The students of Kunugigaoka Junior High School's Class 3-E are the protagonists of the story. Infamous for containing the third-year students with the lowest grades, Class 3-E was designed to give the rest of the school (students and faculty included) a target for intense discrimination and thus a motive to keep their grades up. To add insult to injury, Class 3-E's students are banned from entering the main campus; their classroom is located in a worn-out hovel on a mountaintop about a kilometer away. This isolation is the ideal place for the top-secret assassination of an alien-like teacher who is threatening to destroy the world.

Despite being part of the class comprised of the school's "worst", each student has a characteristic which defines him/her and becomes his/her weapon. As the series progresses, they become better in assassination, P.E. ''and'' studying.

* AllMenArePerverts: While Okajima is the most blatant example, most of the other boys are not really better. In chapter 88, they start an operation to create the perfect camera-equipped mini-tank (which was originally meant to kill Koro-sensei) to peek under the girls' skirts. [[SeriousBusiness And all of these guys keep totally serious faces and a professional manner]].
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: As a byproduct of a school system that keeps their class in the lowest 5% in order to raise up the other 95% of the school. Of course, this only applies to their grades and popularity, [[BullyingADragon not their ability to kill]].
* AssassinsAreAlwaysBetrayed: The fact that nobody got hurt when [[spoiler:Shiro blew up a pool that most of Class-E was swimming in]] required a good deal of luck. The intention may not have been to hurt them, but it was clearly negligent of their safety.
* BadAss: All the teachers and students when comparing to normal people.
** BadassCrew[=/=]TrueCompanions: It took awhile but the whole class makes up a BadassCrew now. They really care about each other and get along well. If you mess with one of them, the whole class and their teacher(s) will aim for you. Such moments include ganging up against two students for messing with Maehara, and [[spoiler:working together to defeat Class A in the pole match, in order to stop Asano from telling the school that Isogai has been breaking the school rules by having a part-time job.]]
** BadassBookworm: While the whole premise behind the creation of Class-E may imply that the students in it are BookDumb, it's revealed that the students are pretty good at studying, but they're simply not ''good enough'' to achieve the grades that would keep them out of 3E. In the Final Exam arc, [[spoiler:they managed to beat Class-A in number of top spots for individual subjects secured. Together with Class A, they completely monopolized the Top 50.]]
* BerserkButton: When Bitch-sensei calls Class-E the "Misfits of the school" and tells them that studying would be meaningless, she gets pelted with school supplies by the whole class.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Invoked. The students occasionally mention wanting to "tsukkomi" in response to whatever ludicrous situation they've just been presented with.
* BookDumb: It's not that they're dumb or bad at school, they just happened to be the 5% of students who have the lowest grades in an extremely competitive, highly-ranked school, while the other 95% are extremely motivated not to become like them. The other students treat them as dumb people.
** EverybodyHatesMath: Math is the most common weak subject in the class, with eight people listing it as their weak point. There are also other weak subjects. Six people are bad in Japanese, four people in Science, four people in English, three people in social studies, and one person is bad in multiple subjects [[ShoutOut like]] ''Manga/{{Naruto}}''[[note]]The ''Naruto'' person is counted by his own and is not included with the students who are bad in only one particular subject[[/note]]. [[{{Pun}} Doing the math]], one particular student lacks any weak subject, presumably Ritsu, being an AI.
* CharacterTitle: The whole class is part of the Assassination Classroom.
* ChildSoldiers: A variation, in that they're training to be assassins rather than traditional soldiers. Their teachers are trying to ensure they can have a normal life in addition to their training.
* CodeName: Chapter 89 deals with all students having to refer to each other by [[EmbarrassingNickname embarrassing code names]] for the entire day.

* ADayInTheLimelight: Due to the series's LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters issue and the fact that Nagisa, Kayano and Karma tend to get the most focus, the majority of the students don't stand out that much. Though individual students do get [[ADayInTheLimelight focus chapters]] every now and then.
* DemotedToExtra:
** Happens a lot during the Assassination Island arc. First ten students get [[spoiler:poisoned]] and two of the remaining students stay behind to tend to them, leaving a total of 15 students for the infiltration of the Fukuma Palace Hotel. Koro-sensei suffers from DeusExitMachina, sidelining from most of the action. Once inside the hotel, Bitch-sensei splits off from the group to distract the reception guards, and Karasuma-sensei is demoted to being TheLoad due being exposed to an assassin's knockout gas.
