* DaChief: He's not called Nick ''FURY'' for nothing, as his patience can wear thin as his challenges mount. For instance, his answer for when Black Widow asked why Agent Sitwell couldn't be sent to tail the Hulk instead? "'''BECAUSE I GOT A GODDAMN ALIEN OBJECT IN NEW MEXICO, THAT'S WHY!'''"
-->'''Fury''': (''To Tony Stark'') You have become a problem, a problem '''I''' have to deal with. Contrary to your belief, you are not the center of my universe. I have bigger problems in the southwest region to deal with!

An agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Nick Fury's right-hand-man. He was first introduced trying to debrief Stark of his captivity by the Ten Rings, and later assisting him in pursuing the Iron Monger and curing his poisoning. Some time later, he was assigned to excavating Mjolnir, and bumped heads with Thor and his new human companions. Those efforts paid off in recruiting the Norse god to the Avengers, and he remained a major figure in escorting the heroes.

His action figure includes a regular pistol, and he\'s seen firing it in Iron Man, so the instance with the robbers was probably just mercy.

* DoesNotLikeGuns: [[ZigZaggingTrope Zig-Zagged]]. On one hand he willing handed over his gun to two armed robbers before suddenly beating them in hand-to-hand combat. On the other hand, he wielded a BFG to use against Loki. Maybe because Loki is tougher than your average robber.

During the events of Loki's raid on the [[AirBorneAircraftCarrier Helicarrier]], Coulson was mortally wounded in an attempt to attack him. He was reported as dead to
campaigner for the Avengers and most Initiative. He comes to each of S.H.I.E.L.D., who promised to honor his memory and stop Loki for him. However, only the highest in S.H.I.E.L.D. knew that Coulson had actually survived, and soon after he was given in a new job heroes one by one, urging them to join SHIELD in assembling a team to investigate strange events protect the world from its approaching threats. Despite being personally involved in recruiting them, though, he's a busy man and rogue supers around has many urgent responsibilities to juggle, ''including'' dealing with his superiors, the world.World Security Council. Consequently, he can't always be trusted, though he can be counted on to do what he feels is right.
-----
* AntiHero: [[GoodIsNotNice Type III]]. He's a practical, levelheaded man who's ultimately fighting for the good side, but he's also a [[TheChessmaster pragmatic manipulator]] and [[GuileHero isn't above deceiving]] [[ManipulativeBastard or lying to The Avengers]] to achieve his goals, [[spoiler:such as when the team discovers that he was keeping secrets about using the Tesseract to develop weapons of mass destruction. Even Rogers became appalled with him.]] He's a good guy, but one doesn't become the world's greatest spy without learning to play the angles.
* {{Badass}}: As we see in ''The Avengers''.
** BadassNormal: Gods, aliens, a man with "breathtaking anger management issues"... all nothing he can't handle.
** BadassBeard
** BadassInCharge: Of [[SuperTeam the Avengers Initiative]].
** BadassLongcoat
* BaldOfAwesome
* BaldBlackLeaderGuy: Aside from the obvious he's a type I {{leader}}; the mastermind behind the Avengers Iniative.
* BigGood: Of ''Film/TheAvengers''.
* TheCameo: His appearances in most of the MCU films have largely been this, save for ''Iron Man 2'' and ''The Avengers''.
* TheChessmaster: As with Phil Coulson, this seems to be a mandatory skill for upper-level SHIELD agents.
* DeadpanSnarker
* DeathGlare: His general reaction to those he does not like, rather than actually shooting them. Not that that's any less deadly.
* [[spoiler:[[EtTuBrute Et Tu, Hawkeye?]]]]: In the opening scene of ''The Avengers'', [[spoiler:when he was shot by Hawkeye]].
* EyepatchOfPower
* HiddenDepths: Is genuinely devastated when Coulson is stabbed by Loki, and refers to the former as his one good eye.
* HumansAreWarriors
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Several times he takes unethical directions in performing actions he feels is right. Sometimes in big ways, such as [[spoiler:authorizing plans for weapons of mass destruction powered by the Tesseract, to defend Earth from extra-terrestrial threats]]. Sometimes in small nudges, like [[FatalFamilyPhoto Coulson's cards]].
-->'''Maria Hill''': Those cards, they were in Coulson's locker, not in his jacket.
-->'''Nick Fury''': [The Avengers] needed [[AndThisIsFor a push in the right direction]]. (''sees the Quinjet takes off'') They found it.
* ManipulativeBastard: Much like his comic counterpart.
-->'''[[Film/IronMan Tony Stark]]''': He is ''the'' spy. His ''secrets'' have secrets.
* MilitaryMaverick: Goes on his gut instinct instead of going along with [[ObstructiveBureaucrat the World Security Council]], which is why he trusted [[DysfunctionJunction the Avengers]] to defeat [[PhysicalGod Loki]].
* MovieSuperheroesWearBlack
* NervesOfSteel: Norse God with an alien army? Doesn't scare him.
* OnlySaneMan: Much like his comics counterpart, he generally comes across as the only person with his mind together in most of his scenes. Interestingly for this trope, instead of (or in addition to) being a constant annoyance to him, he uses his perspective and bluntness to help people and/or situations reach their potentials. ''The Avengers'' shows that he even plays this role to the [[WellIntentionedExtremist World Security Council]], his bosses.
** ''The Consultant'' reveals that in a world full of political power games, he and SHIELD are the only ones who are generally trying to handle the situation well.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure
* Creator/SamuelLJackson: This Nick Fury is based on the Ultimate Marvel Universe's Nick Fury, who was specifically modeled after Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson being [[OneOfUs a big comic book fan, especially of Fury himself]], he agreed for them to use his likeness, so long as he could play Ultimate Nick Fury if they ever made a movie with him.

