* AmbiguousGender: Averted with Ash's ''entire'' Unova team thus far: a Snivy which Ash eventually catches uses Attract on Pikachu successfully, meaning it's female. It also Attracts Oshawott and Tepig, making them male as well. Ash counters this strategy with Pidove, confirming it as female. This is also unique for being the first time Ash has had two confirmed female team members. [[spoiler:His Scraggy and Swadloon have also been confirmed male.]]

* DidNotDoTheResearch: The long journey to Vermillion City takes place (in part at least) on Route 24, according to Ash. Route 24 goes the opposite direction from Vermillion City in the game (though they do meet Bill two episodes later...).

Widget Series are series that are weird, not (just) Japanese.

* WidgetSeries: While not as over the top as other examples, this show contains a lot of very Japanese elements, such as references to their folklore, especially in earlier episodes. When the producers realised that ''Pokémon'' was a global phenomenon, they deliberately dialed this back.

* AmbiguousGender: Averted with Ash's ''entire'' Unova team thus far: a Snivy which Ash eventually catches uses Attract on Pikachu successfully, meaning it's female. This is also unique for being the first time Ash has had two confirmed female team members. [[spoiler: His Scraggy and Swadloon have also been confirmed male.]]

* AscendedMeme: Fans had been showing a dislike for the Generation V Water-type starter Oshawott ever since it and its fellow Unova starters were originally revealed. Of course the first episode of the BW saga, just had to have an Oshawott that did not react positively to being rejected for Snivy by Trip, and promptly began to stalk Ash around after he thought the little otter was cute. He ended up joining Ash alongside his obligatory generic Flying-type (Pidove) two episodes later.

* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Lots of times, but Team Rocket most obviously. Compare [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7Ue-IJBCpU&feature=related their actually menacing first appearance]] with anything including them nowadays, or even anywhere as soon as six months after they first appeared.

** Misty's Psyduck can't seem to do much but take up space. However, it's known for absolutely devastating anything hostile when it's headache gets too much for it to bear.
** Nando qualifies somewhat too. Take it from the top: he's a guy with long hair, long eyelashes, and he carries a harp. And most of his Pokémon look like easy opponents at first (particularly Roselia when it was a Budew). [[spoiler:Which is why you don't underestimate a Coordinator/Trainer who got into the Top 4 of the Sinnoh Grand Festival. * CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler:Paul challenges Pyramid King Brandon to a battle. The majority of Paul's Pokémon are knocked out in two hits by Brandon's three Regis.]]
** Another time, Ash takes out Gym Leader Watson's three Pokémon with one attack each by Pikachu, before they get a chance to attack, thanks to an accidental power-up (which, ironically, Wattson was responsible for).
** A second Sinnoh example: Paul vs. Cynthia (the ''League Champion''). Four attacks by Garchomp, four of Paul's Pokémon knocked out, match over.
*** This also happens whenever Ash takes on a member of a given region's Elite Four, like Lorelei/Prima or Drake. CharacterDevelopment then kicks in as Ash learns from his defeats.
*** To be sure, Paul's Torterra managed to bring Garchomp to its knees in pain. Ash never gets that far.
**** IIRC, Ash never got to face Cynthia (or even a Garchomp) in a battle. And his Torterra has been suffering TheWorfEffect ever since reaching that stage.
** [[spoiler:Barry's battle with Paul at the Sinnoh League. Barry didn't beat a single one of his Pokémon, and his Skarmory went out in one hit in mere seconds.]]
** What about going back to Kanto? Sabrina doesn't simply curbstomp Ash and Pikachu: she brutalizes Pikachu, humiliates it, shrinks Ash and his friends to the size of dolls, humiliates him, and both physically and emotionally ravages the team as a whole...'''THREE TIMES'''!!
*** ...[[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything You're talking]] [[MindRape about the]] [[FetishFuel battle, right?]]
** [[spoiler:In the same vein as his first full battle against Paul and his battle with Tobias, Ash's battle against Trip in episode 10 of BW ends in Ash's defeat with his opponent only losing two Pokémon.]]
** Ash vs. Flint deserves a special mentioning. Flint's Infernape utterly destroys Ash's Buizel and Infernape in one move a pop. It then flexes its muscles a bit against Pikachu before it casually overpowers the mouse's Volt Tackle with ''Thunder Punch'' and wins handily. Damn.

** Barry, the rival from the fourth generation, got pretty good screentime as well; enough to be Ash's secondary rival in DP, behind Paul.

** Also, inverted hard with the Orange Islands episode where Ash and Charizard finally bond. Charizard gets caught in an Ice Beam and frozen solid. With his tail-flame, [[LifeMeter indicating his health]], running low, Ash spends all night rubbing him to keep him warm. [[FridgeLogic Why he didn't just put him in a Pokéball and brought him to the nearest Pokécenter is beyond me, though...]]
*** Perhaps it's so the two can have some bonding time in where Charizard just wouldn't go rampant and would have to stay still and listen given his condition.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Team Rocket sides with Ash several times, their transformations into good guys seeming permanent in the second movie, yet they continue to become Ash's enemies again and again and try to steal Pikachu.

* JokerImmunity: Team Rocket. They've survived falls into gorges and over waterfalls, gotten out of impossible situations (ie: Trapped under a rock cave with no way out), nearly been drowned at least twice, even escaped from jail. (Take particular note of the time a boulder falls on James and sends him falling into the ravine, which should have killed him by both falling and being crushed, yet when we next see him he is completely unharmed) Nothing seems to kill them, even during two falls (one in the episode ''Haunter Versus Kadabra'', and the other [[spoiler: in the second movie when they seemingly sacrifice themselves to help Ash save the world]]) that they themselves are sure will be their deaths. The only exception is when Jessie and James get eaten in the movie ''Lucario and the Mystery of Mew''. [[FirstLawOfResurrection Guess what happens next]], especially since the protagonists suffer the same fate.
** It's not just Jessie, James, and Meowth. Mewtwo blows up a lab and [[KilledOffForReal kills the scientists that created him]]. Yet Giovanni survives an explosion of the same magnutide, and quite unharmed as evidenced in the episode in which the explosion is also seen.

* ParentalAbandonment: Possibly — Ash and friends roam the countryside without adult supervision, after all.
** Also, Brock's parents abandoned him and his numerous siblings at least twice. The second known occasion, they ''went on holiday without them'', 'stealing' Brock's Ludicolo in the process.
** Apparently, one of the Japanese producers confirmed that Ash's father is a Pokémon trainer on his own journey, and that there are currently no plans to feature him but he'll show up if the plot needs him.

The anime series based on the ''{{Pokemon}}'' games. Given the success of the games, this series managed to make it to America as part of the marketing push, and, combined with the concurrent American airing of ''DragonBall Z'', helped keep the new wave of Western anime adaptations (which started after ''PowerRangers'') going.

