Madacaek: Does the whole "Mikos" thing not bother anyone else?

Tulling: I got to wondering: Are monks (either catholic or orthodox ones) ever depicted in anime in a manner analogous to any "local" kind of monk or priest?

Seth: I cant think of any examples, they have people in their own religions that fit in with what we use monks in fiction for so i dont suppose they would need them. I am so tempted to say "Exception: The nuns in Maria-Sama Ga Miteru are quite normal." Hehehe

Why is this more excusable than Crystal Dragon Jesus?

A Carlssin: If you think these examples are bad you should see the misconceptions American writers have about typically-American religeons.

  • I forgot which movie it was, but Roger Ebert once commented on a plot device where a serial killer confessed to his murders in a confessional, then proceeded to describe his plans for an upcoming murder. The priest was torn between his vows to keep confessions a secret and his desire to inform the police. Ebert pointed out that discussion of a future event is NOT a "confession" and therefore the priest would not be duty-bound to keep it a secret.
  • Roger Ebert has, over the years, pointed out a number of other movies which have gotten Christian concepts wrong.
  • Jeffrey Lyons, upset over the horrendous mistakes made in the movie "Priest", commented, "I'm Jewish and I was offended".

Sikon: The Mai-HiME example doesn't really work for me. Not only does it have little to do with this trope (Yukariko is indeed young and a HiME], but she's definitely not a miko), I don't find an idea of such a "low on personnel" church all that implausible. After all, it's a small church whose services are only of interest to a Japanese school in the middle of nowhere, and it's just a cover-up for Searrs anyway.

Valentine: It wouldn't even have occurred to me to consider the church "low on personnel". Possibly the way catholic churches are run vary around the world, but it seems pretty much standard here in Ireland for village churches to have only a priest.

Harry Henry Gebel: I'm not sure about the opening sentence of this article, most sources I've seen give almost the same number of Catholics and Protestants (around 509,000 of each, or a total of about 0.4% of the population in each group). Maybe it should say "many" instead of most.

The main article says that when nuns take their vows, it's for life... well this troper's former nun mother, former nun godmother and their husbands might disagree (one of whom a former monk). And we're Catholic by the way. Might want to revise that bit...
