NOT for everyone

This film is nonsensical, over the top, and utterly insane, and I was entertained by almost every minute of it.

Watching this, I got the impression that the executives at DC told the writers in Japan to go nuts with the characters and the concept. I realized very early that if I was going to enjoy this movie, I’d have to turn my brain off. The animation and artwork are of course fantastic, and they certainly took advantage of their setting to show some truly impressive, and original character designs. Also, the action is certainly something to see, and there was never a point where I was bored watching it. The voice-acting is also good, and there is certainly a lot of fun to be had seeing this classic characters in such a setting. No doubts here is entertainment to be gleamed from this, so long as you approach this with the right mindset.

That said, I can certainly understand why others couldn’t get into it. It get’s so ridiculous at some points, that it becomes almost comical. I found myself laughing out loud at some scenes at how utterly absurd it was getting, but I can get how some people would be frustrated rather than entertained. And despite initially setting up a conflict with Batman having to adapt to losing his tech, that concept is rather quickly don away with, and I can’t really think of any conflict that replaces it, other than “beat the bad guys”. It’s a shame, as that would’ve been an interesting matter. The other villains also serve little other real purpose other than to be glorified side characters, but to be fair, this movie is only 85 minutes long, and they could only do so much. As the YMMV noted, some of these ideas they present would be functional on their own, but put all together, it can get a bit too top heavy.

So, in conclusion, if you can embrace the craziness of this story and setting, you’ll find something to enjoy about this. BUT (and this is a big “but”), if you’re not a fan, I can totally get it. As for me, I don’t regret my rental.