It features the tale of Ash Ketchum and his pals (who change every so often), as well as the perennially ubiquitous Team Rocket, who attempt to steal Pikachu or another rare Pokémon/item [[OnceAnEpisode nearly every episode]] and are, with even greater frequency, sent flying sky-high with the CatchPhrase "Looks like Team Rocket's blasting off again! [[ATwinkleInTheSky *Ding!*]]" (at least until Team Rocket TookALevelInBadass in ''Black and White'').

** Box of Danger's ''[[{{Ptitle98mu2pb1}} Pokémon The Abridged Series]]''
** [=1KidsEntertainment=]'s ''PokemonTheBridgedSeries''
* AcidTripDimension: In one of the episodes featuring Deoxys, it/[[ShesAManInJapan she]] creates one of these to escape the pain of the meteorite that brought Deoxys there in the first place.
* AnimationBump: Several battles are much better animated than others. If you see Masaaki Iwane as the animation director, expect a damn good looking episode.

This is also unique for being the first time Ash has had two confirmed female team members. [[spoiler: His Scraggy and Swadloon have also been confirmed male.]]
* {{Americanitis}}: Onigiri have been called numerous things when [[FourKidsEntertainment 4Kids]] had the rights to the show, including donuts, eclairs, popcorn balls, sandwiches (which was painted over during the ''Advanced Battle''-era episodes), and surprisingly, in one Kanto-era episode, rice balls.
** The only reason that episode referred to onigiri as rice balls is that Brock was actually shown making them on-screen, so they couldn't really call them something else. Thankfully, now that [=PokémonUSA=] is dubbing it instead of 4Kids, onigiri is consistently referred to correctly as rice balls.
* AnimeFirst: Okay, Video Games First, but the anime did come before the manga it bears the most similarity to; not always the case in the other manga continuities, however.
** Played straight in the US. The anime started 23 days before ''Red'' and ''Blue'' were released in the US.
** And 22 days for ''Pokémon: Black and White''.
* TheAnimeOfTheGame: Probably the most successful adaptation of a game to another media.
* AntiClimax: Remember Harrison's Blaziken? Gave us one of the most intense fights in the entire series? Yeah, a Sceptile and a Swampert in the Hoenn League? Both knocked out pretty early in their respective battles, and not even by Ash's strongest Pokémon. Sceptile was knocked out in a BeamOWar with Ash's Glalie, and Morrison's Swampert was knocked out in a Focus Punch/Crabhammer CrossCounter with Ash's Corphish.
* AIIsACrapshoot
* AlienGeometries: The Reverse World.
* ArtEvolution: Kind of a given since the show has [[LongRunners probably outlasted]] much of its original art staff. Specifically, compare Pikachu in [[http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/thumb/b/ba/Pikachu_loves_ketchup.png/225px-Pikachu_loves_ketchup.png this]] picture to [[http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/thumb/7/71/PikachuDP.png/180px-PikachuDP.png today]] -- he's lost some baby fat and gained a neck. Ash went through it a bit, too. He's a bit taller now.
** This happened in the games, too.
** You don't even need to look that far. Just compare the [[GratuitousJapanese Dare Da?]] from the [[http://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/comparisons/general/dare_da.jpg first episode]] to that of the [[http://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/comparisons/kanto/ep039_eyecatchj.jpg thirty ninth.]]
* AscendedExtra: In the original video games, Misty, Brock, Cilan and Iris are merely Gym Leaders that you [[BossBattle only encounter once to battle against]]. Here they become main characters.
* BadExportForYou: The first eight movies have yet to see a widescreen home video release Stateside.
** And to an extent, the home video release of Movie 5, since it had a distracting bluish tint throughout that wasn't present in the theatrical version.
* [[BannedInChina Banned In Sweden]]: Briefly so, under a law that banned [[MerchandiseDriven television advertisements targeted at children]].

* BecauseDestinySaysSo
* BigDamnMovie: When legendary Pokémon get involved, the fate of the world is often at stake.
** Complete with at least one DisneyDeath! That is, unless they're KilledOffForReal (see below).
* BlindingBangs: The ghost-girl in "''Ghoul Daze!''"
* BuxomIsBetter: While the show is tamer about it than Toshiro Ono's manga, the Pokémon anime did have some fun with this trope. Namely on how there have been female one-shot characters that can be considered to be an example of this trope (of course [[http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/6167/superhotprima3.jpg Prima/Lorelei of the Elite Four]] and [[http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/7924/1184041011706.png Professor Ivy]] are the most infamously known examples). While fairly tame compared to the aforementioned two, even some of the more known established characters like Jessie and Cassidy from Team Rocket have had their moments with this as well. May is also considered to be an odd example of this as she is supposed to be a ten year old but has the body of at least a young teenager.
* CallingYourAttacks: A variation; the calls are commands by a trainer for the Pokémon to execute a specific technique/attack, as the Pokémon can use them without human intervention.
* ChainOfPeople

* ChristmasEpisode: Though it was skipped in international releases due to Jynx, technically, "''Holiday Hi-Jynx!''" was a Christmas episode.
* CookingDuel: In "''Hail to the Chef''", Rhoda and Rhonda face off against each other with their Mr. Mime and Sneasel, respectively, to see who's the best.
* ComplacentGamingSyndrome: InUniverse example: Ash is more resistant to this phenomenon, but his friends, his rivals, and other recurring characters generally stick to their latest captured or evolved 'mon for combat purposes. In fact, if a recurring trainer battles with a 'mon that hasn't been seen in a while and doesn't cite a specific tactical reason (and sometimes when they do), there's a good chance that it's going to [[MidSeasonUpgrade evolve]] (if it can evolve) or [[PutOnABus leave for one reason or another]] (if it can't evolve).
* ConspicuousCGI: Especially in some of the movies.
* ContinuityCameo: Brendan, [[PocketMonsters Isamu Akai]], Lucas and Silver.
* ContinuityCavalcade: This [[http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/3474/bw001ashroomdp.jpg scene]] from the first episode of ''Black and White''.
* ContinuityNod: In "''A Lean Mean Team Rocket Machine''", Jessie, James and Meowth perform their original motto from the original series.
** There were also two in "''Lost Leader Strategy''" to the eighth movie. Ash recognizes Aura Spheres, and Jessie tries to tempt [[CuteBruiser Maylene's]] Lucario with chocolate.
** In "''Pika and Goliath''", Ash pulls out the Thunderstone he got ''waaay'' back in ''Electric Shock Showdown'', after Pikachu was again hospitalized from the beating a Raichu gave it, making the former a sequel of sorts to the latter.
** There have also been a couple of nods to Ash's climbing prowess (which was first pointed out in ''Pokemon 4 Ever'' IRCC) that aren't commented on. One was in ''Lucario and the Mystery of Mew'' and the other in ''Enter Iris and Axew''
* CoolShades: The Sandile ([[spoiler:later Krokorok]]) in ''Black and White'' has these.
* CooldownHug: Several examples.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Marilyn is a girl that goes gaga over any Pokémon she says is cute, though not as bad as Gardenia with Grass Pokémon. So anybody watching the episode would've [[http://serebii.net/anime/pictures/shinou/593ps4.shtml never guessed that she's]] [[http://serebii.net/anime/pictures/shinou/593ps11.shtml good in Pokémon battles.]]

