^ ReplacementGoldfish, I think, includes instances wherein the person is not an alternate form of the same individual but merely resembles them. Suppose the death of Alice's little brother Bob is [[MyGreatestFailure her greatest failure]]. In ReplacementGoldfish, maybe she meets Charlie, a young boy about the same age who shares many of Bob's interests, and becomes attached to him as a replacement for Bob. In this trope, maybe she finds a clone of Bob or an alternate universe counterpart and experiences an instant attachment because of her relationship to her Bob. I suppose it might be a more specific form. Also, I think ReplacementGoldfish is often a long-term trope; this may very well not be.

I suppose this trope relates to IdenticalStranger insofar as the appearance is concerned, but the idea is that the person "is" in some way the individual whose appearance they have and the hero has an emotional reaction because of it. I'm beginning to wonder if I should strike shapeshifters from the lineup.
