Clever Pun: Should we link the picture bac to the original comic? it's not standard, but it might be a good idea in this case, since there's more to it. I've forgotten the picture original website, though.

Big T: Removed the following because they aren't examples of this trope. If you can't figure out why, you need to go back to grammar school. Read the actual description.

  • Three words: Clark Kent's glasses. Although the comics, movies and various media in which he appears often offer various justifications and frequently hang lampshades off it such as this fanfic, the fact is that the whole secret identity hinges on the entire world not realizing that Clark Kent is near-identical to Superman, except with a pair of glasses on. This example has inspired the related trope Clark Kenting.
  • In the second half of Final Fantasy VI, while re-recruiting all your prior party members after losing them in the cataclysm, you come across a man named Gerad, who bears a striking resemblance to ex-Party member Edgar; except with differently colored clothing. It will be a while before he reveals his "true identity" to you and explains his reasons for wanting to stay undercover. Apart from the fact that his friends recognized him instantly, and his pseudonym was merely an anagram of his real name, of course.

Kalle: DAAAAAAH. This is what I get for not reading the page the whole way through! I'm kind of embarrassed. ._. Moving the Mother 3 example to Wig, Dress, Accent where it probably should go, boo.

Ccoa: Moved the Okami example to Wig, Dress, Accent. There seem to be many, many instances where this needs to be done. Perhaps these two should be merged?

Frank75: I had been thinking that too, but the separation is clear: Strangely Effective Disguise is so obvios fake that it just works in comedy. Or when everyone in the plot has the Idiot Ball. Wig, Dress, Accent and Paper-Thin Disguise are different in so far whether a hero or a villain is doing it. The pic with the disguised robot would have to go to Strangely Effective Disguise, though.

Eponymous Kid: Not enough of a distinction between Wig, Dress, Accent and Paper-Thin Disguise. those are lumpy.

Oh, and I think the difference between this and Strangely Effective Disguise is that a Paper-Thin Disguise isn't necessarily believed... but... most of the examples are fallen for, so... maybe they aren't different...

GG Crono: Nice picture. May I ask where it came from?

Tyrfing: I think it's a Team Fortress 2 joke... which it is (check the link under the picture.

Tyrfing: I changed the Family Guy example from "horrible Chinese accent" to "horrible Japanese accent" because his line is something like "Ah! Sausage-san! Plan to buy many for Samurai buddies."

ccoa: As per consensus in the forum thread, Strangely Effective Disguise has been merged into this trope.

Errick: Okay, wait am inute, why are discussions about merging or deleting pages not being discussed on the discussion pages? It actually took a fair bit of poking around for me to sort out what was going on here, since I came across it from Canonical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions which talks about how Strangely Effective Disguise is different, but I tried to go to it and it wasn't there. I had to manually poke around the urls to see what the old page was, and there was no discussion whatsoever on that page's discussion about merging it. Nor do I see any mention of the discussion in here prior to this announcement that it's been decided to merge it. If you don't poke around the forums (and we don't all do that) this seems as though it comes out of left field. Not that I have any particular vested interest in if the pages are merged or not, I was just trying to figure out where Brain from Inspector Gadget fits in the tropes, hehe.

ccoa: Discussion of merges are supposed to happen on the forums. Trying to discuss things on discussion pages is like waiting for glaciers to melt. If you're interested in renames, merges, and rewrites, then that's where you need to hang out. Sorry if you feel left out, but that is the official arena for this sort of discussion.

Addendum: For that matter, it was discussed for several weeks in YKTTW before moving to the forums when all rename and merge discussions were moved there. Sorry if you missed it, but I went through proper channels and gained consensus before acting.

Errick: Hm, I don't get it then, why is there a separate forum for discussions when we already have a mechanism for discussion on the pages themselves? I mean, I've never even touched the forums at all before now because I assumed they were.. y'know.. just forums, like chat and stuff tangentially related but I assumed all important wikistuff would be on the wiki proper. That's probably what I get for assuming in the first place, but still, maybe there needs to be more obvious notes or something in the "new to the wiki?" pages, since those are primarily what I read to get a feel for how things are laid out here. Then again that was a while back so for all I know it might explain it now. I guess I'm just at a loss.

ccoa: Traditionally, renames/merges/rewrites were all discussed on YKTTW. The reasoning is that most interested parties are not watching a page, and thus are less likely to notice a debate on a discussion page. YKTTW gave far greater exposure to most editing tropers. However, about a two weeks ago, all rename/merge/rewrites were moved to the forums, because it was felt they were distracting.

Honestly, I have no idea where a newbie would go to get acclimated with all these byzantine rules. I sorta picked them up through trial and error and a bit of osmosis over the last year. That might be a good thing to bring up on the forums, where the admin will see it.

I thought about adding this : http://boingboing.net/2007/10/20/japanese-women-could.html it's a skirt that turns into a disguise as a vending machine. Apparently Japanese muggers are clueless