* CrossCounter: Used in quite a few match-ups between Pokémon, but though the episode "''Pasta La Vista''" was set up for one, Team Rocket interrupted before the two fighting Pokémon could hit each other.
* CulturalTranslation: Infamously, riceballs as "donuts"; apparently caused enough fuss that later examples referred to them as riceballs.
** Not until PUSA took over, that is. Until then, 4Kids [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjphanrGEKQ would only get worse.]]
* CurbStompBattle: [[spoiler:Paul challenges Pyramid King Brandon to a battle. The majority of Paul's Pokémon are knocked out in two hits by Brandon's three Regis.]]

* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Quite a few characters, be them lifted from the games or anime-original characters.
** Jasmine has been retconned to have brown eyes, like her game counterpart.
* CuteBruiser: Any cutesy Pokémon with fight in them may count.
* CutLexLuthorACheck
* DarkerAndEdgier: Arguably, the ''Diamond & Pearl'' series as a whole. It still has its heartwarming and comedic moments, but compared to the other seasons it's surprisingly serious. We have Dawn the StepfordSmiler, Paul, the JerkAss rival who forces his Pokémon into TrainingFromHell and wasn't comedic or friendly in the least bit, the ruthless Pokémon Hunter J who actually tries to ''kill'' Ash instead of just getting him out of the way, not-so-subtle Pokémon abuse, actual injuries on more than one occasion, etc. Team Galactic's arc counts as well. There's the OmnicidalManiac Cyrus, who's not even loyal to his own people (see YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness). Plus Brock (a ''good guy'') fighting dirty (namely, his Croagunk attacking Toxicroak before it even fully emerges from its Poké Ball...).
** Usually, Pokémon using their attacks on people is done for comedy, with Team Rocket as the victims. Not so here, as the Galactics are not hesitant to sic their {{mons}} on people (including OlympusMons, in the case of Cyrus). Even Cynthia, ''another good guy'', does this. Her Garchomp KO's Jupiter's Skuntank and prevents Jupiter from calling out another Pokémon by [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/GarchompVsJupiter2_7371.jpg holding its claws to her throat]] in a threatening fashion. We're pretty sure that being held at bay by a shark-dragon-thing that's bigger than they are would take the fight out of anyone.
** ''Black and White'' is looking to be even darker than ''Diamond & Pearl''; one of the biggest flags is [[spoiler:Team Rocket actually doing their job well]] which so far looks genuinely threatening and ominous, and if it does [[WellIntentionedExtremist go into]] [[AnimalWrongsGroup the]] [[AbusiveParents game's]] [[CompleteMonster plot...]]
*** Episodes 23 and 24 of ''Black and White'' features [[spoiler: the debut of Team Plasma and notably, Giovanni ''himself'' traveling to Unova.]] Uh oh...
* DarkHorseVictory: no main character or primary rival has ever won a major TournamentArc. However, the series soon began to subvert this, starting with Robert of the Hoenn Grand Festival. Even then, all the other named characters to win tournaments were still minor characters at best, and were only introduced during that arc (Robert was a slight exception, having already been introduced in the second Contest to be featured in the anime). So far, the only true exception to this is [[spoiler:Zoey, Dawn's main rival, who wins the Sinnoh Grand Festival.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: Pick any Dark or Ghost Pokémon. "''Houndoom's Special Delivery''" is one of the best examples.
* {{Darwinist}}
* DeadlyDoctor: The one doctor from the Indigo saga who fought Team Rocket armed with nothing but a [[BadassLabcoat labcoat full of scalpels]]. Also, [[InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals Nurse Joy]] and Chansey on occasion. One time they beat the tar out of Corphish, then immediately wheeled it into the hospital on a stretcher.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: The Elite Four, as well as several other characters.
* DemotedToExtra: Most of the games' male playable characters, though notably subverted by Jimmy (who, along with Marina, had a special to himself) and Pokémon Rangers Solana, Kellyn, and Ben, who joined the group for two two-part episodes (one episode for Ben) and a special promoting the first game.
** Barry, the rival from the fourth generation, got pretty good screentime as well; enough to be Ash's secondary rival in DP, behind Paul.
* DidNotDoTheResearch: The long journey to Vermillion City takes place (in part at least) on Route 24, according to Ash. Route 24 goes the opposite direction from Vermillion City in the game (though they do meet Bill two episodes later...).
* DisneyDeath[=/=]NearDeathExperience: Nearly every single movie has a Pokémon die and come back to life, or barely avoid dying in the first place.
* DuelingShows: With ''{{Digimon}}''.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: Compare the Kanto league saga, which only took around 80 episodes to complete, to later game-based league sagas. For one, none of the gym leaders of the Kanto League dressed like their game counterparts.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Plenty in the leadup to each new generation, both in the series and the movies.
** Second: Ho-Oh (''two and a half years'' before appearing in the games), Togepi, Marill, Snubbull, Donphan, Elekid, Ledyba, Slowking, Hoothoot, Lugia
** Third: Azurill, Kecleon, Wailmer, Latias and Latios, Blaziken
** Fourth: Munchlax, Lucario, Weavile, Bonsly, Mime Jr., Chatot, Buizel, Mantyke, Manaphy, Electivire
** Fifth: Zoroark, Zorua
* EldritchAbomination: Toned down some from the games' Pokedex descriptions, but some of the Pokémon remain delightfully creepy. Giratina is the biggest example, especially when it's in the Reverse World.
* ElementalRockPaperScissors
* EnterEponymous: "''Enter Galactic''" in the dub (though this title was meant to be a pun on the term 'intergalactic'), multiple examples in the Japanese version.
* EveryoneChasingYou
* [=~Everything's Better With Sparkles~=]: In a Contest battle, anything + everything = sparkles.
* EvilRedheads: Jessie and Cassidy of Team Rocket, Shelly of Team Aqua, and Mars of Team Galactic.
* EvilVersusEvil: Teams Magma and Aqua [[{{ptitlem5qiqwn8}} as]] [[{{ptitled53fvupl}} always]], and, if the latest trailers are anything to go by, Teams Rocket and Plasma will be heading this way as well.
* EvolvingCredits: Done rather interestingly with the first ''Black and White'' opening, where, in the opening for the first episode, everything, including all the Pokémon, are in black and white, except for Pikachu who shows up fully colored. In the second episode's opening, as Pikachu passes the Pokémon, any that were seen in the previous episode start filling in with color to show who's been seen so far. This was thrown aside in the dub.
