Alhazred: Would Epic Games' recent butthurt over the second-hand videogame market fit here? Cliffy B's rant included nerd-rage about one million people buying Gears 2 on release day but "twice as many" playing it, as well as the rather copy-protection-sounding idea of their future titles charging second-hand buyers twenty bucks before letting them fight the final boss.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon had copy protection which caused the game to boot up and then go into Cabela's Big Game Hunter.

HeartBurn Kid: What, seriously? That may be the best copy protection EVER.

jjmcgaffey: This page is supposed to be followed by CripplingOverspecialisation, but the link jumps to CrystalDragonJesus - CripplingOverspecialisation has the correct links (back to CopyProtection, forward to CrystalDragonJesus. I can't see how to edit that - I can add it to a new index, but not put in links (that I can see).

Ununnilium: Fixed - it was because it was on the index like: Crippling Over-specialisation. Just changed it back to a direct Wiki Word.

bluefireglow: Would the NES and SNES's "lockout chip" fit as an example here? It wasn't really designed to prevent the player from copying the game, but it was supposed to prevent the playing of unlicensed games on the console. It's a related concept and might be worth a mention.

T-T-T:I removed some text as it was trolly and offensive to the spore community.

HeartBurn Kid: Don't see how it's trolly or offensive to call attention to EA's draconian copyright protection, and I have to admit that it's made me think twice (and I've been looking forward to the game since it's been announced). Here's the bit that was taken out:

  • The highly anticipated game Spore was also announced to use the same system. Whether or not it has been toned down like Mass Effect has not been announced, but needless to say these two games have been struck off many gamer's wish lists.

CodeMan38: Gah, I'd forgotten all about the computers which bundled The Journeyman Project but didn't include the manual. And this was in the days before GameFAQs, too. -_-;;
Kilyle: I admit I've only done this twice, so I may be getting annoyed with the Random Number Generator instead of something more actually out to get me, but... I just got a ROM (image?) of the Japanese, updated-graphics Dragon Warrior III, and upon playing it in my editor, I walked out of the initial castle-town and quickly encountered my first battle, the first enemy move of which was to blast me with a fireball that did about four times as much damage as I have hit points and killed my entire party. Okay, fine, maybe I walked into the wrong spot, stay clear of those trees, right, try again, step out of castle, BOOM. Same thing happened a second time, only in a place closer to the castle. So I decided to shut the game off and get some sleep, but after finding nothing on a search engine I decided to come here to ask if anyone knows this to be a bug or a copy-protection scheme for DQ 3.
HeartBurn Kid:
  • That wasn't exactly copy protection (not of the sort meant here). The only English-language version of Mother ever produced was just a prototype, and was never intended to be distributed. Hence, it has a failsafe that ends the game at a certain point.
Actually, this isn't quite true. Much like Mother 2/Earthbound, it has an elaborate series of checks to make sure it's playing off of an official Nintendo cartridge; it's not just a stop screen stuck into the prototype.

Also, Natter, axed, yadda yadda.

Pretty soon the games companys will be demanding retail stores take blood samples.

Pichu-kun: The Pokemon one..According to bulbapedia,this wasn't entered by a third party,meaning Nintendo put it in.
Weegee: Where the Hell does "If you like this game, go buy it or die" appear?
