I Shall Wear Midnight

It has often been said that Night Watch is Terry Pratchett's opus. And, for a while, this was definitely true.

But it is no more.

I Shall Wear Midnight is Sir Terry's greatest book. I say this with no intention of hyperbole. It features a return of old characters, the introduction of new ones...and it is all woven together, into a web of pure beauty.

This book is dark. Many would say that it shouldn't be a 'young adult' novel. They might be right. But it should be read by all who are capable- because it is sheer brilliance.

This book is Sir Terry's sign to the world-

"I ATE'NT DEAD."

YMMV, of course. Definitely brilliant, and had the cameos we have all wanted forever, but it is up to Sir Pterry's fair readers to decide.

Oh, indeed.

But this is a review, which is inherently subjective. I never intended to make objective statements.

Well said. I actually wrote the review here for Night Watch, lauding it as Pratchett's greatest work, but I have to say that I Shall Wear Midnight is definitely up there with Night Watch, maybe even surpassing it. It's funny; I tried explaining Discworld to my friends, and I told them how it's a massive, 40 book extended universe, and they all said that they're sure he's just milking it for all it's worth and that the later books must be declining in quality, but it's the exact opposite. The Color of Magic was my least favorite Discworld work, while the best in the series (in my opinion) were Thud!, Night Watch, and I Shall Wear Midnight, some of the most recent books.

Anyone else noticed how 2/3 of those are Watch books?
