The title character, who refused to give in to his emotions and extract vengeance upon the man who just [[MoralEventHorizon killed both Jiraiya and Kakashi]], [[AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs levelled his village with the ground]], and [[BerserkButton nearly killed Hinata]], in order to [[SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism break the chain of hatred]] has [[SealedEvilInACan a malevolent, nine-tailed demon fox of immeasurable power sealed into himself]]--and this fox's power has a habit of seeping out of him whenever he loses his temper.

** The Straw Hat Pirates. In spite of them being one of the most notorious crews in the world, they're all kindhearted and easy to get along with, albeit quirky, and they ''never'' throw the first punch. But provoking them too much is comparable to [[DigYourOwnGrave digging your own grave]]; each member of the crew could effortlessly and singlehandedly take out an army, and they would declare war on the entire world for the sake of just one of their friends. [[spoiler:And they did, and so far they've gotten away with it]]. While harming any of their friends, especially another member of the crew, will provoke a RoaringRampageOfRevenge, each member also has particular {{Berserk Button}}s that put them in full ass-kicking mode.

** Sena is generally a NiceGuy with being a bit of a coward. But insulting his teammates is one way to [[BerserkButton tick him off]] and you'll pay a heavy price.

** Toyed with in Okiya Subaru, a friendly Sherlock Holmes-loving grad student living in Conan/Shinichi's house [[spoiler:who also gives Haibara/Sherry the chills, which only happens around Black Organization members. Most likely it's just a "friends close, enemies closer" plan]].

** Shizuo Heiwajima is a quiet yet somewhat shy and awkward young man who hates violence. He's also [[SuperStrength Shizuo]] [[HairTriggerTemper Heiwajima]].

* Of the two women central to the Anime/{{Leijiverse}}, [[Anime/QueenEmeraldas Emeraldas]] is a merciless pirate and [[spoiler:her sister]] [[Manga/GalaxyExpress999 Maetel]] is generally described as the Nice One: gentle, kind, a bit mysterious. The latter also blew up a planet because a mad doctor tried to steal her body.

** San Otonashi, a sweet, little girl (okay, [[OlderThanTheyLook not really that little]]) who [[CuteMute doesn't speak]] and hates confrontations. [[spoiler:She's not ''incapable'' of speech; her muteness is a conscious decision. Her monster identity is a [[Myth/ClassicalMythology siren]], so her voice ''[[MakeMeWannaShout kills people]]''. A villainous siren learned this hard way, as she gave off the impression of only singing a defensive song to protect her friends, when in fact she'd been singing another song ''at a pitch too high to be heard'' that was tearing him apart from within.]] Later, in the final arc of the series [[spoiler:she is fighting on par with two of the Dark Lords, the strongest monsters who once defeated the BigBad and sealed him years before]].

* Miu in ''Manga/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple''. Normally she's very amiable and rather pacific, but if you [[spoiler:put all her friends on the verge of death? She ''snaps'' and can no longer recognize friend from foe and will kill anyone who gets in her way. Not that she actually managed to before Kenichi stopped her.]] Miu mentions offhandedly that one of the reasons her grandfather travelled with her as a child was probably to get her immense rage under control. [[spoiler:Possibly runs in the family, judging by her father.]]

** Minako Aino/Sailor Venus is a loving girl who can't help but help people even to her own detriment, and is a blood donor. She's also TheDreaded for the Dark Kingdom, both manga and anime, and in the manga she [[spoiler:''killed her true love because he was on the Dark Kingdom's side'']], and brutally dispatched a BrainwashedAndCrazy Makoto for attacking Usagi.

* Touko Sakurajima, one of the two protagonists of ''My Girlfriend Cheated on Me With a Senior, So I’m Cheating on Her With His Girlfriend'', is a kind and generous woman... But when she learns her boyfriend is cheating on her she becomes determined first to confirm it and then to make him regret being born by making sure he becomes completely dependant on her and then publicily expose his cheating and dump him on Christmas Eve. As for the other protagonist, Yuu Isshiki, he's known as a very nice guy... But not only he goes with Touko's plan, his best friend later reminds him he has a history of violence when furious.

* Nadeshiko Fujisaki of ''Manga/ShugoChara'' sweet, calm, polite, and all around pleasant...that is, unless, [[BerserkButton you happen to spark her character change]]. Note: [[spoiler: I know Nadeshiko is actually a boy but I don't want to spoil people who don't know this yet.]]

** This was ''supposed'' to be Alice's schtick in ''Anime/DokiDokiPrettyCure'' in that she's a very nice person with a ''very'' short temper, however due to certain tropes coming into play, what could have been BullyingTheDragon turns into PokeThePoodle.