During the events of Loki's raid on the [[AirBorneAircraftCarrier Helicarrier]], Coulson was mortally wounded in an attempt to attack him. He was reported as dead to the Avengers and most of S.H.I.E.L.D., who promised to honor his memory and stop Loki for him. However, only the highest in S.H.I.E.L.D. knew that Coulson had actually survived, and soon after he was given in a new job in assembling a team to investigate strange events and rogue supers around the world.

* ActionSurvivor: Agent Coulson seems like an average government agent with no outstanding abilities shown so far beyond basic {{Badass Normal}}cy, yet he's managed to survive attacks from both [[Film/IronMan Iron Monger]] and [[{{Film/Thor}} The Destroyer]] practically unscathed. Not ''quite'' so unscathed with Loki in ''The Avengers'', but he still made it. Also, [[IKnowKarate he knows kung fu]].
* {{Adorkable}}: On the job, deadpan and stoic. Off the job, a goofy teddy bear of a man who collects superhero trading cards.
* AffectionateNickname: Fury calls him "my one good eye" when lamenting his loss.
* AscendedExtra: Originally an [[Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse MCU]]-only side character, possibly for comic relief, [[CanonImmigrant now he's officially part of]] [[Franchise/MarvelUniverse the comics]].
* AscendedMeme: "Coulson Lives" is sometimes seen hidden in episodes of ''WebAnimation/BadDays'', then Coulson himself does in Episode 12. Then when ''Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.'''s teaser was revealed, Marvel announced tweeting said slogan would unlock a longer trailer.
* {{Badass}}: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAMgkpQYOSQ A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to Thor's Hammer]]. [[spoiler: Handily taking care of two armed robbers with only a bag of flour and martial arts.]]
** BadassInANiceSuit: The man can dress well as he can kick ass when needed.
** BadassNormal: SHIELD agent responsible for handling jerkasses in PoweredArmor and investigating mysterious aliens objects.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: On the surface, he's a pleasant man overall, but he's not called Fury's "one good eye" for no reason.
* BreakoutCharacter: Very much so. He started out as a random suit, but around ''Iron Man 2'' and ''Thor'' his current characterization began to emerge. Once his popularity reached its peak in ''The Avengers'', he then received his own show.
* {{BFG}}: He loves these, he uses one in ''The Avengers'' and several times in ''Ultimate Spider-Man''.
* CanonImmigrant: Finally made his debut on Earth-616 (Main line of comics) on the Mini-Series Battle Scars. He isn't revealed as Coulson until issue #6 though.
* TheChessmaster: Rewatch ''Iron Man 2'', ''Thor'', and the shorts starring him. It becomes apparent that he knows exactly how people are going to react, but feigns ignorance to confirm it and make them think they had a choice. Nick Fury is the same, but Coulson augments it by managing to seem remarkably inoffensive to those who don't know any better.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: Though he was joking when he said it, "Super Nanny" is an apt description of his relationship with the Avengers, or at least, with Stark.
* CoolCar: He gets one named "Lola" in ''Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.'' Don't touch her.
** ICallItVera
* TheComicallySerious: He's quite snarky and sarcastic, but you'd ''never'' pick up on that from his demeanor.
* DefiantToTheEnd: Even when mortally wounded by Loki, Coulson refuses to let the demigod talk him down.
* DisneyDeath: While seemingly killed by Loki, the knowledge that he survived was kept secret to all but Level 7 Agents.
** HeroicSacrifice: Coulson's choice in facing Loki alone could be interpreted as one, especially given the fact that he thought his death would get the Avengers to stop bickering with one another to avenge him, as it were.
** InTheBack: How it happened. Courtesy of Loki in the Hulk cell room.
** SacrificialLion: And sure enough, all who heard of his loss were motivated to defeat Loki for him. Especially [[Film/IronMan Tony Stark]].
-->'''Tony''': And there's one other person you pissed off. [[AndThisIsFor His name was Phil]]. ''(blasts Loki with his repulsors)''
** NotQuiteDead: Even after Loki seemingly killed Coulson, Clark Gregg maintain he might still be alive, stating that [[http://www.craveonline.com/film/articles/173736-clark-gregg-on-the-avengers-marvel-one-shots-iron-man-3-and-more Whedon told him beforehand that Coulson would survive the events of the film]]. Ultimately it was ambiguous until ''Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D'' was announced, upon with [[WordOfGod Joss Whedon himself]] confirmed that Coulson survived his wounding in ''The Avengers''.
* DorkKnight: Basically what happens if your stuffy and uptight math teacher decides to go out and become a secret agent.
