History Characters / Archipelago

A former slave aboard Captain Snow's submarine. She managed to escape and washed ashore Ruin Island, where the Burillas adopted her. She works as a waitress in their inn, until she meets Blitz and gets thrown into the quest to keep the [[TheBigBad Raven]] from being revived.

She becomes the unofficial leader in [[GottaCatchThemAll the search for the heirs]], having a vaguely defined connection to Dragonfly and all the charisma necessary to keep the team together. Internally however she's prone to self-loathing, feeling responsible for many of the terrible things that she's seen throughout her life, notably supposedly abandoning her only friend Uru aboard Snow's sub.

Credenza's determined helpfulness earns her Blitz's UndyingLoyalty and Raven's (albeit initially begrudging) respect. * TheHero: She sort of stumbles into saving the world quest by rescuing a random shipwrecked guy.

* MagneticHero: As Snow notes, Credenza effortlessly gains the loyalty and friendship of others, which makes her very dangerous.
** Book 10 makes this abundantly clear once TheCavalry arrives.
* TheMcCoy: Not to the stupid levels, but she genuinely believes in her fellow man. Except captain Snow.

** While interrogating Knull in book two, she goes nuts at the suggestion that Snow is alive. Unfortunately, Knull is telling the truth.

* StrongFamilyResemblance: She looks a lot like her parents. Some speculate that [[spoiler:Dragonfly and/or Olivia]] counts as well.

* TrueCompanions: She has a knack for collecting friends.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The tomboy to Alice's girly.

A young man with one eye and amnesia ([[DemonicPossession among other problems]]) who washed ashore Ruin Island. Initially untamed and untrusting, he eventually calmed down after Credenza befriended him and gave him a name. She quickly discovers that Blitz's amnesia is the result of a fudged possession attempt by an evil Raven spirit. [[spoiler: His former self stabbed his eye to stop the Raven from taking control of his body, resulting in his mind being split in two; childish wild Blitz, and cold calculating Raven. Blitz and Raven would eventually become separated, but the damage done to his mind remained.]]

* AMindIsATerribleThingToRead: Blitz's childish demeanor and mood-swinging tendencies apparently do not make for a pleasant mental landscape. [[http://archipelagocomic.com/comic/?id=778 Vaniji Ralo finds out the hard way.]]
** Raven then Lampshades how dangerous Blitz's mind can be. And he would know, since he's the raven who broke said mind, or rather the raven who got broken by it. The breaking was mutual. And the shards are still there, Blitz just isn't conscious of them, which means his mind is a terrible thing to read.
* AmnesiacDissonance: Spelled out in chapter one - he used to be cold and distant during his time on Sin's sub, in stark contrast to the childish happy-go-lucky idiot Credenza finds. This is caused by the LossOfIdentity problem - Anthony, the original brooding loner, simply isn't there anymore.
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: See his character quote? He says variations on that a lot. Credenza even has to make sure he doesn't accidentally steal anything he takes a fancy to.
* BewareTheNiceOnes / BewareTheSillyOnes: Make no mistake, you hurt one of Blitz's friends, and you will regret it. If you live long enough.
* CloudCuckooLander: In case the page quote wasn't enough to go off of. He is prone to drawing childish scribbles on windows after breathing on them, playing pretend, and getting lost in his pursuits of something shiny.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He is quite capable in a fight when things get desperate. At first he would trade places with [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Raven]] most of the time, but he doesn't need him for everything.

* HiddenDepths: Blitz may be a brain-damaged idiot, but his innocence lends itself well to looking after others, and his love for Credenza is more than blind loyalty. See {{Foreshadowing}} entry on the main page. He also tends to use quite sophisticated language, left over from Anthony. Of course, he follows it with BuffySpeak like:

* HeroicWillpower: He can actually resist Raven. It's not easy, but he can.
* LossOfIdentity: Zigzagged. Being possessed by a lurker raven would've ensured his original mind taking a backseat forever. This never happened, but the original owner of the body is still long gone. The original person, Anthony, was much, much more like ''Raven'' in personality. That is [[ByronicHero brooding and rather smart]].
* [[spoiler: TheLostLenore: Chesska, Anthony's wife who died after giving birth to their child. He broke down completely after that. It took him a couple of years to get his act together, upon which the financial problems he already had got so dire Anthony needed to go to the sea and earn money. And then he got framed for a murder his captain commited, was marooned, possessed by a raven, but changed his mind and ''stabbed the eye out'', effectively killing himself, creating the person later named Blitz and starting Raven's HumanityEnsues.]]

A Raven spirit, one of many. Originally his mission was to inhabit the minds of normal people and influence them into awakening the Great Raven trapped beneath the Archipelago. Unfortunately his last attempt didn't go so well, and he became one of two personalities inhabiting Blitz's body. Originally an enemy bent on killing Credenza, he joined her side after the other Ravens turned on him, seeing him as useless in his current state.

