Apologies for double post, I think I've cracked this:

This trope requires:
* ShipTease
* People who have unspoken feelings for each other
* A scenario where the characters think Bob and Alice have feelings for each other, but they don't (or only one of them does)
* A scenario where everyone (the audience and the characters) think Anne likes Billy. Even Billy thinks this. But at the climax it's revealed that she doesn't
* A love triangle
* Evidence to support a character being attracted to two or more characters.
* Probably a ShipperOnDeck, who will more than likely try to ship the wrong couples (although the audience may not know that these are the wrong couples at the time)
* Probably at least one break up or temporary estrangement
* At the climax, ships are sunk, the official ships are revealed, evidence for conflicting ships is explained and people are reconciled. Generally one person is left single either because no-one is attracted to them or because they chose to nobly stand aside and let a more worthy friend date their love. There may be extras who are made single by sunk ships where the shippees had actually been dating. However, these characters will find happiness before the end of the story.
** After the climax, there may be a scene that gives our poor singleton a relationship or hope for the future. Just not in ''{{Frasier}}''.
