* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: Hoo boy, let's count the ways, shall we?
** Going back in time and working to prevent the Tragedy from happening doesn't mean the trauma and guilt carried by Hajime [[spoiler: and the other time travelers]] is magically erased. It also leads to a lot of poor and emotionally-motivated decisions.
** Because a lot of the factors that lead to the Tragedy were unknown to the public until after it happened, Hajime and his allies have to work outside the law to change things or bring people to justice. While he does cover up his identity using his Kasugano persona, it nonetheless puts the group in the crosshairs of the police and many interested parties, and leads to mixed reactions from the public.
** Hope's Peak has a lot of secrets. When "Kasugano" appears before the world announcing that he'll expose them, they quickly begin firing teachers who they feel might've been able to leak things.
** To help fund the group's escapades, Chiaki, who comes from a fairly wealthy family, winds up taking several million yen from her family's bank account. This does ''not'' turn out well when they find out, [[spoiler: especially when they reveal they're actually not doing well financially.]]
** Much of the abuse endured by the characters has permanently affected them. [[spoiler: Emma]]'s years of being beaten and burned by her father have left her arms CoveredInScars and she struggles with chronic pain, the latter of which ''also'' lead to her becoming [[spoiler:addicted to opiates]]. Likewise, Kotoko being forced into child prostitution by her family lead to her [[spoiler: contracting HIV.]]
** [[spoiler: Nikei]]'s parents also forced him into child prostitution, but he had no one who would help him and he ended up murdering them in their sleep as a result. He's been on the run ever since, and the whole thing has left him conflicted, cynical, paranoid and deeply troubled.
** While Nagito's lymphoma goes into remission thanks to surgical intervention and subsequent treatment, his Frontotemporal Dementia remains incurable. Its progression and symptoms can only be slowed down at most, and it may still end up killing him eventually. [[spoiler: In one of Mikako's visions, he survives at least a decade into the future, so there remains some hope.]]
** No matter how much you apologize and want to make things right, forgiveness from someone you've badly hurt does not come easy. It takes time, or may never come at all. [[spoiler: Kokoro]] learns this when she reconnects with [[spoiler: Mikako.]]
** When Junya Utsugi goes on live TV asking for help in finding his daughter and that he only wants the best for her, nobody believes a word of it. Kasugano or not, he's been outed as a shitty parent and ruthless manipulator, and there's no fixing his reputation with a desperate plea.
** One of the cruelest examples is [[spoiler: the death of Kana Ise. When shot in the abdomen by a hollow-point round, OnlyAFleshWound is absolutely '''not''' in effect: she loses a lot of blood and has to have her ruined intestines replaced, which takes time and weakens their body enough for septicemia to set in. Despite the best efforts of everyone at the hospital, Kana has very little chance of survival and dies when the infection reaches her lungs.]]
** When Hajime meets Hiyoko's family, her grandmother proves to be a bigoted and controlling woman who threatens to have Hiyoko pulled out of Hope's Peak after all the chaos of the last few months, but Hajime promises he'll keep her safe. After the events of ''The Puppetmaster'', [[spoiler: she's forced Hiyoko to come home despite his best efforts.]]
** Akane doesn't talk much about her family, partly because her father and stepmother have a bit of a strained marriage and strained relationship with her siblings. [[spoiler: When they find out Akane participated in the raid on Sunny Days Island, they're heavily split on the issue, with her deadbeat father blaming her for being reckless and the others, while mad at her, point out how selfish it is to expect her to keep their family financially secure. This leads to her father walking out on them and filing for divorce.]]
** A hard lesson Hajime has to learn is that the human Chiaki Nanami and the A.I. based off of her are fundamentally different people, and he can't project all the best qualities of the latter onto the former. Doing so leads to him excusing what proves to be very problematic behavior from her.
** The idea of Hope's Peak students being guaranteed success in life once they graduate is an obsolete notion. It was once the case, but in the wake of events such as the Lost Decade, the 2008 Recession and the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, even the best Ultimates have to put in tons of hard work to make a living.
** [[spoiler:In the 2030 future, Itsuki reveals that she never got to meet Hiyoko's family because Hiyoko cut contact with her abusive, bigoted family. After Maiko stands up to Izumi, Itsuki now has fond memories of her grandmother.]]
** After months of high-tension situations, dealing with criminals and trying to fix the past, the Quantum Crew are exhausted and need a break. Turns out trusting a group of teenagers to change the future of the world isn't an ironclad plan.
** Mayumi's backstory is a particularly tragic example. [[spoiler: When she was 14, after successfully winning a big archery competition, Mayumi kissed one of the girls on her team- whom she had a crush- right in front of the crowd and the girl's mother. She shamed Mayumi in front of everyone and then forced her daughter to drop out of the team and Mayumi never saw her again. Later, she found out her crush had killed herself, but never learned the full reason why. Mayumi has been afraid to come out of the closet ever since.]]