*** Brook, the musician, is somewhere between a gentleman and a DirtyOldMan in his behavior. His preferred method of fighting can be summed up in four words: YouAreAlreadyDead (mixed with GhostlyChill after the TimeSkip). [[RunningGag Oh... but, he's already dead...]] Don't want to end up on the wrong end of his sword? Don't disrespect life, don't look at him like he's…leftovers, in a predatory context (for those not familiar, he's a [[DemBones reanimated skeleton]]), and above all else, ''do not'' [[NobodyTouchesTheHair damage his afro]]. Does that last one seem silly? It's not.

** Hatsuharu Sohma is usually kind, if eccentric and a little out of it, but when he snaps he turns into "Black Haru", a bloodthirsty version of himself with a whole lot of attitude. When he finds out about Akito's abuse of Rin, he's so outraged that he pins her to a wall and nearly punches her out, leaving her stunned and wide-eyed; this is made all the more impressive when one recalls that, as Akito is God of the Zodiac, Haru shouldn't even be able to stand up to her, let alone physically assault her, due to the [[HereditaryCurse curse]].
** Tohru Honda herself is an AllLovingHero, kind, polite, and sweet to everyone even if they don't return her kindness, but she will ''not'' hesitate to protect her friends and those she loves. When Akito threatens to lock up and torture a terrified Yuki for defying her, Tohru intervenes and ''shoves her away from him''.

* ''Literature/{{Baccano}}'' seems to like this trope a lot. Many of the characters come across as very amiable individuals -- that is, until you push them too far. For example: [[spoiler:the resident ShrinkingViolet Jacuzzi Splot once shot up eighteen Mafia speakeasies single-handedly, in one day, on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge after the Russo Family kills several of his friends]].
** [[spoiler:Claire Stanfield]] wasn't planning to kill you -- no, siree. All he wanted to do was conduct his train, ogle that cute girl in the first class car, and tell silly ghost stories to pass the time. But no, you just ''had'' bring this whole "train hijacking" thing into this. And [[{{Retirony}} Tony]] -- did you ''really'' have to kill Tony? What did he ever do to you? Oh well, it's too late now. He's just gonna have to [[TortureTechnician teach you a lesson]] now. [[AxCrazy A very painful, bloody lesson]]...
** In the LightNovels, Eve Genoard also enacts this trope. When [[spoiler:Gustavo Baggeta]] brags to her that he killed her father and oldest brother, she almost immediately casts aside her status as TheIngenue, picks up a dropped revolver, and tries to blow his head off.
*** She shows signs of this in the anime as well, when she escapes from the Runoratas by tying one of them up, and possibly knocking him out as well.
*** The anime example doesn't really count, as the "Runorata" who was tied up was actually a spy and a good guy, and it's heavily implied (really all but outright stated) that he let her go and tied himself up.

* The Hakuho Academy Space Yacht Club from ''Literature/BodaciousSpacePirates''. Do not confuse them for a bunch of easily-scared high school girls if you value your retinas.

* ''Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex'': [[TheHero Kamijou Touma]] is a fairly optimistic and friendly guy who despite his never-ending bad luck is willing to help anyone in need. Press him though, and you will see why the Magic Side and a select few in the Science Side (from [[WorldsStrongestMan Accelerator]] to [[MadScientist the Kiharas]]) [[TheDreaded are so terrified of]] "[[RedBaron The]] [[TheDeterminator Imagine]] [[MookHorrorShow Breaker]]".

* In ''LightNovel/DidntISayToMakeMyAbilitiesAverageInTheNextLife'' you have a few examples, including the main heroine, but none beat her friend Pauline. Pauline is normally a very quiet, gentle, meek girl who's focused on healing arts. But if you make one comment disparaging her friends, she becomes a whole different person, screaming curses at her opponent, even in front of the king, while ferociously launching brutal attacks perfectly aimed at the best weak spots.

* In ''Literature/{{Durarara}}'', the nicer you are, the more the character is messed up in the mind. [[spoiler:[[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass Mikado]] is the pure definition of this trope as he can switch from being the nicest person in the series to the scariest when he's angered. [[TranquilFury And when he's angry, he means everything he says]]]]. [[spoiler:Not to mention, as a closet Adrenaline Junkie, he needs to encounter grander situations to get his fix as even supernatural encounters become the new normal to him. Eventually he starts escalating situations himself.]]

* ''Literature/FromTheNewWorld'': Asahina Tomiko, chair of the "ethics committee," and the only member who treats Saki and her friends with anything approaching respect. She helps them out of several tricky situations, and always seems polite, reasonable, and levelheaded. But when [[spoiler:Yakomaru's army invades the village during a festival, killing many people, including one of her friends,]] she does not plan on taking it lightly.

