He's so despised by the citizens of Wartwood that, when the election for mayor occurs in "Hop Popular", [[spoiler:literally every single person in Wartwood votes for Hopadiah. Unfortunately, Toadstool still wins because Hop Pop didn't know the rest of the valley got a vote and didn't campaign outside of town.]] Although this changes in the second season, after Toadstool's CharacterDevelopment.
* AmbiguouslyGay: The show never explicitly states anything but he and Toadie act less as just servant and mayor and more as a sort of married couple despite his mistreatment of him. * BadBoss: He pushes Toadie around on a regular basis, making him do lots of work and even using him as a footstool. That being said, some later episodes, such as "Snow Day", show that he [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold actually]] ''[[JerkWithAHeartOfGold does]]'' [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold care about him]].

* BeardOfEvil: He has a small green tuft of beard on his chin, and he's at least sleazy and corrupt.

* CharacterDevelopment: By Season 2, it's shown that he's come to genuinely care about Wartwood and its citizens to the point of being attached, with "Toad to Redemption" showing he's very reluctant to leave the town despite Toad Tower being his dream job, and even uncharacteristically decides to fix pot holes in the town instead of embezzle the funds for a personal jacuzzi. The end of the episode highlights this by revealing [[spoiler:Jacinda considers Toadstool too soft for the job of running Toad Tower, and ends up hiring Bog instead]].
* CorruptHick: He certainly gives off this vibe due to his corrupt mayoral hold over the backwoods town of Wartwood combined with his thick Southern accent.

* DeepSouth: He has a southern accent.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He's already more of a {{Jerkass}} than a true villain, but "Snow Day" shows that he truly cares for Toadie (despite his earlier [[BadBoss abusive behavior]] towards him), saying an emotional "possible goodbye" to him.
* FantasticRacism: He's a toad who looks down on frogs, insulted that he even has to compete for mayor against Hop Pop, and saying that a frog winning the vote over a toad would make headlines.

For how greedy he is, he's far less of a threat than Grime and does his best to keep his citizens from being crushed by rubble in Reunion. He has the capacity to be good, it's just really, [[HeroWithAnFInGood really]] deep down in there. Clearly, he's in denial that he is starting to care about them.
* LargeAndInCharge: As he is a toad, he's taller and bulkier than any other of Wartwood's citizens, roughly the same height as Anne.

* MayorPain: At first he just seems like a standard jerk who just happens to be mayor of Wartwood, but over time it's revealed he's corrupt, embezzling money from the town to fund his own re-election, and [[spoiler:sending Toad Tower guards after innocent citizens to cover up his deeds.]]
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: Most of the other toads seen so far are [[ProudWarriorRace fit martial-minded warriors]] but Toadstool is an overweight politician who isn't much of a fighter, but he can still play sports.

* ButtMonkey: Gets abused quite a bit by Mayor Toadstool--being used as a footstool, getting inadvertently punched, heck, even ''Sprig'' pushes him to the ground [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness when he goes bad cop]] in "[[Recap/AmphibiaS1E25CroakAndPunishment Croak & Punishment]]".

* ExtremeDoormat: Toadie stopped having original opinions a long time ago, and he is just content with doing whatever Toadstool tells him to.
* {{Foil}}: In "Battle of the Bands", he becomes one to ''Sasha'' of all people, his YesMan contrasting against her ControlFreak. He ends up giving her some advice about accepting that people don't always want her help, and she sometimes has to accept that they'd rather do it themselves.

* ObfuscatingInsanity: He acts like a complete loon most of the time; not because he is one, but because he gets a kick out of the reaction.
* OnePersonBirthdayParty: Has to celebrate his birthday alone every year due to it landing on the same day as the Blue Moon Shut-In.

* AmbiguousDisorder: While not to Marcy's extent, Maddie displays a few autistic traits. She has an almost single-minded focus on an unusual interest--magic--and seems to view it as SeriousBusiness, which leads to her holding herself and other mages to a high moral standard. Part of the reason for her CreepyGood demeanor is poor social skills, she can be a little too blunt at times, she has been known to get absorbed in her magic to the point of unintentionally neglecting her sisters, and she can get particularly irritable when someone interferes with her plans.

* BerserkButton: For her, it's reckless usage of Dark Magic for petty reasons.

* CoolBigSis: She used to be like this with her younger sisters although they grew apart over time. At the end of "Maddie & Marcy" she promises to be this again.

* CreepyLonerGirl: Has a somewhat disheveled look, and her mannerism tends to drive people away. Except for Marcy, who's interest in magic lead to her becoming Maddie's apprentice.

In "Cursed!", Sprig is forced to come to terms with the fact that he's been judging her without ever actually getting to know her. This becomes an EnforcedTrope from her debut episode onward, which have her saying more than once about how such magic should only be done by someone who is careful and trained.
