The main problem with "Twilight" is that it does way too much telling and not enough showing. In a romance story, it's not enough for two people to constantly say "I love him/her and our love will always prevail." The romance needs proper development and it needs to help characters develop as well...which in Twilight's case, it doesn't. "Twilight" could've been so much better had Meyer actually taken time to flesh the characters out instead of creating Mary Sues, but she didn't.
Also, it's hard for me to believe Meyer is a decent writer when she doesn't even do basic research like the "west coast of Brazil" or when she completely screws up Native American mythology.
I'm not arguing with you on that about the legends, because you're probably correct. But she did come up with various explanations about how her vampires could move or even live, which was what I was refering to. And you're right. I'm just saying that even though her work was short of a romance, it could have been worse.
The thing is with the whole "liking different guys" bit isn't so much that thats a terrible thing (I agree, liking different people in life is perfectly normal) the problem is is that Bella's a bitch. She has this obsessive fixation on Edward to the point where she's pretty much like "Fuck you Jacob", and yet when Edward leaves town, she goes for Jacob and pretty much leads him on to the point where he would logically think he has a chance with her. Here's the clincher however, the moment, I swear to you, the MOMENT Edward comes back, Bella instantly ditches Jacob and practically berates herself for ever considering that there are OTHER MEN IN THE WORLD, giving Jacob a subtle "fuck you" in the form of "well I actually never loved you despite leading you on that ENTIRE time!"
Thats the problem I find. Bella is a whiny self absorbed bitch who will, quite literally, obsess over people

It's okay, but not the best romance around.
I've read Twilight (All of them), at least twice, and my final verdict:
Not that bad.
It doesn't deserve all of it's popularity, but you can't say that she didn't Show Their Work (She wrote all sorts of things to figure out how to make this story work!), or even that she didn't make this for herself. Ms.Meyer is a decent writer, and if the indications from the Second Short Life of Bree Tanner is any indication, she might have been a very popular writer. I'm not fond of the plot, and rather honestly, I'd like to hear more about the Volturi than the Cullens, but she's fine. The actual story itself is a bit odd, but at the same time, I can't help but agree that perhaps a clumsy, not-really-social girl could fall in love like that. Edward is nearly one century old, and pretty much asexual on all terms until he finally meets Bella. He's got his chance at happiness, but he keeps screwing it up, and his Stalker With A Crush kinda creeps me out. Jacob has a crush on a girl he has known (and probably liked) since he was a kid.And to be fair, girls don't stick with one guy throughout high school. But since Bella likes two boys, she's automatically painted a slut. Yeah. Something is wrong when a girl in high school likes two boys. Maybe it's just me, but this is a regular high school story with superpowers and supernatural beings. Girl meets guy, guy stalks her, she falls for him cause she likes him, finds out a deep, dark secret, another guy comes along, she doesn't want him and he tries to kill her, gets foiled, end of Book one. Like so. If you want a real romance, don't look at me. I'm a teenage girl, so what would I know about realistic romance?
