My Father's Son is a story of change. Which is funny because its built on an idea where a slight change in Altar Diplomacy would make the troubles of canon much different.
The thing that is clear through the story is that the author has a rather romantic view of what the canon histories of Rheagar and Lyanna have in relation to the troubles of the kingdoms around them. And with that comes some rather blunt favoritism towards the houses of dragons and wolves. In addition, there's a bit of dismissive thought towards some of the old players in the riverlands and vale, though not without at least some fond mentions of one person or another.
Furthermore, there's an open desire to bring the supernatural to light in this world. That rather than some of the more ambiguous stances present in the books, the presence of supernatural events makes it clear that there are gods, and they are moving in Planetos now.
And there's some alternate character feelings going on too. Taking Robert as a Gaston type, without as much of his ability to make friends. Making Doran more power hungry and dismissive without playing up his desire to protect Dorne from ravages. Catelyn isn't as sympathetic.
But while these can be taken as Your Mileage May Vary, there are some nice things that others can grab onto in exchange. With the changing dynamics in the kingdoms, the author is willing to try out different pairings such as Dacey Mormont/Arthur Dayne or Cersei/Ned. While unexpected, he does his best to make it feel natural how they come together, or even make the unnatural come together in organic ways so that people can try thanks to the Arranged Marriage.
There's some fine character appreciation too. Tywin is made to be a brutal but also clever politiker who nonetheless gives the Brutal Honesty that makes him a worthy Honest Advisor. Melisandre is reimagined as Lighter and Softer, but because of that, becomes someone worthy of trust and hope. There's strategic appreciation as well as tactical bravery found in even minor book characters with major backstory connections. And there's an appreciation for different parts of the franchise, as stuff from the books, tv show and video games are all part of one big universe.
So while it might not be for "purists" in the strictest sense, it is a more optimistic take on how the house of the dragon and the house of wolves were rebirthed together. And as the first in a series of fics, one where the history is worth following for what comes next.