** Issei Hyoudou is a ChivalrousPervert who utterly reveres his harem, and he will defend them against anything or anyone who hurts them in anyway. Case in point, when Diodora Astaroth bragged about his plans to rape Asia in front of Issei, the latter gave the treacherous devil a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown that made Diodora fear dragons for the brief remainder of his life.
** Issei's TopWife and ClubPresident, Rias Gremory, adores her servants dearly, and harming any of them is a good way for her to send you to the afterlife. Raynare learned this the hard way.
** Gasper Vladi is an AttractiveBentGender male, but once you [[spoiler: mock anything that is related to Issei, especially his (temporary) death, he lost it in a grisly scene seemingly ripped straight out of ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}''. Georg found that out the hard way.]]
*** Which looks like a picnic compared to what happened when a thug messed his ChildhoodFriend, Valerie Tepes. [[spoiler: The hoodlum wound up facing an enraged Elder God, Balor, that completely ignored his pleas for mercy and offers of supplication, and completely no-selled everything the Tepes faction could throw at it while tearing them apart.]]

* Played completely straight near the end of ''LightNovel/{{Inukami}}''. The local YamatoNadeshiko (appropriately named Nadeshiko) finally snaps when the BigBad of the series [[spoiler:kills her "master" and love interest, Kaoru, after leading him in an EvilPlan designed solely to cause Kaoru to suffer despair.]] Nadeshiko prays to the Heavens for a power [[spoiler:that she gave up because of nearly killing an entire human village after losing herself in bloodlust]] and proceeds to wail on the GreaterScopeVillain for some time.

* Nanami of ''LightNovel/{{Katanagatari}}'' gives us the impression of just being Shichika's demure, DelicateAndSickly older sister. Then comes Episode 4 and the Maniwa Insect Squad with the intent of capturing or killing her, and it turns into a [[CurbStompBattle one-sided slaughter]]. She even gives off a SlasherSmile while she's at it. It's also worth mentioning that at this point of the story she seems to be [[spoiler:the strongest character in the series, who's not only immune to non-lethal poisons and generally unable to die, but also able to learn most techniques by seeing them once and master them after seeing or using them a '''second time''' (not to mention that she's probably ridiculously strong, since she was able to easily fight with the main character knowing same techniques as him)]]. You should never underestimate nice characters...

