This probaly needs a lot of work, but it's a start:

So, you sit down to watch a show, and it's full of NightmareFuel [[Literature/{{Goosebumps}} like a town full of ghouls created by a toxic spill luring in new families to feed on them]], SnuffFilm [[WesternAnimation/CourageTheCowardlyDog makers brought back as zombies trying to claim new victims]], or maybe some ParanoiaFuel [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E26ACanterlotWeddingPart2 like a creature that takes the form of a loved one to feed on your love]]

Wow, that was terrifying, but wait.  Does that rating say TV-Y7? That can't be right, there's no way this is a kids show. Well, it is and you've stumbled upon this trope. Sometimes the fact they're supposed to be writing for kids doesn't stop a writer from pulling out the full arsenal of mature themes, and it's not limited to TV shows either. For further reading see GettingCrapPastTheRadar, and ParentalBonus, as a large amount of either can lead to this trope happening.

Some things to thinking about when adding examples:

*Mind the rating, nothing over PG is this trope(this can be shakier for movies before the PG-13 rating was implemented, so mind that too)

*Make sure the show was actually created for kids and it's not just a case of MisaimedMarketing(when a toy company thinks it's a kids show), or WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids(when a network or dub company thinks it's a kids show) This trope is only for if it was intending for kids from the start.

*Be wary of [[YoungAdultLiterature YA novels]], some of those are marketed at older High-School students.

*Just because a Manga or Anime is Shounen, doesn't mean it goes here. Those works range range form E(G) to T(PG-13) so be sure of the rating on them.