* {{Fanboy}}: Of Captain America. He even has the trading cards.
* GenreSavvy: His reaction to an unidentified mecha opening its face and bellowing a flame up from within? "[[ThisIsGonnaSuck Oh, here we go...]]"
* GoodIsOldFashioned: This is exactly what Coulson believes that the world needs right now in ''Avengers''.
* TheHeart: Fury considers him to be this to S.H.I.E.L.D., calling him his "one good eye."
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: He is very fond of Captain America. He's got the trading cards, plus he designed Cap's modern-day outfit.
* LastNameBasis: In ''The Avengers'', Tony Stark snarks that Coulson's first name is "Agent", as opposed to "Phil". But after the agent's mortal wounding, Tony has a change of heart and when [[BadassBoast boasting to Loki]] about the various Avengers who are going to be coming for him, he finishes by referring to him by his first name. (See SacrificialLion.)
* NiceGuy: Probably one of the nicest S.H.I.E.L.D. agents there is.
* OnlySaneMan: Trapped among prima donna superheroes and morally ambiguous world security leaders.
* OriginalGeneration: [[LogicBomb Retroactively]]; see "PromotedToOpeningTitles" below.
* PerpetualSmiler: A part of his persona he uses to help guide conversations - he is almost never seen without his serene, calm smile on his face, even during otherwise morose or trying situations. Since he never loses his cool, he never drops the smile.
* PopularityPower: Hoo boy. After Coulson's death in ''The Avengers'', {{Website/Twitter}} and {{Website/Tumblr}} '''exploded''' with support for him to come back, campaigning the slogan [=#CoulsonLives=]. Their attempts were so successful that not only did Marvel bring Coulson BackFromTheDead, but [[AscendedMeme they even made tweeting #CoulsonLives unlock a trailer]] for ''Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D''.
* PromotedToOpeningTitles: He started off as just a standard suit in the first Iron Man, but his role was greatly expanded by ''Thor''. Now, he's deeply entrenched into the Marvel lore, even getting his own comics, short films and ''television series.''
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives one to Loki, followed up by blasting him with a BFG.
* TheReveal: ''Battle Scars'' #6 reveals that "Cheese", Marcus Johnson's soldier friend, is actually the 616 counterpart of Agent Coulson.
* SeenItAll: Hints of Type 1, as is typical of [[TheMenInBlack MIB]]. He also has a bit of Type 2's Genre Savviness as he orders his men to let Thor try and lift his hammer, and realized just in time that Destroyer's head opening and glowing is a very bad thing. When he calls Black Widow, who's been captured but then subsequently beats the tar out of her captors, his expression is of complete boredom as he listens to [[CurbStompBattle the resulting scuffle]] as if it were ''hold music''.
* SilentSnarker: He doesn't even have to ''say'' anything (which delighted Creator/JossWhedon to no end), just his reactions are pure gold.
* SkewedPriorities: In ''Ultimate Spider-Man'', he's gotten too into the role of school principal as opposed his actual job as secret agent.
-->'''Coulson''': I need the full power of SHIELD's legal team STAT. We need to limit how much actual meat you need to legally call something "meatloaf". We could save the [school] budget, man!
-->'''NickFury''': Coulson, we need to talk priorities.
* SharpDressedMan: His suits get progressively [[http://hellotailor.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/costumes-and-characters-of-avengers.html sharper]] as we learn more about him.
* ThatCameOutWrong: Phil's fanboy love of Cap intersects with some unintentional awkwardness when talking to the man himself.
-->'''Coulson''': I watched you while you were sleeping. (Awkward silence). I-I mean... I was present when you were unconscious from the ice.
* UnfazedEveryman: There really isn't anything that can surprise him, be it thunder gods, men in metal suits, or WWII vets who were frozen for the better part of a century. Well, the WWII vet gets a reaction, but only because [[TheKnightsWhoSaySquee he's]] a giant {{fanboy}}. Justified in that it's implied that this kind of stuff is just what S.H.I.E.L.D. ''does''.
* WideEyedIdealist: His belief in heroes, old-fashioned notions, and in the Avengers to work together as a team can somewhat be seen as this.
* WithMyHandsTied: [[spoiler:Rather than use his pistol against ''two robbers with shotguns'', he kindly slides it over to them before defeating them with [[ImprovisedWeapon a sack of flour]] and martial arts skills]].
* WolverinePublicity: ''WesternAnimation/AvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes'' has a story in [[ComicBook/AvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes the comic series]] in which Maria Hill recaps the first season, with help from NickFury's records. Coulson joins her in examining the records, despite the fact he never shows up in either season of the cartoon.

