An Unlikely Hit

When I first saw this anime in the preview charts, I thought it was aimed at a child audience. Checking out anime that appear to be "for kids", as it were, is always a gamble, but I basically picked it up on a whim. I was astonished to find that I was not only coming back for another episode week after week, but actually enjoying the interplay between a pun-slinging polar bear, a lazy panda, and a grumpy penguin. There were no laugh-out-load moments and the puns were mostly groan inducing (I have seriously never seen that much dajare in one show) but I don't think it was that kind of series. For me, it played out more like Iyashikei than comedy.

I'd give this a 9/10 to lovers of slice of life because of its tight writing and strong characterization, in the sense that I came to know each character reasonably well and felt like I was sharing in their adventures. I recommend it to people who enjoy shows with a more eclectic sense of humor. If you like laugh-out-loud gags, slapstick, or biting satire, then this probably isn't for you. Of course, people who don't like animes where nothing happens at all need not apply.