*** The ten sick students are Okajima, Mimura, Maehara, Sugino, Hazama, Kurahashi, Nakamura, Hara, Kanzaki and Muramatsu. The two nurse students who stay with them are Okuda and Takebayashi. That means the 15 attack students are Nagisa, Karma, Kayano, Chiba, Hayami, Terasaka, Yoshida, Sugaya, Fuwa, Isogai, Kataoka, Okano, Yada, Kimura and Ritsu.
** The class gets demoted to extra in the middle of the God of Death arc since they are [[spoiler:in distress there]].
* DownplayedTrope: Generally speaking, the students of class E tend to have more subtle characterization that most shounen leads, possessing a few unique traits that stand out strongly. This doesn't mean that their characters are simplistic. Like real people, they merely exhibit various tropes in a way that is weaker than normal in fiction.
* FantasticallyIndifferent: After you've been drafted to assassinate a mach 20-moving, super-teaching eldritch smiley, your surprise may become somewhat miscalibrated. For example, after seeing someone casually walk straight through a wall, you may think "[[ThereWasADoor Use the damn door!]]" instead of "How did he do that!?"
** Well, in this case, they ''expected'' an eccentric transfer student after they heard what Ritsu, the other "eccentric" transfer student, told them.
* InformedFlaw: Class-E is supposedly composed of the high school's worst students, but plenty of them seem reasonably intelligent.
** In later chapters, it's revealed that they're the lower 5% of a school that is one of the most prestigious in the country. Their Class-E status is due to them being smart enough pass, but not enough to excel. Moreover, it's shown that some of the students are extremely skilled in some subjects, but very weak in others (Okuda is very skilled in both math and science, but has failing grades in Japanese).
** Then, there are students like Karma and Isogai, who were placed in Class-E as a disciplinary action. And it's revealed that at least three students (Kataoka, Hayami and Chiba) were victims of TakingAdvantageOfGenerosity, which caused their grades to dramatically slip.
** On top of that, later chapters show that the teaching methods used by the instructors in the main building are geared towards students who are able to learn via memorization and note-taking, while ignoring any other of the veritable cornucopia of learning styles that exist. Koro-sensei, who is willing to tailor his teaching methods to capitalize on various students' strengths, weaknesses, and interests, gets far better results (being able to do everything at Mach 20 tends to help).
* LastNameBasis: Everyone is called by their last names, with the exception of Nagisa, Karma, Ritsu and Itona.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: At the beginning of the series, we have 26 students and their homeroom teacher. Later on, two new teachers and two new transfer students join them. Because of this, it's really hard to focus on one of them for a period of time, and even some of the characters like Karma who gets more screentime than others don't appear frequently.
* MuggingTheMonster:
** Whenever one of the regular students try to bully someone from Class E it never ends well for them. They're lucky if they only end up fleeing in fear for their lives.
** Not just fellow students at the school. Do not try picking on the seemingly "weak" tourists simply because you're bored delinquents out to have a bit of fun.
* MundaneUtility: Their assassination skills are very useful in the matsuri games.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous[=/=]ShoutOutThemeNaming: Most of the students are named after the titular [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/47_ronin Forty-seven Ronin]]. However, many of the characters have altered names, either in how they are read or what kanji are used to write them. This may be a further reference to the oldest fictional versions of the story, which were written in a time when plays depicting current events were censored. To avoid that, the plays based on the story used different names and a different time period.
* NightmareFace: Sometimes, the students mimic Koro-sensei's regular face whenever he and they have a "sinister" plan.
* {{Ninja}}: Thanks to their training, they possess ninja-like sneaking techniques like "Nanba" and can climb up sheer cliffs with ease.
* NoPronunciationGuide: Many characters had the kanji for their names released without the correct reading specified for a long while. As of the fifth volume all readings are confirmed, but some websites still list them by the translator's early guesses.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: The students come to this decision after [[spoiler:Itona almost kills Koro-sensei]], as they feel it's not "right" for a stranger to be allowed to kill their teacher.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits
* ShipperOnDeck: ''Everyone in the class'' for Karasuma-sensei and Bitch-sensei.
