I think this trope will definitely have to be YMMV like the similar tropes.

(Just an FYI I love the Harry Potter series. I just wanted to contribute some examples. I tried to be as objective as possible)

* The ''Franchise/HarryPotter'' Series of books was intended to be a childrens series, but it hosts a great many events and themes that are probably not appropriate for children. Keep in mind many of these examples [[ItMakesSenseInContext Make More Sense In Context]] with the story.
** ParentalAbandonment/ ParentalNeglect. Starting in Literature/HarryPotterAndThePhilosophersStone; Harry's parents have died long before the first book, and he's left with his [[EvilUncle Evil Aunt and Uncle]] who make him live in a cupboard, and denied him food on occasion, which Harry recollects might have nearly caused him to starve.
** In ''Literature/HarryPotterAndTheChamberOfSecrets'' there's Moaning Myrtle's death. [[spoiler: She was constantly bullied while she was alive and was killed by a Basilisk (giant snake) in a girl's toilet, which she haunts in grief of her death there. It's implied the owner of the snake made it kill her because her parents weren't wizards.]]
** Racism/Supremacism. Many of the evil characters througout the books (especially slytherins) believe that muggles (non-wizards) should be ruled over by magic users, or otherwise killed. These families believe any non-wizard or hybrids of magical beings that enter the family to be abominations and a shame to their family line.
** Lots of murder, and [[FateWorseThanDeath Fates Worse Than Death]]. Many characters sympathetic to the main characters are outright murdered by death eaters (evil wizards). 
***[[spoiler: Dementors make people suffer a FateWorseThanDeath by stealing people's souls and turning them into EmptyShells.]]
***[[spoiler: Draco Malfoy plans several premeditated murders in  Literature/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrince]].
