster: His intelligence is ranked an 11/10, and he proves to be a brilliant tactician able to compete against the likes of Erwin and Armin.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: He is completely put off and baffled when the Survey Corps soldiers just keep charging at him even after he nearly decimated them with his previous attack, to the point where he's so angry that he subconsciously crushes the rocks he's holding.
* EvilCounterpart: Shaping up to be one to Levi. Zeke and Levi are both the leading force and most capable combatants among their groups, and both have stressed relations at best with the people they're leading. Levi and Zeke are both willing to use force to coerce their unwilling soldiers to act, and both are willing to put their enemies through some quite horrific bloodshed to get to their ends. Chapter 83 highlights this, with the final line "An adult's heartless decision will take away the life of a childhood friend", essentially applying equally to Levi and Zeke. They even also seem to be fans of tea! One could almost say they are the same character seen from different points of view.

* ForTheEvulz: Why is he killing the survey corps and the people within the walls? ''For fun!''

* GreyAndGrayMorality: Both his side and the Humanity's side have done some morally dubious things.

* KnowWhenToFoldEm: At the end of chapter 83, when he's facing Levi, Eren, Mikasa, all of whom are rightfully pissed, and his army is gone, through his own actions, save the "mule" Titan he's riding, and unable to go into Titan Form himself, he decides to "call it a draw" and run away, with Reiner in the "mule" Titan's mouth.

* VillainHasAPoint: While he is irrefutably a horrible person who gives people brutal and cruel deaths seemingly because he can, he nonetheless has a point about Grisha messing around with Eren's head, perhaps more than once.

to:

* VillainyFreeVillain[=/=]DesignatedVillain: Even though he's most of the time cold and cruel, [[spoiler: what he actually want is to put an end on the war, so there can be no more suffering.]]

* EasilyForgiven: Played with. Even after all these years, Historia doesn't seem to have as much ill will towards her mother than she actually should, describing her as being very beautiful when explaining her past.

* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His army of Titans forming a semi-circle around the battlefield provided the perfect anchor points for Levi's Maneuvering Gear on open terrain to get within attacking range and take him down while all of his attention was focused on the rest of the Survey Corps.

While Zeke does survive by the skin of his teeth courtesy of the "Mule" Titan, he's forced to retreat much to his chagrin.

* {{Fanservice}}: Probably the one single canon example of fanservice in this series to date. He gets shirtless (for seemingly no reason, as he was wearing one prior to shifting) and unlike every other example, he isn't chained up, bleeding, or missing any limbs. Or his face, for that matter.

* InsaneTrollLogic: His idea of "saving" Eren is kidnapping him and killing or destroying everything and everyone he cares about. Obviously thinking that Eren cares about those people and things only because Grisha Yaeger ''brainwashed him.'' The fact that he threw boulders through his own army right in front of Eren just minutes before never enters his thought process as a reason why Eren might be reluctant.

* TautologicalTemplar: He sees himself and all Titan-kind as "good" so everything he does, or orders be done in his name is perfectly okay, regardless of actual consequences. Everyone who defies him, even if it's non-titan humans simply ''existing'' is an unforgivable evil that must be destroyed, regardless of the cost.

* VillainHasAPoint: While he is correct that Grisha Yeager played with Eren's memories, perhaps more than once, this still doesn't come anywhere near close to justifying his actions to have Eren kidnapped, repeatedly, while simultaneously destroying everything and everyone Eren cares about in the process, starting with Eren's own mother.