* ShipTease: Some of the interactions between the students can be seen as this. This becomes more clear with [[ShipperOnDeck Koro-sensei's "Couple Setup" plan]], who pairs them (and the other teachers) in boy-girl groups in a test of courage, based on their interactions. Theknown pseudo couples are:
** Nagisa/Kayano: They interact with each other the most and Kayano is implied to have feelings for him.
** Karma/Okuda: Karma has openly stated that he is attracted to her, mostly because of her talents in making medicines, poisons and other chemical concoctions.
** Sugino/Kanzaki: It is known that Sugino has a crush on Kanzaki though his plans to impress her tend to fail.
** Chiba/Hayami: They are the best marksmen and appear together most of the time, especially in the Assassination Island arc. They also celebrate their victory against Gastro by crossing their arms together.
** Sugaya/Nakamura: It is not known why Koro-sensei paired them.
** Maehara/Okano: Okano gives him her towel when he was dumped by Tsuchiya and kicked by Seo. [[spoiler:Also very strongly hinted at in a series of SCRAP puzzles released in volumes 5-8.]]
** Okajima/Kurahashi: Also unknown, but both have ADayInTheLimelight in the same chapter.
** The delinquent group of [[ThreesomeSubtext Terasaka, Muramatsu and Hazama]].
** Karasuma-sensei/Bitch-sensei: The only adults besides Koro-sensei. Notable for having to largest amount of ''actual'' subtext between them. This becomes so obvious, that the [[ShipperOnDeck whole class starts to make a plan to help Bitch-sensei confess]].
* SlobsVersusSnobs: The slobs to Class 3-A's snobs.
* SpotlightStealingSquad:
** Nagisa, Kayano and Karma are the students who get more panels/screentime and appear in promotional materials much more often than their classmates -- the three are occasionally accompanied by Sugino and Okuda. However, Nagisa and especially Kayano don't stand out that much when someone else gets the focus, and Karma disappears from time to time. The author gives every student ADayInTheLimelight, but at least one of the three will appear in a prominent way.
** Both, Karasuma and Irina, become this in the middle of the God of Death arc.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Anyone who isn't Korosensei is off-limits to them, and they don't seem to mind.
* TookALevelInBadass: As a result of the assassination training they have to undergo, ''all'' the students have taken ''some'' levels in badass. And they won't stop.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: They are tasked with the mission to kill their own teacher and instead of displaying fear or hesitance, they show a great enthusiasm in planning how to kill him. Even more disturbing in that even after they've bonded with said teacher and developed affection for him, it didn't slow them down a bit. Granted, the fact that their target is not human may be a factor in this behavior, but still, as Karasuma had said, this is not normal:

The homeroom teacher for class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Junior High School, and the main {{antihero}} of Assassination Classroom. He is responsible for carving out a large chunk of the moon to make it a permanent crescent moon, and plans to destroy the earth after teaching class 3-E for a year.

* AffablyEvil: For a man (for a given value of "man") who wants to destroy the world, Koro-sensei doesn't act like it.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: In chapter 95, [[spoiler:he slaps the entire class after the students injured an old man when they were running and jumping from roof to roof. Karasuma does not report his action and pretends that nothing happened]].
* {{Badass}}: Pretty much the most badass character in the series.
** BadassTeacher: An extremely competent and overprotective teacher, who uses his inhuman abilities to teach and protect them. As noted under BerserkButton, trying to harm his students is an unwise move.
** SubmissiveBadass: Played for laughs. One of his weaknesses is that he is subservient to his superiors, and whenever Karasuma orders him to go away, he meekly and mopingly obeys.
* BashBrothers: Together with Karasuma-sensei in the tag game.

* BizarreAlienBiology: Yes. Well, ish. He's born on Earth, he just doesn't look like it. From his [[ColorCodedForYourConvenience color-changing face]] to his [[SwissArmyAppendage multi-purpose tentacles]], with more quirks being revealed over time.
* BlitheSpirit: For a creature who intends to destroy the world, Koro-sensei is an expert in making people change their ways for the better. Karma, Irina and "Red Eye" are all examples of this charisma and wisdom Koro-sensei possesses, along with his interactions with all of Class-E.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Moon-killing, manga-drawing, supersonic, perverted, but really good teacher, anybody?