* ExecutiveMeddling: After the Seizure Incident, the animators were forced to make a new episode, "''Pikachu's Goodbye''", but fortunately, it ended up as one of the most memorable episodes of the series.
* ExpositionDiagram: Several examples.
* ExtraStrengthMasquerade: At the end of "''Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon''" Officer Jenny convinces everyone that the attack was all a dream they had after Jigglypuff put them to sleep. Yeah, sure, Jenny. Everyone just happened to dream about the same thing at the same time, and they all had this dream BEFORE the thing that caused them to fall asleep even showed up.
* FaceDoodling: Jigglypuff does this after its audience falls asleep performing its song.
* {{Facefault}}: Ash and the gang do this sometimes. Team Rocket does it more often, however.
* FailedAttemptAtDrama: "''Showdown in Dark City''"
* [=~Fail O'Suckyname~=]: Ash Ketchup, Tom Ato, Ann Chovi and Caesar Salad.
* FailureIsTheOnlyOption
* FantasyKitchenSink: At various points we've had psychics, [[KiAttacks aura]], ghosts, HumongousMecha, Magic (albeit very little), HardLight Holograms, at least one superhero (albeit a aged {{Batman}} parody), ToonPhysics, WeirdScience, Cloning, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and a talking cat]]. And that's just the stuff that doesn't apply to the Pokémon themselves.
* FightingSeries
* {{Filler}}: Throughout every season, but more noticeable after Kanto. Possibly justified, as there's an obligation to introduce every single Pokémon at least once. It IS a "-mon" show, after all. Since each new generation introduces at least a hundred new Pokémon, fillers are pretty much inevitable.
* FiveManBand: Arguably present in the original, but more pronounced in later seasons.
** In the original series:
*** TheHero: Ash
*** TheLancer: Pikachu
*** TheBigGuy: Misty
*** TheSmartGuy: Brock
*** TheChick: Togepi
** In Advanced Generation:
*** TheHero: Ash
*** TheLancer: Pikachu
*** TheBigGuy: Brock
*** TagalongKid: Max (also shares TheSmartGuy role with Brock)
*** TheChick: May
** In Diamond and Pearl:
*** TheHero: Ash
*** TheLancer: Pikachu
*** TheBigGuy: Piplup
*** TheSmartGuy: Brock
*** TheChick: Dawn
*** SixthRanger: Croagunk
** To a lesser degree, in Best Wishes:
*** TheHero: Ash
*** TheLancer: Pikachu
*** TheBigGuy: Iris
*** TheSmartGuy: Cilan
*** TheChick: Axew
** In Advanced Generation and Diamond and Pearl, Ash's and Dawn's ''Pokemon'', as well as Ash's main Pokemon from Kanto, could form their ''own'' respective [[FiveManBand Five Man Bands]]:
** Ash and his main Kanto Pokemon:
*** TheHero: Ash
*** TheLancer: Pikachu
*** TheBigGuy: Charizard
*** TheSmartGuy: Bulbasaur
*** TheChick: Squirtle
** Ash's Hoenn Pokemon:
*** TheHero: Pikachu
*** TheLancer: Sceptile
*** TheBigGuy: Swellow
*** TheSmartGuy: Corphish
*** TheChick: Torkoal
*** SixthRanger: Glalie (Donphan in Battle Frontier)
** Ash's Sinnoh Pokemon:
*** TheHero: Infernape
*** TheLancer: Buizel
*** TheBigGuy: Torterra
*** TheSmartGuy: Staraptor
*** TheChick: Gliscor
*** SixthRanger: Gible
** Dawn's Pokemon:
*** TheHero: Piplup
*** TheLancer: Buneary
*** TheBigGuy: Mamoswine
*** TheSmartGuy: Pachirisu
*** TheChick: Quilavia
*** SixthRanger[=/=]TeamMom: Togekiss
* FluffyFashionFeathers: A few feather boas are worn, one by a Socialite on the St. Anne, and one by Jessie in her getting rich fantasies.
* FreeRangeChildren: No one finds it disconcerting that ten-year olds run about the world by themselves.
** That's what they do in the world of Pokémon. At the beginning of the anime series, Brock is at least 15 years old.
* FunSize: Cute little Pokémon are even cuter in the anime...
* GagBoobs: While Ash did get some MarshmallowHell moments in the series, the true case of this actually came in this fairly infamous Japanese made picture [[http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/9484/pokemonbustsizes9wu.png here.]]
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: [[Radar/{{Ptitlei015gc004kw4}} Has its own page.]]
* GratuitousEnglish: Oh so very much. And the Japanese opening themes amount to little more than this and boatloads of random Pokémon terms with a catchy tune. Case in point: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weMviilwDGg&feature=related Everyday is spelled evierdai]] Lyrics are [[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/The_Greatest_-_Everyday! here]].
** The season based off of Black/White is called ''Best Wishes'' in Japan.
* GreenAesop: Almost unique for both the series and the trope in that it ''doesn't'' drop the proverbial anvil. Beyond the obvious demonizing of poachers and animal abusers, it really just provides an example of humanity gone right. Animal rights are rarely an issue (especially because TheDogBitesBack with a ''vengeance'' if you kick one too hard). It's rare that smog from vehicles is even seen despite the existence of personal automobiles and heavy air transport, the skies are perennially clear and blue even over the largest metropolises, and huge tracts of land go free of harm. Even when pollution is referenced (outside of the Koffing and Grimer families), it's never actually seen, or else is promptly cleaned up. And no one says a word. ''Because no one has to.''
* {{Hammerspace}}
* HarmlessElectrocution: Any character that has been in contact with electric Pokémon, particularly Pikachu has succumbed to this with no long-term damage, especially Ash and Team Rocket.
* HarmlessFreezing: Several examples.
* HexagonalSpeechBalloon
* HurricaneOfPuns: The 4Kids dub did this frequently, especially in the early episodes of Season 1.
** They seemed to be either doing it less or stopping altogether as of the ''Best Wishes'' series.
* IdenticalStranger: Several:
** Ash has two clones running around. Both were excuses for MarshmallowHell by their mothers.
** Jessie and James's unwanted-fiancee Jessiebelle.
** Team Righteous, a team from an old TV show that happen to look like Team Rocket.
** Max's clone is also called Max.
** Harley's grudge against May goes back to another girl he knew that happens to look like her.
*** Then again, he may have just been lying to earn Jessie's sympathy.
** Princess Salvia, TheOjou version of Dawn.
* IdiotBall: Though the IdiotBall gets passed around at will, Ash seems to be constantly carrying it at different intervals in the series. Check the [[IdiotBall entry]] for all of the examples.
* [=~I'm Not A Doctor But I Play One On TV~=]: Parodied in the first episode that introduced Mrs. Ketchum's Mr. Mime.
* InstantAwesomeJustAddNinja: "''The Ninja Poké-Showdown''" and "''From Cradle to Save''".
* InstantCostumeChange
* InterspeciesRomance: Tropius/Meganium, Golduck/Azumarill, Bulbasaur/Gloom etc. Breeding group is also not important (Lombre/Mawile. Lombre is in the Water 1 and Plant groups, while Mawile is in the Ground and Fairy. Marril/Elekid (A Water 1 and Ground and a No Eggs who evolves into one in the Humanshape)). There are also some Human/Pokémon examples (Ash/Pikachu, Ash/Bayleef, Ash/Aipom, Ash/Latias, Cassandra/Meowth, Harley's Cacturn/Jessie). Most of the love is one sided and on the human/Pokémon it's always on the Pokémon's side, except for [[TooKinkyToTorture Gardenia and her fetish]].