* ''Literature/LegendOfTheGalacticHeroes'' has many:
** Sigfried Kircheis is Reinhardt's conscience and a nice and gentle man... As shown when he conquered a rebellious planet ''[[ToWinWithoutFighting with a single death on both sides]]'' (the enemy leader, who had a VillainousBreakdown when Kircheis annihilated his automated defences and was killed by his followers to avoid getting killed themselves). He's also the only admiral who has ''ever'' caught [[TheStrategist Yang]] with his pants down.
** At home, Reinhardt von Lohengramm is almost as nice and gentle as Kircheis. He also ''conquered the known universe'', deposed the Goldenbaum dynasty because emperor Friedrich IV forced his sister to become his mistress, annihilated fleets crewed by millions of men, and ruthlessly killed a large number of criminals. But not their families, [[AndYourLittleDogToo while the Goldenbaums used to do this]].
** Hildegarde is well known as Reinhardt's second conscience [[spoiler: after Kircheis' death]]. Her methods to deal with Reinhardt's enemies are rather similar to [[WellIntentionedExtremist Oberstein]]'s, who is ruthless enough to ''allow the nuking of a planet to score a propaganda victory'' ([[TheExtremistWasRight to Oberstein's defence, it did in fact shorten the Imperial Civil War of months as he expected]]).
** Yang Wen-Li, [[TheMagnificent the Magician]]. A lazy man who joined the Free Planets Alliance Star Fleet only to pay for college, who is also AFatherToHisMen and greatly regrets any death that happens in battle. [[TheStrategist He's the greatest admiral of the Long War]], easily conquering the unconquerable Iserlohn, [[spoiler: casually smashing Heinessen's defence {{Kill Sat}}s during the Alliance Civil War]], and generally winning with such skills that [[ConfusionFu rarely someone can see his moves before they find themselves attacked on the flank]]. Then there's the fact that his plan to deal with the Imperial supremacy after the Alliance and Imperial civil wars was to try and kill Reinhardt to cause a new civil war among Reinhardt's subordinates...
** Julian Mintz, Yang's ward, is tied with Kircheis as the nicest guy in the series. When the Earth Church [[spoiler: assassinated Yang]], the cultists encountered him and failed to survive.
** Frederica Greenhill, Yang's eventual wife. A good and gentle-hearted woman, who wanted nothing more than to retire with Yang and live off their combined pensions. Then [[spoiler: the Alliance government after the war had Yang arrested with an excuse and was about to execute him]], and the wannabe executor got a bullet in the head from her personally.
** The good emperors between [[WellIntentionedExtremist Rudolph the Great]] and Reinhardt fell into this category:
*** Kasper, the fifth emperor, was a gentle soul, unfit to rule beyond removing from power the corrupt viscount Eckhart, who had been the ''de-facto'' ruler under Kasper's predecessor. Then Eckhart led a group of assassins to try and kill Kasper... [[OhCrap Only to find he was waiting for them with a shooting squad]]. After which [[{{Cincinnatus}} he abdicated to leave the throne to the more capable Julius]] and disappeared with his lover.
*** The eight emperor Otfried II restored the savvy policies of crown prince Franz-Otto under the reign of emperor Julius, recreating the stable and growing economy that Otfried's father Sigismund II had ruined. To do so, he overthrowed his father and had his three favourite ministers and accomplices executed, their assets providing much-needed cash for the Imperial treasury.
*** Fifteenth emperor Erich II [[TheMagnificent the Bloodstopper]] earned his name for overthrowing his predecessor August II [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast the Bloodletter]] and restoring justice. He did so by staging a successful rebellion, and upon taking the throne he promoted three ranks the commander of the Imperial Guard for killing August II and preventing a bloodbath when the rebels arrived before having him executed for the murders he committed on the Bloodletter's orders.
*** Twenty-second emperor Gustav was a nice but sickly young man, who had been previously passed over for the throne due his poor health. He started reforms to wipe out the corruption and palace conspirancies that were running rampart since his father's reign, only to get poisoned... So, before dying, he crowned his half-brother Maximilian Joseph II, whose mother was a commoner, knowing well that he ''would'' avenge him. Plus the giant middle finger to the high nobles by crowning the son of a commoner.
*** Twenty-third Maximilian Joseph II was known as [[TheMagnificent "The Seer" and "The Rebuilder"]] because [[TheGoodKing he was just that good and nice as a ruler]], even stopping enforcement of the Inferior Genes Exclusion Act (under which handicapped people were to be executed). He also ''crushed'' the corruption and palace conspirancies among the High Nobles running rampart since his father's reign.
*** Twenty-fourth emperor Kornelias I {{Invoked}} this to come out of the shadow of his predecessor Maximilian Joseph II, and ruled as a fair and open minded emperor while trying to solve peacefully the war against the Free Planets Alliance, going on since one of his predecessors. As he knew their ancestors had had legitimate reasons to escape the Empire and they had no reason to actually trust him, he sent emissaries for [[RuleOfThree three times]] to [[DontMakeMeDestroyYou beg them to submit peacefully and with negotiated conditions instead of making him conquer them.]] The Alliance, riding high on [[CurbStompBattle annihilating an Imperial fleet in the only large-scale confrontation so far]], laughed at his proposals... [[WhosLaughingNow Until Kornelias]] ''[[WhosLaughingNow personally]]'' [[WhosLaughingNow bulldozed through the Alliance Star Fleet]], and the only reason he didn't conquer the Alliance then and there was that [[EnemyCivilWar a group of High Nobles decided it was the right time to stage a palace coup]] to try and annull his and Maximilian Joseph's reforms, forcing the emperor to come home and annihilate ''them'' instead. Then he proved himself as genuinely nice when he decided that repairing the strain in the Imperial economy and military left by the coup was more important than finishing the job with the Alliance.
*** The main faults of the thirty-fourth emperor Friedrich IV's were that he was too gentle to be the emperor and a bit of a lecher. He also saw the corruption of the Galactic Empire, and his solution was to ''[[TheChessmaster set up Reinhardt as the hero who would wipe out the Goldenbaum Dynasty and the corrupt High Nobles]]'', knowing well that it would take a civil war.

* Misa Anehara from ''Literature/ModernMagicMadeSimple'' is usually laid back and playful but is actually one of the most powerful modern-day magicians and deadly when serious.

* Hatou from ''Manga/MurasakiiroNoQualia'' is a very laidback character. That is, until [[spoiler:[[KillTheCutie Yukari dies]]]].

** That's only in the movie. In the original manga, what sets her off is the Torumekians landing in the Valley without permission or quarantine (contaminating the Valley's crops and trees), having their knights attempt to pick a fight, defiling a grave Nausicaa dug, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking bringing Worm-handlers into the Valley, whose slugs -- attracted by the scent of the trinket Nausicaa is hiding - slither up her body]]. The result of her snapping is the same, though.