* TheChessmaster: He's an extremely skilled strategist. For example, the tag game ''Robbers and Cops'' which he plays together with the class and Karasuma-sensei. He and Karasuma-sensei are the cops and have to tag the class within an hour, but Koro-sensei has the given handicap to be in "jail" until the last minute. The students underestimate Karasuma-sensei's extreme skills, and they realize that Koro-sensei's handicap is even his advantage, since nobody can tag out the "arrested" students as long he's in the "jail". Except that Koro-sensei is someone very easily to trick.
** Except, even then things are still going according to his plan as he's providing helpful advice to the students on how to better evade Karasuma when they get out, which implies that he might have been falling for their tricks intentionally in order to give them more opportunities to gain experience and put his advice into action.
* ChivalrousPervert: He doesn't hide the fact that he loves women with big boobs, but he also defends Irina from a group of perverts who were harassing her and is an all around good person--aside from that destroying the world issue.
* ClarkKenting: When he wants to go out in public, he sticks a fake nose on his face and puts on a wig. Amazingly, it works.
* ColorCodedEmotions: Physically so. Since Koro-sensei is almost always smiling, his emotions are read by his face's coloration and color pattern.
** Yellow[=/=]Green: Normal
** Yellow with blushing cheeks: Very happy (Usually, but not always, due to breasts)
** Green and yellow stripes: Mocking contempt
** Dark purple with X shape: Wrong answer face
** Orange with circle shape: Correct answer face (Two circles for perfect scores)
** Light blue: Sadness
** Dark blue: Shock[=/=]fear
** Red-orange: Angry
** Pitch black: Extremely angry
** Pink: Drowsy/relaxed
** White: Poker face[=/=]bewildered
* CombatTentacles: Comes with being octopoidally-shaped.
* CrazyPrepared: Dear Lord, but is he? The [[{{Doorstopper}} guidebooks]] he produces are just one (big) example.
* DefaceOfTheMoon: Blew most of it up prior to the story's beginning.
* DramaPreservingHandicap: He isn't allowed to injure any of the students or staff, according to the agreement he made to be allowed to teach class 3-E. Never mind the human students, even [[spoiler: Itona]] wouldn't stand a chance against him if he were willing and able to retaliate.
* EldritchAbomination: Averted. Even though Koro-sensei looks like a freaky alien octopus, he states that he was born and raised on earth. As what, human, animal, vegetable, or mineral, is anyone's guess.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Koro-sensei is not pleased when one of his students' collaborative attempt at killing him almost injures one of their own.
* ExcuseMeWhileIMultitask: When people try to kill Koro-sensei he's usually doing other things, such as meticulously trimming his attackers' eyebrows or giving a fighter jet a polish in mid-air
** SelfDuplication: He can move so fast he can make selectively tangible afterimages. Chapter 12 shows him making one for every student in the class to personally focus on their weak subjects. He even leaves one outside to rest from all that work.
* ExplainingYourPowersToTheEnemy: Subverted. When he bothers to say anything at all, he only tells the basics, and often leaves out key details, like the fact that his mucus protects him from his weakness to water.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Aside from his habit of flying around the world to eat any food he wants, he has been seen eating pens, knives, sodium hydroxide, aqua regia, plastic explosives...
* FlashStep: Koro-Sensei has a top speed of Mach 20. During one assassination attempt, he easily dodged the attacker while meticulously trimming his attacker's eyebrows. When attacked by state of the art fighter jets, he gave them a mid-air waxing. When attacked by knife armed students, he disarmed all of them, then replaced the knives with tulips without their noticing.
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: Debatable, but the first chapter makes it clear that his current appearance is not his true form. Surprisingly, sans tentacles, his shadowy true form seems human-like.
* FriendlyEnemy: To his students and his co-workers.
* GadgeteerGenius: Has extensive skill and knowledge with machines and electronics. He was able to [[spoiler: majorly upgrade Ritsu's capabilities for a relatively cheap sum of money]] and also built a custom motorcycle with a frame made of wood.
* GameFace: Pitch Black: Extreme Anger.