* {{Kaiju}}: Legendary Pokémon are anywhere from "extra-large" to "titanic" in size, especially if it's a more "beastly" Legendary (Groudon, Rayquaza, Giratina). Non-Legendary examples include the cliff-sized Dragonite in "''Mystery at the Lighthouse''" and the skyscraper-tall Tentacruel in "''Tentacool and Tentacruel''".
* LawyerFriendlyCameo: don't [[http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/7/7c/Sakura_and_Tomoyo_DP077.jpg these two]] [[CardcaptorSakura look familiar?]]
* LeanAndMean: Jessie, Jupiter and Saturn.
* LemonyNarrator: Not during the main anime so much, but he does during ''Pokémon Chronicles'' and such.
* LighterAndSofter: The first episode is a bit darker come to think of it, given that the antagonists, the flock of Spearow, are trying to KILL Ash and Pikachu. Pikachu presumably destroys them in the end (Look at the state of Misty's bike after that blast) and they are replaced as antagonists by the more comedic Team Rocket from the second episode on, whose intent is to steal Pikachu.
* LighthousePoint: Episode 13: "''Mystery at the Lighthouse''".
* LimitedWardrobe: Although [[{{Nakama}} Ash & co.]] usually get new outfits for each new journey.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: And that's just the ''human'' cast, excluding the hundreds of one-shots.
* LongRunners: Assuming you watched 24 hours a day, it would take you (as of January 2010) ''8 days'' to watch every episode. And that's not counting commercials or the 13 (soon to be [[OneGameForThePriceOfTwo 15]]) movies.
* LongSpeechTeaTime: other than the Team Rocket motto:
** In an early episode, Meowth makes a threatening monologue towards Pikachu, then finds that his fellow Team Rocket Pokémon (Koffing and Ekans) are ignoring him and having a tea break.
** In an very early episode, A battle comes down to Ash's Metapod (coccons capable only of hardening themselves to defend from attacks) and his opponent's. In the middle of this stalemate, the camera cuts to [[{{Fanservice}} Misty in a bathing suit]] getting some sun. Those must have been some really dedicated trainers to not notice ''a girl changing clothes right next to them''.
* MacGuffin: The infamous GS Ball; also badges and ribbons to some extent.
* MadeOfIron: Almost every named human character, especially Ash.
* MagicalComputer: Pokédexes. Pretty powerful ones, too, at least for the nineties.
* TheManBehindTheMan: The evil team leaders, i.e. Team Rocket's Giovanni.
* MerchandiseDriven
* MidSeasonUpgrade: New captures, attacks, and evolutions are typically gained throughout a season rather than being localized near the beginning or the end. This is mostly because the ungodly amounts of {{Filler}} act as huge buffers between plot points and wind up distributing them fairly evenly.
* MonsterOfTheWeek
* TheMovie: We're up to thirteen of them as of now. Number 14 has already been announced.
** And there are TWO of them. [[OneGameForThePriceOfTwo One movie for the price of two?]]
* MushroomSamba
* MusicalEpisode: Though not really an episode of the show nor even canonical to it, the stage show ''Pokémon Live!'' would seem to fit in this trope.
** "''Gotta Dance!''", the short before the sixth movie.
* MyNameIsNotDurwood: Butch--Er, Hutch always gets his name mistaken.
-->''"That does it, I am'' changing ''my name."''
** And Professor Number.
-->[[RunningGag *phone rings*]]
-->'''Number''': ''"That's '''Namba!'''"''
** In Max's debut, he kept calling Ash '''Alf''' three times.
* MysteriousParent: Ash's father, obviously. Dawn's too. We don't know either of their dads!
* MythologyGag: The ''[[{{ptitle2gli7wce}} Best Wishes]]'' series has one ''[[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:BW001.png in the first episode]]!''
** Also in the first episode of ''Black and White'': the plane Ash takes to Unova is flight number [[{{Characters/Ptitleysn5vf4o}} 151]].
** ''Black and White'' also has episode 6's classic "ding-ding-ding-a-ding!" chime when healing Pokémon in the games.
** In [=DP094=], "''Doc Brock''", a Zapdos makes a quick cameo. In ''[[{{Ptitle6ta6tjtj}} Pokémon Platinum]]'', Zapdos can be found roaming Sinnoh in the post-Elite Four storyline. Notably, this was the first episode to air in Japan after the release of ''Platinum.''
*** Repeated in [=DP142=], "''Where No Togepi Has Gone Before''", where the evil KillerRabbit Togepi knows Extrasensory. In Japan, this was the last episocde to air before the release of ''[[{{Ptitleh2xwpnnp}} Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver]]''. In those games, guess which move Togepi can use for the first time?
** In "''Ya See we Want an Evolution!''", the organization dedicated to showing the strength of Pokémon without evolving them is called the "B-Button League", referring to the actual ''game mechanic'' used for the very same purpose.
* NatureSpirit: Some Pokémon are portrayed as these, particularly Celebi.
* NeverSayDie: Dub only, naturally. Most notably, near the beginning of the series, when the Squirtle Squad kidnaps Misty -- they threaten to kill her in the Japanese version, and in the dub they threaten to [[CoolAndUnusualPunishment dye her hair purple]].
** This is actually averted in many instances (mostly the movies), even while FourKidsEntertainment was handling it. For example, ''[=~Pokémon 4Ever~=]'' actually has Sammy say that Celebi was going to die (though it's still softened a bit -- in the original, it's already dead by that point). They also didn't make any attempt to cover up [[spoiler:Latios's]] death in ''[=~Pokémon Heroes~=]'' or Lucario and Sir Aaron's deaths in ''[=~Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew~=]''.
* NinjaLog: Angela uses this twice in "''From Cradle to Save''", once to escape from Brock and again to escape from Team Rocket.
* NoExportForYou: The UK has never got DVD releases of ANY of the main series and three movies (the Deoxys, Lucario and Manaphy ones) were never released there either (though, perhaps oddly, it DID get ''Pokémon Chronicles'').
** In the USA, ''Pokémon Chronicles'' still hasn't been released on DVD yet.
*** Neither have boxsets for the Johto seasons.
**** Except for ''Master Quest'', but those are out of print for a few years now (they were last released in 2005).
** In the UK, a deal HAD been struck up with Network DVD (A label that usually sells [=DVDs=] of old British shows) to release the series, but the only DVD they released for it was The Rise of Darkrai. Hell, the site even at one point HAD a Pokémon section, but that didn't last.
** NoExportForYou might FINALLY be averted for the UK as Universal will be releasing ''Zoroark: Master of Illusions'' on DVD late April. If they'll distribute the anime DVD releases like they do in France is unknown at this point, but right now it's a start.
* NoHuggingNoKissing
