Rogue One - A Star Wars Story Review (Spoiler Free)

Rogue One!

THE GOOD-

DARTH VADER

- Most of the characters are likeable, my favourites being snarky robot K-2SO, and badass warriors Chirrut and Baze.

- The director, Gareth Edwards (the director of Godzilla (2014)) once again proves his mastery of scale, as everything in this movie **feels HUGE***!

- Krennic is a good villain

- The grim tone and pitch-perfect, unexpected ending

- Actually makes A New Hope better!

-

And the space battles!

THE BAD Creepy CGI Tarkin -

The first third is real wonky - Some of the line deliveries are a bit flat and awkward - Vader delivers a full-on pun. Unnecessary. - A couple of gratuitous cameos - Giacchino's score leaves a lot to be desired.

What was there to like about Jyn Erso? She was a jerkass for most of the movie, her character went from \"Who cares about The Aliiance?\" to \"Hey, we can sneak into an imperial HQ and of course we can destroy the Death Star\" in ten minutes, her facial acting was limited to either frowning or being stoic. And that inspiring speech from her to the rebels, I\'m still waiting to be inspired.

Cassian on the other hand had some character in him, being a rebel who was willing to get his hands dirty while being a hero. One can hardly fight against the Empire without doing some bad things yourself. I hated the part where Jyn chews him out on not trusting her enough to not tell her that he\'s going to kill her father or when he doesn\'t initially trust her. He\'s out to help the galaxy and one life is hardly worth as much as the ones that Death Star destroys.

Krennic could have been a lot better in my opinion, allowing Tarkin and Vader to keep showing how much higher they are in the food chain made him too inconsequential for my liking. Not to mention that he barely has any encounters with the heroes and when he does, he\'s just shot in the back and left there.

The middle of the movie is the best part in my opinion, the first part jumps from one place to the next too frequently, Saw wasn\'t really necessary for the movie to continue and the last battle just dragged on and on. There are maybe 20 rebels initially on the planet that\'s an imperial HQ and no-one can stop them? What the hell? Even the AT-C Ts can\'t stop them. And then the Death Troopers all die while stopping them? Come on, how bad are the imperial drill sergeants if they can\'t stop 20 rebels before they get reinforcements from another planet?

I left the theater disappointed, but it was better than Force Awakens, maybe 7/10 at best.