* GeniusBruiser: Impossible to defeat in single combat, and teaches every single subject at once without being challenged in any way,
* GoneHorriblyWrong: A super-powerful artificial creature, created to be the world's savior, now on course to destroy it in less than a year.
* GuileHero: For all his power, he almost always solves problems with trickery rather than brute force alone, often to the effect of bettering his opponents.
* HealingFactor: Koro-Sensei, amongst other abilities, has the power of regeneration. Even if he gets hit with the Applied Phlebotinum weapons, unless his body is almost completely destroyed, he'll recover in seconds.
* HelpingWouldBeKillStealing: Though he may guide and coordinate them, he lets his students handle problems on their own whenever they're capable of it, which they usually are.
* HiroshimaAsAUnitOfMeasure: Every few chapters Koro-sensei is given a character introduction that includes one of these comparing to his ability to travel at mach 20. Some are fairly sensible ([[LudicrousPrecision 651.241]] times Usain Bolt's 100 meter dash speed) while others are ridiculous (133,333.33 times faster than the speed of falling sakura petals).
* IllKillYou: Koro-sensei threatens to kill the families of Class-E if any of them endanger one another during an assassination attempt, and to kill the entire class if they don't pass a test with flying colors. The latter turned out to be a bluff, and probably the former too.
* InformedAttribute: He is an evil monster who intends to destroy the world, and only hasn't done so yet because it would be boring... Or so the narrative tells us. He actually acts in a way that has been compared to Buddha on this site, helping everyone around him improve themselves. The dissonance is so extreme it's hard to imagine that it's not {{Foreshadowing}} some kind of reveal.
* {{Irony}}: He is frequently described and compared with an octopus, but [[spoiler:he cannot swim]].
* {{Invisibility}}: A rarely used ability, and his clothes and anything he's carrying will still be visible. It's not explained exactly what he's doing, but it seems that he just makes himself transparent.
* InvoluntaryShapeshifter: Koro-sensei transformed several times after drinking hazardous chemicals.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Koro-sensei, who will destroy the world, but also ensure that his students get good grades and become successful.
** Though, the jerk part is doubtful since he never really acts as a jerk.
* [[KaleidoscopeEyes Kaleidoscope Face]]: See ColorCodedEmotions above.
* KiAttack: Shown in chapter 84. [[spoiler:What's interesting is that ''he initially didn't know he could do that''; he learned it during the Island arc]].
* KryptoniteFactor: A rubbery material that is not described beyond being "special" and able to disrupt his cells on contact. It can be fashioned into knives, BB pellets, or clothes, and is apparently available in abundance.
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: He casually blows or slices off his own tentacles, sometimes several at once. Supposedly this causes emotional disturbance that slows him down for a while afterwards, but that's still way less of a response than such injuries warrant. Of course, he can regrow his tentacles after a few seconds.
* TheMatchmaker: A chapter has Koro-sensei pairing up the students into boy/girl pairs of his choosing to explore a cave in a poor attempt to cause some romantic tension between them. He even refers to the scheme as ''Couple Setup.'' Somewhat subverted in that he doesn't actually want them to get together as much as he wants juicy romantic gossip that he could poke fun at them for and write a novel about later.

* AintTooProudToBeg: When [[spoiler: Takaoka]] forces him to ask for forgiveness [[PoseOfSupplication on his knees]] to get the antidote for his friends he inmediately complies.
* AmbiguousDisorder: There is ''something'' off about him.
** He isn't intimidated by having to wield a potentially deadly weapon or having to threaten someone's life, even though it's specifically pointed out that he should be. Yet he isn't generally callous or manipulative in the way a sociopath would be. He just has no compunction against killing for some reason, like you'd expect of a veteran hitman. Except he isn't one, yet.
*** He is supposed to be intimidated by the thought of using a real knife, but not only does he show no hesitation, he is clear-minded enough to attack using the dull side of the blade.
** His interactions with Karma in the early chapters are also not quite ordinary. Most people would be rather disturbed by Karma's AxCrazy passion of killing his teacher, but Nagisa remained calm the whole time, he didn't comment on Karma's ideas and he didn't show any reaction to Karma's crazy attitude. Nagisa's facial expression was telling like neutral wondering whether Karma would succeed or not. In short, Nagisa just acted like a neutral observer.