A perpetually confused individual, since his unique circumstances make him vulnerable to emotions and feelings outside of his programming as a spirit. Raven tends to exert his frustrations by being grumpy. He becomes very protective of Blitz in a brotherly way. [[spoiler: After eventually separating from Blitz, he would begin to develop his own physical body.]]

* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: One of the first signs of his developing love for Credenza - he's willing to grind their expedition to the underworld to a complete halt just to make sure she's okay.

* BlueOniRedOni: Despite his flares of temper, he is the voice of a slightly cynical reason to Credenza's [[TheMcCoy idealist]].
* [[spoiler:BroughtDownToBadass: Eventually, he gains a human body, but loses his raven magic, aside from his wings. He is still a reliable asset as a fighter.]]

* TheComicallySerious: On occasion. Mostly because he has no idea how humans work, really.

* TheCynic: Miserable and snarky pessimist. He gradually grows out of it.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: He undergoes the most CharacterDevelopment of the main characters, and it has the most impact on the plot. [[spoiler: During the final battle, he leads the attack on Snow's physical form during Credenza's BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind with Snow.]]

* FakeDefector: During the events of chapter nine, he willingly turns himself in to the Great Raven's army to ransom for Credenza. He gives a pretty convincing speech about [[spoiler:the futility of his attempts to be human]], and just when it seems like he's ready to give everyone else up so Credenza can live... he changes his mind at the last moment. [[spoiler:Cue dragonfire on the army.]]

* GoodAngelBadAngel: He appears as a winged apparition over Blitz's shoulder when not in control, and Blitz would do likewise. [[spoiler: Stops doing this after they separated, clearly.]]
* TheHeartless: Originally, he was created with a broken heart, only capable of one emotion - hate. After the heart gets mended and he grows a soul, it still takes him a while to learn other emotions.
* HeelFaceTurn: When Snow and the other Ravens turn on him in chapter two, he vows vengeance out of spite. He eventually becomes attached to Credenza and the others and develops more selfless reasons for fighting against Snow.
* HomeSweetHome: [[http://thesilvertophat.deviantart.com/art/Arch-5-pg-119-91619702 Here]], stopped thanks to a ShutUpKiss from [[LoveInterest Credenza]].
* HumanityEnsues: Early on, his broken raven heart is fixed by Credenza, giving him a human soul. [[spoiler: Later, he gets a (mostly) human body to go with it.]]
* HumanityIsInfectious: Credenza mending his heart with the Soul Key and his extended time interacting with people instead of controlling them triggers a change in him. He starts behaving more like a person and begins to develop emotions. Its all but stated that his original host was the template for the new personality. [[spoiler:Cassie points out that the curls his fingers when's he's afraid just like Anthony used to.]]
* KnightInSourArmour: He has a tendency to moan and complain along the way, but ultimately he'll be doing good.
* TheLancer: Credenza's closest ally and a direct contrast to her.
** [[MistreatmentInducedBetrayal Help Face Turn]]: Credenza helping Blitz (and him by extension) is what sets off his transition. Plus, Snow trying to kill him for becoming independent sure didn't help.
** MookFaceTurn: Was just another raven spirit before his accident with Blitz and subsequent siding with Credenza. Adding to this, WordOfGod stated that Raven ranked ''really'' low compared to his fellow raven spirits - being nothing more than an intelligent mind-probe.
* [[spoiler:LotusEaterMachine: Towards the climax of the final encounter with Snow, everyone gets trapped in their own dreams. Raven's show him in a mundane but blissful domestic life together with Credenza. He's the only one unaware of this being a dream and indeed thinks their adventures were one.]]
* LuminescentBlush: Ends up having quite of few of these, courtesy of Credenza teasing him.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Once he develops the conscience to back it up, he is very remorseful for what he did to Blitz.

* SelfSacrificeScheme: He wants to avoid realizing [[spoiler: Dragonfly's]] [[PropheticFallacy not so clear]] but [[SadisticChoice clearly unpleasant]] prophecy this way. During chapter nine he becomes a borderline DeathSeeker. Credenza doesn't approve.

* WhatIsThisFeeling: Having never felt emotion for most of his existence, he isn't sure how to handle them. Doubly so when he falls in love.

The [=AI=] of an old ship [[spoiler: buried underneath Anthony's castle.]] He befriends Clair, but never shows himself to the adults of the household.

A half were-shark from Quillotia. Despite growing up relatively sheltered from the world (and his home island's FantasticRacism towards Sharks), Tuff always had the stigma from his parents' MalignedMixedMarriage looming over him. His parent's disappearances finally spurred him to run away from home. [[spoioler: He also stole Mikel's sub. But Mikel forgives him during the story.]] He intended to go alone, but Riley followed him. The two lived a nomadic lifestyle for eight years before meeting Credenza and getting caught up in the search for the Heirs.