A key agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the only female Avenger. She kept surveillance on everyone from Iron Man to the Hulk, and is more than a match as a fighter, but her willingness to do good seems to come from the aftermath of an amoral past.
-----
* ActionGirl: Aside from her intellect, this is her main power. While she has no superhuman abilities, Natasha is easily the most skilled hand-to-hand combatant in The Avengers.
* TheAtoner: Wants to make up for her past as an assassin ("wipe the red from my ledger", as she puts it) by first working for S.H.I.E.L.D., then becoming an Avenger.
* {{Badass}}
** BadassNormal: A former assassin with gadgets, guns, good aim and even better close combat skills. That's still enough to qualify her as an Avenger.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With Clint Barton.
* TheChick: As part of the Avengers. Next to [[IdealHero Steve Rogers]] and Bruce Banner ([[UnstoppableRage most of the time]]), she's probably the most levelheaded and put together of the team, and is constantly trying to encourage them to work together.
* {{Child Soldier|s}}: Started working as a spy from a very young age.
* CombatPragmatist: When her fight with [[spoiler:the BrainwashedAndCrazy Hawkeye]] starts getting rough, she resorts to [[ManBitesMan biting his hand]].
* CunningLinguist: Fluent in English, Russian, French, German, Chinese, Italian, ''Latin'', and various other languages, according to ''Iron Man 2'' and ''The Avengers''.
* DarkAndTroubledPast
* FakeAmerican: InUniverse, as explained in ''The Avengers''.
-->'''Romanoff''': I'm Russian. Well, I used to be.
* GenreSavvy: She knows better than to let her guard down toward [[spoiler:the brainwashed Hawkeye]] after [[ISurrenderSuckers he sounds like he's surrendering]]. Natasha simply punches him again [[TapOnTheHead in the head]].
* GuileHero: Her primary interrogation method is manipulating the egos of her targets to make them think they have her in a state of weakness, so they are more free while gloating. [[spoiler: Just ask Loki.]]
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: An inversion, at least when compared with fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent (and partner) Hawkeye. Natasha is a crack shot, but she's an even better martial artist.
* HeelFaceTurn: She used to be a TrueNeutral assassin, [[spoiler:but made her change after Hawkeye chose not to kill her when on a mission to do so]].
* HumansAreWarriors
* ImprovisedWeapon: From beating down her captors with ''the chair they tied her to'', to working out how to fire a Chitauri blast lance just by grabbing one. [[HoistByHisownPetard There's a theme here...]]
* [[spoiler:IOweYouMyLife]]: [[spoiler:To Hawkeye since he chose to spare her.]]
* MadeOfIron: Takes a backhanded blow to the abs by the Hulk and gets up once her fear and shock wears off, with a limp for only short time. Then again, this could easily be [[TheDeterminator pure determination]] at work.
* MaleGaze: Her rear gets a lot of camera shots, especially in ''The Avengers''.
* [[MovieSuperheroesWearBlack Movie Superheroines Wear Black]]: Averted. Her costume has always been black. Inverted in ''Iron Man 2'', as her uniform is actually blue in that one.
* MsFanservice
* NoSenseOfHumor: "I don't see how that's a party."
* [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]]: Tons of guards blocking the way to Vanko? No problem. Tied to a chair, surrounded by mobsters. No problem. Extra-dimensional aliens invading New York? Slightly more tiring, but still no problem.
* PlatonicLifePartners: Hawkeye is her closest confidant, but the two are, at present, just friends. Loki at one point asks if its love, [[ShipSinking she shoots the idea down as 'for children'.]]
* ProfessionalKiller: Before joining SHIELD.
* RedBaron: According to ''Film/TheAvengers'', she is "the famous Black Widow" to post-SovietUnion countries.
* RedHeadedHeroine
* SensualSlavs
* SexySecretary: As part of her Stark Industries cover.
* SheFu: Utilizes a lot of flips and slides in her fighting style, though she does also use other kinds of close combat.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: The only female Avenger, though not the only ActionGirl.
* SpyCatsuit
* TheStoic: Has a generally dour, serious demeanour.
** NotSoStoic: Her run-in with the Hulk makes her lapse into a brief state of terror and she's shown sweating and trembling in fear more than any other member of the team.
* SuperWristGadget[=/=]ShockAndAwe: "Widow's Bite", two prototype electricity weapons that fire from her wrists. She uses these several times to take down Chitauri footsoldiers.
* [[SuperheroPackingHeat Superheroine Packing Heat]]: Has a pair of handguns on her, but she uses her hand-to-hand combat skills more often.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: It's hard to tell if her relationship with Hawkeye is this or PlatonicLifePartners.
* [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes Why Did It Have To Be The Hulk?]]: [[TheDreaded Can't blame her, though.]]

