* FreudianExcuse: Shadow was a black ops organization of the Hunter Association, but were killed when they used On, a forbidden technique. The chairman at the time ordered all of Shadow's families to be killed as well. Gaki, Shura, and Rengoku were among such group but survived the purge by hiding in the woods and were forced to go on the run when their village was destroyed.

''Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission'' is a 2013 film based on the ''Manga/HunterXHunter'' manga series, it is the second film of the series and, surprisingly, the second one that came out within the same year. It apparently takes place between Greed Island and the Chimera Ant (some time before latter arc begins as it's mention that Gon and Killua were traveling with Kite and took a break from that).

Years ago before the main timeline, Netreo did battle against a man named Jed who could use a mysterious ability known as "On". While he managed to defeat him, Jed vowed his grudge against Netero would never end.

* BadassInDistress: Netero ends up captured by Rengoku's Go ability which pins him to a wall and restricts his movement. It can't be touched lest it attacks whomever tries, thus Netero ends up subdued for most of the movie.
* DieHardOnAnX: The film is essentially the villains take over a building and our heroes trying to free it. Heck the villains plot involves holding the place hostage in exchange for something (the Black Report in this case) and one of the fights takes places in an elevator shaft.
* FreeFallFight: Done several time during Gon and Killua's fight against Gaki in the elevator shaft.

* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: During the climax in the arena level, we see Zushi and Biscuit taking care of some Shadow mook. Wing does too, though offscreen as when were shown him his opponents are already defeated.

* RedemptionEqualsDeath: After Gon and Killua defeat him, Gaki makes small talk with the boys and they all manage to get along well together. Unfortunately this means he has broken the contract with his On (since he had vowed to never let a hunter defeat him) and the power causes him to blow up. His last act telling the boys to run before they're caught in the blast radius.
* TakesOneToKillOne: After Gon get infected with On, he attempts to fight Jed with it, but naturally Jed's own stronger On abilities counter his. [[spoiler: [[TakeAThirdOption So Gon combines both properties of On and his Nen to surpass Jed's]].]]
* TakingTheBullet: As he dies, Shura spits out one more needle containing Jed's blood and throw it a Leorio. Kurapika jump in the way, taking the hit and being infected with On.

* TheBrute: Gaki of the Shadow bunch. He's relies on pure strength and one of the tougher members of their group.
* TheCameo: Partison makes a cameo while Beans is handling the hostage negotiation with Jed, Beans complaining about him not even trying to help with the situation.
* ThePowerOfHate: How "On" works, it draws on the hatred of it user to use it's power, even allowing the user to use every category of the Nen ability. Naturally this is what allows Jed to return from the dead when it seem Netero had killed him. However the downside is that it's a contact type and will result in death when not abided.
* TheVirus: "On" can be transmitted through blood, locking a Nen users ability and forces the infectee to use On. Naturally since this is a contract type, even unwillingly, those that refuse will end up dying.

* NotSoDifferent: Shura cites this of Kurapika, with both wanting to avenge their fallen clan members after they were exterminated (Shura's by the Hunter Associate, Kurapika's by The Phantom Troupe). Kurapika disagrees, stating while he does want revenge on his clan's killers, he doesn't want to get innocents involved nor lose himself completely in hatred in pursuit of it.

Just as the competition is about to begin, said group suddenly invade, take over the building and capture Netero, who's there to oversee the events. Gon, Killua and Kurapika manage to sneak out from their detection and go head upward to free the arena, all the while, trying to find exactly who these people are.

Kurapika is also there, still acting as Neon Nostrade's bodyguard who has shown up to watch the events. Leorio was invited to come to... but suddenly ends up attacked by cloaked figures while in transit to the arena.