* NoSenseOfDirection: The Spiky-eared Pichu, as revealed in the fourth DP ending.
** Dawn is pretty bad with directions herself and her Piplup is even worse.
** It's not just Dawn. Ash and friends get lost a ''lot''.
* {{Novelization}}: Certain anime episodes (some books even compile several episodes within its pages) and at least two of the movies (some of the later movies have been released in manga format).
* OddlySmallOrganization: We don't really see much of Team Rocket, though it's occasionally implied that they're bigger.
* OddlyNamedSequel: The dub changes names every season except for between the first two, so whereas the original Japanese series has ''Pocket Monsters'' (seasons 1-5), ''Pocket Monsters Advanced Generation'' (seasons 6-9), ''Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl'' (seasons 10-13), and ''Pocket Monsters Best Wishes!'' (seasons 14+) , the dub has ''Pokémon'' (seasons 1-2), ''Pokémon: The Johto Journeys'' (season 3), ''Pokémon Johto League Champions'' (season 4), ''Pokémon Master Quest'' (season 5), ''Pokémon Advanced'' (season 6), ''Pokémon Advanced Challenge'' (season 7), ''Pokémon Advanced Battle'' (season 8), ''Pokémon Battle Frontier'' (season 9), ''Pokémon Diamond and Pearl'' (season 10), ''Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: Battle Dimension'' (season 11), ''Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: Galactic Battles'' (season 12), ''Pokémon Diamond and Pearl: Sinnoh League Victors'' (season 13), and ''Pokémon Black and White'' (season 14).
** The DVD releases have remedied the problem for the first two seasons: season 1 is now "Indigo League" and season 2 is now "Adventures on the Orange Islands."
** A true OddlyNamedSequel has arrived for the adaptation of ''PokemonBlackAndWhite''. It is entitled ''Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes'' in Japan.
* OffModel: As often as we have the AnimationBump, there's plenty of instances of this too. ''Black and White'' seems to be cutting back on it however.
* OldShame: "''Electric Soldier Porygon''"
* OminousFog: Results in a ShipTease with holding hands.
* [[OneGameForThePriceOfTwo One Movie For The Price Of Two]]: The Victini movie is going to be split into two -- one for Reshiram and one for Zekrom.
* {{Ondo}}: Do-do-dogaasu, Do-doga-do!
* OneSceneWonder: The Pokémon Anime is highly well known for having memorable appealing characters despite only being in one episode (if not barely more) regardless of whether if they are from the games or not. Many of these characters can be seen as far more appealing that the main cast (which in some cases is not hard to do) and while sometimes is justified why we never see them again, other times it's not.
* OnlyOneName: to the point where it's ''much'' easier to list characters that have both a known given name and surname than to list ones that have only one name known (That is: Samuel and Gary Oak, Amber Fuji, Steven Stone, the Winstrates and Ash and his mom in the dub.)
* TheOtherDarrin: The entire American voice cast (with a few exceptions among the recurring cast) is changed three-quarters of the way through Advance Generation.
** In-universe, there was an episode where Bonsly and Mime Jr. are mistaken for actors and dropped into a movie in place of the real ones. [[DittoAliens Sure they look kinda the same to us, but one imagines any Pokémon viewers would tell instantly]] and have this reaction.
* OverlyLongGag: Professor Westwood V's (a colleague of Professor Oak in "''The Evolution Solution''") constant apologies to his ancestors, [[InexplicablyIdenticalIndividuals Westwood I-IV]].
** In the same episode, Misty's Psyduck meets Westwood's Slowpoke.
* [[OvertookTheManga Overtook The Games]]: The Indigo League conference had ended early in 1999, eight months before ''Gold'' and ''Silver'''s release. As a result, for the next few months there was an anime-exclusive region known as the Orange Islands.
** WordOfGod confirms that ''Black and White'' will be much shorter in comparison. [[AvertedTrope It shows when Ash has his first badge by episode 6]], compared to episode 15 in the ''Diamond and Pearl'' series.
* PaperFanOfDoom
* ParentService: For the ladies this show does have its fair share of Bishounen (in which James is one of the most known examples) and one could always wonder why Meowth has deranged fantasies about Giovanni. And for the guys: well, see HotMom and BuxomIsBetter for more details.
* PartyInMyPocket: They're called "Pocket Monsters" for a reason.
* [[TalkingIsAFreeAction Pokédex Is a Free Action]]: No matter whether it's a friendly encounter with a Pidgey or they're being chased down by an angry wild Ursaring, no Pokémon ever attacks while a trainer is using their Pokédex. Ever. Well…except for that one filler which started off with a '''very''' random Giratina attack (caused by a Murkrow's illusion).
* PowderTrail: "''Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon''", coupled with IndyEscape...sort of.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: All Pokémon companions.
* PowerTrio
** Id: Ash
** Superego: Misty (Original Series), May (Advanced Generation Series), Dawn (Diamond and Pearl Series)
** Ego: Brock (Kanto, Johto through Sinnoh), Tracey (Orange Islands arc)
* [=~The President's Daughter~=]
* ProductPlacement: "Ya See we Want an Evolution!''" has Meowth activate one of Team Rocket's mechas with a [[{{Wii}} Wiimote]].
* PromotedFanboy: Chris "Kirbopher" Niosi as Khoury.
* PunBasedTitle: The American episode titles, sometimes going to "gems" such as "''Doin' What Comes Natu-rally''" and "''Smells Like Team Spirit''". Japan sometimes fall to this ("''Do Coil[[hottip:*:Magnemite]] Dream of Electric Mice!?''")
** Partially stopped as of ''Black and White''.
* PunnyName: ''Best Wishes'' is both initialized "BW" (Black and White), and in Japanese "Wishes" would be pronounced very similar to "Isshu", the Japanese name of Unova, the region the series is set.
* PunchClockVillain
* PutOnABus: The writers were really bad about this in the first two sagas. They stopped for a while but due to the aforementioned script recycling they did some of this in the current DP saga, most obviously with Ambipom. Seriously, ''ping pong??''
** Brock was put on one again at the end of DP, though not literally. A later special checks up on his progress.
** And despite going through the Kanto region again for the ''Battle Frontier'' season, ''not a single one'' of the {{characters of the day}} from the first season ever showed up or even got so much as a mention or cameo.
* [[RapidFireFisticuffs Rapid Fire]] FingerPokeOfDoom: Using a pair of robotic arms, Meowth does this to Staraptor in DP 160, which doubles as a ShoutOut to ''FistOfTheNorthStar''.
** Most of the [[HumongousMecha mechas]] Team Rocket uses have some form of this.
* [[RavensAndCrows Ravens And Murkrows]]