* CannotSpitItOut: Was pretty smitten with Credenza during the first couple chapters, but never brought attention to it and it fizzled out. Once he starts falling for Cassie, the problem re-emerges.

* BigBad: Though he's technically DragonInChief to the Raven, Snow is the real villain, especially after we learn the Raven has no power in the real world.

* TheDreaded: A name to conjure with. Everyone fears him, for good reason.

* FauxAffablyEvil: He tries, but his OmnicidalManiac tendencies tend to get in the way.
* GracefulLoser: Snow tends to take defeats and setbacks in stride (being immortal probably helps). [[spoiler:He even laughs when he's finally killed for good, and his final act is to offer his mechanical arm to save Blitz.]]

* TheHeavy
* LaughingMad: Pretty much constantly, but probably the biggest example is [[spoiler: [[http://www.archipelagocomic.com/comic/?id=796 when he gets stabbed through the heart with a toy sword.]] ]]

* PapaWolf: He's willing to do anything to protect his [[spoiler:wife and daughter]] even supposedly willing to backstab the Raven.

** [[spoiler:He doesn't kill Knull despite the later's TheDogBitesBack attempt, even ordering some ravens to take care of him. And remember, this isn't like the past times he's spared Knull because his AntiMagic made him useful, Knull literally tried to kill him, and Snow still spared him!]]
** [[spoiler:There is no discernible reason why Snow would give Blitz Dragonfly's arm, especially because Snow was the whole reason Blitz was dying in the first place!]]

* SharpDressedMan: Takes pride in his wardrobe. When [[spoiler:his leg is crushed and replaced with a robotic limb]], his biggest lament is that his boots don't fit properly.

* {{Foil}}: Somewhat of one to Raven; by joining the Raven, [[FridgeBrilliance she lost what he gained by leaving]].

* EvilCounterpart: To Tuff. Both are Readers of the Listing of Names, and she hates him for 'stealing' the book from her. Doesn't quite overlap into Rival territory though as they rarely engage in combat.

* TeamMom: Especially towards Blitz.

* AMindIsATerribleThingToRead: Blitz's childish demeanor and moodswing tendencies apparently do not make for a pleasant mental landscape. [[http://archipelagocomic.com/comic/?id=778 Vaniji Ralo finds out the hard way.]]
** Raven then Lampshades how dangerous Blitz's mind can be. And he would know, since he's the raven who broke said mind, or rather the raven who got broken by it. The breaking was mutual. And the shards are still there, Blitz just isn't conscious of them.

* BewareTheNiceOnes / BewareTheSillyOnes: Make no mistake, you hurt one of Blitz's friends, and he will make you regret it.

He's a perpetually confused individual. His unique circumstances make him vulnerable to emotions and feelings outside of his programming as a spirit. He tends to exert his frustrations by being grumpy. He becomes very protective of Blitz and becomes something of a big brother to him. [[spoiler: After eventually separating from Blitz, he would begin to develop his own physical body.]]

* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Is willing to grind their expedition to the underworld to a complete halt just to make sure Credenza's okay.

* TheCynic: At first, everything just seemed to be miserable for him.

* SuperpoweredEvilSide: At first, he would take control of Blitz at inopportune times to cause trouble. Once he starts working together with Credenza, it becomes more amicable.
* WhatIsThisFeeling: Having never felt emotion for most of his existence, he isn't sure how to handle them.

A half were-shark from Quillotia. Despite growing up relatively sheltered from the world (and his home's FantasticRacism towards Sharks), Tuff always had the stigma from his Parent's strange union looming over him. His parent's disappearances finally spurred him to run away from home. He intended to go alone, But Riley followed after him. The two lived a nomadic lifestyle for eight years before meeting Credenza and getting caught up in the search for the Heirs.

Serves as a foil to his loud and aggressive brother, and is much more careful in almost everything he does (which sometimes comes back to bite him). After he acquires the Listing of Names he becomes something of TheSmartGuy in the team, being the most tactically inclined and leading the way to the heirs using the Book. [[spoiler: Upgrades to GeniusBruiser after gaining the ability to transform into a full wereshark.]]

* CannotSpitItOut: Was pretty smitten with Credenza during the first couple chapters, but never brought attention to it. Once he starts falling for Cassie, the problem re-emerges.

** LoveAtFirstPunch His first interaction with Cassie was a sharp kick in the jaw from her to his wereshark form.

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler: reacts badly to having killed some of the ravens the first time he turns into a wereshark, even if they were the bad guys.]]

* RedOniBlueOni: Blue to Riley's red, being much calmer and the voice of reason leashing his brother down. He claims it's given him ulcers.
