* AbortedArc: Because this adaptation was cancelled before it got to the Duelist kingdom stuff, we never see Toei's version of Kaiba put together the last pieces of his shattered heart, contributing to his [[Heel Face Turn]] in manga, which turns him into the considerably less psychotic Kaiba we see in the second series.

** To be fair, it's much more contiguous in the manga. Also note that the villains of the second series utilize such magic, while Yami Yugi's magic is toned down to s family-friendly version of the Mind Crush. Another thing to note is that it's never explained why Yami Yugi stops using them, while in the manga there's actually an [[CharacterDevelopment explanation]] why he decides to stop using Penalty Games after Duelist Kingdom.

* AdaptationDecay: Many manga chapters were skipped in favor of filler episodes, plot and character details were changed, and was generally done in a way that this version was canned before it could make it to Duelist Kingdom. The only truly faithful arcs were Shadi's Shadow Games and most of Bakura's Monster World RPG.

The first YuGiOh anime series (also known as [[FanNickname Season 0]]) was an anime Series created by Toei Animated based on the first 7 chapters of YuGiOh manga. It tells the story from before the Card game had any importance, and a little bit afterwards.

It was eventually replaced by [[Anime/YuGiOh the second anime series]], which prefers to skip all the first parts of the YuGiOh manga [[PlotTumor in favor of focusing only on the Card Game arcs]]. Nevertheless, the second series [[BroadStrokes does make some nods to these one which can only be fully understood if you've watched it]].

The second anime series explains very little of these plots, with a good reason: before duel monsters entered in, [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness this series was completely different]], bordering more a G-Rated {{Saw}} than YuGiOh. For this exact same reason, both series can complement quite well without feeling you are watching the same twice. (at least, until it gets to duel monsters)

It's also worth noticing that many things created by these series were later used as inspiration for later chapters, like the more common presence of Seto Kaiba as a villain. It's also worth notice that this encarnation of Seto Kaiba is what inspired Noa, the BigBad from the 3 season of the second season.

It Spawned a 30 minutes OVA, a few video games and [[TabletopGame/YuGiOhCarddasVersion a card game created by Bandai]]. (which would later be replaced as well by [[TabletopGame/YuGiOh the newer card game]])