* ReallyDeadMontage: Happens a few times, though obviously more often involving characters leaving the party than actually dying. The one time death was threatened and seemingly sealed with one of these, the affected character ([[spoiler:Ash's Bulbasaur, in the episode "''Bulbasaur, the Ambassador''"]]) turned out not to be dead after all (though as it happened said character left the group that episode anyway).
* RhymesOnADime: One segment in "2.B.A. Master":
-->So you've reached the Plateau, but not yet a hero. \\
Are you ready to meet and defeat...the Elite?\\
Can I expect survival...against your rival?
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: Too many to list.
* TheRival: Hey, the show wouldn't be fun without some conflict, right? And rivals are perfect for that! Ash has Gary and Paul, May has Drew and Harley, and Dawn has Zoey and Kenny (as well as Jessilina)...and those are just the rivals that would appear regularly at some point in the show's history...
** As of ''Black and White'', Ash now has Trip and Bianca.
* RunningGag: Ash owes a bike to each of the first three female leads [[MyFriendsAndZoidberg and Barry]] [[hottip:*:the last one was caused by Gible, not Pikachu]]. In ''Black and White'', Iris didn't have a bike, so Pikachu shocked ''her'' instead! (because she was squeezing him too hard when [[CutenessProximity fawning over how cute he was]])
** For Misty, it's a RunningGag in of itself for her to remind Ash of his "debt" regarding her bike, only for Ash to change the subject or run away from her altogether. One time, ''she'' was the one who forgot!
** And of course, Brock flirting with the girl characters of the day, to be stopped by Misty/Max/May (in only one case, though)/his Bonsly/his Croagunk/whoever else may be around (except for Ash).
** Brock has a minor one, eclipsed by the gag above, wherein he has to perform his ''Takeshi's Paradise'' schtick in front of a large audience while Ash and co. try to foil Team Rocket's plans. It always starts off well, until it lasted too long and he had to be booed off the stage. On different occasions, he even asked his Lombre and Ash's Corphish to help out.
** From the movies, Brock's "[[StalkerWithACrush Guidebook to Girls]]".
** Gible's Draco Meteor always hitting Piplup, and never the intended target. It's gotten to the point where Piplup flees in terror when Gible begins charging the attack up. Not that it helps much, as it's been seen to home in on Piplup's location. In some instances, it's even exploited just to find him.
** Another gag that goes [[OnceASeason Once a Series]]: Ash and crossdressing.
** From the Sinnoh saga, RecurringExtra [[IntrepidReporter Rhonda]] '''always''' gets hit on the head with her crew's microphone.
* RunTheGauntlet: The Orange Crew and the Frontier Brains are non-villainous versions of this. While League tournaments involve hundreds of trainers, a participant in either of these special "leagues" only ever battles each of the Orange Gym Leaders or Frontier Brains one at a time.
* SayMyName: In "''The Needs of the Three''": "Azelf!" "Mesprit!" "Uxie!"
* SceneryPorn: Every single movie has at least one positively epic set piece in full ConspicuousCG. And they are ''gorgeous''.
** You're also likely to see that set piece get absolutely [[SceneryGorn trashed]] at some point when the local OlympusMons get pissed.
** The movies also tend to open with gratuitous, sweeping shots of wild Pokémon. These are also typically gorgeous.
** The entire three part mini arc with the resolution of Team Galactic, from Hunter J's ship getting sucked up with water to the Spear Pillar...whoa. Just whoa.
** The regular series isn't too bad, either. The backgrounds have gotten a ''lot'' better: just compare the forests as seen in the Orange Islands arc to those in ''Black and White''. The trees, riverbeds, and cliffsides are more meticulously painted, and so do some of the city areas.
* SchizoTech: You have Pokéballs that transmute living beings to light and store them in containers, which are used and sold in rural forest and mountain towns with little transportation.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: A few of the Gym Leaders do this, which makes sense as their job is to test trainers in a multitude of ways..
* SeriousBusiness: The fourth episode of the anime has a Bug Catcher type Pokémon trainer who dresses and acts like a ''samurai'', treating his bug Pokémon catching profession as seriously as a samurai would treat his duties.
* SevenYearRule: In one Black/White episode there's a group of Sandiles whose leader is distinguished by wearing sunglases, just like the Squirtle Squad back in the original series.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Happened quite a bit to Ash and Misty.
** In the Hoenn saga, a couple starts shipping Ash and May, and Team Rocket.
** And in D&P, Dawn is asked by Lyra if Ash is her boyfriend, and denies it.
** In the Latin American dub, Deoxys stands out as the only legendary Pokémon referred to by the characters with [[PronounTrouble female pronouns]].
* ShipTease: Of course, people tend to take them at face value.
* ShipperOnDeck: Harley supports May and Drew, a couple from a Hoenn episode believed May and Ash were together, and Lyra is absolutely ''determined'' to get Dawn and Ash to pair up. YourMileageMayVary on that though since she also tried to hook up Dawn and Khoury too
** When a love-oriented episode crops up, you can pretty much expect Ash's female companion (and on a few occasions, Brock) to try to fix whatever problems the lovers have, making any of them fit squarely into this trope as well.
* ShoutOut: Ash and his rival Gary's Japanese names, Satoshi and Shigeru, are taken from Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokémon, and ShigeruMiyamoto, Nintendo's famed game designer who mentored Tajiri during Pokémon's creation. There is also Hiroshi {Ritchie}, who is named after then-current Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi.
** Musical shout outs can be found from time to time, usually in episode titles such as "''[[{{Nirvana}} Smells Like Team Spirit]]''" or "''Tears for Fears''". The stealth shout-out award goes to Casey, however, when watching a (losing) baseball game, she says, "[[SimonAndGarfunkel Where have you gone, Cory DiMario?]]"
** Ash's Infernape is largely one big shout-out to Gohan of ''DragonBall Z''.
** Anyone else see simulairities between Ash's Snivy and [[OnePiece another]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3wWcWf2eUc love inducing snake?]]
** Oscar and Andi in "''The Bicker the Better''" to ''RoseOfVersailles''.
* SigilSpam: The stylized Poké Ball emblem appears everywhere.
* SkeletonGovernment: Besides Officer Jennys, there seem to be no form of government at all.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Whether it be Misty, May, Dawn, or Iris, only one girl is allowed in the group at a time. WordOfGod has admitted it's mainly done for FanService purposes.