* [[FriendlySniper Friendly Archer]]: A consummate professional, but entirely approachable when off the job; even ''on'' the job, he'll toss off a dry wisecrack every so often.

* ItsPersonal: Promptly tells the others to "Get in line" about killing Loki [[spoiler:after he was freed from his brainwashing]].
* LaserSight: On his collapsible bow.
* MovieSuperheroesWearBlack: Though he's justified, seeing as he's a marksman, and mildly subverted as its based off his Ultimates inarnation, though that series was written as if it was a film. Somewhat played straight concerning his bow; Hawkeye primarily used a bright yellow longbow in the comics, until he gave it to [[LegacyCharacter Kate]] [[YoungAvengers Bishop]], to which he started used different coloured bows of many different designs. In the films, he uses a compound bow in ''Thor'', and a collapsible recurve in ''The Avengers'', both of which are coloured black.
* NoArcInArchery: Usually, but averted when he fires one arrow at an angle that causes it to fly a curved route.
* NomDeGuerre[=/=]CodeName: Hawkeye, as Romanoff calls him in the Battle of Manhattan.
* OneManArmy: Until he runs out of arrows, anyway.
* PlatonicLifePartners: With Black Widow. She trusts him most because [[spoiler:he was responsible for [[DefusingTheTykeBomb defusing her]]]].
* [[FashionableAsymmetry Pragmatic]] [[JustifiedTrope Asymmetry]]: Hawkeye wears an armguard on only his right arm (to protect from the bowstring) and a finger-guard on his left hand, (again, to protect from the bowstring).
* TheSixthRanger: He's the last to join the Avengers team [[spoiler:due to being mind-controlled by Loki for a while.]]
* SleevesAreForWimps
* SuperheroPackingHeat: When he doesn't have his bow and quiver, he tends toward keeping a sidearm on him.
* SparingTheAces: [[spoiler:Hawkeye was once assigned to kill Natasha Romanoff, but chose to spare her and let her join S.H.I.E.L.D.]]
* TheStraightAndArrowPath: He can use guns, but he prefers his bow.
* TheStoic: When he starts firing at Chitauri gliders and Loki's on his own. Otherwise he's rather emotive, even friendly when not upset.
* TheSouthpaw: Possibly. In his cameo in ''Thor'', he pulls back on the bowstring with his right hand. In ''The Avengers'', however, he pulls solely with his left and holsters his gun on his left hip. The comics Hawkeye is ambidextrous, but Jeremy Renner is lefthanded and Clint wears only one armguard (which is worn on the arm holding the bow).
* SuperWristGadget: Like the comics he keeps the shafts and the heads of his arrow separate and his wrist guard helps control the distribution.
* TrickArrow: Many varieties, from electrocution to explosive to GrapplingHookGun to superheating. There's even a HollywoodHacking arrow.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: It's hard to tell if his relationship with Black Widow is this or PlatonicLifePartners.
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:Brainwashed or not]], he's noticeably less effective with a handgun. This is lampshaded in a deleted scene.

-->'''Portrayed By''': Maximiliano Hernández
-->'''Film Appearances''': ''{{Film/Thor}}'' / ''Film/TheAvengers'' / ''Film/MarvelOneShots'' / ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier''

