DurianOfTemptation doesn't have the same ring to it. But yeah, your cleaned up version's much better. Though I do disagree with you on the DeathNote one... accidental symbolism is inherently meaningless. Now tackling the next worst section: Movies * "Do you know the first thing I'm going to do after the curse is lifted? Eat a whole bushel of apples." Pirates Of The Caribbean: More thinky than it looks. Apples are Barbossa's Trademark Favourite Food, and his inability to taste them as an undead pirate is the most important consequence to him for his theft of the cursed Aztec gold. ** He also keeps them on-hand at all times, to eat one as soon as he's free of the curse again, which allows Jack to mockingly eat one in front of him in order to goad him into making a deal. It's the temptation and the consequence all at once! ** When he finally returns from the dead at the end of Dead Man's Chest, naturally the first thing he does is to eat one. Way too natter-y, and missing the point. Apples represent his humanity, which he lost due to his greed and taking the Aztec gold. It works, but kind of for different reasons than the cited. * François Truffaut's 1966 film of Fahrenheit 451 featured a bowl of apples in the house which is confiscated and burned in the opening sequence. At the end of the film, the owner of that house is seen once again, munching an apple. Here it symbolises love of knowledge, and the implication seems to be that in this case the temptation is worth the consequences. The symbolism and implication here seem like they come from nowhere. * Used in Pleasantville, where the male lead is offered an apple by his girlfriend in a film all about a fictional town's loss of innocence. Great example. * In the 2009 Star Trek film Kirk produces and eats an apple with great satisfaction as he breezes through his (rigged) Kobayashi Maru in a nod to The Wrath of Khan. This doesn't seem to be an example, especially since it's a nod to another movie that isn't listed as an example at all. The trope at play here is TheSnackIsMoreInteresting, and the snack happens to be an apple. * King Leonidas in Three Hundred munches an apple while supervising his men, as they search through piles of dead enemy soldiers after a battle, killing survivors. ** Leonidas: *chewing and talking* I mean... There's no reason we can't be civil about this, is there? ** Artemis: *stabs survivor* None sire. This is just InappropriateHunger * In Fright Night, Jerry Dandridge is usually seen snacking on apples - unless he's snacking on someone's neck instead. Do I need to say it? * In Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, Girl Of The Week Willie Scott is disgusted by the dinner served at the temple and refuses to eat, despite being obviously hungry. Retiring for the night, the Belligerent Sexual Tension between Willie and Indy is heightened by Indy appearing with a big juicy apple that Willie devours with lust. Saying "devours with lust" doesn't make it more of an example. It's a starving woman being given food. * In Animal House, Donald Sutherland's shady, student-romancing English professor is shown lecturing on Paradise Lost from a Satan Is Good perspective, and then biting into an apple. Fine. * Truly bizarre B Movie The Apple has Mr. Boogalow's temptation of the female lead to stardom represented by an oversized prop apple. Good * In the commentary for Eves Bayou, the director and writer points out that even she thought her use of Eve and the apple and Eve and the snake were a little heavy handed. Obviously works. * In Tron Legacy, Clu sees his reflection in a silver apple, recalls his creation by Flynn (who he has come to passionately hate), and loses his temper. What does it represent here? Haven't seen the movie, but knowing the source makes me think it's a TakeThat to the Apple computer company.
