The director's cut tries to repurpose the footage into a semblance of a story, with emphasis on tries.

* SoundtrackDissonance: In the Director's Cut of the first OVA most of the battle scenes have cool but really unfitting music. Especially in the final battle. Then ther are the tracks "Violence of the Flame" that plays right after the screen fading to black with alarm sirens wailing loudly and a character screaming in terror. And after that, "Merciless Soldier". While the lyrics make themathically sense for both songs, you'd think that these tracks would be used to celebrate the protagonist for defeating some gigantic menace and making everything alright, not for [[spoiler: condemning an entire planet's biological life to death and mentally breaking a female character.]]
** To be fair, while the music for the second half of the final battle really fits with the original OVA...it's not very exciting for a final battle. Violence of the Flame fits for a final battle and is kind of ironic since it sounds like a very heroic theme.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: No one really knows what exactly should Crutes/Krutes/Krutz/Kurtz be called. Also Vaiya's name is actually Paiya. Nexrum has been written as Negstrom in the prequel comic. Geist's name according to his dogtags is "Most Dangerous Soldier-02 Geist", but the opening scene calls him "Most Dangerous Geist" as does the full title of the OVA ("Demon-garbed Soldier Most Dangerous Geist"), and then Crutes/Krutes/Krutz/Kurtz comes in and calls him just "MDS".

Also note that he does this after he kills Krutz, in defense, as Krutz attempts to kill him , after throwing a Religious rant and activating the Final Boss. With Krutz dead, the only form of "authority" that Geist could follow as a pre-programmed soldier is to activate the Death Force, as the Protocol would then be the only "high ranking" power at hand/in the vicinity).

However, this was done strategically in order to kill off all yor an Nexrum/Corporate forces, which occurs successfully, as Geist also manages to kill Krauser + destroy the last Nexrum stronghold, regardless of the fact that it is the last Human stronghold. Note that during a conversation between the Nexrum Commander and Krauser, it is mentioned that the Earth is waiting to re-claim and populate the planet, in other words, the humans on the planet are left to their own devices. This would essentially imply that Geist is fighting for the Earth/Regular Army, as can be seen from both the Mangas/Comics and the actual OVA. The whole thing doesn't make much sense really if you think about it though, because we've seen that Death Force robots being controlled by Earth forces, however apparently that doesn't apply to the swarm itself. It is also quite an inefficient battle plan to deploy a certain weapon to kill your enemies and then deploy another weapon against that previously deployed weapon to destroy it, so why the Earth forces don't make their move towards Jerra after Death Force gets released, no one can say.
** In the first OVA Geist did directly fight for the Regular Army, though he ended up killing an officer.

** Might count for PointlessDoomsdayDevice because it would be more convenient for the machines to target armed forces that are not part of the Earth loyalists, in that way Nexrum could be wiped out without the planet's resident population being completely obliterated alongside all kinds of infrastructure, which would cut down on the subsequent work needed to destroy the Death Force after their mission completion by extra-planetary Earth forces and the need to rebuild the entire ecosystem and infrastructure all over, and to repopulate the planet.

* RobotWar - Triggered ''[[MoralEventHorizon intentionally]]'' by Geist. (In order to accomplish the final directive of the Regular Army's protocol, if President Ryan were to get assassinated by Nexrum/Corporate Forces.

This also feeds into his blood-lust, as he is programmed by nature to continue fighting.
* RocketPunch - RocketPunch: The final boss' third form does this.
* SlasherSmile - SlasherSmile: Geist has a tendency to do this.
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism - SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism: Extremely cynical to the point of being nihilistic, which a few people find appealing.
* SlidingScaleOfSillinessVersusSeriousness - SlidingScaleOfSillinessVersusSeriousness: Very, very serious, despite the [[{{Narm}} horrible acting]]; some people feel it should have taken itself less seriously whereas others prefer its extremely high level of seriousness.
* SoundtrackDissonance - SoundtrackDissonance: In the Director's Cut of the first OVA most of the battle scenes have cool but really unfitting music.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS - No one really knows what exactly should Crutes/Krutes/Krutz/Kurtz be called.

* [[spoiler: TheBadGuyWins]] - The first OVA.
* TheDreaded - MD Geist stands for "Most Dangerous Geist" and he "fought so extraordinarily ferocious that he was regarded as dangerous and imprisoned on a satellite."
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill - Geist kills a mecha pilot stabbing him in the head with a knife ''that has a hand grenade attached to its handle'' while inverse hanging from the top of the cockpit.
* TraumaInducedAmnesia - Vaiya experiences this during the sequel to some extent. She has horrific flashbacks of Geist and is incredibly frightened by them, but is unable to decipher coherently what they mean.
* VillainProtagonist - Geist is either this or a SociopathicHero. You can make a case for MD Krauser in the sequel too; he's the designated villain, but at least he's "less evil" than Geist and there are points where the OVA suggests "shifting protagonistism" onto him..

* OffModel - The series is quite possibly the poster child Anime for this Trope.
** A non-exhaustive list includes strange lighting, objects (or characters) teleporting or disappearing, limbs moving in strange ways, multiple coloring errors on one object, drawing errors, and '''one of the dead characters' corpse levitating in the air for a second.''' The generally horrendous animation is one of the things that made MD Geist infamous.

The generally horrendous animation is one of the things that made ''made'' MD Geist infamous.infamous. [[http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/buried-treasure/2008-10-02/buried-garbage-m.d-geist Even the animators who worked on it are said to have hated it]].