A Level Six Agent of SHIELD. Like Coulson, he is frequently sent across the globe to handle what Fury can't.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: It's mainly in the shorts he has any role at all.
* {{Badass}}: We finally get to see it come ''Item 47''. [[spoiler:Sitwell captures Benny and Claire by moving into the hotel room next to theirs and playing extremely loud music so that they'll come over to complain. He then has to fight off Claire while struggling to handcuff her husband and while she tries to shoot him with an alien {{BFG}}.]]
* BaldOfAwesome: Only known case in SHIELD besides NickFury, the resident BaldBlackLeaderGuy.
* BitCharacter: His appearances in ''Thor'' and ''The Avengers'' are very brief, and he tends to play a larger role in the shorts.
* CommunicationsOfficer: His role in the films.
* HeroAntagonist: In ''Item 47'', where he's ordered to hunt the OutlawCouple protagonists.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Being a Level Six agent, he thought he was at the highest of [[ClassifiedInformation information clearance levels]]. He was wrong.
-->'''Coulson''': What's your clearance level?
-->'''Sitwell''': It's Level 6. Like you. ... Come on, there's a Level 7?
::In fact, this may be why he and Blake thought Coulson was still dead, because his survival was classified as Level 7.
* IAmTheNoun: Inverted. Coulson tells Sitwell that his patsy act "is legendary. [[StealthInsult In fact, when I think of the word 'patsy'...]]"
* [[spoiler:KnifeNut]]: [[spoiler:Subverted, as he whips one out and... used it to cut Benny and Claire's bonds.]]
* TheLancer: To Coulson. Following ''Thor'' he is frequently seen at his side.
* {{Megane}}
* TheMenInBlack
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He's says he does "a great patsy", and offers to do it so SHIELD can sabotage General Ross's meeting with Fury.
* ObsessedWithFood: Not ''that'' obsessively, but he does have a tendency to bring up what the food is like at the places he visits during otherwise serious meetings.
* PreemptiveShutUp: To Coulson in ''[[Film/MarvelOneShots The Consultant]]''. That StealthInsult wasn't funny.
* RaceLift: In the comics, Sitwell is Caucasian and blonde, while in the films he's Hispanic.
* RedOniBlueOni: He comes off as a little more laid-back Red Oni compared to the stuffier Coulson's Blue Oni.
* TheSmartGuy
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: After being informed of the World Security Council's decision to put the Abomination on the Avengers, he and Coulson start plotting a way to stop this.
* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem / ExactWords: Sitwell is ordered to [[DeadlyEuphemism neutralize]] [[OutlawCouple Benny and Claire]]. [[spoiler:He does so by hiring them to SHIELD, putting them to work on reverse-engineering Chitauri weapons.]]
* SharpDressedMan
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Of Coulson after his "death". While he's appeared beforehand in the films, ''Item 47'' hinted he would take Phil's place as the everyman of SHIELD. Agent Blake even accidentally calls him "Coulson" due to force of habit. However, this was negated when Coulson was revealed to be alive. Ironically, in the comics Sitwell has been around since the 60's, whereas Coulson is a very recent CanonImmigrant, so you'd think it would be the other way around.