* SomethingCompletelyDifferent: The ''Pokémon Chronicles'' side series.
* SoundtrackDissonance: The 4th-gen saga did this a few times, playing absurdly epic and dramatic music as the backdrop for [[{{Filler}} chasing Pachirisu around for several minutes]], or [[EpicFail Team Rocket's evolution machine sputtering out repeatedly]].
* SpinOff: The ''Pokémon Mystery Dungeon'' specials, and ''Pokémon Chronicles''.
* SpoilerOpening: The openings are pretty notorious for this. It only got worse when they started making one per year, which means most of the plot points of the next year are spoiled in one go.
** Generally they're pretty good at avoiding this, at least in Japan. When a Pokémon evolves or is captured, it's added to the opening where empty space was before. The dub, however, tends to use visuals form the final version of the Japanese openings, so played straight there.
** Played straight in ''The Greatest - Everyday!'', however. We see Ash with Infernape and Torterra, and Dawn with ''Togekiss''.
** The ''Black and White'' opening soundly averts this. Only Pokémon which have appeared in previous episodes are revealed, and there is no way to tell which Pokémon the main characters will catch.
*** Partly true: No humans appear, so it's impossible to know who will catch what. But, it shows silhouettes ([[BeyondTheImpossible 3D Silhouettes, at that]]) of every Pokémon which will be met while this theme is used, so if you look, you can make them out. [[SubvertedTrope Reshiram is shown in the opening and loses its silhouette effect in the second episode, however, despite not being seen in the anime itself yet.]]
* StarCrossedLovers: The male and female Nidoran from the Orange Islands episode "''Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?''", an obvious ShoutOut to ''RomeoAndJuliet''.
* StockSoundEffects: The last few movies keep using sounds from {{Godzilla}} monsters: Dialga and Palkia use the roars of Rodan, Ghidorah and Godzilla, Giratana has Mothra sounds and the ship of the 11th movie's villain sounds like Megaguirus.
** When one considers that it's Toho Studios (the same company that makes the Godzilla films) that distributes the films...the rest speaks for itself.
** Palkia also has the roar of [[RevengeOfTheSith Boga, Obi-Wan Kenobi's varactyl mount]], in the films and in ''SuperSmashBros Brawl''. Boga is the first part of the roar, with either Heisei King Ghidorah (films) or Godzilla 1954 (''Brawl'') at the end.
* StrictlyFormula: Every episode of Pokémon that isn't a Gym battle or other plot point from the game follows the formula: Meet person of the week or Pokémon of the week, this person/Pokémon will either have a problem or cause someone in Ash's group to see a problem in themselves, Team Rocket will sometimes plot to steal Pikachu and/or Pokémon of the week, Team Rocket unleashes their plan and is defeated in short order, the problem of the week is solved either by Team Rocket's defeat or some unrelated event.
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: In full force, though the most prominent example is Team Rocket vs Aaron; a freaking member of the Elite Four managed to almost lose against Team Rocket).
* SuperEmpowering
* TaughtByExperience: Ash and friends.
* TeamSpirit: The trio of Ash and his friends (quartet in AG).
* ThemeNaming: Every male-female duo in Team Rocket is [[NamedAfterSomebodyFamous named after famous figures]]. (Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, etc.)
** ''Heroes'' gives us a two-girl team - Annie and Oakley, although they are only Team Rocket members in the dub.
* TitleDrop: Cress' farewell to Cilan in [=BW06=] was "''Best Wishes''" in GratuitousEnglish. Inverted in the dub, where the line is kept.
* TooDumbToLive: Although no one has actually died from a stupid mistake in the main show...
* TooSoon: After the recent earthquake in Japan, the Team Rocket vs. Team Plasma episodes were postponed, presumably due to a scene where James destroys a lot of Castelia City with an energy blast. A similar earthquake caused a filler episode of ''AG'' to be completely cancelled.
* TraitorShot: The Teddiursa in episode "''[=UnBEARable=]''" has ''five'' of them.
* TransformationSequence: Pokémon evolution.
* TournamentArc: The point of every region, both the League (called Conference for some reason) and the Grand Festival.
* UnderTheMistletoe: The Christmas Bash CD has a song with the same name as this trope. Misty sings about how she wants it to happen, Ash sings about how he doesn't want to be caught under it. [[ShipTease You know the rest....]]
* TheUnintelligible: Most Pokémon, although many of the human characters understand them just fine; actions speak louder than words, after all.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: During the Sinnoh League, a ''Heatran'' is seen in the background several times as a trainer's Pokémon. Nobody even mentions it. [[spoiler:One would think that it would be a big deal, considering Tobias has at least two [[OlympusMons legendaries]].]]
* VideoPhone: These showed up almost everywhere in the early seasons.
* [=~Wasn't That Fun?~=]: Pretty much every Pokémon movie. Characters arrive at destination, all happy and sunshine for a good 10 minutes, figures out the treat or central plot, danger happens, barely survives the threat, then, live happily ever after for another year.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Takeshi Shudo had story plans for Johto including Celebi being inside the GS ball and finding out more about Ash's father. These ideas were scrapped and we ended up with the show we have now because of it.
* [=~What The Hell, Hero?~=]: During their match in the Hoenn League, Ash has been curbstomping Morrison, easily taking out his Girafarig and his Growlithe with Corphish alone. After Growlithe goes down, Ash gets mad, accusing Morrison of not caring about his Pokémon by not allowing them to do their best. Though this is all because Morrison didn't want to battle Ash in the first place.
* WidgetSeries: While not as over the top as other examples, this show contains a lot of very Japanese elements, such as references to their folklore, especially in earlier episodes. When the producers realised that ''Pokémon'' was a global phenomenon, they deliberately dialed this back.
* WorstWhateverEver: The Japanese title for one episode translates to "''The Worst Togepi Ever!''" Sadly, the English dub changed it to "''Where No Togepi Has Gone Before''".
* [=~Yank The Dog's Chain~=]: in an early [=AG=] episode, Jigglypuff finally meets a Whismur, someone that can listen to its songs without [[RunningGag going to sleep]]...only for Jigglypuff to think Whismur did fall asleep as well[[hottip:*:it was only because Whismur was exhausted]]. [[ChuckCunninghamSyndrome We never see Jiggs again...]]
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: There are a ''lot'' of examples for this.
* ZergRush: In the very first episode, the massive flock of Spearow that assaulted Ash and Pikachu.
