7.8 seems like a pretty good rating seeing as how it's remembered and appreciated more for its expressionist aesthetics rather than its story.

This film did not age well.
Most glaringly, the Mandatory Twist Ending made the film feel like something by M. Night Shyamalan, and, to make matters worse, it has a serious Ending Fatigue and finally ends with a line that throws in a forced happy ending without elaborating enough to make it interesting—in short, They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot. You could tell it was an amazing film by the standards of the time, and it’s still fairly enjoyable, but it really doesn’t hold up as well as it did.