-->'''Film Appearances''': ''Film/IronMan'' / ''Film/IronMan2'' / ''Film/{{Thor}}'' / ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger'' / ''Film/TheAvengers'' / ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier''

The Director of [[{{SHIELD}} S.H.I.E.L.D.]] and campaigner for the Avengers Initiative. He comes to each of the heroes one by one, urging them to join SHIELD in assembling a team to protect the world from its approaching threats. Despite being personally involved in recruiting them, though, he's a busy man and has many urgent responsibilities to juggle, ''including'' dealing with his superiors, the World Security Council.
* BaldOfAwesome
* BaldBlackLeaderGuy: Aside from the obvious he's a type I {{leader}}; the mastermind behind the Avengers Iniative.
* BigGood: Of ''Film/TheAvengers''.
* TheCameo: His appearances in most of the MCU films have largely been this, save for ''Iron Man 2'' and ''The Avengers''.
* TheChessmaster: As with Phil Coulson, this seems to be a mandatory skill for upper-level SHIELD agents.
* DeadpanSnarker
* EyepatchOfPower
* HiddenDepths: Is genuinely devastated when Coulson is stabbed by Loki, and refers to the former as his one good eye.
* HumansAreWarriors
* MovieSuperheroesWearBlack
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure
And sure enough...
* ScaryBlackMan
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: He's more than willing to openly defy the World Security Council when they make [[WellIntentionedExtremist harsh calls]].
--> '''World Security Council''': Director Fury, the council has made a decision.

Nick Fury's aide and an espionage SHIELD agent. Clear-minded and pragmatic, she carries out his orders, though his seemingly reckless approach doesn't increase her trust of him.
----
* ActionGirl: Though it's only shown twice so far, once being [[EstablishingCharacterMoment her first few minutes on screen]].
** AffirmativeActionGirl: It doesn't really balance it out, but it does help to decrease Black Widow's [[TheSmurfettePrinciple Smurfette]] rating.
* BadassNormal: Would have to be in order for NickFury to trust her to use a truck and a small team to [[spoiler:chase after [[PhysicalGod Loki]] and the BrainwashedAndCrazy Hawkeye]].
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Averted. After a grenade knocks her off her feet, she gets a cut on her forehead and cheek (as shown), and both stay there for the rest of the movie.
* ByTheBookCop: This creates friction with her and Fury due to his more MilitaryMaverick style, and several times she's filed reports to the WSC criticizing his actions.
* CastingGag / DevelopmentGag: Cobie Smulders in a superhero movie directed by Creator/JossWhedon? [[WhatCouldHaveBeen A long time ago]], this team-up [[Franchise/WonderWoman was planned for a DC film]].

* LawfulStupid: Hence why Fury [[MilitaryMaverick often elects to ignore their orders]].
* MisaimedFandom: In-Universe. The WSC wanted the Abomination on the Avengers instead of the Hulk, since they viewed Blonsky [[VillainWithGoodPublicity as a war hero]] and blamed Harlem's destruction on Banner.
