  • That's arguable, considering just how much he was insulted in the dub. As compared to the original, it seemed that most of the cast geniunely didn't like him much of the time there. In the original, this definitely wasn't the case. For example, he and Takeru (usually portrayed antagonistically by the dub and fans alike) were actually much more affable towards each other in the original, occasionally exchanging light-hearted jokes with each other.
  • This troper just thought it made it all the better when he showed that he was easily the most competent and charming of the lot of them. If anything it made the other characters look bad, when they regularly insult the guy who saved their asses more times than I can count.
  • Then again the situation may have been caused by Daisuke himself, as in the original he was generally known for making insensitive, selfish, and stupid comments. Not helping matters was the fact that frequently when he saved the others, it because he had other motives (eg: getting Hikari's attention). The other characters were aware of this fact, and may have been the reason why their general opinion of him was so low. Eventually he did catch a clue and lost most of his selfish attitude.
    • This troper specifically remembers that time when Daisuke, force to chose between his friends who were really Bakemon in disguise, chose to save Hikari only, while he let the rest of his friends be eaten alive by a giant dragon. Sure, they were fake but he still chose to save Hikari over the rest of them (is using sarcasm).
    • Actually, if this troper recalls correctly, that was The Sadistic Choice orchestrated by Digimon Kaiser Ken with dopplegangers of Daisuke's friends. The real ones arrived before he could make any choice.
    • You've got to be kidding. Insensitive, selfish, and stupid comments? Name one instance where he was ever more rash or thick-headed than season one Taichi. In the episode where the Kaiser "captured" the rest of the Chosen Children, it was specifically pointed out that Daisuke refused to pick one to save over the others. In fact, he offered himself as a sacrifice over the rest of the team. Very selfish, that.
    • This troper remembers the episode where Yamato the characters brought up Daisuke's sister in a conversation, and before even asking what she said Daisuke started insulting her. Which to say to least pissed off the other characters. Then there was that time when he wanted Veemon to evolve specifically into an angel type digimon specifically because he wanted Hikari's attention. Which of course led to them getting into trouble.
    • About the Jun thing: When Takeru mentioned meeting her, Daisuke said she probably told bad things about him, which she did (she said he was a jerk). Takeru, of course, being the nice guy he is, denied everything. Daisuke then said Jun doesn't like him, but that's okay, he doesn't really like her either. Yes, it's not a nice thing to say – but he's an 11 old kid and she's a teenage girl. It's natural for them not to get along. The others' overacted - Yamato said that if Daisuke was his little brother, he would beat him up. What the hell? And Hikari said she hates people who say bad things about their brothers. I understand why she said it, but man… so Daisuke doesn't get along with his big sister. It doesn't make him a jerk. Give the kid a break.

  • One of the writers for the dubbed version of Digimon disliked the second-season character Daisuke (AKA Davis), and constantly worked in misplaced digs at him from the other characters that weren't in the original script.

...since it's mostly bull. Davis DID come in for a lot of stick, but Jeff Nimoy (to give the writer in question his name) didn't particularly hate the character; the idea that he did is fandom myth based off a mis-remembered interview.

As back-up I provide:

2.3: WHO IS JEFF NIMOY?

Jeff Nimoy is, for most Digimon fans, the name that is synonymous with the American version of the show, prior to season three. Nimoy is known best as the voice actor behind Tentomon. The first script he wrote was the script for episode 1.14, "Departure for a New Continent," along with his business partner, Bob Buchholz. Nimoy and Buchholz continued to write scripts for the first season, along with all the other writers. Around episode 30, show producer Terri-Lei O'Malley (replacing former producer Rita M. Majkut) graduated them to voice director status. The beginning of season two saw Nimoy and Buchholz appointed voice directors, story editors and head writers - virtually every script up to "Digimon World Tour" was written by them to some degree.

In the earlier years of the fandom, Nimoy was subject to massive criticism and personal insults by fans seeking a target to blame for the large amount of jokes injected into the English dub of the second season. There was, in truth, no particular reason that Nimoy was singled out for this treatment, beyond the fact that his name was easier to spell that "Buchholz" - many fans, however, misattributed comments made in an interview by Terri-Lei O'Malley to him, and believed that, in particular, he disliked the character of Davis, this being the reason for the large amount of humour directed against the character.

The true culprit in all of this was micro-management. The popularity of the first season made the producers take a specific interest in the production of the second, with a large number of edicts handed down to Nimoy and Buchholz, most prominently, to make the show "funnier." This is the reason that their names appear on virtually every episode - one writer would produce the script, the producers demanded more humour, and Nimoy and Buchholz would then have to re-write parts of the script to accomodate that demand. As much as fans were frustated by the end result of this whole affair, however, they were not alone - Nimoy eventually came to the conclusion that there was too much producer interference for him to do his job properly, and he and Buchholz departed the series following "Digimon World Tour." It is ironic, of course, that the final episodes of season 2, and the two following seasons, were dubbed with a distinctly lower proportion of humour - presumably, the result of producers realising what their "meddling" had wrought and dialling it back, but taken at face value by fans, it did nothing to diminish Nimoy and Buchholz's reputation.

In October of 2001, Nimoy, tired of the endless fan complaints - and, in particular, mock "death threats" issued against him by certain indiviuals - reached out to the fandom via Megchan and some other sites, attempting to set straight the misconceptions about him. During this period, he was interviewed by the Digipedia - you can read that correspondance HERE [http://digipedia.db-destiny.net/cast_crew/nimoy.htm]

Many were surprised, however, when Nimoy returned to Digimon four years later for the belated dub of "Revenge of Diaboromon." Having sold his share in their joint company, Spliced Bread, to Bob Buchholz and parted ways with him, Nimoy was now under exclusive contract by Studiopolis Inc. Working as the movie's writer and director, Nimoy's ability to do the project the way he wanted to without interference resulted in something that shocked many fans - the movie was considered to be one of, if not THE best dubbed Digimon products. Following the airing of the movie, Nimoy gave a retrospective interview [http://digipedia.db-destiny.net/cast_crew/nimoy2.htm]

Nimoy is currently writing and directing the English dub of Digimon Savers.

Ununnilium: Huh, neat! I'm afraid I was under all the impressions talked about in the article. Putting in a corrected version.

GMO: Isn't:

  • Meg Griffin on Family Guy was not seen as very interesting by many fans, and subsequent episodes have many references to her being forgotten and ignored almost casually.

...more like a case of an Unpopular Unpopular Character?

Lurkerbunny: I've actually seen that a lot of fans like her and can't understand why she's been treated so badly. Some even stopped watching the show. Then again, that's just the fans I hang out with.