** [[RobotGirl Chachamaru]] is a nice, soft spoken robo-maid, who has a crush on Negi. She can also [[spoiler: call down a massive blast of energy which can obliterate an extremely powerful summoned demon]] by using the power of... cats.
*** Even if you can survive the KillSat, do not hurt her. Negi [[TranquilFury does not approve]].

* ''LightNovel/No6'': Sion. Just check out his reaction when Rikiga suggests Nezumi become a prostitute or when he [[spoiler:shoots a guy in Episode 10 for trying to kill Nezumi or in the novels when he nearly strangers a man for attempting to kill Nezumi]]. Nezumi even says Sion's not to be underestimated.

* [[ShyBlueHairedGirl Umi]] [[OnlySaneMan Sonoda]] from ''Anime/LoveLive'' is arguably one of the nicest and competent members of µ's and one of Honoka and Kotori's closest friends, which means that doing anything to piss her off, such as abandoning your dreams of being a school idol, will not end well for anyone who dares do so. Honoka found this out the hard way in Episode 11 of Season 1 courtesy of an ArmorPiercingSlap.

** Yugiri is kind, beautiful, motherly, [[ArmorPiercingSlap and has one hell of a hand slap]]. She's not above harshly scolding those who let their troubles get the best of them and will fervently try to get them to regain their senses. ** Alphonse is a GentleGiant who wouldn't hurt a fly, but he has come close to flying into a merciless rage (and does a few times in [[Anime/FullmetalAlchemist the first anime]]) on multiple occasions. You do '''not''' want to mess with those he cares about. Seriously, DON'T. If his older brother Ed can't beat him in a fight, you won't.

* In ''LightNovel/AscendanceOfABookworm'' Maine is generally a sweet girl whose personality flaws can generally be attributed to NoSocialSkills, not malice. However, when people make her angry they become terrified of her. It's eventually shown that this is not because she's vicious when it comes to retaliation but because the only thing she can use her overwhelming mana for at this point is releasing it in an aura of intimidation. [[spoiler:Apart from the priest who threatens her family. She begins throwing out aura wildly and nearly gives him a heart attack before another priest can calm her down.]]

* ''LightNovel/TheAsteriskWar'':
** Ayato Amagiri shows perfectly that a tournament-winning martial artist is only nice because he can ''afford'' to be nice. Anyone unlucky enough to get on his bad side gets punched through a wall or sliced to pieces with his LaserBlade.
** Claudia Enfield is the friendly, teasing StudentCouncilPresident, with all the political influence that would imply. She makes no effort to hide that she engages in shady schemes and is willing to take advantage of situations.
** Kirin Toudou is a trained swordswoman who also manages to be cute as a button. When she gets pushed too far, she proves her sword skills are no joke.

* In the last episode of ''Manga/DeathNote'', Matsuda, by far the nicest, gentlest character in the entire show, [[spoiler:seems to suffer a HeroicBSOD when Light finally reveals himself to be Kira after ''years'' of having put his complete faith in Light's innocence, but when Light tries to use a piece of the notebook to quickly write Near's name, [[ImprobableAimingSkills Matsuda immediately shoots the pen out of his hand.]] He angrily asks Light what his father even died for if the murderer he was trying to catch was his own son who led him to his death, and Light just calls his father a fool and tries to goad Matsuda into killing everyone in the room so his death won't be in vain. When Matsuda doesn't fall for it, Light tries one more time to kill Near, and Matsuda [[RageBreakingPoint completely snaps, shooting Light four more times, and he would have put the last bullet between his eyes if the rest of the task force hadn't grabbed him at the last second.]]]]

Sure, he's a total sweetheart who rarely holds a grudge and will help just about anyone, and he's a Beast Tamer, a class known for being less than ideal in combat, but may the gods help your soul if you are someone who has earned his grudge. After getting himself a BattleHarem of "the strongest races," he's personally a magical and martial powerhouse who isn't afraid to fight dirty if he has to, such as sending swarms of insects with either poisonous or paralytic properties at you.

*** Jimbei, the helmsman, is a noble fishman with a kind, gentle and jolly nature that befits his whale shark nature, and was considered a FatherToHisMen to his old crew, the Sun Pirates, and is practically like a third father to Luffy. He's also an Ex-Warlord who's mastered a fighting style that utilizes water to inflict heavy internal damage on his opponents. Don't disrespect the will of his late former captain Fisher Tiger or of the late queen Otohime of Fishman Island, don't discriminate against Fishmen in general, and especially don't assume he was an ex-slave because he's a Fishman.
